mourning. tonight flags are at half staff in vermont for the five teenagers killed in a wrong way crash over the weekend. good evening. i'm jean mackin. josh: i'm josh mcelveen. we're learning more about the young victims, one of them attended a private school here in new hampshire. jean: adam sexton has the latest. reporter: court documents in vermont indicate that the driver of the truck that struck and killed these teens is now under investigation for murder. one of the teens who died has been identified janey cozy, a sophomore at kimball union academy in new hampshire. she had apparently gone home to vermont for the holiday weekend. she and four friends were in the car headed southbound on 89. police say the driver of the truck stole a police cruiser of an officer who had arrived on scene and was trying to pull the teens from their burning vehicle. he causedded a series of crashes before being captured and is now

coach says she was one of a kind. >> such a great kid. there are 26 girls on our soccer team and two coaches and she's just beloved by everybody, smiling all the time, hard working, fun to be around, team oriented, just a wonderful kid. we are devastated. reporter: administrators say students are returning from the holiday weekend tonight and tomorrow. it's a small school of only a few hundred students and tomorrow to talk about what happened and to remember janey. adam sexton, wmur news 9. josh: we know the name of the driver that was killed while allegedly speeding a way from police, investigators say an officer in stoddard first tried to pull over 59-year-old kevin morong, who sped off on route 9, racing through his where and into then henniker before being thrown from his car in a crash involving three other vehicles.

reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour and camed to stop for police on two occasions. it started started in stoddard t night when a state trooper saw a blue toyota rav4 driving very fast. officials radioed ahead to his where police who saw the vehicle speeding on route 2029. authorities say there was a brief pursuit but it was quickly stopped because of the high speeds. shortly after that, police say there was a henniker where the driver of the toyota lost control and hit three other vehicles. police say morong was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. >> we have no idea why this operator was traveling at the rate of speed he was for so long, there was no pursuit going on initially as it was high speed. he didn't yield to my blue lights at all, kept driving at that high rate of speed for

reporter: authorities say drivers and passengers of the other vehicles involved were not seriously hurt. the investigation is continuing. andy hershberger, wmur news 9. jean: we're going to witch gears here. the long holiday weekend is coming to an end and there's a lot traffic out there as columbus day visitors head home. shelley walcott is at the hooksett rest area where people are getting a stop in on their way home. shelley: yes, lots stocking up here at the hooksett rest tolls for a long drive home, because traffic out here is a little bit slow today. of course tourism officials say hundreds of thousands of people coming home from up north where they took in the fall colors for the holiday weekend. the colors were at their peak in northern new hampshire this past weekend, and columbus day is the third busiest travel weekend in the state. and based on numbers from past years, an estimated 600,000 visitors were believedded to

weekend. of course many of them are heading home now, so this makes it slow going on the highway. we spoke to some travelers including a family from belmont actually headed down to fenway for the red sox game tonight. >> horrible. it taken about an hour. >> what does it usually take? >> 25 minutes. >> there was a little bit of traffic right at 89 where it meets up with 93, about a mile backup. but after that it was south this afternoon, pack your patience. for more on the traffic situation, i'm going to toss it over to peggy james who has the latest on traffic. peggy: yes, the backups start around canterbury on 93 southbound, gets really thick there all the way down to the bow junction. also on 89 from exit 3 out to the bow junction, where you meet up with 93, very heavy getting through there. it's slow moving

little running room down to manchester. 293 southbound is heavy through the mill yard and traffic is crowding up on the everett turnpike south through merrimack. volume picking up 93 south from manchester down to derry. 101 however is trouble-free, but on the seacoast 95 south is sluggish from york, maine to the hampton tolls. i'm peggy james for 95.7, wzid. jean: the holiday weekend sure ended with ?ig show off those fall colors, you can see them popping here in berlin, gorgeous in our north country and our mountains. the clear skies also came with a big drop in temperature. mike haddad has the frost advisories and freeze warnings in effect across the state. mike: yes, it's quite chilly despite the sunshine, temperatures running several degrees below average. tonight will be likely the coldest so far this season. take a look at the temperatures right now, we're starting off this early part of the evening

