adam: now at 6:00, firefighters battling flames in the white mountains. the brush fire now burning more than 100 acres. hayley: it felt milder today, and there's more of that to come this week. how mild it will be and when rain cools us back down. for sick wildlife. authorities are trying to find out what's causing foxes to become ill. adam: the president-elect says social media helped him win the election. but we will tell you why his distinctive voice may now be silenced in the oval office. >> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now, wmur news 9 at 6:00. adam: right now, a sizable fire is burning in the white mountains.

brush fire in albany under control. good evening. i'm adam sexton. cherise: and i'm cherise leclerc. firefighters responded to other fires today. wmur's mike cronin is in new london with a warning from fire officials. mike: fire departments in the state are on alert for brushfires. today, half a dozen started in towns across new hampshire. the biggest is in albany whe national forest. officials say the fire danger is moderate book could change to high with warm temperatures this week. the state fire marshal says two of today's fires were started by lawnmowers. fallen leaves and high winds have created issues. while the fires are not unusual this time of year, they are burning deeper into the woods. >> it burns fairly deep.

the top service -- surface might have some dampness but down deep it is still dry. mike: if you plan to burn outside, you need a permit. officials are urging people to be careful using wood stoves and getting rid of the ashes. cherise: thank you. dry conditions are fueling the wildfire and making it difficult for firefighters to put out the flames. meteorologist hayley lapoint tells us if there's any relief in the forecast. hayley: rain this week coming in, but we need a lot to put a dent on the drought. this is the latest map. it comes out every thursday. we are still in severe drought in many locations, including southern areas of the white mountains region and into manchester. extreme drought in far southern new hampshire along the border. that includes nashua and salem. still very dry, running in the double digits in terms of how

whole lot of nothing over us. totally clear skies which is perfect because we have a cool site overhead tonight. the supermoon going on. temperatures in the 30's and 40's now. overnight we will fall into the 20's and 30's with clear skies. coming up, i will talk about when we get some rainfall. i will show you the timing of the showers in a few minutes. adam: thank you. authorities in hudson are warning residents increase in sick wildlife. suzanne roantree is in hudson with what you should be looking out for. reporter: over the last few months, hudson police have had a significant increase in the number of sick wildlife showing up in people's yards. the majority of the animals were foxes. >> we are pretty sure it is to his temper. reporter: distemper is viral and

especially to dogs and cats. we are asking if people have one of these animals in the yard, do not let their pets out and keep them away from the area the animal was in until it rains and gets washed away or they can clean the area. reporter: a wild animal with distemper will appear to be tame, but police say stay away from it. because of overcrowding of the fox population and the human population moving in. we are not having the trappers harvesting them. reporter: area residents we talked to had not heard about the foxes. >> i never let my dog out unleashed. >> i am more worried about the ticks than the other animals. reporter: police say making sure

difference. >> check them for ticks. the last fox we had was covered in ticks. that is one of the ways the disease can be spread easily. reporter: hudson police say if you have wildlife that appear to be sick in your yard to immediately give them a call. suzanne roantree, wmur news 9. cherise: a driver is facing several charges after police say he was driving the wrong way on i-93 in new hampton. eay of a car going southbound on the northbound side of i-93. state police arrested 21-year-old matthew adlard of gilmanton on charges of driving while intoxicated, reckless conduct, and possession and transportation of a controlled drug. adam: donald trump is selecting the first members of his new administration. he has chosen republican party chairman reince priebus as his chief of staff.

for its coverage. cherise: thousands of toys as well as socks, hats, gloves, and pillows will be sent to kids who are homeless or are at risk of becoming homeless. "finders keepers" collected the items at their location in exeter. they collected 27,000 new toys and over 1,800 other items like socks and blankets. manchester police department and health department help distribute the items to kids in need. adam: a great cause. saving more than just the animals that live there. how these rescued horses are also helping veterans. cherise: why the moon will look different and the best time to see it. hayley: a beautiful shot of the supermoon. totally clear skies now. it is chilly.

helping out at the farm in chichester today. adam: the farm is often veterans the chance to connect with these noble creatures. she opened the farm to help heal rescued horses and says she is finding she is helping humans to heal, too. it has a therapy program that began after one veteran realized being with the horses help him feel calm. >> when i starteai language. what that taught me was what we just spoke about, that being angry and isolating does not work. adam: if you would like to know more about the program and farm, log on to wmur.com. cherise: if you look into the sky tonight, you will notice the moon is bigger than usual. tonight and tomorrow, you can see the supermoon. one of our photographers

as the sun was setting. the supermoon is the closest full moon of the year. this one is super special. it is the closest the moon comes to us in over 69 years. nasa says the moon will be closest just before 6:30 tomorrow morning. adam: are we going to be able to tell it is the closest it has been in 70 years? hayley: i hate to be the debbie talking about the supermoon for so long. you will notice it is slightly brighter, maybe slightly bigger. it is not like it is going to be huge. it is not going to like up -- light up the sky like they like. -- light up the skylight daylight. it is kind of cool so check it out.

