hayley: now at 5:00, cold and brisk as colder air settles in right now. and there's a few snow and rain showers continuing to fall. how chilly it will be for thanksgiving week. adam: plus, police have identified the man killed in the tilton head-on collision. what investigators believe led to the fatal crash that shutdown a major road for hours. cherise: then nearly 400 blood samples now undergoing pfoa testing. when the results could be in. adam: and a new hampshire dog struts his stuff on the national stage. how his this pooch is dealing -- soaking up the spotlight.

adam: rain and snow showers in new hampshire tonight as the winter blast that hammered areas out west moves east. light snow is expected to continue in parts of the granite state tonight. good evening. i'm adam sexton. cherise: and i'm cherise leclerc. cold temperatures and more wet weather will move through this week. meteorologist hayley lapoint is tracking all of the developments for the holiday week ahead. hayley: ground right now. in higher terrain, you know about this. the roads were slick today in some spots with cars off the road reported. what is going on is we have a low-pressure system twisting and turning on top of us. that means much colder air to the west. on the eastern side of the state, it is relatively mild. that is why there are showers

snow flying. don't be surprised this evening even in southern new hampshire into nashua, you could see a few flurries flying. in the upper valley, not much on radar. sometimes the radar is blocked in this area so i would not be surprised if the snow is ongoing from the new london area into the lebanon areas with light accumulation expected. this low-pressure system continuously rotating th 30's now and will continue to plummet overnight. in terms of snowfall accumulations, the higher amount will be in the western and northern halves of the state with a few inches expected especially in the higher terrain. i will show you exactly what we are looking at for the thanksgiving holiday and the days leading up to it. adam: thank you. new hampshire department of transportation has been treating roads and reduced speeds due to

gotten two to three inches of snow but there have not been serious accidents. cherise: we are learning more about it during what -- about a deadly crash in tilton that shutdown a busy road for hours. police are identifying the victim and wmur's siobhan lopez is live in tilton with the latest on the investigation. reporter: one person was killed, the other driver seriously injured. after believe they now what caused the crash. according to police, the driver killed is identified as 29-year-old robert arteaga of northfield. he was driving east up the hill when he allegedly crossed the double yellow line, hitting another driver head on. it happened right in front the greenside restaurant. people who work there tell us they heard the crash and ran out to offer any help they could. they say a nurse and a volunteer firefighter got out of their

small enough community where a lot of people are either part of the fire department maybe an , on-call responder and one of the nurses that did respond was a local nurse. reporter: the driver of the other vehicle is a 51-year-old woman from belmont. she remains in the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. we spoke to arteaga's fa off-camera. they tell us they are in shock over the loss. they tell us robert was a new father and their hearts go out to the other family affected by this crash. live in tilton, siobhan lopez, wmur news 9. adam: thank you. state health officials anticipate pfc blood testing results to be coming back in the weeks ahead. those living in pfoa contaminated areas like litchfield are eager for that information, but the state epidemiologist says they still won't be able to determine the

in litchfield, the work continues to bring public water to hundreds of homes with wells contaminated by pfo eia from the nearby saint-gobain performance plastics plant. >> they've been doing a good job, doing their best to keep traffic flowing. adam: at the linehan household on woodland drive, they're and, from the state, the results of pfc blood tests submitted in but they're not overly august. concerned. >> it's just my wife and i now. it's not like we've got little kids where we're really that worried about it. adam: health and human services says since the beginning of the year, they've received about 400 blood samples from people who may have been exposed to pfc's in southern new hampshire, and at the pease tradeport. >> there has been testing done in other populations, there's been testing that's been performed on a national level by the cdc, so we can compare people's blood levels and levels seen in the community to these

of exposure. adam: but state epidemiologist dr. benjamin chan says even after the results come in no one , will be able to say for sure what an elevated pfc level means. >> it's very difficult to look at blood levels and tell people what their risk of a health impact may be. adam: leo linehan says everyone in his family is in good health after more than 40 years on the same well. and he's satisfied with the handling of the pfoa crisis so far. >> havine value of the property goes up; we'll have fire hydrants, so we're very happy with that. adam: hhs is also in the process of conducting a community exposure assessment in the town of merrimack. because most of merrimack is on a public water system the state , is choosing 200 people at random to test.