and along the canadian border, low to mid 40's in pittsburg. 50 in berlin. mid fitz south. later on tonight we have the freeze and frost conditions. frost advisory means temperatures will be right near 32 or slightly above, but surfaces, that means your car, grassy areas, could be just near the freezing mark. so frost likely around and lakes region, through the merrimack valley and within a few miles of the coast. western parts of the state, the monadnock region through the up temperatures below 32 for a killing freeze for the first time this season. what about the rest of the the week ahead, that's straight ahead. josh: all right, now to commitment 2016 coverage, some big names will be on the campaign trail here in new hampshire this week. on thursday, first lady michelle obama will be attending a rally in concord, while donald trump will be back here on saturday

portsmouth. trump's return to new hampshire comes on the heels of a graphic video that cost him support among granite state republicans. this was the first topic of discussion at the second presidential debate. a matchup that left a lot of voters shaking their heads. diane roberts is in our washington bureau with voters' reaction to last night's faceoff. diane? reporter: josh, with with less than a month to go until the election, both candidates are on the campaign trail, pushing hard, trying to win over those undecided voters. hillary clinton hitting the campaign trail in michigan after sunday night's debates. >> donald trump spent his time attacking when he should have been apologizing. reporter: a cnn poll says hillary clinton won the debate. but that trump did better than expected. >> winning a debate is not like winning a football game, there's not a clear winner and loser. winning is in the eye of the beholder. reporter: house speaker ryan was

nominee on the campaign trail, follow trump's recently released comments about women at it. at a rally in pennsylvania today trump attacked clinton saying she talked about petty things during the debate. >> during the 90 minutes she was exposed and her failures were exposed, she had no defense, all she could do was lie. reporter: as for trump's reaction to palm ryan's comments, he tweeted today that the house speaker diane roberts, wmur news 9. josh: the today show suspended billy bush over that same video that brought the backlash for trump. he was hosting access hollywood when the video was taken. nbc says there's no excuse for bush's behavior and that he's suspended while the matter gets further review. over the weekend g.o.p. leaders

the wake of that video that surfaced friday. but in an interview today, abc news senior political reporter cokie roberts said that trump did just enough during the debate last night to stop a complete party revolt against him. >> he did change the conversation that was going on among republicans about getting them off the ticket or trying to see how they could organize to oppose him. that seems to have stopped as a result of his credible performance in the republicans who have stuck by trump in this election will have a lot to answer to if trump winds up dragging down other g.o.p. candidates on the what the ballot. on news 9 at 6:00 we'll have what others are saying about having trump at the top of the ticket. jean: a lot of pressure on the red sox right now, not to mention the fans. if nay lose against the indians

josh: a terror suspect in germany is behind bars tonight thanks to a quickitying trio. three syrians living in germany say that the man approached them at a train station and asked for a place sta stay, they recognized him from a wanted poster. they agreed but then tied him up in their apartment until police arrived. police say al bakker was preparing a bomb attack and does have ties to at the new jersey station where a woman died in a deadly crash there. last month more than 100 people were hurt when the train crashed into the station in hoboken. many of the injury were among the passengers boarding trains today. first stopping at customer service to pick up items they had to leave behind on the day of the crash. investigators say that train was traveling more than twice the speed limit. traffic on the water is now

closed to boat traffic so crews can remove the old lift span and float it down the river. if you want to watch this massive operation in person, crews hope to remove the old lift span on friday. if the weather doesn't cooperate, they'll do it on saturday. the new bridge is expected to open next september. josh: hurricane matthew has fallen apart but has left a dangerous wake in the carolinas. some warning that the worst is yet to marci gonzalez is in st. augustine, florida. reporter: the big focus today is on cleanup for this and so many communities. though the storm is now gone, others are still dealing with the lingering dangers. the post storm skies now clear, but hurricane matthew is still dishing a devastating blow to north carolina. >> we have not hit the most serious point of this flood in north carolina as of yet. reporter: a desperate effort at

the floodwaters. >> back up. reporter: 1400 regulation cued so far. >> the rescue team, i am grateful. reporter: after the heavy rain left rivers overflowing their banks, adding to overwhelming damage and more deaths. in the u.s. matthew has claimed more than 20 lives. several other people are still the death toll estimates now top 900. meanwhile, back in florida, the mcmullen family is cleaning up. the severity of the storm's impact elsewhere bringing them perspective. >> we feel really lucky and blessed. >> and a lesson in loss. >> stuff can be replaced, right. we can't be replaced. reporter: the kids have been out

