differences. we are now all rooting for his success and uniting and leading the country. elizabeth: 71 days to go until inauguration but the transition process starts today, and trump is not only meeting with president obama but with speaker ryan. elizabeth hur, abc news, washington. erin: democrats picked up a couple of seats in the u.s. senate, including right here in new hampshire. sean: incumbent kelly ayotte co governor maggie hassan. the final numbers show hassan winning by just over a thousand votes wmur's ray brewer is here now with reaction from both camps. ray while the results were very : close senator kelly ayotte did concede the race, giving up her chance to ask for a recount. the difference in the vote count was just 1/10 of 1%. governor hassan says the call from ayotte was warm and gracious. this also means that new hampshire now has the first all

marijuana after stopping a car for speeding on interstate 95 in north hampton this week. police arrested the driver 27-year-old nicholas leone of worcester, massachusetts and say he was planning to sell the pot. troopers say the drugs are worth about $21,000. they also seized more than $31,000 in cash. more than 300 people have now died from drug overdoses in new hampshire this year. and the state medical examiner's office says more than two thirds of those cases involveto -- fenton now --. another 98 cases are still pending toxicology results, and officials are predicting nearly 500 overdose deaths in the state this year. erin: police in burlington, vermont are now offering a $500 reward after a cat was found hanging from a tree in a city park. tiki's owner says he last saw his 8-year-old cat nearly two

body a few days later dead with a wire around his neck. so far investigators have not been able to determine who is responsible. the majority owner of the new england compounding center has been given a year of probation for her role in a deadly meningitis outbreak involving tainted steroids. carla conigliaro's husband, douglas was given two years of probation and combined, the couple has to pay nearly $60,000 in fines. the couple admitted to hiding more than $123,000 after the company declared bankruptcy following the outbreak in 2012. police say two teenagers riding their bikes in southern massachusetts ue shot. that man is in critical condition this morning and now police are looking for a car with florida plates they believe may be connected to this case. sean: a major construction project is officially compete in the state capital this morning. a ribbon cutting ceremony is set for this afternoon to open the concord main street project. work started in april of last year cutting four traffic lanes down to two, while adding a cobblestone median, wider

>> you are watching wmur news 9 daybreak erin fehlau, sean mcdonald, and meteorologist kevin skarupa. news 9 continues. kevin: thursday morning, november 10, a live look from the chartered trust building in concord. fair skies get us t pretty close to the averages this time of year, but we will be heading below those averages with the front approaching. erin: all elective surgeries at maine medical center in portland are on hold this morning because a patient may have a very rare but deadly disease. sean: listen to this. the cdc is investigating a possible case of prion disease, which usually involves consumption of or exposure to

transmitted via surgical tools. >> i can say it doesn't appear that there's any reason for concern for most people. sean: maine med says all surgical procedures have been halted out of an abundance of caution, while they sanitize equipment and surgical areas they hope to resume tomorrow. erin: our annual spirit of giving campaign is now underway and we are starting in nashua where several organizations are working to feed the hungry for thanksgiving. thanksgiving. this is the 16th year that thanksgiving dinner for people in the area. last year they served 300 and 50 -- 350 meals. now they are getting the menu together but they need things like juice boxes, canned corn, pies and other desserts. >> also things like hats and mittens and gloves and socks and things that as the weather is getting cold we work a lot with the homeless population here in nashua and with homeless population so those are always in need. erin: for more information about

sean: light bulb fell onto some cardboard yesterday, sparking a massive fire at a former steel mill in western new york. more than 100 firefighters struggled to contain the flames at a complex that now houses several businesses. the building is six blocks long and was engulfed in flames. look at that roof collapse. local residents were told to stay inside and smoke could be seen for miles. wildfires across parts of the southeast u.s. are creating health concerns, because of all the smoke in the air. this was the view over atlanta yesterday.