his first conversation since the election with russian president vladimir putin. the white house says they spoke for about four minutes at an economic summit in peru today. the president is said to have discussed syria and ukraine during the brief conversation. adam: right now, a manhunt is underway in san antonio texas after an officer was shot and killed while writing a traffic ticket outside police headquarters. investigators say the suspected gunman pulled up behind the to the officer's driver-side window shooting him in the head. the officer was a 20-year veteran of the police force. wrecks this is everyone's worst nightmare. you never want to see anything like this happen. unfortunately, like dallas and baton rouge, it has happened here. adam: local departments are showing their support. nashua police tweeting another tragic loss for our country,

cherise: the national dog show presented by purina has become a thanksgiving tradition across the country, but it's not too often one of the participants is from the granite state. joining us live is hellion's ronin samurai, a miniature bull terrier, and his owners, kathy

it is so great to have you guys. congratulations. what a huge honor. you just got back. many may think this is live on thanksgiving, it is actually taped. tell me about the experience. he went yesterday to philadelphia. >> yes, we showed and went through all the things that happen at a dog show. they placed the dogs and everything will be aired on thanksgiving day right after the macy's parade. cherise: you are from nottingham, new hampshire. tell me about the kennel and this cool guy. he is adorable. >> i have a kennel, but it is not really a kennel. all of the dogs live in my house. i have runs so they get exercise. everybody lives in the house. i have been breeding terriers since 1992 when they were

they are a great therapy dog. they like to do the show because they like to be the center of attention. yesterday was a bench show which means the dogs had to stay in a particular area where they are crated all day long. people get to come and meet all of the different kinds of it is great fun for the dogs. you are tired by the end of the day. 5:00 seems to come very late in the day. but the participants, the people that come to visit, love it. lots of little kids. ronin had a great time with the little kids and was great at washing their hands.

temperature profile across the state. it depends on your location because of the low pressure system. on the eastern half of the state, we still have rain showers. that includes the mount washington valley. in central and southern new hampshire, it is colder because of the counterclockwise motion of the low-pressure system and the colder air getting dragged down behind it. especially in the higher elevations of the white mountains into berlin. still rain showers along the route 16 corridor. all of the rain has turned to white even in southern new hampshire. if you are looking out the window from manchester into salem, you might see flurries. not expecting anything to accumulate in these areas because the ground is too warm. because the ground is too warm. that is not the case in the

ongoing, especially north of jaffrey and the higher elevations. there have been a couple of inches that have already fallen and accumulated. low-pressure continues to pinwheel on top of us. behind it, the cold northwest air. today, temperatures plummeted through the afternoon. we are all in the 30's at the moment. of the state because of the low-pressure. overnight, temperatures will fall in the 20's north, low 30's concord and salem. most of us should fall below freezing overnight. any rain left over will change to snow. there will be continued snow showers, especially along these higher elevations east of the upper valley and in northern new

the ocean. tomorrow, it will be an elevation thing in the northern part of the state. southern areas might see sunshine. we will have snow shower action up north so the accumulation will grow in these areas throughout monday into tuesday. if you are traveling tuesday for the holiday, it looks great in central and southern new hampshire. northern areas, still ongoing snow happening. it is indicative of where your area is. in the higher elevations come you may get more than four inches. it totally depends on your elevation with this storm system. a trace to three inches from the lakes region into the monadnock region. only a few flurries from concord, manchester, and southward. tomorrow, temperatures will be very cool. 30's across the state.

state. that is where we have snow coming down. we have had reports of slow travels, particularly in the infield area and from new london to the lebanon areas along i-89. southern new hampshire, we have had reports of flurries in manchester and south. higher elevations is where we are seeing accumulating snow. southern new hampshire, maybe a few flurries not expected to accumulate on the ground. we are getting the cold air coming down out of the northwest and the warmer air on the eastern half is moving away. some of the coldest temperatures are on the western half of the state at 33 degrees in whitefield. 37 in laconia, 39 in concord and manchester. overnight, it will be chilly. most of us falling at least two freezing if not the 20's with snow showers continuing, particularly in the higher

of the week's forecast including when travel will be the best, coming up. adam: thank you. for the latest on the forecast, including an hour-by-hour analysis, go to wmur.com. you will find an interactive radar, extended forecast, and all the latest details on closures and delays. cherise: a timely warning from newton police. authorities are offering tips on how people can make sure that their packages aren't stolen this holiday season. police say they've already received reports of a grinch taking packages off of porches if you are unable to be home when a package is delivered, police advise leaving instructions for the delivery person, or having it sent to a neighbor if they're home, or your place of work. adam: tonight, six people are back on dry land after being rescued from a sinking boat. cherise: it happened just hours ago off the coast of massachusetts. rhondella richardson from our sister station wcvb has more on the daring rescue and the emergency call for help.

