problems along the seacoast. from the wzid traffic network, i'm deb davidson. sean: right now police in lebanon are looking for the man they say attacked a woman who was out for a walk. erin: the woman was not seriously hurt, but it was a completely random attack. she was walking loop road near dartmouth hitchcock medical center around 5:40 last night when she was attacked from behind. the woman was able to fight back, and the man ran off toward the parking lot, and she was not seriously hurt. police are now looking for a white man between 18 and 25 years old, about 6 feet tall with shaggy, dirty blonde hair. he was last seen wearing a dark hoodie and took off in a dark colored, four door sedan. sean: police in pelham are looking for two men that they say attacked another man with a fire extinguisher during a home invasion over the weekend. investigators were first called to an apartment building on

was going off, but then officers learned that two men forced their way into an apartment. the victim was treated for a cut to his head, and a woman inside was not hurt. police say this appears to be a targeted attack, and they do have suspects. erin: dozens of firefighters will be back in the white mountain national forest this morning, including a specialty team to battle a large wildfire burning deep in the woods. the so-called covered bridge fire was first spotted saturday afternoon in albany and has now the saco river. flames could be seen from miles away, and crews are battling steep terrain, forcing them to call off efforts overnight. this is just one of several brush fires that burned over the weekend. >> what is unusual is that the fires will still burn deeper because we haven't had any substantial rain, so the ground is still pretty dry. erin: it's unclear how the fire in the white mountains started, but officials say it will likely take several days to get it

and for now the covered bridge parking area and the boulder loop trail are closed because of the fire. sean: a lawsuit against phillips exeter academy in concord is set to go to trial in federal court today. the mother of a former student alleges that the school wrongfully kicked her 15-year-old son out after he had sex with another 15-year-old student. the lawsuit claims the school initially said the boy would be placed on leave but then changed its mind. according to court documents, according to court documents, school officials believe the the teen is not facing any criminal charges. a strafford man accused of trying to kill another man last year is set to stand trial this morning. kevin hinrichsen is charged with attempted murder and first degree assault. police say he stabbed a 21-year-old man during an altercation in april of 2015 at a park and ride in northwood. the two men did know each other. and a man accused of leaving his 2-year-old child in his car

officers say they stopped 36-year-old anthony miele on friday for traffic violations but then learned there was a warrant for his arrest in epping. they say that's when he ran. police finally used a taser to subdue and arrest him, and the child is being cared for by family members. erin: president-elect donald trump is starting to put together his white house team, naming rnc chairman reince priebus as his chief of staff. the president-elect also says he to three million undocumented immigrants but is calling on americans to not be afraid of his presidency. abc's janai norman reports from washington. janai: the future of the government is taking shape. president-elect trump announcing chairman of the republican party, reince priebus, will be chief of staff. mr. trump: let's hear it, drain the swamp.

erin: strong aftershocks continue to rattle new zealand this morning after a powerful magnitude 7.8 quake struck the south island yesterday. two people are dead, and there one government official calls it utter devastation. however, it is far less than that caused by another earthquake in the area 5 years ago. officials say it will likely cost billions of dollars and take months to clear debris and make repairs with one town completely cut off right now. the quake is also causing problems for animals. these three cows were spotted stranded on a small island of grass with all the ground around

their vehicles didn't have enough rust protection. the settlement covers 1.5 million vehicles dating as far back as 2005. erin: dozens of people carved up the snow at bretton woods yesterday to help fight hunger in new hampshire. the resort offered free lift tickets to skiers and boarders who brought a non-perishable food item to donate. the campaign was called say goodnight to hunger and judging by this picture, it was a great success. bretton woods hopes to open for the season closer to thanksgiving. a ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for today to celebrate a huge expansion at the jackson ski touring center. the half a million dollar expansion adds 4 new trails totaling nearly four miles and 8 new bridges. the cross country ski center hopes to open in about a month. kevin: we just made a little bit of snow out there. if you have been outside this morning or late last night, you probably noticed that the moon is especially big and bright. it is called a supermoon, and it

thicken tuesday morning. not much shower activity before 11:00 a.m. in the afternoon, these showers make their way in and by lunchtime we have some showers moving in. and in time for the evening commute, shower activity continuing through early wednesday morning. a lot of that will be lighter showers. that will leave us with a lot of clouds wednesday before the breakup late wednesday night and into thursday sunshine for the end of the week. we could be talking about a quarter of an inch of rain to two thirds of an inch of rain out of the system. a brief downpour is a possibility tomorrow or tomorrow evening. the next system located off to the west does not arrive until the weekend. temperatures starting in the 20's and 30's. getting into the 60's for most this afternoon. temperatures start to slip back after that.

