political ads and mailers and the millions of dollars spent, these candidates battled to a less than one tenth of one percent margin, out of more than 700,000 votes cast they were separated by just 1,023 votes. after an election night that looked like could it be a republican wave, democrats were cheering governor maggie hassan this morning, as she declared victory in an epic sen the next united states senator from new hampshire. reporter: hassan says she's ready to work with president elect donald trump. >> it will be my job in the united states senate to make the best decisions for new hampshire. to work with president elect trump, when it is in the best interest of new hampshire, and the country. and to stand up to him when with it isn't. reporter: the incumbent

statement the senator said i just spoke with governor hassan to congratulate her on her election to serve in the u.s. senate. i wish governor hassan, her husband tom and their children ben and meg the very best. secretary of state gardner spoke to the media when a recount looked like a strong possibility, saying the ballot counting could last through the thanksgiving holiday. >> it depends on how fast the process depends on the candidates and their observers, so it's hard to say, but it could be 10 days, it could be two weeks. reporter: now ayotte has decided she will let hassan's razor thin margin of victory stand. there is an odd symmetry to this for senator ayotte, as when she first won her republican primary for this seat in 2010 she won by

by a similar razor thin margin. live at the state house tonight, adam sexton, wmur news 9. tom: there are also breaking developments in the race for president. here are the latest new hampshire numbers in that race, which was claimed by donald trump overnight. overnight donald trump was named president. jennifer: but it wasn't until hours later that hillary clinton conceded and now the transition from candidate to president begins. political director josh mcelveen josh: throughout this campaign it may have been the most divisive and contentious in history, donald trump consistently spoke to his loyal base of support while waving off detractors. but this morning he took an approach we haven't seen before, speaking to those who did not support him. >> i'm reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and

a contrast from donald trump the candidate, the next president went onto thank his bitter rival hillary clinton saying the country owes her a debt of gratitude for her years in public service. hours later it was clinton's turn. >> donald trump is going to be our president. we owe him an open mind and the chance to lead. josh: the first other of business for trump will be to establish a cabinet that may include former senator scott brown, he believes t the one it saw at times during the campaign. >> he's a smart man, he's got a great family, he's going to surround himself with very good advisors and i'm hopeful that he will in fact understand that there is a dignity that goes on with the office. the donald trump that i know is the donald trump i saw last night. josh: outside the trump campaign office in manchester, volunteers dropped by to talk about the historic night. >> it changed from 254 to 274, i

josh: he says staffers today are returning on pure adrenaline. >> it's very exciting, we were up until 4:15, there was a lot of high fives, a lot of excitement in the office, we're looking forward to the next steps, which is a trump presidency. josh: a trump presidency. initially the shock and uncertainty surrounding that reality sent financial markets plunging as dow futures dropped overnight. but when the sun came up, optimism came with it and by close up more than 200 points. just part of the roller coaster ride that the country has been on how for more than a year. jennifer: here in new hampshire, more than 729,000 people voted for candidates printed on the election day ballot. tonight our team coverage continues with voter reaction to those results. wmurs jennifer crompton is live with that. reporter: donald trump's victory

the mood among those we spoke with today one of reflection. there was no one gloating, nor was there anyone preaching doom and gloom. but certainly there is huge disappointment among hillary clinton supporters, and worry about what a trump presidency might mean for issues like health care, immigration and equal rights for all. trump's supporters on the other hand call his victory a political revolution, and are excited for what lies ahead. >> things are going to change >> i am a happy man today. >> it certainly shows that people will turn the tide, if you push them enough. >> we have to deal with what's in front of us and pray. >> regardless if i like him or not, he is my president now. reporter: the general consensus among the people we spoke with today is they want to put the negativity behind us and move forward and heal.

another one that was decided in the wee hours, chris sununu was declared the winner this afternoon. he spoke to reporters, including kristen carosa. reporter: chris sununu spoke with reporters over at the graponi center in concord, he says it was a long night, he is sleep deprived but excited about this victory. governor elect chris sununu, who is currently executive councilor and the c.e.o. of waterville valley admits he knew this was the republican beat democrat and executive councilor colin van ostern by roughly 16,000 votes. >> i did get a call from colin van ostern this morning, and i also got a call from governor hassan. reporter: sununu says he's proud of the campaign he ran. >> we stayed optimistic, we stayed away from the attacks. that is the kind of politics for washington d.c. of it doesn't work here. reporter: now he says he looks

in january. >> whether we're talking about opioids, energy, health care, work force, all of these things we've been talking about throug the campaign cycle, these are real issues, we have to make sure we're putting real action behind our words. i do look forward to working with members of the house and the senate. i've already reached out the a lot of them, they've been reaching out to me. reporter: sununu says he continued to support now president elect donald trump. >> i don't know if the top of the ticket helped, i don't know if it hurt. i ran my race washington d.c. reporter: sununu will be the first republican in the corner office in 12 years, he'll be following in his father's foot sentence, john sununu, who was governor back in the 1980s. >> having my dad there last night was interesting, it was not political at all, it was just a dad. and it was just great to have him there. reporter: sununu was certainly emotional when he was talking about his father and this victory.

tom: now to some just released numbers in new hampshire's drug crisis. jennifer: there have been 30 the drug death -- 302 drug deaths in new hampshire, and 14 of those are fentanyl related, one of those deaths caused by fluoro fentanyl, which is stronger than fentanyl. tom: the man who police say claimed to be a vampire outside the concord food coop tuesday

stretches all the way into maine. mike: mike haddad, wmur news 9. josh j.: temperatures today were still above average, not as warm as yesterday of course, but we did top off in the upper 50's to 60 degrees in some parts of the state. farther north and it only may it into the 40's and western new hampshire as well. so very different, and that's because a cool front was rolling through the state so the cooler air made it to wesrn these areas last. but even after topping off in the midday hours, temperatures started tumbling in the afternoon. at the moment haven't changed a whole lot in northern and western new hampshire. we're down in the lower 50's in southeastern new hampshire. these temperatures are actually not too far off from where we'll be tomorrow for our highs within a couple of degrees. the winds are out of the northwest right now, 5, 15 miles per hour or so. and going to stay that way for

remain fairly light. but they are going to pick up, national the reason i'm showing you this map to show you lay thursday and into friday. friday will be the windiest with gusts of 30, 35 miles per hour. enough to russell up those leaves and certainly make it feel chillier. then as we get into the weekend it stays breezy, but the winds do calm down a little. but still breezy on saturday. saturday will be the cooler of the two days. look how temperatures have so consistent for the last several days, until that is yesterday. and today where the temperatures made it into the 60's, and today above average. but guess what, the next couple days we're going back to temperatures like these, the one exception will be on saturday. that will be the coolest day after a cold front rolls through on friday. a look at the radar showing the showers drying up pretty much all done, a couple of leftover sprinkles possibly in the salem, hampstead, kingston area and over toward pelham. other than that the showers are

done with them now for quite some time. quite some time. because of this giant area of high pressure building on in. there's one chance on friday, as a cold front reenforcing shot of cold air moves in on friday. that's why saturday will be cooler, we'll show you that on future cast. first of all the clearing skies tonight and into tomorrow we wake up clear and chilly, upper 20's and lower 30's with clouds that come and go through the day, on average partly sunny at times, mostly sunny. then on fri mixed showers in the mountains, this may change over to some snow showers from the upslope locations of the white mountains and northern part of the state. the big deal for most peel on friday will be how windy it will be, it will make it feel chillier, and the breezy conditions hang on into saturday. but the stronger winds go away. so the chance of rain we had of