coast guard air station cape cod came out after the call for help. the boat was taking on water. >> they hit a rock and must have put a hold in the boat and were starting to take on water. reporter: drifting and sinking quickly five miles off of new bedford, the priority moved from salvage to rescue. five men and one woman were on board. >> about under the water. reporter: the captain says they had 5000 pounds of scallops. >> the captain seemed a little disorientated. i do not think he was hypothermic, but he did not seem normal. >> other than minor lacerations, they are all safe. >> they should not have been in that area. it must have been a navigational error.

choppy water and tough went. investigators decided to beach it as close to shore as possible and try to pump it out. the crew at a local hotel declined comment. >> they wanted to get back to land. everybody was somber on the boat. reporter: the captain and crew were from north carolina and virginia. they tell me they just need hot showers and warm clothing. tonight as the father of a soldier from california killed in afghanistan says he was booed on an airplane. sergeant john perry was killed in afghanistan by a suicide bomber on november 12. on the flight to meet his remains, perry's father, stewart , says the family was booed after they were let off the plane before first class passengers. news 9 spoke with natalie healy, a gold star mother from exeter. she says surprisingly, many people might not know what a

americans are expected to travel this thanksgiving. when it comes to driving, not all the days are created equal. according to waze, the roads should not be that hectic on thanksgiving, black friday, or saturday. if you are planning to leave on sunday, you might want to rethink that strategy. wednesday will see a 20% increase in traffic jams. to increase by 240%. cherise: during the holiday, top skiers from around the world will be in new england. the skiing world cup will be held in vermont. it is the east coast's largest ski area that started making snow last month. the last time a world cup event was held in the northeast was in the early 1990's. there is still time to register

classes in kingston. two separate classes are being held the first weekend of december at the kingston community center. snow mobile enthusiasts 12 and older must have a safety certificate or a valid license to operate a snowmobile in the granite state. a safety certificate will be issued upon successful completion. for a quick look at the outdoor forecast, let's check in with meteorologist hayley lapoint. hayley: tomorrow, we will start out on the chilly side with temperatures in the 20's and 30's. winter bus stop tomorrow morning. we will slowly try to warm up into the mid and upper 30's later in the afternoon. we will have some sunshine in central and southern new hampshire. up north and in the mountains, cloudy with more snow showers and accumulation going on. chilly and breezy with temperatures in the mid-30's by the afternoon. i will show you more on the extended forecast, including thanksgiving day, coming up in a few minutes. adam: thank you.

>> now, meteorologist hayley lapoint and your stormwatch 9 forecast. hayley: good evening. we do have some snow showers across parts of the state. it is mainly in the higher elevations. there might be accumulating on the ground. in derry, showers. there have been flakes spotted but they will not accumulate because of the ground being warm. the winds out of the southwest at 15 miles per hour. we have a low-pressure system planted just off toward the south and east of us. you see this twisting and turning motion continuing right now. on the eastern half of the state, it is warmer than the

orientation of the low-pressure system and the winds around it coming down out of the northwest. there are some snow showers. they have been ongoing, particularly in the higher elevations. a few inches have accumulated in the higher elevations. even jaffrey, there have been reports of snow accumulating on grassy surfaces and rooftops. manchester and south. even where there is green indicating rain, i would not be surprised if there are flurries starting to mix in. this is the latest wide view. there is a lot of snow coming most of this is lake-effect snow because of the direction of the wind going over the warm lake water. the interaction of the cold air over the warm water is what makes the lake effect snow

york, they could be talking over one foot of snow from the system moving through. we will not see anything like that but there will be additional accumulation in the higher elevations overnight tonight and tomorrow. temperatures in the 30's across the state now. they have fallen dramatically. if you were shopping today and stepped outside, it was cold, especially with the winds picking showers. even in southern new hampshire, they are possible but no accumulation. accumulation would happen in the higher elevations, in the foothills in the western and northern halves of the state. tomorrow morning, snow showers continuing north. southern areas, probably sunshine. that will be the case throughout

sunshine south with snow showers north. the highest amounts will be in the higher elevations. maybe as much as six inches in some locations in the northern tier of the state on the higher summits. it will be brisk the next couple of days. only 39 for the high tomorrow. tuesday, we will get up to 41. mid 40's by wednesday. on thanksgiving, a mix of rain and snow showers. it does not look significantly heavy at this point. go for now. we will keep you up-to-date throughout the week. black friday should be good for shopping. temperatures in the low 40's. you will want to be inside. more showers on saturday possible. adam: you mentioned upstate new york. late november is always a wildcard.
