they received a call about a woman out in her kayak who appeared to be having a hard time navigating the choppy waters. it's very windy out here today. when rescue crews arrived they found the debris field on the make, which let them to the kayaker's body. the chief is now urging people who live out here around the lake to avoid it when conditions are so rough. >> a lot of the people that live around bow lake,he pretty hardy individuals, and they'll go out on just about any day to get a little recreation in, a little exercise. it wasn't a very wise choice to go out today, but it is what it is. reporter: the woman is believed to have been a resident of the lake. her husband came out to identify her body. no name has been released yet. live in stratford, shelley walcott, wmur news 9.

scattered power outages, and tree limbs down reported across new hampshire. right now eversource is reporting about 1100 outages. jennifer: that win is also blowing in some colder air. chief meteorologist mike haddad is in now with a look ahead at the weekend. mike: it is chilly and the winds still active out there and i think they'll continue through midnight, shortly after before diminishing. top gusts close to 100 miles per hour atop mount washington, and close to 50 in manchester. any time you get those winds scattered outages and we did see that across the state from lay morning to the present hour. right now sustained win anywhere from 7 to 23 miles per hour, but the gusts are still up over 30. so still quite active, could see a few scattered outages continuing before the winds shut down, but there's a lot of chilly air in place, holding out for snow showers in the white mountains and parts of the great north woods right now.

of that straight ahead. tom: after losing the presidential election, democrats are now looking at the party's future. jennifer: a familiar face from new hampshire could play a role in reshaping the democratic national committee. wmur's siobhan lopez is live in concord with this. reporter: he hasn't made a decision yet, but new hampshire democratic party chair ray buckley says he's involved in active conversations with people across the country about a possible run for a democratic national committee chairman ce >> for too long we've allowed the washington d.c. insiders to control the national committee. reporter: buckley is moring the possibility of becoming the leader of the democratic national committee, as the party has begun post-election soul searching. the party has had an acting chir since the convince in july when e-mails released by wikileaks

howard dean and martin o'malley are also in the running. bernie sanders tweeting out the name of u.s. representative keith ellison from minnesota. >> this is a young muslim american from minnesota who represents a new generation of leaders in congress. reporter: as for buckley, he's been an officer of the d.n.c. for the last eight years. and his experience on the local level goes back to when he was 18 years old. >> i have a sort of perspective of reporter: leaders including u.s. senator elizabeth warren are urging the party tole breakings a more populous economic message. buckley sees the future of the party as taking more of a grass roots approach to campaigning. >> i think people understand that elections are won in the states, in the communities, not what's going on in washington d.c. reporter: buckley expects to make his decision within the next few weeks. the new chairman will be elected

tom: tonight former governor sununu reflexes on the new administration. wmur's jennifer crompton sat down with him this afternoon. reporter: former new hampshire governor john sununu was named white house chief of staff two days after george h. bush accepted the presidential nomination in 1988. he kno ahead as the government transitions from an obama to a trump administration. >> i feel a little sorry for them for perhaps underestimating how much work there is to be done in the next 70 days. reporter: he says donald trump needs to quickly decide who will fill six key positions. >> in the white house, it's the national security advisor, the chief of staff and the president's legal counsel. and in terms of the cabinet, it's the secretary of treasury,

reporter: there was large crowd on hand this morning in boscawen to witness a moving tribute to generations of military members. they have protected our freedom, defended our borders, and safeguarded a way of life we often take for granted. on this day, we honor the veterans and remember the sacrifices they have made. >> to me it's patriotism. at the fullest. it's a >> we can honor them by taking full advantage of the freedom that they fought so courageously to preserve. and by making sure that our country reflects the values that they fought for. reporter: since 9/11, 3,000 new hampshire national guard members have served overseas, fighting the war on terror. during world war ii, 12% of the nation's population was involved in the military. today that number is less than

tom: state police responded to what they thought was a truck fire on the everett turnpike in nashua this morning and actually found a semi trailer broken in half. it was hauling recycled magazines at the time. investigators are now trying to determine if there was something wrong with the truck or it simply wasn't loaded properly. and now onto new hampshire's drug crisis, hundreds of health care providers from across the state gathered to share solutions in this jennifer: they talked about the great strides made, more than 740 people have shown up at fire stations asking for help. between 60 and 70% of them have remained drug-free. but those attending the summit say more work needs to be done, as the face of addiction keeps changing. >> heroin is no longer on the scene and it's now fentanyl. and my understanding is that new hampshire has seen its first case of 47700. and that's a bad thing.

tom: well, it tonight's spirit of giving, a 13-year-old is spearheading t drive. >> from now until november 23 she's teaming up with new hampshire food bank to raise awareness, and wants to get people to donate. donations can be dropped off at local businesses in hampstead, sandown and kingston. >> so many people are food insecure and we just take what we have for granted. we really need to appreciate what we have and realize that there are people out there who aren't as fortunate as us. jennifer: that young lady is hoping that this will be a big

for christmas. mike not only has the wind continued, but the chilly air moving in as well and it has produced a few snow showers in the last few hours across the white mountains and great north woods. so signs of winter, especially in northern parts of new hampshire. but you factor in the wind and it feels a bit like early winter in many parts of southern new hampshire as well. mid 30's in the great north woods. however places like securities town, pittsburg already freezing. only around 40 degrees, that's it, around manchester. those winds have been active all day long, 20 to as much as 50 miles per hour. so wind advisories will remain in effect up until about 8:00 this evening. so anticipate those gusty winds through then. still quite breezy through midnight, they'll gradually shut down later tonight. right now gusting to between 20 and 32 miles per hour of could

before they weaken. here we go, the first time this season, the old wind chill map makes a return. you factor in the win and the current temperature and it feels like 18 below over 6,000 feet up atop mount washington. so compared to that, 30's are nothing. overnight tonight temperatures will fall, but only back to seasonably chilly levels. typically the wind will stir things up and prevent tho early tomorrow morning. a lot of cool air over eastern canada, now spilling into the great lakes and midwest as well. that will continue to build in for the next couple of days, tat least through early sunday before temperatures begin to rebound. later on clouds in southern new hampshire will give way to clearing and it will be mainly sunny el tomorrow morning.

fairly nice after that chilly start. the active but not as much as today. monday our temperatures get well above the average to kick off the next week. but plenty of sun each of the weekend days. in between it will be clear at night. highs tomorrow only lower 40's north, mid 40's in the lakes region through the upper valley, right around 50, concord points south and southeast. but that's about two or three below the average f moving ahead to sunday we get a little above the average, so back into the upper 40's north and between 50 and 55 elsewhere. sun, a few clouds up north and mostly sunny across the lakes region and points south. beyond that we start to warm up even more. monday we'll be up near 60 degrees, and then temperatures begin to cool off a little bit. not due to the fact that we've got a cold air mass moving in, but because the clouds begin to advance, so tuesday afternoon

exact tame line or how much rain, but we are till in that severe drought, about 20 to 30% below the average rain since the first of the year. we'll try to figure out exactly how much to anticipate as we go through the weekend, the rain tapers off early wednesday, and then mainly dry for the rest of next week. we're less than two weeks from thanksgiving. tom: hard to believe. and the football season is wrapping down and i guess it's do or die for the u.n.h. wildcats. >> they need to win tomorrow, they should. we'll talk with the coach.
