morning, the associated press declared that republican chris sununu won the race for governor here in new hampshire, edging out colin van ostern. erin: the senate race between kelly ayotte and maggie hassan is neck-and-neck, and too close to call at this point. there are about 1500 votes separating the two. the first congressional district was just called within the last hour or so. carol shea-porter is headed back to washington after beating incumbent frank guinta. the second congressional district was the first race to with annie kuster claiming victory just before 1:00 this morning. sean: too close to call was the catch phrase for the evening. we will have a closer look at each race in just a moment but first, let's check the forecast with kevin skarupa. kevin: 60's yesterday. likely low and mid 50's today. clouds making their way in, and a couple light showers, the first of two fronts crossing the

too close to call this morning. right now, the incumbent, kelly ayotte, has a very slim lead over governor maggie hassan. they are separated by about 1500 votes. sean: wmur's siobhan lopez is watching this race for us now and joins us in the studio. siobhan: this race was expected to come down to wire, as the two candidates were neck-and-neck all evening. and when it comes to who is in the lead this morning, it pension ask. democratic challenger governor maggie hassan addressing her supporters early this morning after midnight, telling them that her campaign tracked show a 5300 vote lead over kelly ayotte. gov. hassan: we all knew that this was going to be close. and while we are feeling good right now, this race is still too close to call. siobohan: the governor went on to tell her supporters to go home and get some rest, and hoped to deliver good news this morning. and also late last night, senator kelly ayotte addressed a cheerful room of her supporters before the votes began to tip in

after her speech, the incumbent says she's gone through tight races before. sen. ayotte: i had a primary like that in 2010. and i am upbeat. but, again, every vote matters, so we will be counting them all. siobhan: last night, senator ayotte told her supporters she would wait until later today to make an announcement about the election results. and of course we will continue to watch all of these results as they come in. live in the studio, siobhan lopez, wmur news 9. s of course, that story continues to unfold. the race for new hampshire's first congressional district was just decided around 4:00 this morning. erin: carol shea-porter is going back to washington. she defeated republican incumbent frank guinta in the fourth matchup for the two. shawn o'connor was a distant third. shea-porter has already served three terms in the past representing the first congressional district. rep. shea-porter: we feel confident. so i want to -- [laughter]

: every who has worked so hard for this. sean: congresswoman annie kuster is heading back to washington for a third term in a row representing new hampshire's second congressional district. she narrowly defeated republican challenger jim lawrence. kuster is the first woman to serve three terms in the district that serves the western and northern parts of the state. erin: one of the big national storylines coming into this election was which party would control congress, and this morning republs sean: that is right. in the senate, you can see the gop with 51 seats, the democrats with 45 seats, providing a narrow majority for the republicans. and in the house, the democrats gained a few seats, but not enough to take over, with republicans extending their six-year lock on that chamber. erin: and remember, you can get complete results on our newly-designed website. we have all the state races covered for you and you can read , analysis from our political

republican chris sununu will take over the corner office. he narrowly defeated colin van ostern for governor. senator kelly ayotte is leading her race for re-election, but the gap is small between ayotte and her democratic challenger, governor maggie hassan. about 1500 votes at this point. in the first congressional district, carol shea-porter has narrowly defeated incumbent frank guinta. she now retakes the seat she lost two years ago. erin: the second congressional district was the first race to be declared in new hampshire, with annie kustecl victory just before 1:00 this morning. sean: and here to break down some of these races, a familiar face, former political director scott spradling. a lot of folks went to bed not knowing what is going to happen. were they surprised? scott: absolutely. a lot of the battleground states and new hampshire polls suggested a very different outcome than what we saw. the big question is, what

group of voters that supported republican candidates that did not participate in polls, that did not answer the phone, lunch pail voters that showed up in big numbers yesterday and ended up shocking the world. erin: and of course he is the president-elect, but in new hampshire we have not declared a winner. there is only 300 votes separating the two. scott: it is remarkable watching how razor thin the is between republicans and democrats, between clinton and trump, twin payouts and ayotte and hassan. we see republicans controlling every aspect of state politics, but it looks possible all four of are members of congress will be democrats. sean: that is the big headline. the senate race is separated by 1500 votes. what happens now? scott: we wait for secretary of state bill gardner to give us official final numbers. there are a few holes, but significantly, as we wait is he