>> now, meteorologist hayley lapoint and your stormwatch 9 forecast. hayley: good sunday evening, everybody. if you look closely at the lake, you can see the reflection of the moon. it is big and bright tonight. 46 degrees. 51 in derry with clear skies and light win you can check it out tonight and tomorrow night. it is the closest and brightest supermoon of 2016. you will notice a slightly different looking moon. it will be a little bit bigger and a bit brighter. it is the largest since 1948 and we will not have it be this bright and big until 2034, so check it out.

sunset tomorrow. totally clear skies are getting help from the high-pressure over us. that is suppressing clouds, keeping the clouds away. you have to go all the way back to minneapolis to see any cloud cover in iowa. we have very quiet weather for the start of the workweek before things start to change. the high temperatures today were comfortable. it was great for yard work. manchester. 59 in nashua. lower 50's in whitefield and berlin. the average this time in november is about 50. in some locations we were 10 degrees above that. temperatures now have fallen into the 30's. coolest in the north country. 34 in berlin. 46 in laconia. 49 in manchester. continuously falling with the clear skies right now. here we are 7:00 tomorrow

need the shades driving into work. kids at the bus stop need the heavy jacket. quickly, temperatures will go up. by 3:00 in the afternoon, some of us will be close to 60 degrees. here is 5:00 in the evening. the commute home will be dry. you will be able to see the supermoon again. after midnight tomorrow night, we will have clouds starting to fill in. with rain moving in from the southern part of the state around lunchtime continuing north until the evening. it will be a nice come a healthy dose of rain in some places. in some places, maybe an inch or so which will help with the drought. tonight, moonlit skies. a live look in plymouth where it is clear. temperatures in the upper 20's north to 30's in the southern part of the state with winds out

meredith getting into the mid and upper 50's. in the north country, mid 50's for lancaster and berlin. tuesday we have rain moving in. it will be cooler in the 40's. we start to warm up and get the sunshine back for the end of the week. next weekend, sunshine, temperatures in the 50's. showers. earlier this week, i got to visit laconia. this was the pleasant street school. i got to speak to all of the students. we had so much fun talking about whether instruments, satellites, and radars. in my favorite thing to talk about, tornadoes. i wanted to say thank you to them for allowing me to come in and they gave me this great

visits. adam: i get the sense there will be many meteorologist coming out of new hampshire in the future. cherise: they learn from the best. adam: speaking up. [laughter] jason: you mean the patriots? they play in primetime tonight, hosting the seattle seahawks. it's a rematch of one of the most exciting super bowls in recent history. we all remember the interception. new england is 7-1 and coming off a bye ek seahawks played on monday night and now have to fly across the country to take on the pats tonight. advantage patriots. new england also got a boost to its running game this weekend, activating dion lewis from the physically unable to perform list. he was recovering from a knee second surgery. tom brady has yet to throw an interception this season. he will work hard to keep that streak going against a very good seattle defense. game time tonight at gillette stadium is 8:30.

turnovers for us. i know they preach that a lot. coaches talk to us saying it is all about the ball. they have thrived with turnovers. it is a turnover-driven defense. they have a lot of playmakers. it is going to be a big challenge for us. jason: elsewhere, texans and jaguars. with the play action and with ryan griffin for the touchdown, the first touchdown of the season for the tight end out of londonderry. texans win 24-21. griffin had three catches. it's championship week for six high school football teams. the matchups are set. after yesterday's six semifinal games, three of which needed overtime, and only one was decided by more than a touchdown. all three championship games will be played at unh on saturday. in division i, it will be exeter and bedford.

ii and iii yesterday. plymouth and bow both came away with upset wins on saturday. the bobcats knocked off undefeated windham. they play in the title game for the first time since 2013. bow will make it's third championship game appearance in school history, the other two were in division v and division iii. two more upsets in division iii. stevens rallied to beat undefeated monadnock, the cardinals haven't won a state football title since 1968. inter-lakes-moultonborough kn overtime, they return to the title game for the second straight season. college hockey, unh home with merrimack college this afternoon. unh on the power play. patrick with a nice pass to michael who nets his fourth of the season. 1-0. merrimack scored the next three
