from the institute of politics this morning with some of the highlights. ray: both republican chris sununu and democrat colin van ostern are currently serving as executive councilors, but experience was a big theme of last night's debate. both men hammering each other's resumes each claiming that they , are better prepared to lead the state. both have experience in concord and in the private sector. the debate also touched on a wide range of issues, including the northern pass, the drug the cost of higher education. and the man have opposing views on expanding commuter rail service. mr. sununu: right now, we have real needs in the state. colin wants to pander to the train fanatics. i want to make sure the people of the state are driving on safe roads. mr. van ostern: the train fanatics are people like the manchester chamber of commerce , the nashua chamber of commerce, business leaders who want to see their investments grow. those are important investments

we will continue to update you on the story throughout the morning. sean: right now, police say charges are possible after a deadly crash in salem. investigators say a car turning onto route 111 from ermer road around 4:30 yesterday afternoon hit another car, pushing it into oncoming traffic. a 69-year-old woman who was riding in one of the cars died. one driver was flown to a boston hospital. another is being treated for serious injuries in manchester. officers say the man who caused the crash was treated at the scene. >> it is a high-speed road, around 111. that is a dangerous intersection. unfortunately, throughout the years, we have had serious motor vehicle accident. >> i'm honestly surprised that there's not a stop light there. there's a stop light at every single intersection except this one. sean: the victim's name has not been released, and police say they are working with the county attorney's office to determine what, if any, charges should be filed. erin: there will soon be new resources available for pregnant women fighting substance abuse.

catholic medical center launches next year. it will provide treatment and recovery services for mothers, right through delivery,and then care for the child for a year. there are also recovery incentives for mothers, helping them earn points to get things like car seats or pack-and-plays. sean: a portsmouth high school teacher has been removed from the classroom after she dressed up as donald trump. this is a photo from her facebook page before it was taken down. a student recorded video o with inappropriate lyrics. the school superintendent says offensive language and political opinions do not have a place in the classroom. >> i think it is too bad it happened. it was very poor judgment on the part of the teacher, and i am hoping we do not see anything like this happen again. >> i don't think it's that big a deal. ok, it happened. the kids have all heard the words in school. it was halloween.

students in new hampshire are showing improved performance in the classroom. according to the department of eduction, the latest statewide assessment results show that students improved in english, reading and writing, and math. and for the first time, the state is providing accountability data for schools and districts taking part in a state-level pilot program aimed at improving academic achievement. some good news there for teachers and students. erin: it certainly is. it is now 11 organizers are scrambling after flames destroyed toys meant for hundreds of military children this christmas. sean: also, there is now no need

would be great. you are from catholic medical center. dr. robert, tell me a couple of things on how the runners can truly be prepared for the race? robert: it is a great question. the important thing to do, number one, is to warm up before the race. stretching cannot be over emphasized. warming up your muscles prevents injury, helps to perform better. every important to do. a light jog ahead of time to stay warm is going to be key for a race like this. kevin: breezy. the warm is going to be key. as you go through the race, a lot of loading along the way -- the liquids, the fluids, regardless of the temperature. important? robert: you are going to be sweating. not as much as the summertime, but you are losing fluids. pay attention to the water stations. slow down and grab a cup of water and drink. also remember, you have to have

this is the forecast for the manchester city marathon this weekend. it kicks off at 8:50 in the morning, and temperatures will be on the cool side, as kevin mentioned. maybe close to 40 degrees, with clouds. some sunshine by 10:00 a.m.. temperatures only climb to the mid-40's by noontime. chilly temperatures in the mid-40's. the runners like the cool air, although that might be a little chilly for the spectators. but they will take that. it is not the 90 degree heat we had during happening now. temperatures in the 40's. concord, 45. in manchester, 45. 37 in plymouth. even in the north country, a far cry from the 20's and teens we were in 24 hours ago. we are now in the low 40's. wind in most locations, basically nil. a few spots where winds are coming out of the southwest,

the debate did get a little heated at times. both nano stern and soon a new -- both van ostern and sununu kept coming back to experience, dissecting each other's resumes. mr. van ostern: his only job in the past decade is working for the sununu family, when his family bought him a ski mountain for him to run. we have seen that he hasn't been able to keep an eye on the bottom line or look out for people. mr. sununu: we're the only resort on the entire east coast expanding. millions of doll o anybody for health care costs. colin will say anything to avoid the fact that while he was running campaigns, i was cleaning up hazardous waste sites. ray: the candidates for governor tackled top state issues, from the drug crisis to education costs, tax relief, and whether they think northern pass transmission lines should be buried. mr. sununu: there are some tweaks to this design but when you say you want to bury the whole line, that adds $500 million to the cost. that would come directly to the people of new hampshire. it's essentially cancelling the project. mr. van ostern: the discernment he says he shows when it comes to solar and renewable energy projects just doesn't exist when

josh: gentlemen, i wish i didn't have a clock. ray: our granite state debates continue tonight with the u.s. senate candidates. kelly ayotte and maggie hassan will face off here at saint anselm college at 7:00. reporting live in manchester, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: thanks. opening statements are scheduled to get underway today in the retrial of convicted murderer gary sampson. he was sentenced to death back in 2003 after pleading guilty to killing two massachusetts men during a weeklong crime spree in 2001. after it was learned a juror lied about her background. this new trial will only decide if he gets the death penalty or life in prison. he was also convicted separately of killing 58-year-old robert whitney of meredith. erin: keene police are investigating a deadly accident involving a motorcycle. they say 29-year-old danny blood the second was riding near the intersection of west and island streets yesterday morning when he collided with an suv. blood was rushed to hospital, where he later died.