least five states this morning and officials expect it will take several days to get the flames under control, and health advisories have been posted for the rest of the week. erin: the stock markets seem to have weathered the presidential election well despite concerns in recent days. in fact, nearly all major markets around the world are up. the dow gained more than 250 points yesterday and the outlook for wall street today is positive. and standard and poors has already affirmed the united holding at aa plus. there is more bad news this morning for go pro. already facing poor sales numbers, the camera maker is now recalling about 2500 karma drones because some of them have lost power in mid air. all of the drones have been sold since october 23. go pro is offering a full refund for the $800 gadget. sean: starbucks is rolling out its annual red holiday cups around the world today, but this year's designs are a little

the company held a contest, asking customers to submit design ideas on instagram. a total of 13 were picked. 11 will be available here in the u.s., featuring things like snowflakes, santa, reindeer, and candy canes. last year the cups came out with huge controversy. sean: because they were red. erin: two cake artists in chicago are celebrating the cubs world series title with a massive cake. the master sugar artist at the worked with an intern on the display. i want to work there too. which took 45 pounds of sugar 23 pounds of chocolate and 10 pounds of rice crispies. it is on display at the school right now but will be presented to the mayor next week. erin: look at that, that is amazing. sean: wrigley field intake form. who has to be the first one to

so the air mass behind it comes from canada. the wind behind it will be the big story starting tomorrow afternoon. temperatures anywhere from the mid-20's low 30's this morning. today we are talking temperatures in the afternoon in the upper range of the 40's to the low range of the 50's. a light breeze at around five to 10 miles per hour. tomorrow will be the big story where you have wind gusting at times over 2mi to settle in across the lower portion -- a portion of the lower 48. highs today, 47 to 53, a light breeze out of the northwest this afternoon. overnight we will start seeing a front take its way into northern new hampshire and with that couple of rain showers. as that slides south through the morning, the wind will pick up

gusting at about 25 miles our. saturday, despiteful sunshine we are talking temperatures only -- despite full sunshine we are talking only temperatures in the 40's. on sunday, back in the low and mid 50's. a ridge of high pressure starts to had our direction which means temperatures in the 50's for most parts of the state next week. we start off in the 20's and you will notice the trend is for temperatures at or below the average for the weekend. we will moderate a bit by sunday with sunshine, and temperatures next week mid and upper 50's monday and tuesday. there is a chance there could be a system located just off shore wednesday and thursday with a few showers, but a relatively dry forecast after tomorrow. erin: and pretty mild for the

areas of arctic air expected within the next 10 days or so. erin: we want to check in with our top stories. ray: governor maggie hassan has a new job as the new senator for new hampshire. there was less than a 1000 difference in vote counts, but ayotte did concede the race. this means new hampshire has the first congressional delegation in the country. erin: state police say they found more than seven pounds of marijuana after stopping a car for speeding on interstate 95 in north hampton this week. police also seized more than $31,000 in cash. concord is celebrating the completion of the main street reconstruction project. a ribbon cutting ceremony is set for 4:00 this afternoon. sean: coming up on daybreak, a new england hospital is celebrating a rather unique birth.

sean: daylight saving time created a rather unique situation for a family in erin: it was bound to happen. emily and seth peterson welcomed twin boys at cape cod hospital early sunday morning. samuel was born at 1:39 a.m. and his brother ronan entered the world 31 minutes later after the clocks changed, meaning his official birth time is 1:10, before his older brother. the hospital says this is the first time they have had this happen. how cool is that? they have quite the story to

veterans day is tomorrow but nearly two dozen vets got to celebrate a little early. erin: 22 veterans in california just picked up their high school diplomas. they all served during world war ii, korea, or vietnam and were not able to complete their education at the time because of their service. the vets and their families were also treated to dinner. sean: sometimes the sacrifices are forgotten so it is nice years later they are recognized. coming up in the next half hour, some of the best bowlers in the world are in new hampshire right championships. erin: plus, an elderly woman has been waiting her whole life for this thrill. her reaction to finally riding a

president obama: the republican nominee is unfit to serve as president. mr. trump the last thing we need : is another four years of obama. nikole: after months of attacks on the campaign trail this morning the president and president-elect try to bury the hatchet. president obama it is no secret : that the president-elect and i have some pretty significant differences. but, remember, eight years ago president bush and i had some pretty significant differences. nikole: but just like his predecessor, president obama is pledging a smooth transition of power en trump. mr. trump: it is time for us to come together as one united people. nikole: trump's wife melania also meets with first lady michelle obama then mr. trump and vice president-elect mike pence head up to capitol hill for a sit-down with house speaker paul ryan. mr. ryan he turned politics on : its head and now donald trump will lead a unified republican government. nikole: today's meetings come against the backdrop of a divided electorate as anti-trump

