no problems around the lebanon area. 93 southbound looks good from plymouth down to salem. in massachusetts right now, 93 is solid from methuen to bloomington. you can expect delays from 495 down to treble cove road. from the wv -- wzid cap eight network, i am deb davidson. deb davidson. erin: while things are clear on the roads right now, conditions will likely be very different tonight, especially in the northern and western parts of the state, where snow is expected. sean: wmur's ray brewer is live at the department of transportation in concord this morning, where crews say they are ready for whatever weather arrives. not even halloween yet, ray. ray: you may recall we got some snow for halloween before. we did get some snow over the weekend, but this could be the first winter driving conditions for a lot of people here in new

-- allow yourself a little extra time and plenty of space between cars. the dot says they are ready to go. the trucks are all set. they have been stockpiling 172,000 pounds of salt to treat the 4600 miles of roads it is responsible for. they say this is a tricky time of year, as construction and basic road maintenance is still underway. and wintry weather in october creates its own sets of challenges. >> the big challenge this time drivers are aware of changing conditions. if it's cold enough to snow, it is cold enough to for the ground to freeze, and for slippery type conditions. we all know that bridges freeze first, so people need to think that winter driving conditions are almost upon us. ray: officials say they are working every year to reduce the amount of salt that they use on the roads, while also rolling out new and improved technology to make sure roads are getting treated when conditions warrant.

three years, here in new hampshire, the dot -- d.o.t. says we could have winter driving conditions for almost six months of the year. reporting live in concord, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: the weather is also creating new concerns for hikers, with snow and cold in the higher peaks. a hiker had to be rescued yesterday afternoon after running into blowing snow and cold temperatures on mount lafayette and losing the trail. fish and game officers say conditions are already wintry on many trails in the white mountains, and hiker prepare accordingly. new this morning, the red cross is helping seven people, including four children, after fire heavily damaged a home in epping. when firefighters arrived on blake road around 7:45, they found fire burning stairs and a porch on the outside of the home, with flames spreading into the kitchen and second floor. officials say there is a lot of damage, but the home can be

erin: a man accused of shooting another man to death in manchester is due in court this morning to face a charge of second degree murder. 32-year-old billy maldonado was arrested earlier this month in connecticut. he returned to new hampshire yesterday after waiving extraition. police say he shot 25-year-old jonathan vazquez ojeda near the intersection of merrimack and beech streets back in september after the two had an argument. police say they found a marijuana growing operation in auburn while trying to find a burglary suspect. investigs to a home on wood hill drive yesterday afternoon after reports that a homeowner fired a gun during a confrontration with an intruder. police searched the area, but never found the suspect. however, when they searched the home they seized several guns and marijuana that was growing in the basement. investigators say charges are possible against the people living in the home. sean: the elections are less than two weeks away, and the outcome of the presidential race could be largely decided by the results in a few key

and those results depend on which candidate can get more people to the polls. abc's elizabeth hur takes a closer look at the final push. elizabeth: with momentum on her side, hillary clinton is hoping for a strong victory, but despite trailing in most national polls, donald trump is rallying for a rebound -- and abc's political director says for good reason. rick: the calculation for donald trump is that there is a hidden vote. they don't talk to pollsters or that's the difference-maker. elizabeth: for both clinton and trump, the real test in these final days is getting out the votes in the battleground states. rick: battleground states are simply states that could go either way -- and there aren't that many of them -- elizabeth: like pennsylvania, ohio, north carolina, iowa, nevada, and florida, where abc news met voter after voter, still weighing their options >> i don't know. quite it may be trunk.

debate post. erin: frightened passengers broke windows to escape an orange line train in boston yesterday after a fire broke out on the rails. the train was getting ready to leave back bay station when a motor overheated and sparked a trash fire, filling the train and platform with smoke. the doors to the train wouldn't open, so passengers took matters into their own hands and broke out. quickly motor men made a cautious, and in my opinionpr doors. folks would have jumped onto a live their drill. >> this happened so quickly and effectively. i am going home. i am safe. erin: a total of five people were treated for injuries but none are considered serious. now t officials are trying to figure out why the motor overheated. a lot of people just did not know what was going on. really scary. sean: they wanted to get off the train fast. still to come on news 9 "daybreak" -- could contact lenses be the next big medical breakthrough? how doctors in boston want to use lenses in the future.