results. we do not have them yet. we are also looking for strong republican towns like litchfield and pittsfield that are strong republican locations in the state that always turn out gop votes. if kelly has a mildly going in, but she has no keene numbers, this could tighten before us is over. i think we are headed for a recount. sean:

sean: as you know if you were out yesterday voter turnout was , very high across the country and here in the granite state. erin: in fact, the new hampshire secretary of state was predicting a record, and several towns saw record numbers -- including durham, where they hit

up with several voters. suzanne: people lined up early to vote at broad street elementary school in nashua on tuesday. >> by 5:15, there were over 250 people in line, and they kept -- in line. suzanne: and they kept coming until the polls opened at 6:00 a.m. >> 357 people came through the ward in a half an hour. suzanne: chadwick has been moderator for nashua's ward one for the last 15 years. she's never seen so many people come out to vote. she believes it is both the national and statewide races that brought them to the polls. new people coming to register. for the first time. it is a lot of young kids that are coming in here. it is their future. >> i have two brand-new babies, so i definitely want to make my voice heard and know they grow up in a country where everything is fair. ask i am nervous about it. the choices were not the greatest. but i think it is a step in the right direction. suzanne: in nashua, suzanne roantree, wmur news 9

sign or waiting in line, the weather was nice. kevin: or you were a student who happens to have a day off. erin: right? sean: the timing worked out. kevin: you had a beautiful day to be outdoors. today not quite starting that way, or even finishing it. we have plenty of clouds out there this morning. a couple of light showers stripping in from the west. there could be a couple of wet highways through the morning commute. a lot of the activity back to our west along the first of two fronts will be drying up by late morning, early will be a cooler day. temperature statewide were in the 60's. today, it is 40's up north. cool air starting to add in out of the northwest later this evening. that will be around through tomorrow before the next front arrives. it gets even colder friday night and to start the weekend with a pretty good grades. a lot of this is going to try to bump into very dry air we have in place. we are not expecting a tremendous amount of activity out of this. but you will notice a certain

across the state early to mid afternoon, and i suspect behind that, a few breaks in the overcast, especially for the northern half of the state. you will notice the second front, more of a break, with partial sunshine before that arrives. that will have a pretty good wind out of the northwest, feeding in cold air of the central canada. temperatures in the 30's to lower 40's. we are looking for light showers early this morning in western areas of the state. you can see the gradual step ck the front that comes through friday morning is going to mean business. there will be a breeze out of the northwest at 5-15 mph through the afternoon. most of the shower activity long gone by 1:00 this afternoon. extra clouds in southeastern areas through later in the day, with maybe just a few breaks by the time we get through sunset. partial sunshine to the north and west. clearing skies in earnest with lows in the 20's and 30's overnight. overnight. tomorrow, we jumped back into

the republican rode a late surge and won most of the key swing states in yesterday's elections. that gives the gop control of the white house and both chambers of congress. now for a look at the governor's race, let's check in with ray brewer. ray: for the first time in more than a decade, there will be a republican in the corner office here in concord. it was a tight race, but early this morning, chris sununu was declared the winner over colin van ostern, the democratic challeng. win the corner office since craig benson in 2002. he served the last three terms on the executive council. at 42 years old, chris sununu will become the youngest governor in the country. now for a look at the u.s. senate race here in new hampshire, here is siobhan lopez. siobhan: it continues to be too close to call, the race for u.s. senate here in new hampshire. it is a tight one. the latest numbers show

speaking to supporters late last night, she was optimisitic about the outcome, noting she went through a tight primary race back in 2010, and she plans to wait until later today to make any announcements about the results. and her challenger, governor maggie hassan telling supporters in a speech around 12:30 this morning that her campaign has calculated more than 90% of the votes cast in the state and they believe that they have to lead. erin: and our coverage of the election results continues in a

sean: good morning, everybody. wednesday, november 9. thanks for joining us on news 9 "daybreak." erin: this morning, america has a new president-elect. republican donald trump was declared the winner of the 2016 presidential election around 3:00 this morning. the race was very close. with most precincts reporting, trump has 58,728,425 votes, has 58,637,055 votes. sean: and here is the number we all talked about. 270 electoral college votes were needed for one of these candidates to get into the white house. trump, as you can see, has 278. the hillary clinton has 218. here's a look at how the presidential race panned out here in new hampshire. donald trump with 48%, hillary clinton with 48%.