damage. there are more than a million people from here to the carolinas still without electricity. marci gonzalez, abc news. mike: hard to imagine such a devastating deadly storm, actually had some beneficial effect as cross new hampshire yesterday as it did pull away from the east coast with a cold front and resultedded in a bit of today. take a look at plymouth where skies are bright and the find is getting closer to peak in places like plymouth. it has peaked in the great north woods and parts of the white mound mountains. tonight a frost yirs very after midnight, in and around southern portions of carroll county through the heart of the lakes

freeze warning? in the area that you see the freeze warning you'll definitely get frost. this just indicates a good possibility of getting those temperatures actually to freezing or below. you can actually have the frost occur with temperatures that are red read four, five, six feet above the ground. temperatures right near freezing result in frost, or on grassy areas. little below to the west. no advisory up north because you've already seen a killing freeze earlier in the month. you'll notice temperatures right now are on the cool side and also accompanied by gusty wind. when you're in the shade it feels quite chilly with the winds active out of the north northwest. some gusts higher than 30 at times today. but those winds will abate and with clear skies, very dry air

freezing in concord. this would mark the coldest temperature since late april. you work a few miles inland and you're down near 32 or 33, that means a good possibility of frost in the morning. freezing temperatures, my 20's, great north woods, upper 20's in the upper valley. and right around 30 in a good part of the monadnock region. but after a cold start early tomorrow morning you'll notice a warmup back to our west, mid 60's not out of the question not only t then a cold front pays us a visit thursday evening before temperatures dip again by friday and the start of next weekend. but no storms to speak of across new england. we've got high and dry weather for tonight. one shower chance will come along about thursday evening. mainly in northern and western parts of the state. so again for tonight, the winds gradually subside, skies are clear. and temperatures tumble. for tomorrow a nice recovery by

josh: turning back to commitment 2016 coverage, knowing that new hampshire already has low unemployment, we asked the candidates for governor what they see as the biggest challenge to the economy here. >> our economy in new hampshire is stagnant, there's no dou about it. one of the biggest challenges we face is retaining a younger work force in the state. we're losing that 25 to 35-year-old demographic in droves and they're going right over the border to massachusetts where charlie baker, a great republican governor, is breaking down regulation, breaking down permitting and really driving business into his state. and the reason is, exactly the reason i'm running for governor what i'm trying to bring to the table. you need leadership in the corner office that understands business, that can talk business to business, understand the

that they look at. whether it be energy costs or health care costs, talk to them at their level to make sure they understand what the vans are to coming into new hampshire. we need to incentivize our young work force to not just go to school here but to stay and work in some of our high risk jobs like teachers or clinicians or nursing. >> to grow jobs and strengthen our economy in new hampshire it's incredibly important that we strengthen our work force and protect our high quality of i saw this as a business leader at stoney field yogurt and southern new hampshire university, which i think is now our fastest growing large employer in the state. and i fought for projects like solar and renewable energy and getting passenger rail up to our state to help businesses grow quicker. when we talk about strengthening our quality of life, part of that is combating the drug crisis, which folks might not think of as an economic issue, but the fact is that it threatens our quality of life and that means it threatens all of us.

week ahead. josh: and two new england professors will share a nobel prize for research that affects anyone who ever had a job. >> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now wmur news 9 at 5:30. josh: tonight a rochester man is being held without bail charged with selling a lethal dose of fentanyl. i'm josh mcelveen. jean: i'm jean mackin. the victim died of an overdose cases are very difficult to investigate. josh: jennifer crompton is live at our seacoast bureau. reporter: across the state these cases are all too common for investigators. but being able to charge someone with an overdose death is not. and despite those odds, rochester sends three detectives to investigate every single overdose. a tip led rochester police to stake out a house on charles street on sunday.

