of at least five large brushfires across the granite state. some have been burning close to 48 hours. i am cherise leclerc. adam: i am adam sexton. cherise: we looking at images from the largest fire burning in albany. officials say the fire is near the kancamagus highway and pass-a-conaway road, more than 100 acres have been destroyed by the flames. adam: several towns dispatched afternoon around 4:00. no word on how the fire started or if there were any injuries. cherise: the weather is not offering any help extinguishing the flames. let's check in with hayley lapoint. hayley: the weather was beautiful. when it is totally dry, we dig deeper into the drought and it continues to cause problems especially now that green up is gone. everything is really dry. lots of fuel for the fire's.

danger. reporter: over the last few months, hudson police have had a significant increase over last year of sick wildlife, especially foxes showing up in people's yards. police say because of the behavior of the animals, they believed they had distemper which is viral. police say it is highly contagious to dogs and cats and fatal. animal in the yard, keep your household pets indoors and away from the area the wild animal was located until it has rained or you can clean it. >> one of the other things the wild animals will display is they almost look tame where they are not running away from you. they will be lethargic. if there are young children,

animal in your yard acting streaming, give police -- acting strangely, give police or animal wildlife a call. cherise: thank you. combating the drug crisis on the streets. did you happen to notice these highway signs? they were up in 40 locations. manchester police is partnering with new hampshire state police to utilize dot signs throughout the state to spread awareness. it's part of a new drug enforcement agency program called dea 360. part of a pilot program that will bring in federal dollars to the state to help in the fight against opioids. more details about the three-pronged program are expected to be released this week. adam: we have learned president-elect donald trump has chosen rights previous as his white house -- reince priebus a% his chief of staff and steve

puts together his upcoming administration. today president-elect donald trump is saying social media helped him win the white house. throughout the campaign he used , his twitter account to attack and mock his opponents but in an interview set to air tonight on "60 minutes," trump says once he's in office, he'll tone it down. whether he does or not everyone will be checking in on @realdonaldtrump. in nashua during the primary, donald trump professed his love for social media. donald trump: that's one of the things i like about twitter. i'm able to do in a few words if somebody hits me, i can hit them back. you know, in the old days i couldn't do it. when you have 12 million people between twitter and facebook, that's like owning "the new york times" without the losses. you know? you just go bing, bing they hit you. you go bing, bing, bing, bing. all of the sudden they're like devastated. adam: now, as president-elect, trump is promising restraint. >> i don't think we've seen the end, by any means, of trump

adam: even as trump is promising to keep things more presidential online he was at it again on , twitter this morning going after the "new york times," claiming they are losing subscribers due to highly inaccurate coverage of the trump phenomena. cherise: right now crews are , searching through the rubble for survivors of a powerful 7.8 earthquake that rocked new zealand this morning. at least two were killed several buildings damaged. as abc's jennifer eccleston tells us, emergency official higher ground in threat of a tsunami. reporter: shattered glass and fractured nerves in new zealand. the island nation rocked by a major earthquake overnight. sirens ringing out across several coastal towns. many people waking up to shaking and things crashing to the ground.

reporter: residents report the first quake lasted two or three minutes followed by strong aftershocks. >> doors were opening and closing. the whole house was moving. it was creaking, moving. reporter: the strength of the initial 7.8 was enough to crack roads and damaged buildings. this store just one example. products knocked off shelv the quake strong enough to send water out of an inground swimming pool. >> this is my apartment after the earthquake. reporter: many people spent hours standing outside evacuated buildings. and the quick did trigger tsunami waves which put the coastline on alert. earthquakes are common in new zealand with sits along the ring of fire, an area of seismic faults in the pacific ocean.

of our future as well. cherise: talk about some of the homes or areas you have been working on lately and things you have accomplished already. >> the preservation alliance is 30 years old. we are very fortunate to have great people to work with all over the state. we are seeing great successes in communities. a recent one is in stratham. it the town gave themselves a great birthday present. we help them save this great farm, the homestead. it is this wonderful, extraordinary, ordinary farmer's home and tells the story about work and home life, how intertwined it was back then and is again today. cherise: if people are watching, they have maybe an historic home or building on their property

have been kicked out. the academy has faced public scrutiny for its handling of more serious sexual assault allegations in the past. the teenager is not facing any criminal charges. right now, an investigation is underway in massachusetts after a gas station clerk was robbed at gunpoint. adam: as rhondella richardson from our sister station wcvb tells us, both of the suspects wore masks. one was armed with a knife while the other brandished a gun. money. i thought they would not leave if i did not give them more money. reporter: she is working the same gas station cash register that was storm to friday around 10: 20 p.m. by masked men. >> it was so scary. one had a knife. the other had a gun.

is recovering tonight after being shot several times. cherise: authorities say the officer was responding to reports of a theft in anchorage when a man walked up and opened fire. >> almost immediately, the person this officer came in contact with ambushed the officer. totally surprised the officer. cherise: police say the suspect was later killed by responding officers. tonight, an investigation is underwayne in albany. police say hundreds of shoppers fled in panic but no one was hurt. more than 100 officers were dispatched in response as the mall was placed on lockdown. investigators are reviewing security cameras for clues. adam: coming up, smoking rates are at a low level nationwide. cherise: the cdc saying there still major concern.

