state trooper saw a blue toyota rav4 speeding eastward. >> the trooper tried to catch up to the vehicle to stop it, but the vehicle was traveling so fast that it got out of his sight quickly. so he radioed ahead, the hillsboro police department subsequently saw the vehicle too. reporter: a hillsboro officer pursued the vehicle for a short time trying to get the driver to pull over, but eventually broke off the chase becauf speed. authorities say it wasn't long before calls began coming in about a crash. >> apparently the operator of the s.u.v. had lost control of the vehicle and struck three other vehicles in the process. reporter: police say the driver of the s.u.v. was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. the drivers and passengers in the other vehicles were not seriously hurt. police say their investigation will continue. >> we have no idea at this point

at the rate of speed that he was for so long. there was no pursuit going on initially as to his high speed, he didn't yesterday to my blue lights at all. reporter: the other individuals who were struck by the s.u.v. are very lucky they weren't more seriously hurt. i'm andy hershberger, wmur news 9. josh: thanks. new details about a private school student here in new hampshire who was one of five teenagers killed in a crash in vermont. investigators are now considering murder charges against a man behind the wheel of the truck they say caused the crash. adam sexton is live with the story. reporter: one of the teens killed in this horrific crash attended kimball union academy in meredith. 15-year-old janey cozy was a sophomore at the private boarding school, administrators say she had gone home for the long holiday weekend. investigators say she was out%

friends and they were all in a car headed southbound on 89 that was struck by a wrong way driver. jamie -- janey's soccer coach says her loss is already being felt on campus. >> it's tragic for the community, it's tragic for the family. it's mostly tragic for jamie and we hope we can honor her memory going forward. reporter: the driver of the truck that hit the teen's car is in critical condition but he could be facing five murder charges if hevi he stole a police cruiser and caused another series of collisions, leaving several other people injured. his bail has been set at $1 million. jennifer: turning to the weather now, it is columbus day and it sure does feel like mid autumn outside. here's a live look tonight in plymouth. skies are clear, those leaves are changing. mike haddad is here with how cold it's expected to get

weekend, and as you can see the highways are jam packed. tourism officials say hundreds of thousands of people were up north this past weekend to take in the fall colors. they were at their pack in northern new hampshire this weekend. columbus day is the third busiest travel weekend in the state. and based on numbers from past years an estimated 600,000 visitors were expected in our state. and many of them are heading home right now and this has made things slow going out here. we spoke to some trale slow in both directions. >> we were up by crystal lake, my daughter's birthday. traffic coming back has been smooth so far. >> we're heading to the game. >> how was the drive down from belmont? >> horrible. it's taken about an hour. reporter: what does it usually take? >> 25 minutes. reporter: it's pretty jam packed out here. so if you are headed

patience because things are kind of slow. i'm shelley walcott, wmur news 9. jennifer: tonight there's a new director of the new hampshire state police. this afternoon captain christopher wagner was sworn in as colonel by governor hassan. wagner has been working for the state police for nearly 20 years starting as a trooper in 1995. he most recently served as a commander of the support services bureau of state police. wagner is from litchfield and graduated from u. with a criminal justice degree. josh: the political fallout continues tonight over that 2005 video in which donald trump was heard talking about groping women. today republican speaker of the house paul ryan told fellow house members he'll no longer campaign for trump. but amy coveno is live now with how some running for top offices in the granite state are sticking with trump. reporter: josh, senator ayotte is the only republican running for major office in new

officers started checking vehicles, they say when they approached his vehicle he said, quote, i give up, and was arrested. jennifer: tonight a rochester man is held without bail charged with supplying a lethal dose of fentanyl. rhine kirk was arrested sunday, capping a three-mob investigation. a 24-year-old from maine was found dead in an apartment in late june. police believe he came here specifically to buy the fentanyl that killed him. detectives say being able happen very often. >> well, they're difficult cases because a lot of times you're going to have to have a witness to the actual act of ingesting the drug. unfortunately a lot of the witnesses are tide up in the world after dix and they don't necessarily want to be cooperative with the police. jennifer: kirk will be arraigned tomorrow. josh: a chilly night at fenway and other places. mike: yes, only chilly for

the mother of the groom got lost in the woods. jennifer: state police say dwhreaft mom had wandered off the property they were all staying at near route 302 and got lost. after an hour and a half she was located, and then reunited with her family, so then the wedding went on as planned. mike: the sun has just gone down on a very chilly columbus day in new side, but they'll shut down and that means freezing temperatures for some and a frost for others. what's the difference? you can get frost with the actual temperature just above freezing where the readings are kept at about five or six feet above be the ground. so we could see temperatures near 32. but in many cases right around 33 or 34. but right at the surfaces just cold enough for a little frost. freeze warning in effect in western parts of the state where we will likely see the temperatures dropping below 33

parts of the monadnock region and the upper valley. as for northern new hampshire you'll be well below freezing, down near 20 athrong canadian border but no advisory because you've already seen the first kill freeze or the only killing freeze of the season. as for temperatures right now, 40's north, 50's south, but in the lower range of the fifth and with the northwesterly win it feels cooler. we've seen gusts 30 to 35 today, but the wind will shut down and with clear skies tumble. on average mid 20's north. but on the canadian border lower 20's, right around freezing for many. then downtown manchester and alon the coast, mid 30's by early tomorrow morning. but we've got high pressure building in, that means sunny skies for the day tomorrow, more sun wednesday. a good part of the next several days will be rain-free. you know the story about the drought, we've got beneficial rain in spots yesterday, but none out there for tomorrow.