sheridan avenue capping a three-month investigation. 27-year-old ryan kirk, a transient, charged with supplying the fentanyl that killed a young man found in an apartment complex in june. >> he was a male in his 20's, he was from a neighboring community in maine, and to our knowledge from this investigation he had come here specifically with the purpose to purchase the drugs that he ended up eventually taking. reporter: police can't say whetherir other overdoses. >> i can't speak to how many other people ingested what this gentleman was selling. you can relate to it a game of russian roulette. reporter: they send two detectives and a supervisor to investigate every overdose death. >> they're difficult cases because a lot of times you have to have a witness to the actual act of ingesting the drug. and unfortunately a lot of the

don't necessarily want to be cooperative with the police. reporter: as a result, finding someone accountable is not very common. >> it's not often we get to make a phone call to the family to tell them we've may an arrest. and there is some sense of closure for them and for us. reporter: kirk is due in court tomorrow at 1:00. rochester police have been working closely with the attorney generals drug task force and they anticipate that they will be prosecutinghe case. jennifer crompton, wmur news 9. jean: thanks. a 17-year-old from madison died in a car accident in tamworth this weekend, state police say juliette m. bertrand-huntley went off the road while rounding a curve on route 16 saturday morning, near chicorua lake. they are still looking for information to help them figure out why she lost control.

were behind bars in massachusetts, they broke into the home oh of an orange, massachusetts couple last wednesday, allegedly kill 95-year-old thomas hardy and injuring his wife, 77-year-old joanna fisher. they had been on the run since the home invasion and were spotted over the weekend outside a virginia wal-mart. >> the family is happy to see the arrest made, we knew it was forthcoming. it's a shame the thing went down like he d. he would have given him the but it wasn't like that. josh: the two had just been released from jail for allegedly stealing her grandmother's car. the suspects could be extradited to massachusetts by the end of the week. jean: it's a windy one today and the wind brought live power lines down onto a car in hooksett. the gust knocked over a tree which toppled into several utility poles. power lines dropped onto a car

but the road was closed until crews could replace the utility poles and clean up the mess. columbus day has a different name in vermont this year, where the holiday is officially known as indigenous peoples day. the governor signedded the declaration for 2016, for future years the next governor would have to issue another proclamation. although many towns have renamed columbus day, vermont is only the second state to recognize indigenous peoples day. josh: back to commitment 2016 we asked candidates for senate how that chamber would be improve in helping the economy. >> we've come together across party lines to lay the foundation for inclusive economic growth, that's included passing two balanced budgets without a sales or income tax. we froze tuition for the first time at our university system in 25 years and lower it at our

fun and also invested in critical economic priorities while also cutting small business taxes. i want to take that same approach to washington. i've laid out an economic plan that provides for ways we can foster in addition support job creating businesses and make sure that hard working families have the chance to truly get ahead. it outlines steps we can take to expand the r and d tax credit, make sure burden of student debt and lower the cost of higher education. support clean energy jobs. invest in our roads, our bridges and our highways. and it provides for a $1,000 tax break for middle class families. >> i'm the wife of a small business owner. i know how important it is that we make sure that we have a better tax code, because we have some of the highest business taxes in the world. and we need a code that keeps jobs here in the united states of america.

jean: a holiday -- no holiday on wall street samsung says it's a justing the production schedule after more reports of phones smoking or igniting. josh: complaints about the phones of catching fire first came out in september. now some of the the replacement phones issued by the company fire. verizon, at&t, sprint and t mobile say they are no longer selling replacement note 7's. you can still swap out potentially combustible phones for a different device. there's a recall tonight for drum stick a cream cones after a factory that makes the treats showed signs of listeria. that test was done in a california facility, no one has gotten sick, but nestle is pull the treats just in case. the voluntary recall is for the

state trooper saw a blue toyota rav4 speeding eastward. >> the trooper tried to catch up to the vehicle to stop it, but the vehicle was traveling so fast that it got out of his sight quickly. so he radioed ahead, the hillsboro police department subsequently saw the vehicle too. reporter: a hillsboro officer pursued the vehicle for a short time trying to get the driver to pull over, but eventually broke off the chase becauf speed. authorities say it wasn't long before calls began coming in about a crash. >> apparently the operator of the s.u.v. had lost control of the vehicle and struck three other vehicles in the process. reporter: police say the driver of the s.u.v. was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. the drivers and passengers in the other vehicles were not seriously hurt. police say their investigation will continue. >> we have no idea at this point