kevin: outside, temperatures everywhere from the upper 20's to lower 30's. classic continuing to thicken and rainfall developing and west to east through the afternoon. in some western or northern areas, this may start as a little bit of snow. i will have the details and what to expect into the weekend, coming up. sean: treating eye diseases could soon be as easy as putting in a contact lens, thanks to doctors at boston children's hospital.

medications directly into the eye for at least a month helping treat things like glaucoma possibly even dry eye. doctors say it is a game changer because patients don't have to remember to take their medications. they have been working on the design for the last several years. and they hope to begin clinical trials with actual patients within the next year. sean: it appears this was a success news hunt in new hampshire this year. fish and game officials say a total of 52 hunters bagged a moose during the nine-day the 72% success rate is up from last year. there is great news for the bald eagle population in northern new england. according to the new hampshire audubon society, 51 eaglets were born in the granite state this year, the highest number ever recorded. another 34 survived in vermont, also a record. in all more than 300 bald eagles were spotted in new hampshire this summer.

sean: officials in central italy are hoping to get a better sensh aftershocks. at least one town is reporting significant damage, with many in collapsed buildings, and thousands of people have been displaced. in scientists say these are actually aftershocks from the powerful quake back in august that killed nearly 300 people, but the good news is that no serious injuries have been reported with the latest shaking. a theme park in australia has now canceled plans to reopen this weekend after four people were killed on a water ride on tuesday, when a raft flipped

rainfall will be pushing in from the west. as this starts, or for an hour at the beginning, or even as it gets going, we may see a bit of snowflake activity mixed with rainfall. highs will be up in the 40's. we will be navigating back into the upper 30's by late afternoon. it will be a trend of sunshine to clouds. that means the rainfall develops from west to east heavy rain for most, and that is the headline. we have been talking for six months about needed rainfall. this could be over an inch. a race on before the ground freezes for anyone who has a well to get water in there. we are looking for a mixture of rain and snow, or possibly all snow later tonight, depending on your elevation. a lot would be tonight or tomorrow morning in the north country. the wind will pick up behind the system. that will be the air mass in place with fair skies into the

overcast. snow back to our west. that is going to bump into temperatures in the 40's this afternoon. that will be mostly rain. but it is cool enough that in elevation, it may start as snow before going over to rain. temperatures right now in the 20's to lower 30's early this morning. breeze out of the east and northeast is not going to allow temperatures to jump quickly. we go through the day with temperatures up in the low and mid 40's. 3:00 this afternoon. the cool air will slowly retreat into canada. slowly -- somewhat milder temperatures for the weekend. the precipitation moves in west to east, late morning and afternoon. then, mainly rainfall in the southern half of the state tonight. you notice in the north country what develops late today could be a mixture with snow. a lot of this is going to be elevation-dependent.

d.o.t. says if the snow does come, they are ready for it. they've been stockpiling salt and sand throughout the summer, and they are ready to treat the roads. >> we spent much of the summer and fall months preparing by building new trucks, training employees, reviewing our winter snow and ice policy and our latest snow removal techniques and methods. ray: october can be a tricky month for d.o.t. snow removal crews. worked out treating icy roads in northern new hampshire. >> the big challenge this time of the year is to make sure drivers are aware of changing conditions. if it's cold enough to snow, it's cold enough to for the ground to freeze, and for slippery-type conditions. we all know that bridges freeze first, so people need to think that winter driving conditions are almost upon us. it is just one of those things where it is part of living in new england, and we are ready to go. ray: d.o.t. crews are up against the calendar as they try to finish up summer construction projects.