sean: right now lebanon police are on the lookout for a man they say attacked a woman while she was walking on a trail. erin: the attack happened around 5:40 last night on a trail off loop road near dartmouth hitchcock medical center. ray brewer joins us live in lebanon now, and ray, can you tell us how that woman is doing this morning? ray: police are telling us that the woman suffered only mor attention. now police are trying to track down the man who attacked her. police also say this attack victim appears to have been chosen at random. it was around 5:40 last night when the 23-year-old woman was attacked while walking on a trail near dartmouth hitchcock medical center. she said a man came up behind her, threw her to the ground and physically assaulted her. the woman fought back, and the attacker eventually ran off, fleeing down the trail toward the parking lot. he was driving a darker-colored

the attacker is described as a white man between 18 and 25 years old, about six feet tall with shaggy, dirty blond hair. anyone who may have been in the area during the time of this attack is asked to contact the lebanon police department. reporting live, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: thanks. crews are heading back to albany this morning to continue battling a major brush fire. today a specially trained fire team will focus on containing the fire, which is burning deep into the white mountain national the fire was spotted saturday afternoon, and it has already scorched more than a hundred acres. it started near a bridge and is now being called the covered bridge fire. at this time there is no word on what may have caused it. the forest service expects the fire will be fully out later this week. erin: new on daybreak, fire officials in weare are investigating a pair of fires that broke out within 24-hours of each other. the most recent fire started shortly after 11:00 last night

when crews arrived, they say there were heavy flames coming from the building. the house and everything inside it was destroyed. officials say the home was vacant at the time and no one was hurt. several hours earlier, crews were called to a fire at a home on mount dearborn road. the flames broke out around 1:00 a.m., and the homeowner was asleep at the time. fortunately, the homeowner was able to escape unharmed, but the house was destroyed. sean: fish and game officials say a massachusetts man died while hiking with a boy scout troop in bean'pu norton suffered a medical emergency while he and his group were coming down the 19 mile brook trail on sunday. they had just left the amc's carter hut. a national guard helicopter went to the scene, but norton passed away despite efforts to revive him. erin: hudson police are warning people to be on the lookout for sick animals. they say they've seen a 44% increase in sick wildlife calls this year and have responded to

the majority of those calls involved foxes, and officers believe the animals may have distemper. they say wild animals with distemper appear to be tame, but they want pet owners to be aware that the deadly virus can easily be spread to cats or dogs through ticks. >> make sure their shots are up to date. check them for ticks. the last fox we had was covered in ticks. that is one way is erin: so far there are no reports of any sick animals acting aggressively. hudson police are asking anyone who sees a wild animal stumbling around or acting lethargic to give them a call. sean: the fish and game department is encouraging the public to help report wildlife crime. officials say anyone who is aware of crimes like poaching, trespassing, littering, or theft can call operation game thief. calls are also encouraged for things like shooting an animal out of season or hunting without a license. operation game thief has a

the number is 1-800-344-4262. it is confidential, and rewards may be paid for tips that lead to an arrest. erin: newly elected members of the new hampshire house can begin filing legislation today. often times more than 500 bills are filed each year. every measure gets a hearing and a full vote on the floor. returning lawmakers have already started submitting bills. among them are proposals to raise the minimum wage and expand gun background checks. in january. sean: the donald trump transition continues. the president-elect is naming his first key appointments, and he's also opening up about the kind of leader he'll be in his first post-election interview. nikole killion is in washington this morning to tell us what the president-elect will be doing today. nikole: today, president-elect donald trump spoke with china's president, who congratulated mr. trump and called for cooperation

kevin: clear skies, light winds as we start off your monday morning. a good deal of sunshine. a light breeze out of the southwesterly direction. that pushes us up into the 50's and lower 60's this afternoon. clouds will approach later tonight. that means showers tomorrow. details ahead. sean: a florida man charged in connection with a deadly shooting in massachusetts is due in court in south carolina today. with accessory to murder and armed robbery in connection with the death of 35-year-old daniel smith. two boys found smith shot in the woods in easton, massachusetts, last week. he died at the hospital on friday. right now noguera is being held in south carolina as a fugitive from justice pending extradition to massachusetts. sean: police in philadelphia are on the lookout for the suspects involved in what they call a flash mob attack. investigators say at least four