cherise: scientists have created an hiv test that's performed on a usb stick. researchers at imperial college in london and dna electronics say the device uses a drop of blood to test for hiv. within minutes, the device sends plugged into a computer. the device is still in its early stages. recently, scientists tested nearly 1000 blood samples and received 95% accuracy. adam: new research from the cdc says that smoking rates have hit an all-time low. researchers say the number of smokers dropped about 15% between 2005 and 2015. officials say more anti-tobacco action is still needed. nearly half of all cancer

according to the cdc, smoking rates are highest among men. no matter what your political views are, this election season has left many people stressed. now, a new york artist is trying to make things just a little easier. it's a simple idea. subway riders are given a post-it note and a pen. and they're given a chance to write down their frustrations and leave them on the wall. the project started before the election to give people the chance to get anything off their chest. escaped outside today and hit the slopes for a good cause. bretton woods held an event to fight hunger in the granite state. skiers who brought a non-perishable food item got a free lift ticket. the say goodbye to hunger event ended about an hour ago. bretton woods will officially open closer to thanksgiving. ski lovers rejoice, the jackson ski touring center in jackson will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for their new half a million dollar expansion monday. the cross country ski center has

new trail bridges. they hope to open to the public around mid-december. the moon tonight is looking bigger and brighter than it has in nearly 70 years. scientists say we will have prime viewing of this supermoon tonight and tomorrow. let's check in with meteorologist hayley lapoint to see if any clouds could block our view tonight. hayley: we are sitting pretty shower. many of you could not see it because of the clouds. it is beautiful now. we are getting pictures of the supermoon. what is the supermoon? it is not that huge of a difference. . when you step outside, you will notice a slight difference in the way the moon looks in terms of how bright it is. it will be brighter and it will look slightly bigger.

this will not happen again until 2034. there will be another supermoon in december but it will not be as big as tonight. the best viewing time is now until about midnight. tomorrow night should be good with peak viewing tonight and tomorrow night. i will talk more about the weather for the week ahead including the risk for wet weather. adam: as hayley the first big snowfall, some are dreading it.

totally clear skies now. we have high pressure building in from the west. that will suppress any clouds from being able to bubble up. even tomorrow looks like one of those days when we will have almost totally clear skies. today, the winds have been coming out of the west and even northwest. tomorrow, high pressure will slide to the east of us. therefore, the winds will start to shift and become more southerly and westerly. tomorrow. tomorrow will be a few degrees warmer than today. today was a little on the mild side with highs near 60 in a lot of spots. here is where we sit now. after dark with clear, temperatures will drop quickly. we are already in the low 40's in whitefield. 40 in berlin. 49 in concord. 55 in manchester. overnight, we will drop into the

temperatures in the 50's. the average high is about 50 degrees. as you see through the rest of the week and into next weekend, we are above that. it looks like november is hanging onto the trend we have had all summer of being above average and warmer. cherise: what a fluctuation between 60 tomorrow and a really cold night. hayley: warm days, cold nights. that continues on. adam: thanks. winter season, a lot of people are thinking about snowfall and skiing. we figured we would visit a place with an appropriate name. adam: we're talking about snowville. it's a little village in the town of eaton not far from conway. as wmur's sean mcdonald tells us, it may be off the beaten path but residents and regular visitors like it that way.

counter where we get food and coffee and camaraderie. reporter: around the corner, you will find the inn at crystal lake. it has been taking and guests since 1884. you can still sleepy or, get a drink, or listen to opera from the owner. >> for almost 11 years, we have been doing opera dinners once a month. a four-course dinner >> ? reporter: just up the road from the town center, you find the village of snowville. named for joseph snow who walked here from maine in the early 1800: to build a home. she is one of the many descendents.

throughout the 1800's and early 1900's, they made snowville a bustling area. many descendents still live in snowville. >> it is a quiet and peaceful place. it is very fun to walk up and down the road and see her family and wave -- see your family and wave. reporter: and if you walk to the top of theil incredible views and a popular restaurant. most make this a regular visit. >> ? reporter: perhaps one of the interesting finds in snowville maybe this place. in the late 1800's and early 1900's, this house had a slave

working here. reporter: she knows all about the factory. she has lived here for 20 years. these custom-made factory machines turned out a variety of sleighs until the automobile arrived in the early 1900's and demand dropped. to survive, he switched to toy making. the old factories preserved the old factories preserved today. today. the 1970's to retire and run an antique store. >> it needed a lot of work but we were young and foolish. reporter: now at 93, her famous slave mill -- sleigh mill antique store is closed. >> this is where they did the upholstery work.

you pull this. osha would love something like this today. reporter: edith knows a thing or two about running heavy machinery. in world war ii, she was an airplane mechanic in the military. when she and her husband moved into the old factory, they used their skills to transform the painting room upstairs into a home. >> just the space upstairs, our living >> ? reporter: they used auctioned off items from the historic crawford house to build their home. these were once the famous dining room doors. >> teddy roosevelt stayed. he might have touched these doorknobs. reporter: if you look close, you can still see markings left a century before.

cherise: talk about a chance encounter. three new jersey vets certainly have a story to tellon stranded motorcyclist on the side of the road. little did they know it was bruce springsteen. adam: the men say he was really down to earth. they mostly talked about motorcycles and his time growing up in new jersey. life-long opera lover justice ruth bader ginsburg made her official operatic debut last night. cherise: the supreme court justice didn't have a singing role but spoke a few lines in the opening night of "the daughter of the regiment" with the washington national opera.
