good afternoon. i'm josh mcelvin. while the officer's names haven't been released we are learning more about the alleged shooter and what preceded the gunfire. ray brewer is live in the studio with those details. ray: the two officers that were wounded are now out of surgery, and according to officials while the officers remain in critical condition the surgery is said to have gone well. it began just before eleven last night. the two officers responding to a domestic call in east boston, on gladstone street. reports of two roommates having a fight. once inside police say they found this man 33-year-old kirk figueroa. police say figueroa was armed with an assault rifle and wearing body armor. and began to open fire injuring the officers. other officers responded and according to the police commissioner they dragged the officers out of the line of fire. figueroa was subsequently killed in a shootout.

at bishop guertin high school in nashua and wmur's andy hershberger was there. andy: most of the argument today focused on testimony about a marijuana grinder that was found in the back of remo gross-santos' car. defense lawyers are appealing his conviction claiming that evidence about the grinder wasn't relevant and was prejudicial he was convicted last year of running over two elderly women on the seacoast while traveling to a high school graduation rehearsal after an all night party. prosecutors were never able to prove gross-santos was impaired, but prosecutors say evidence about the grinder was relevant because it questions the defendant's credibility and statements to police. >> he left out smoking marijuana in the car. it gives you to believe that maybe he's not being entirely

setting off bombs in new jersey and new york will be arraigned from his hospital bed today. ahmad rahami is charged with 5 counts of attempted murder of a police officer and weapons offenses. more than 30 people were injured in the september bombings. police have released the 9-11 calls from last month's deadly shooting at a south carolina elementary school. a teacher can be heard desperately telling dispatchers what she saw and heard while 6-year-old jacob hall died days later due to a gunshot wound. 2 other people were injured on the playground. right now the state wants to try the 14-year-old alleged shooter as an adult. right now the u.s. is launching several missile strikes on yemen after a u.s. warship was targeted yesterday. officials say the attack was the second in just 4 days. no word on if there were any injuries or deaths in the attack. we are tracking hurricane nicole which is lashing a bermuda as a

getting your kids egaged in autumn? lara gengarelly, unh cooperative extension is here to talk about that. during the fall weather what are some ways to engage kids in doing science? >> fall is an ideal time to bring your children outside. you can go on nature walks. you can explore your backyard or neighborhood. science is world around us and observation is key to that. josh: what are some specific activities parents can use to excite kids about learning science through the outdoors? >> i would suggest starting in nature journal with your child. to coach your child. kids are encouraged to be

place things in the nature journal that they can have overtime. josh: i remember being in school and shading the crayon over a leaf. it was a long time ago. >> what's wonderful about nature journaling is it's very accessible to all families. all you need is paper, a notebook, a writing implement. it's a book called keeping in nature journal. i would highly recommend it. there are some nice tips about how to maintain a nature journal. she suggests certain writing prompts like what's happening outside today or what's happening in this particular location? josh: is there anything at the cooperative extension that feeds into that?
