stormy 24 hours ahead with beneficial rain for some, and wet snow to our north and west. jennifer: some areas of the state could see several inches of it overnight. for the very latest let's check in with chief meteorologist mike haddad. mike: we are tracking temperatures now because that's critical in determining whether we get a chilly rain or wet snow. right now we're all above freezing, however in jaffrey and keene the temperature has dropped one degree in the last hour. as precipitation begins to and you notice the deeper blue shade there on our temperature map, indicating it's a little colder even to our west and that means western parts of the state stand a good chance of getting in on some wet snow. you can see it falling around areas of keene, back to peterborough, north to washington and southern sullivan county. not all of that is in the form of wet snow right now, but a good indication that those areas will see a little bit as we go through the evening. farther to the north more snow in the higher summits of the

rain all moves on through. you can see that mix and snow in western parts of the state, early to mid evening before that changeover to heavy rain. so how much rain, how much snow, and what about the potential for strong win on friday. all of that in a timeline straight ahead. jennifer: tonight's forecasted snow for parts of the north country has ski areas eager to see a whiter winter in year compared to last. cherise leclerc live from loon mountain now in lincoln to tell us how they're it's still just raining at this hour, but the rain is coming down a little heavier. but there is actually some snow at the top of loon mountain from a few days ago. but ski officials here say they're excited about the potential for more tonight, they say this is a great start to the season that's ahead. while the trails here are still bare, of course, ski resort officials tell us it only takes a couple of days of consecutive cool temperatures in the 20's to start up their snow guns. they say it's not all that

snowfall here in october, but it is always welcome news, after last year's milder winter they're hoping early snowfalls like this are a sign of good things to come for their ski season. >> people are very excited, especially after last year wasn't a stellar winter. they're just really primed to come up here and have fun. reporter: those ski officials tell us they think they will be ready and open to skiing before thanksgiving thisea leclerc. tom: we have troubling news tonight for people the kingston who are using town provided well water due to the drought conditions. that water being offered at the fire department is apparently contaminated with pfoa's. shelley walcott just spoke to state officials about the situation. shelley: the department of environmental services had tested the well water at the kingston fire department as a precaution and today they announced a surprising result.

kingston, new hampshire fire department showed elevated concentrations of pfoa's. the town of kingston requested the department of environmental services test the well water because the town was making water from that well available to residents who needed water because of the current drought. two separate rounds of testing showed that the well contained 140 parts per trillion of pfoa as well as the presence of additional pfc's. >> the pfoa and the department are the, this wasn't an investigation that was initiated because of a sort of known contamination. d.e.s. working with the town of kingston went out and tested the well at the fire department because the town had offered it to residents that were being impacted by the drought. shelley: in the interim the department of environmental services says people in kingston can get drinking water from the town library and that water has been tested and there is no sign

i'm shelley walcott, wmur news 9. jennifer: a developing story tonight, a man on trial for sexual assault was killed in a crash in gilford this afternoon. police say an officer actually witnessed the driver go off the end of the by-pass on route 3, through a gate, and then into an embankment. the officer was trying to stop the driver for reckless operation, in a construction zone when the car crashed. we've learned the victim was steven price, who, according to five counts of sexual assault and he did not return to the courtroom for closing arguments this afternoon. tom: tonight the president of a residential treatment center in plymouth has been put on leave. jennifer: that follows jeffrey caron's arrest on a drunk driving charge, his car crashed into a pole. as kristen carosa tells us, another employee of the center was also arrested after the crash. reporter: the crash happened in lebanon on wednesday morning,

residential treatment center in plymouth. and now both have been placed on leave. work to repair utility pole in lebanon continued thursday, after a car crash. >> a single vehicle drove into a telephone pole on dartmouth college highway, two occupants of the vehicle both sustained injuries that were not life threatening. reporter: the crash can be seen on this cell phone video captured by a witness. >> showing that it was traveling over the double yellow line, nearly had a few minutes prior to the actual accident. and then the video showed the vehicle trailing off to the side of the road and eventually striking and taking down a telephone pole. reporter: police say jeffrey caron was driving while intoxicated, he was arrested at the hospital. he's been charged with misdemeanor reckless driving and driving under the influence.

was also arrested. he's been charged with possession of a controlled drug. >> any time this happens it's concerning, whether it's 9:30 at night or 9:15 in the morning. reporter: the two work for mount prospect cad any in plymouth, an all boys residential treatment center, and have been put on a leave of absence. according to staff members, caron is the organize's president and fitzgibbon-bizel is the director of facilities. the organization is reviewing the incident but wouldn't comment further. commuter traffic, school traffic on a school day, a lot of things that could have happened and we're fortunate it wasn't a lot reporter: both men will be back in court in january. tom: up next in our commitment coverage. jennifer: independent congressional candidate sean o'connor joins us in the studio to answer your questions from gun laws to the national debt.

thinking about. josh: the first question for newcomer sean o'connor asks who are you politically? >> i'm an independent. so trying to box me in as a liberal or conservative, i'm neither of those. hive worked for a republican member of congress, i've worked for a democratic lieutenant governor. what i'm trying to do is bring the best ideas from both parties together to drive compromises to address the real issues that are affecting granite josh: what about gun laws? >> so i have a lot of friends who are sportsmen and hunters and i think it's very clear that the second amendment does provide a private right to bear arms. the only thing that i want to make sure of is that we do not allow guns to get into the hands of domestic terrorists, violent criminals and those who have committed domestic violence. josh: what are you going to do about the v.a. wait time for benefits for injured military? >> i believe that our brave men and women have served this

one inch of rain plus on the way between now and early afternoon tomorrow. now, that's one side of this storm. the other is the wintery side, very tricky part of the forecast is from right now until the midnight hour, in places like washington, southern parts of sullivan county, back through alstead, jaffrey, peterborough and all the way into the lake sunapee zone. we could see a coating to as much as one or two isolated highest elevations, so roads could turn slick to. the north precipitation just beginning to increase in intensity, that means a light rain-snow mix will go over to wet snow. the highest amounts clearly as you go up in elevation late this evening through midday tomorrow. a lot of energy rotating through toronto and blowf andful that transfers off shore, we're going to see the rain and snow intensifying through the morning commute tomorrow before it gradually tapers off during the

it is turning colder in the higher terrain in western new hampshire and eventually it will turn colder in the higher terrain of northern new hampshire as that storm intensifies overhead. but by late this evening and overnight it will begin to warm up from the southwest and that changes everything in southern new hampshire over to rain. so look at the timeline, seven, eight, nine this evening, heavy wet snow in the highest elevations. rain to the east of peterborough and all the way to the lak farther to the north. later on tonight it's all rain, some of it quite heavy, even a scattered thunderstorm during the overnight, early part of tomorrow morning, especially through the morning commute hours. a lot of rain left over with with snow in the mountains through midday and then it tapers off to scattered showers during the afternoon. rainfall amounts again good news in terms of the drought, anywhere from one to one and a half inches in many spots, but that will fall in the form of wet snow and parts of western new hampshire.

a coating to two, but much higher snow totals in northern new hampshire. three to seven in parts of the great north woods. 6 to 10 in the higher summits of the white mountains and again the winds tomorrow a big factor for your windy friday, as the winds could crank over 30 to 40 miles per hour. by saturday, clouds and sun and isolated shower, could be a shower in southern new hampshire sunday, but a good part of the day dry, more sun to the north, halloween is looking good, tuesday and wednesday a warming trend takes wednesday. tom: very good. >> in girls division two field