300 votes -- very close. erin: some of new hampshire's major races remained undecided until early this morning, including the race for governor. republican chris sununu was declared the winner, defeating democrat colin van ostern. the u.s. senate race is still up in the air. incumbent senator kelly ayotte has 48%. maggie hassan has 48%. a are separated by about 1500 votes at this point, with 93% of the precincts reporting. in the first congressional district race, democrat carol shea-porter was declared the winner shortly after 4:00 this morning. the race came down to her and incumbent republican frank guinta. she ended up with 44%, ginza == guinta 43%. and the second congressional district has also declared a winner. annie kuster defeated jim lawrence 50% to 46 percent. we'll have more on these election results coming up in

donald trump has been elected the next president of the united states. sean: that is right. he was declared the winner shortly before 3:00 this morning. mr. trump: i pledge to every citizen of our land i will be president for all americans. and this is so important to me. sean: and that was his reaction last night. as the votes were counted, it was not clear which candidate would edge out over the other, but in the end, it was donald trump who was declared the winner. erin: here in new hampshire, even as the president-elect, his campaign watch party was confident that he would win the race. the co-chair of the new hampshire trump campaign says this election was unique for a number of reasons, one being the dissatisfaction that voters had for both candidates. >> what that ended up creating was this last-minute kind of decision-making process. and i think what happens was that mr.

basically, of the campaign. he was able to really put together a lot of great rallies. sean: it was a long day for hillary clinton supporters in new hampshire. many were at a viewing party in manchester, where they watched the returns roll in from the granite state and across the nation. nothing was decided by the time democratic party chairman ray buckley told everyone to head on home. that's to head home for the night. several people were stunned by what they saw. >> it's a bit worrisome for me as a hillary clinton supporter and as a down-the-ticket democrat. i wouldn't think that it d >> it's good. you know i'm excited. , i'm happy to be participating in this type of democracy. this is really something special, and it's history tonight regardless of which way it goes, and i got to be part of it, so it's awesome. erin: now that granite state voters have made their voices heard, new hampshire has a new governor-elect. sean: that is right. republican chris sununu was declared the winner of the gubernatorial race early this morning.

47%. ray brewer joins us live at the statehouse with the latest on this very tight race. ray: very tight, sean. and it was a night that started with a lot of optimism ended on -- a lot of optimism for colin van ostern and his supporters, but it would end on a very somber note. confident colin van ostern as he cast his ballot. his supporters were encouraged when early returns showed van ostern in the lead. but as the night wore on, the race became too close to call. declared new hampshire's governor-elect. the sununu name is well known in the granite state. his father, john h served three , terms as governor in the 1980's, and his brother served as a u.s. senator. now this is the first time since , 2002 that a republican has taken the corner office. sununu will be sworn in as the new governor in january. reporting live in concord, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: all right, ray, thanks.

represent new hampshire in the u.s. senate. erin: right now, the race is too close to call. incumbent senator kelly ayotte has 48% of the vote to her challenger maggie hassan's 48%. there is about 1500 votes in between the two. kelly ayotte leading with 93% of the precincts reporting. seal on lopez -- siobhan lopez joins us with a closer look at this tight race. siobhan: senator kellyyo making more than 24 stops in 24 hours -- and she had another long night last night. an optimistic senator ayotte addressed her supporters last night but not long after that, , the race flipped, with governor maggie hassan taking the lead. news 9 spoke with ayotte one-on-one after her speech. the senator noting that she's been through close elections before. sen. ayotte: i had a primary like that in 2010, and i am upbeat. but, again, every vote matters, so we will be counting them all.