operations. that makes it difficlt. for example, we cannot do overnight work on the temperatures drop down below certain temperatures. that challenge is always there. and the same people who do summer maintenance do winter maintenance, so they will have to adjust accordingly. ray: every winter, the d.o.t. tries to reduce the amount of salt it uses on the roads. >> it's a challenge, because you want to keep the roads safe. but we have an improved calibration with our trucks. we have a gps to monitor where they are at any given time. year, and we try to adopt much of that. ray: while officially winter only lasts three months of the year, the d.o.t. says we can encounter winter driving conditions about half the year. reporting live in concord, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: right now, crews are on the scene of a house fire in alton. the fire broke out early this morning at a home on loon cove road. officials say no one was hurt.

but we will keep you updated throughout the morning. erin: calling hours are being held today for a teenager who died last week after apparently falling into a storm drain in nashua. a vigil was held last night in memory of 16-year-old jacob goulet. his body was found in the merrimack river in tyngsboro, massachusetts. investigators fear he was swept away in a storm drain but their final ruling has not yet been released. jacob was a student at nashua high north and was a member of the school's band. jake is, he always knew how to make someone smile even if he , didn't know how to. >> you want to remember the times you had, so we actually feel like he's here. erin: a memorial for jacob will be held tomorrow at three at nashua high school north. in lieu of flowers, his family's asks that donations be made to the high school band. sean: an autopsy is scheduled today on the body of a person who was killed in a fire in rochester.

whispering wind lane. authorities are not yet releasing the victim's identity but neighbors tell us a woman lived in the home alone. fire officials say this was the first deadly residential fire to happen in rochester in years. 13erin: a man involved in a deadly attack in nashua last year has pleaded guilty to his role in the crime. stephan peno was sentenced to a minimum of 28 years in prison after pleading guilty to second degree murder in the death of during a robbery while another man, jonathan goff, allegedly stabbed him more than 20 times. goff is scheduled to go on trial next year. sean: a plymouth man is facing charges this morning after crashing into a utility pole in lebanon. the accident was caught on camera. police say 48-year-old jeffrey caron was behind the wheel of this car when it went off route four yesterday and crashed into the pole. caron was arrested at the hospital on charges including

his passenger, 31-year-old kellen fitzgibbon-bizel, of thornton, was also arrested for allegedly possessing a variety of pills, that he did not have prescriptions for. erin: new on "daybreak" -- some people in dover are rallying behind several volunteer and assistant coaches who were dismissed from the high school football team. the superintendent says they were drinking while traveling back to the school after an away game. while they were not in the same vehicle as the students and head coach, they were still on duty. now a petition is circulating back on the field. so far, it's been signed by more than 600 people. >> in their minds, they were on their own personal time. they had left the field and gotten into their own private vehicle and headed home. this is why the towns now are having harder and harder to get volunteers and get people who want to coach our young men and ladies, because they don't want to put up with this stuff that is just foolishness.

coaches at the next school board meeting, which takes place on monday, november 7. sean: the children's museum of new hampshire is dealing with damage caused by last week's flooding. the museum in dover says two feet of water got into its basement and damaged thousands of photos and other memorabilia documenting its 33-year history. workers are now trying to salvage what they can. the museum also lost all of its halloween decorations, craft supplies, and small kitchen appliances. erin: situation for an over driver in boston. >> they got out through the back, because the car was way into the wall. erin: an investigation is underway after an suv crashed through a home on beacon hill. sean: and just in time for halloween, a new list is revealing which scary movie granite staters are most afraid of. kevin: the next system will mean beneficial rainfall for some and snow for others.

secretary ash carter said some soldiers knew, or should have known, they were ineligible for benefits they were claiming, but many others did not. he says the pentagon hopes to resolve all cases no later than july 1 of next year. sean: police in boston are trying to figure out what caused an suv to crash through a home on beacon hill. an uber driver was behind the wheel when the suv slammed into this home last night, leaving a gaping hole. both he and his passenger were able to get out on their own after landin witnesses say they saw the suv speeding down the street before it slammed into the building. >> as i look around the corner i see this car come flying up the street. it was going so fast, at least 70 mph, and ran straight into the wall. i'm just surprised that they survived. sean: they did. witnesses say they believe the suv hit another vehicle before crashing into the building. the driver's wife says he only suffered minor injuries, and is now home from the hospital.