around the country. hillary clinton accepted defeat with this message. ms. clinton donald trump is : going to be our president. we owe him an open mind and the chance to lead. nikole: clinton is offering to work with president-elect trump. but she acknowledged her loss is painful and will be for some time. in washington, i'm nikole killion, wmur news 9. sean: governor maggie hassan will be stepping into a new role next year after defeating kelly ayotte in the u.s. senate race. erin: senator ayotte conceded to the race was extremely close. in the end, only 1023 votes separated the politicians. ray brewer joins us live in the studio now to tell us how both sides are reacting to hassan's win. ray: as you can imagine, republicans are upset with losing representation in washington and some are already , looking ahead to 2020. >> i am proud to stand here as the next united states senator from new hampshire.

hassan declared victory, senator kelly ayotte conceded the race, giving up her chance to ask for a recount. in a statement ayotte said in part "now more than ever, we need to work together to address our challenges. the voters have spoken and now it's time all of us to come together to get things done for the people of the greatest state in this nation and for the greatest country on earth." governor hassan told news9 that the votes that stood between ayotte and another term in the senate amounted to only 1/10 of a percentage point, with hassan leading ayotte by just 1,023 votes according to the certified results. former house speaker bill o'brien is not shy about his opposition to ayotte who he says , turned her back on new hampshire republicans after she became a senator. he voted for conservative activist aaron day, and says he knows other leading republicans

that she could depart from the commitment that she made to all of us when she first was elected, to take new hampshire conservative values to washington. ray: now, as governor hassan prepares to head to washington, she's vowing to work for all people, no matter what their party affiliation. >> i believe we are stronger when we listen to all voices and all perspectives. ray: back in 2012, the granite state was the first to elect an all-femaon and now with maggie hassan winning the senate race new , hampshire will now have the nation's first, all-female, all-democratic, congressional delegation. in the studio, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: people in massachusetts have voted to legalize recreational marijuana, and that has some people in new hampshire wondering if the granite state should follow suit. starting december 15, it will be legal to grow and possess up to

massachusetts homes and one ounce in public. the executive director of new hampshire compassion.org has been a leader in the push to legalize medical marijuana and he says it would not be a bad for new hampshire to have a recreational pot law similar to massachusetts. >> there are a lot of people who use the substance in a safe and fine fashion, and if we stop trying to make it the bogeyman we will start to recognize that it is just a substance like anything else. sean: pot is a gateway to harder drugs. recreational marijuana was also on the ballot in maine but the vote was too close to call and officials say there will likely be a recount. erin: new on daybreak rochester , police are asking for your help in tracking down a hit and run driver. around 7:00 last night officers say a 26-year-old man was walking along betts road when he was hit by a car. the driver took off, leaving the victim lying on the ground. he was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. police are now looking for a dark colored sedan with possible

anyone with information is asked to contact the rochester police department. one of two joggers, hit by a car in bedford tuesday morning, is still in very critical condition. the second victim is said to be improving and has been moved out of intensive care. police say they were hit by a 16-year-old driver. they are now looking into whether frost on the windshield may have been a factor. sean: state police are investigating a deadly crash on i-93 in thornton. troopers say 2ar morning after his suv went off the road and hit some trees. police say it does not appear that alcohol or speed were factors in the crash. we do have an update now to a story we first told you about last month. a belmont police officer who fired his gun while attempting to arrest a man is now on paid administrative leave. on october 28, the belknap county attorney's office says the officer was trying to arrest

as moon was escaping, he allegedly dragged the officer with his car. the officer fired his weapon but authorities say moon was not hit. this morning moon is still on the run. he's wanted on charges of felony reckless conduct and resisting arrest. erin: an apartment owner in keene is facing a housing discrimination charge after he allegedly refused to rent a unit to families with children. the case came to the attention of the u.s. department of housing and urban development after a married couple filed a complaint alleging thala opportunity to rent the apartment. they claim that saari told them that he was not interested in renting to anyone with children and had just evicted a family with children because they were too loud. saari denies the accusations. sean: coming up on daybreak, a warning for those you who take vitamin d. doctors say you may be getting too much of the nutrient and that could lead to health problems. erin: and an exciting event is taking place, right here in new hampshire. we'll tell you about the international candlepin bowling