said she would wait until later today to make an official announcement about the election results. governor maggie hassan took the stage close to 12:30 this morning and told her supporters they knew the u.s. senate race would be close, and it was still too close to call. she went on to say that her campaign tracked 670,000 votes, and their numbers show a 5300 vote lead over kelly ayotte. the hassan campaign says they calculated more than 90% of the votes cast in the state, and they believed she had the lead. gov. hassan: there are still votes to count in a lot of small towns. and we are confident that we are going to maintain our lead when every vote is in. siobhan: governor hassan went on to tell her supporters to go home and get some rest. she said she hoped to deliver good news in the morning. even without this race being called, the republicans have officially retained control of the u.s. senate 51-47 over the democrats. just two races remain outstanding -- one in lousiana, and the battle here between ayotte and hassan.

sean: all right, siobhan, thanks. the first congressional district race was called around 4:00 this morning, just a couple of hours ago. it was down to either democrat carol-shea-porter or incumbent republican congressman frank guinta. this marked shea-porter's sixth run for the first congressional seat. she won, declared about 4:00 this morning. she also won three previous elections, meaning this will be her 4th term serving as congresswoman. erin: the race for the second congressional district was also a close one. but around 1:00 this morning the , associated press called it for incumbent democrat annie kuster. the congresswoman addressed her supporters at her campaign headquarters in concord around midnight before going home. and at that time, she didn't know the race was called but she did thank all of her supporters for all of their hard work. kuster is now the first woman ever to serve three terms in the house of representatives in the second district. and you can see the full results from the election by heading to our website. you can also find an interactive

extended last night after the city sent an e-mail with the wrong information. as wmur's jamie staton explains democrats filed a court challenge to extend those polling hours. jamie that email from the city : of dover stated that polls in the six wards here in dover would close at 8 pm. -- at 8:00 p.m.. they realized the mistake and sent two more emails, trying to correct to 7:00 p.m. make sure every last person was able to make it to the polls and vote, so they filed an injunction in superior court asking that dover voting be extended until 8:00 and they p.m., won. here is a reaction from both sides. >> it took correctivewe agreed l answer from the state that the corrective action was adequate. the democrats did not believe it. they brought it to court. the judge ruled that the polls

we respect the ruling of the court. >> we felt that could potentially disenfranchise hundreds of voters. this election is too important. it does not matter whether they are democrats or republicans. anyone who really wanted to vote this year needs to be able to vote. jamie: every ballot turned in after 7:00 p.m. was labeled with an "eh," many extra hour, encased in the future there needs to be an exclusion on any of these ballots. we visited four of the six wards in dover and found that there were 29 eh voters, and 4 of them after 7:00 p.m. in dover, jamie staton, news 9. sean: switching to other news a , man accused of fighting with a woman and her co-worker while claiming to be a vampire is due in court today. the incident happened early tuesday morning at the concord co-op. police say a woman was taking boxes outside when 21-year-old jacob may called out to her, claiming he was a vampire, and saying he could save her. police say may chased her inside the building and grabbed her. her co-worker then fought may to the ground. soon after, police arrived, and

officers say he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. erin: a massachusetts man is accused of trafficking heroin into southern new hampshire. 29-year-old francisco rodriguez-benitez was arrested last week on four counts of trafficking. he pleaded not guilty, and at last check he was being held on $300,000 bail. he's due in court next month. sean: turning now to sports, it was a tough loss fhe power play in the second period. that would start a run of three goals in just 70 seconds. that is a lot of scoring in a short amount of time. the bruins would come back to tie the game 2-2 on a power play goal. but the back breaker came with just a little over a minute left as paul byron put the puck past rookie netminder zane mcintyre, who had 20 saves. the canadiens went on to win it 3-2. >> now, your storm watch 9

for maybe a little bit of rain this morning. kevin: just a couple light showers out there. we still sorely need rain, and there just is not a lot going forward in the extended forecast that at least we can see at this point. and he raindrops we get out there, needed. we are not going to get much out of this. maybe 0.1 inches in places. clouds continuing to thicken up and build in. we will continue to see those fade away into the afternoon as the front comes through either side of midday. northwest starts to develop. that is the beginnings of the cooler air. air mass still in place from yesterday, which was temperatures in the 60's across a good part of the state. the rain shower activity not making a tremendous amount of eastward progress. the clearing mine does. that is up to western parts of new york. i suspect my early to mid afternoon that will start moving into northwestern areas of the state. the race will be on by sunset to see if you see a few brakes and southeastern areas.
