it has been so cold this week. that's going to turn into snow for parts of the state tonight. kevin: for most it is rain. for the north country a mixture of rain and snow. hi switching to rainfall in central and southern areas. it could be over six inches of accumulation. for a look at the morning drive here in the granite state we're joined live by 95.7 wzid's deb davidson. good morning deb. >> good morning. we are not seeing any problems on 93 either north or south.

the turnpike is moving nicely. all major roads are of to speed. with triple team traffic reports throughout the day, i'm deb davidson for 95.7 wzid. erin: while things are clear on the roads right now conditions will likely be very different tonight especially in the northern and western parts of the state where snow is expected at the department of transportation in concord this morning. where crews say they are ready for whatever weather arrives ray: while some snow did fall over the weekend up north this could be the first wintry driving conditions for a lot of people this year and officials are reminding everyone to slow down allow extra time and leave more space between you and other cars

salt to treat the 4600 miles of roads it is responsible for this is a tricky time of year as construction and basic road maintenance is still underway and wintry weather in october creates its own sets of challenges. >> the big challenge this time of the year is to make sure drivers are aware of changing conditions, if it's cold enough to snow it 's cold enough to for the ground to freeze and for slippery so people need to think that winter driving conditions are almost upon us. ray: officials say they are working every year to reduce the amount of salt that they use on the roads while also rolling out new and improved technology to make sure roads are getting treated when conditions warrant and remember just because the calendar says winter only lasts for 3 months we can see wintry conditions for almost six here

in concord ray brewer wmur news 9. sean: the weather is also creating new concerns for hikers with snow and cold in the higher peaks a hiker had to be rescued yesterday afternoon after running into blowing snow and cold temperatures on mount lafayette and losing the trail fish and game officers say conditions are already wintry on many trails in the white mountains and hikers need to prepare accordingly. new this morning the red cross fire heavily damaged a home in epping when firefighters arrived on blake road around 7-45 they found fire on the outside of the home spreading into the kitchen and the second floor officials say there is a lot of damage but the home can be repaired. erin: a man accused of shooting another man to death in manchester is due in court this morning to face a charge of second degree murder

connecticut. he returned to new hampshire yesterday after waiving extraition police say he shot 25-year-old jonathan vazquez ojeda near the intersection of merrimack and beech streets back in september after the two had an argument. police say they found a marijuana growing operation in auburn while trying to find a burglary suspect investigators were first called to a home on wood hill drive yesterday afternoon after reports that a homeowner fired a gun during a confrontation with an intruder police searched the area but never found the suspect however when they searched the home they seized several guns and marijuana that was growing in charges are possible against the people living in the home. sean: the elections are less than two weeks away and the outcome of the presidential race could be largely decided by the results in a few key battleground states like new hampshire and those results depend on which candidate can get more people to the polls abc's elizabeth hur takes a closer look at the final push.

for a strong victory, but despite trailing in most national polls, donald trump is rallying for a rebound, and abc's political director says, for good reason. >> the calculation for donald trump is that there is a hidden vote they don't talk to pollsters or they haven't voted in the past, that's the difference maker. elizabeth: for both clinton and trump, the real test in these final days, is getting out the votes in the battleground states. >> states that could go either way and thar of them. elizabeth: like pennsylvania, ohio, north carolina, iowa, nevada and florida, where abc news met voter after voter, still weighing their options. >> so even though you see a national polling lead, that's gotten wider for hillary clinton, you still have an opportunity because of the way the electoral map is situated. elizabeth: 270 electoral votes are needed to win the presidency, and based on the

interstate 93 through concord and into the massachusetts stretch. everything is moving well. looking pretty decent on 101. not seeing any delays. 111 and the spalding are up to speed. with triple team traffic reports throughout the day. i'm deb davidson. for 95.7 wzid. brace for snow the department of transportation is gearing up to keep the roadways safe. erin: here's a live look at colebrook this morning. the snow is expected to move in this evening and northern parts of the state could see several inches pile up. ray brewer joins us live in concord now to tell us how dot officials are getting ready. ray: dot officials say they are well prepared for the incoming snow. they've been stockpiling salt throughout the summer, so

>> we spend much of the summer and fall months preparing by building new trucks, training employees, reviewing our winter storm snow and ice policy and the latest snow removal techniques and methods. ray: october can be a tricky month for dot snow removal crews. just last weekend, nine crews were out treating icy roads in northern new hampshire. >> the big challenge this time of the year is to make sure drivers are aware of changing conditions, if it's cold enough to snow it 's cold enough to for the ground to freeze and for slippery type conditions, we all know that bridges freeze first, so people need to think that winter driving conditions are almost upon us. >> it's just one of those things, it's part of living in new england and we are ready to go. ray: dot crews are up against the calendar as they try to finish up summer construction projects. >> everything from paving to paint striping, basic summer maintenance operations, so that

we can't do overnight work when the temperatures drop down below a certain temperature. so that challenge is always there and the same people that do summer maintenance do winter maintenance so they will have to adjust accordingly. ray: every winter the dot tries to reduce the amount of salt it uses on the roads. >> it's a challenge because you want to keep the roads safe but we have an improved calibration with our trucks, we have a gps to monor given time, so technology improves every year and we try to adopt much of that. ray: dot officials say while the winter calendar is only 3 months long crews typically deal with wintery conditions for about six months out of the year. live in concord, ray brewer, wmur news 9. erin: calling hours are being held today for a teenager who died last week after apparently falling into a storm drain in nashua.