sean: two people are recovering this morning after suffering serious injuries in an accident in new london. firefighters say a car and tractor trailer crashed around 3:30 yesterday afternoon on route 11. one person was flown to the hospital. at this time, there is no word on the victims' conditions. erin: new on "daybreak" -- a massachusetts man has pleaded guilty to selling drugs in new hampshire. according to court documents, 25-year-old jorge medina admitted that he participated in distributing cocaine and oxycodone pi salem man, were also charged in the case. medina is scheduled to be sentenced in march. sean: state health officials are warning drug users, health care providers, and treatment centers about a potentially deadly strep infection. they say four men, all heroin users, were found with strep a in central and southern parts of the state in the last 11 days. officials say without hospitalization, the infection can be fatal. now, they want to know how those

>> we're investigating this cluster to determine if there's any comon linkage between these patients, but what we do know is, all four of them are injection drug users, and of course whenever you inject something into your body not using a sterile technique, you are putting yourself at risk. sean: state officials say they want health care providers to be aware that this infection is out there, and to report any cases they see. erin: if you felt some rattling on halloween, it may have been an earthquake. the u.s. geological survey says two small quakes hit new hampshire early monday morning. a 1.8-magnitude tremor was centered in salisbury. and about 10 minutes later, a 1.6-magnitude quake was registered in andover. sean: people visiting veterans park in manchester will likely notice scarves hanging on the trees and fences. volunteers at long-meadow congregational church put the scarves in the park for anyone who might need them this winter.

you have to be on your guard all the time. erin: after ransacking the home for more than 20 minutes, police say the men took off in the victim's car. the 2004 cadillac was found seven miles away, but again, the three men are still on the loose. sean: an alarming situation for police in louisiana. they say an 11-year-old brought a note to school yesterday, saying his mother was being held hostage. the note, apparently dated last friday and written by the boy's mom, quickly got the sheriff's attention. after questioning the child, deputies determined that the man holding the mother against her holding the mother against her will was donald ray guy. went to the home to try to rescue her. >> there's always a chill that goes through you when you understand that the child was going through a very bad environment. and the mother may be captive, and it may be worse than what we actually found. sean: when deputies entered the home, they say they found guy hiding in a closet. he was already facing domestic violence charges. neither the child nor his mother were injured.

42 degrees and a spectacular sunrise in dublin. look at all the colors. the sun is coming up. temperatures there are also in the 40's. most of us are sitting at slightly warmer temperatures. clinton falls at 49 degrees. manchester at 40 degrees. litchfield about 46 degrees. hudson, 45. in newbury, about 49 degrees. franklin, 38 degrees. a little cool in some spots from samarkand into franklin, webster. 40 degrees in tilton. in the north country, nowhere near as frigid as it was 24 hours ago. there were some teens and 20's. we are waking up to temperatures more like the standards that we have in late september. about 42 degrees in lancaster and 43 in jackson.

in 1950. we will be above the average, which is about 54 degrees for this time in november. we will be above that by almost 10 degrees. mostly cloudy skies, although there are going to be breaks in the clouds today. it is not one of those gloomy overcast days. it is one of those days when we will see clouds, occasionally the sun peeking out. frontal boundary starts to get closer to us. in the meantime, warm air coming out of the southwest will mean temperatures will get into the 60's across most of the state, well above seasonal averages, especially up north. here we go through the day. you can keep track of the time up here. this is lunch time and we are already in the 50's. some peaks of sunshine -- peeks of sunshine.

at 5:00. tomorrow morning, we start with clouds. maybe a couple areas of drizzle. heavy rain comes in after the lunch hour, and there could be downpours, even rumbles of thunder, especially around the commute time later in the evening. the big rain impacts through your commute will be low tomorrow morning. most places dry. tomorrow evening, it will likely be slow, with heavy rain coming through. high temperatures today -- look how nice it will be. in the upp0' country. the 60's from concord international and the seacoast. tomorrow a little bit cooler. we cool off in a bit way by friday, back into the 40's for highs. the weekend sunny. more passing clouds at this point. seasonably cool temperatures, upper 40's, low 50's. next week, clear conditions and relatively mild conditions for voting on tuesday, which is always a good thing. we do not need the weather interrupting that.

back the clocks this weekend. erin: today is weather wednesday, and this morning, kevin skarupa is in bedford to tell us about a special event coming up this weekend. the tenth annual manchester city marathon. the weather looking pretty good. kevin: yes, it is. temperatures in the mid-30's as we get the race going at 8:50 in the morning. 1700 runners expected in downtown manchester, some to do the half marathon, and others to do the full marathon, number marathon association with me. 10 years. this is the region i came back to run this. i had done the first annual. gary: you and i probably past each other on the course. kevin: i think you past me. gary: we will have to go back in the archives and check. kevin: a lot of people involved in this event over the years. gary: to get to an anniversary takes a lot of volunteers. i would like to acknowledge the people that brought it back from the years ago.

dave breeden, and a host of others. a lot of people put a lot of effort into this, and it is a great community event. kevin: we were talking throughout the morning, if people are tuning in, just the collaborative efforts of emergency management as well as the medical staff, and the volunteers. it is an amazing event put on, but a lot of logistics as well. gary: absolutely. when you think about -- you are covering worse 13.2 miles. how do you cover all of that? right places, coordinate, get the water out there, get the medical out there. it is a logistics management issue. kevin: first time i'm looking at the course on the map to get an idea, and this looks like it is going to be a fun track to run. gary: it is excellent. we are taking advantage of the city in the best way possible. give people a tour of the city and the surrounding area and it is pretty interesting.