one of the victims was an off-duty police detective who suffered a fractured eye socket when he tried to intervene in an attack. police were able to arrest two 16-year-old suspects on assault charges. erin: the company that makes splenda is now suing dunkin' donuts. the lawsuit comes after dunkin' donuts cut ties with the sugar substitute this year. the suit claims that the chain now offers a chinese-made off-brand in yellow packets like splenda. the company says it sent investigators into more than 70 dunkin' donuts restaurants and found that some employees falsely indicated that splenda was used in its products. the company says dunkin' donut'' actions are damaging splenda's reputation, and it now wants compensation. this week marks national hunger and homelessness awareness week. and this morning, we are taking a look at the states where the most people go hungry. according to a new report from

biggest problem when it comes to hunger, followed by arkansas and louisiana. maine was listed as the ninth state where the most people go hungry. sean: turning now to sports. the patriots put their 7-1 record on the line last night against one of the best teams in the nfc, the seattle seahawks. this was a rematch of the 2014 super bowl, which, of course, the patriots won. if i rem were down 19-14 when legarrette blount took it in for his third touchdown of the game, making it 21-19 new england. in the 4th, the seahawks took the lead after russell wilson made his third touchdown pass of the game. the patriots had a chance in the final seconds, 4th and goal, but tom brady could not connect with rob gronkowski. seattle ended up winning 31-24. the patriots fall to 7-2. >> we just gotta do a better job.

got to do better. sean: next up, the patriots play the san francisco 49ers this sunday. erin: the bruins were after their third straight win last night skating in colorado, first period david krejci fired one to the far post. his second goal of the season put boston in front 1-0. in the final minute of the game dominic moore threw on in the , empty net from center ice and the bruins went on to win it 2-0. tuukka rask made 21 saves for e the bruins will be in minnesota on thursday. sean: to the racetrack we go. the final two spots in the final four were up for grabs in phoenix yesterday. matt kenseth was trying to keep position on the restart, when he came down the track into the 88, and spun into the wall, ending his shot at advancing to the final round. joey logano took the lead on the second attempt at a green, white, checker finish, and held on for the win. this one automatically qualifies

enough to get him into the final, so it will be jimmie johnson, carl edwards joey logano, and kyle busch, racing for the sprint cup championship in the season's final race, next weekend at homestead. erin: an interesting competition was held last week to determine who is the fastest gravedigger in central europe. ten teams from slovakia, poland, and hungary competed in the event. the teams were judged on both speed and accuracy. each grave had to be dug to five feet deep, six and a half feet long, and three feet wide. no modern tools were allowed, only shovels and picks. the winning time was 54 minutes. sean: that is a lot of work to do that. erin: those exact specifications. a student in the u.k. has developed what's claimed to be the world's first robot lawyer. sean: joshua browder created the robot after receiving several

inspiration. the robot, which takes the form of the website chatbot, asks a series of questions before generating an appeal. it can even use google street view to include a picture of where the ticket was issued. >> once it knows the legal issue, it then takes down details and then places these details into a legally-sound appeal, which can be sent directly to the local authorities. erin: joshua says that within nine months of creating the robot lawyer more than 180,000 sean: hmm. mcdonald's offering a special treat to nutella fans. take a look at this concoction. it's called the sweety con nutella burger. i just want to get one because i can call it that. the dessert features a brioche bun with a nutella center. right now the burger is only available in italy but there is a push on social media to expand it to other countries.

sean: three new jersey veterans had a run in with the boss over the weekend, but this had nothing to do with their jobs. take a close look right there. the men stopped to help a stranded motorcyclist. and it turns out that biker was the boss bruce springsteen.

bike, but when that didn't work, the men gave springsteen a ride to a local bar. that is where you need to go when your bike is broken. before he was picked up, springsteen paid for a round of drinks and promised the men some concert tickets. erin: how awesome is that? sean: born to run until your bike breaks down. erin: i guess so. [laughter] erin: a new business in pennsylvania is giving women the know-how to work on their cars and do it with style. it's called the girls auto clinic. the business looks like your inside there's also a salon. kevin: that is interesting. the shop, which employs five female mechanics, will not only repair cars, but also show women how to do it themselves. and if they happen to break a nail, they do not have to go far to get a manicure.
