cooper. in the meantime, to the other news this sunday night. hurricane matthew's trail of destruction, its effects felt all the way to new england tonight. the historic and deadly flooding, 100 miles inland. this road in fayetteville, north carolina washed away. matt gutman in north carolina tonight. >> reporter: matthew's final punch bashing the coast with a last dose of wind, rain, and fire. this house engulfed in hatteras. the rain swamping fayetteville, 14 inches there, a third of its average annual rain falling in hours. >> our state is facing major destruction and, sadly, loss of life. >> reporter: the storm has claimed at least 20 lives. and in north carolina, over 1,000 water rescues. the water carving a canyon into this road. this woman's car submerged. as rescuers approach, notice