>> you are watching wmur news 9 daybreak with erin fehlau, sean mcdonald, and meteorologist kevin skarupa. now news 9 continues. kevin: thursday morning, november 10, upper 20's to lower 30's this morning and mainly fair skies. a blend of sun and clouds this afternoon with temperatures close to the norms this time of year. downs to continue. erin: a suspended massachusetts state trooper has been sentenced to four months behind bars after being convicted in connection with a deadly crash. sean: john basler was found guilty this week of drunk driving, reckless operation and carrying a firearm while intoxicated. back in 2013 authorities say basler was driving in plymouth, massachusetts when a car drifted into his lane and the two vehicles collided, head-on. the driver, susan macchi, and her 23-year-old daughter were

game. both of them were killed in the crash. basler was off-duty at the time. erin: actor brad pitt has reportedly been cleared of child abuse charges. an investigation was launched following an alleged incident, involving pitt and his 15-year-old son on a private plane. angelina jolie filed for divorce days after that alleged incident. she is now seeking sole custody of the couple's six children. sean: doctors are issuing a warning about vitamin d. they say manop need more of the vitamin than they actually do. they say less than 6% of americans, ages one to seventy are deficient in vitamin d, and only 13% are in danger of not getting enough. too much of the nutrient can lead to high levels of calcium in the blood which can cause nausea, kidney stones and other problems. doctors recommend getting 600 to 800 units a day from food or supplements. erin: researchers have uncovered a possible trigger for some

a recent study found that when a pregnant woman's water breaks to early the culprit seems to be , abnormal calcium deposits that make the amniotic sac prone to rupture. more research is needed to prove if this really plays a role in pre-term birth and if so, what can be done about it. sean: turning now to sports, the celtics took on the wizards in washington last night. early on the wizards jumped out to a the first quarter. but the celtics played much better in the second outscoring washington 35-24. still, boston never took the lead and the wizards easily won the game 118-93. the celtics host the knicks tomorrow. erin: this should be a great game. the patriots host the seattle seahawks on sunday night football, and it will be a great one. this will be a rematch of the patriots win in super bowl 49. the pats are favored by 7 and a half points.

pattern lately and today, a little bit of a break from that with partial sunshine and a front coming through tomorrow will start taking a dip temperature wise into the weekend before moderating early next week. the coolest temperatures look to be friday night and saturday, and saturday evening before we start moderating starting on sunday, and a good portion of next week should be mild as well across most of the state. notice the origins of this one are very different than the one that came in yesterday. this comes in from candidates are there will be a punch of cooler air. either side of 30, not much fog to contend with. the sunshine should be bright through the day, blending with a few fairweather clouds this

afternoon turns to mostly cloudy skies overnight. 47 to 53 or 54 with a fairly light western, southwestern breeze as the sun sets, things are fairly quiet. overnight different starts to slide itself and a few showers in the north country by tomorrow morning with temperatures in the 30's and 40's. in the mor wind picks up behind it. temperatures cool off after sunset. that is with a wind out of the northwest gusting over 25 miles per hour. even if the temperatures do not dip, it will start to feel cold. still breezy out of the west, northwest on saturday and it finally starts to lighten on

starts to translate in our direction. a little bit of a lighter breeze and warmer temperatures for the first half of next week. temperatures today either side of 50, fairweather clouds, cooler than yesterday with a much lighter wind. tonight we drop into the 30's and 40's. a front approaching the north country by early tomorrow morning. we cannot rule out a couple of elevation, but the wind will be up and that will be your story on veterans day. a few flurries in the mountains on saturday, otherwise breezy with temperatures in the 40's at low to mid 50's on sunday. sean: cold nights. kevin: definitely the next couple of nights. erin: when that emergency call comes in you never know what you're going to face. police in grafton, massachusetts
