diane. the iraqi prime minister came out just before 2:00 a.m. local time to announce this operation was being launched. we're on the front lines with curd herb pesh merg -- kurdish pesh merga forces. they're some of the 30,000 iraqi forces making up the force surrounds mosul in order to take it back. this is the second biggest city in iraq. this is something of a last stand for isis. their biggest prize claimed in 2014. once if, and when, they lose it, that means they'll no longer have any sort of foothold in iraq. this is a huge operation. it could take weeks. could take months. those 30,000 forces are being backed up by the international coalition. including american forces. right now, i'm looking at a detachment of american forces backing up those iraqi forces, helping them choose and target isis positions down in the valley. for the last 12 hours, more or

these kurdish forces firing artillery, rockets, and mortars on to the isis operation below. they hope to make their advance toward the city of mosul. >> are you able to gauge the progress from where you are in terms of how this operation is going? and how important is it not only strategically but symbolically? >> reporter: it's hard to say how it's going. it comes to battle. for a couple of hours, there was a lot of gunfire, rocket fire, a lot of mortars being fired. now it's calmed down a little bit. i'm looking from an elevated position in the hills. it's a flat plain. another reason it's hard to tell how it's going is there's a lot of smoke.

the t artillery. you have isis burning oil and tires to create massive plumes of black smoke. it's hard to say how the battle is going. keep in mind you have those 30,000 forces backed up by the american troops. inside mosul, an estimated 6,000 isis forces. the question now is, whether they will see this as an all-out battle to defend the city or if they'll eventually cut and run and give up on iraq and go back into syria, where they still occupy a large swath of territory. >> the u.s. defense secretary ash carter calls this a moment in the history of iraq. we'll see how it all plays out. alex marquardt. we'll have a live report later on on "gma." thank you. that decisive moment comes as isis deals with another setback after being pushed out of a small town in syria. isis had boasted that dabiq would be the staging area for a doomsday battle against nonbelievers. but it was retaken yesterday. isis forces put up minimal resistance before leaving that opportunity. to the west coast and back here at home. more severe weather for the northwest.

he's been charged with four counts of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence. three men have been charged connection with the fatal shooting of an olympic athlete's daughter. 15-year-old trinity gay was hit in the neck during an exchange of gunfire between cars in a lexington, kentucky, restaurant parking lot. she was the daughter of olympic sprinter tyson gay who appeared in the olympics in 2008. she herself was a promising sprinter. and that police dash cam video from alaska showing a suspect accused of shooting an sidewalk then crossing to the officer's side of his car. another video shows the alleged gunman walking away from the vehicle. police say he stole it and then abandoned it a few blocks away, after shooting the officer who was seriously injured. the suspect is at large. the officer remains hospitalized. your morning glass offing on just just got more expensive. this year's orange harvest is expected to be down 14% from last year. due to tree disease and