the celtics hosted the brooklyn nets for their season opener in boston last night. the c's own the nets' first round draft pick next june, so celts fans will be rooting for nets losses all season. jae crowder scored the first points of the game, staring boston off with a 2-0 lead. later on, al horford knocked down a three-pointer. and the celtics pulled away in the second half to get the win. 122-117. boston plays at the chicago sean: on the ice, the bruins skated at madison square garden against the new york rangers last night. it only took the bruins 10 seconds to get on the board. david pastrnak scored from brad marchand and zdeno chara. later in the first, austin czarnik had his first goal of the year. he was just called up from the providence bruins yesterday. the rangers scored three times in the second period to take the lead. then added two more goals in the third to win the game 5-2. next up, the bruins will play at detroit on saturday night.

into retirement with some more hardware. the red sox legend received the hank aaron award as the top hitter in the american league this season. big papi hit 38 home runs, 127 rbi's, and 48 doubles in the 20th and final season of his major league career. chicago cubs star kris bryant was honored as the top hitter in the national league. speaking of the cubs. they faced off against the cleveland indians in game two of the world series last night. chicago was the first to score , taking their first world series lead since october first, 1945. the cubs won game two 5-1. the series is now tied at one game apiece as the teams gear up to play in chicago tomorrow night. sean: during last night's game, cleveland indians shortstop francisco lindor stole second in the bottom of the first, meaning free tacos at taco bell. the fast food chain is celebrating the world series with its steal a base, steal a taco promotion.

that have two feet of snow is the biggest horror movie of my life. just trying to figure out where it is going to happen. we start with chilly conditions. rainfall developing this afternoon. temperatures today in the 40's. in the lower 40's, you may start as a bit of wet snow before going to rain. big headline is the fact we are going to see much-needed rainfall across a good portion of the state out of this. could be well over an inch tonight and tomorrow morning before letting be a rain/snow mixture up north, depending on your elevation, going to all snow before wrapping up tomorrow morning. wind behind the system tomorrow afternoon, and mostly fair skies for the weekend, but we run the risk of a shower saturday or later sunday. any early sunshine will give way to clouds. what we are saying play out to the west of albany, new york is mostly in the form of snow. as this eventually bumps into temperatures in the 40's, a lot

temperatures are in the 20's to lower 30's this morning, running five or 10 degrees cooler than we were yesterday at this time. through the afternoon, a light breeze out of the east and northeast, keeping the cooler air knocked in through the afternoon. that will be with a thickening clouds and rain showers developing from west to east into the afternoon. as you get up in elevation and western and northern areas, anything that does develop could initially have snowflakes mixed in. to develop. those become heavy by midnight tonight. your talking white mountains, great north woods, a good portion of that as snow. there will be pockets of heavier rainfall -- beneficial rainfall out of the system. notice the back edge by the morning commute in southern areas. that navigates northward. all the while, back-and-forth between snow and rain in the north country.

think, you have to invite me to your school. sean: fair enough. kevin: it is an exclusive. erin: people in the u.k. are trying out a new way to relieve some stress. it's called hammock yoga. participants hang from the swinging hammocks as they get into their poses. instructors say this actually makes some of the postures easier. >> well, certainly i think everybody is looking for some kind of stress relief nowadays and i mean yoga ticks that box but when you get into a hammock feeling of freedom. you can swing around a little bit and you can feel quite free but also you can hold your yoga postures with ease because you've got support. . erin: i guess. hammock yoga has been such a success that there's now a waiting list of people who want to give it a try. i am sure it will be moving across the pond soon. sean: that is not how i sit in a hammock. i fall asleep.

sean: as the state braces for snow, the department of transportation is gearing up to keep the roads safe. ray: d.o.t. says they are ready to go. they have been stockpiling salt and sand for months. they have over 172,000 pounds of salt to treat the roads. this is a tricky time of year, as construction and basic road maintenance is still underway. officials say they are also working every erin: calling hours are being held in nashua today for a 16-year-old who passed away last week after he apparently fell into a storm drain. a memorial for jacob goulet will be held at nashua high school north, where he was a student. sean: a man accused of shooting another man to death in manchester last month is due in court this morning. mauldin votto is scheduled to be arraigned on a charge of