memory of 16-year-old jacob goulet. his body was found in the merrimack river in tyngsboro, massachusetts. investigators fear he was swept away in a storm drain but their final ruling has not yet been released. jacob was a student at nashua high north and was a member of the school's band. >> one of the big things with jake is he always knew how to make people smile even if he didn't know how to. >> you want to remember the times you had so we actually feel like he's here. erin: a memorial for jacob will be held tomorrow at three at in lieu of flowers his family's asks that donations be made to the high school band. sean: an autopsy is scheduled today on the body of a person who was killed in a fire in rochester. the fire broke out early yesterday morning at a home on whispering wind lane. authorities are not yet releasing the victim's identity but neighbors tell us a woman lived in the home alone. fire officials say this was the

happen in rochester in thirteen years. erin: a man involved in a deadly attack in nashua last year has pleaded guilty to his role in the crime. stephan peno was sentenced to a minimum of 28 years in prison after pleading guilty to second degree murder in the death of benjamin marcum. peno admitted to beating marcum during a robbery while another man, jonathan goff, allegedly stabbed him more than twenty times. goff is scheduled to go on trial next year. sean: a plymouth man is facing charges this morning after crashing into a utility pole in lebanon. the accident wasgh police say 48-year-old jeffrey caron was behind the wheel of this car when it went off route four yesterday and crashed into the pole. caron was arrested at the hospital on charges including driving under the influence. his passenger 31-year-old kellen fitzgibbon-bizel, of thornton was also arrested for allegedly possessing a variety of pills, that he did not have prescriptions for. erin: new on daybreak. some people in dover are rallying behind several volunteer and assistant coaches

school football team. the superintendent says they were drinking while traveling back to the school after an away game. while they were not in the same vehicle as the students and head coach they were still on duty. now a petition is circulating in hopes of getting those coaches back on the field. so far it's been signed by more than 600 people. >> in their minds, they were on their own personal time. they had left the field, had got into their own private vehicle and headed home. >> this is why the towns now are having harder and harder to get volunteers and get people who want to coach our young men and ladies, because they don't want to put up with this stuff that is just foolishness. erin: some supporters are planning to stand behind the coaches at the next school board meeting which takes place on monday, november seventh. sean: days after dcyf was named in a lawsuit, alleging the state

case division officials went back before the review commission yesterday. the shortage of social workers is keeping the division of children, youth and families from moving to 24/7 staffing. the agency says it's having trouble hiring people to work until 8:00 p.m., let alone all night long. first responders say those evening hours are critical to improving the protection of children. but the director of dcyf did report some progress. >> 33 since july 31'st of this year. that's unprecedented number of new staff i believe that t too has given our staff hope that relief is on the way. sean: dcyf says a higher pay level would make it easier to attract and retain staff. erin: the children's museum of new hampshire is dealing with damage, caused by last week's flooding. the museum in dover says two feet of water got into its basement and damaged thousands of photos and other memorabilia,

workers are now trying to salvage what they can. the museum also lost all of its halloween decorations, craft supplies and small kitchen appliances. sean: the new hampshire lottery and new hampshire home builders association is teaming up to launch a new initiative today. the tiny house workforce initiative will give students from 4 high schools the opportunity to develop skills to prepare them for the workforce while building tiny houses. more details about the program will be unveiled today during an announcement at alvirne high school in hudson. erin: coming up on daybreak, a scary situation for an uber driver in boston. >> they got out thru the back because the car was way into the wall. erin: an investigation is underway after an suv crashed through a home on beacon hill. sean: and just in time for halloween a new list is revealing which scary movie granite staters are most afraid of.

reimbursements from california national guard members. the members, who served in iraq and afghanistan, were asked to repay enlistment bonuses that may have been improperly awarded 10 years ago. in a statement, defense secretary ash carter said some soldiers knew, or should have known, they were ineligible for benefits they were claiming, but many others did not. he says the pentagon hopes to resolve all cases no later than july first of next year. sean: police in boston are trying to figure out what caused an suv to crash througho on beacon hill. an uber driver was behind the wheel when the suv slammed into this home last night, leaving a gaping hole. both he and his passenger were able to get out on their own after landing in a pile of bricks. witnesses say they saw the suv speeding down the street before it slammed into the building. >> as i look around the corner i see this car come flying up the street. it was going so fast, at least 70 miles an hour and ran straight into the wall. >> i'm just surprised that they survived. sean: witnesses say they believe the suv hit another vehicle before crashing into the building. the driver's wife says he only
