a road in durham has just reponened after a deadly accident, part of a series of crashes that are being blamed on slick roads. good afternoon. i'm sean mcdonald. temperatures were one or two degrees below freezing in some areas, causing icy roads and numerous spinouts. our live team coverage starts with ray brewer, who is live in durham with more on that deadly crash. ray: sean the fatal accident bridge behind me. the deputy chief says there's no doubt that road conditions were a factor. it was a taste of what is coming. overnight snow and colder , temperatures moved in to new hampshire, creating dangerous driving conditions. numerous spinouts were reported around the state, and while most accidents were minor, that was not the case in durham. >> it appears that the passenger

ice-covered. ray: deputy chief rene kelley says the call came in at 5:00 in the morning. >> the passenger car was traveling westbound, the tanker truck was traveling eastbound. ray: police say their investigation shows that car slid into the path of the tanker. >> the rear end of the car was sheared off and was located some distance from where the passenger car came to rest. ray: the only people involved were the drivers of the two vehicles. the driver of the car arrived on scene. >> the operator of the tanker truck was uninjured and he's been fully cooperative throughout the investigation so far. ray: far more typical of the accidents around the state monday morning was this one in epsom. the chain reaction collision involving three vehicles. the chief says route four was also icy. >> she said when she applied the brakes she was unable to stop

vehicle into the other vehicle. ray: while this was the only accident in epsom the chief says he could here of numerous others in the surrounding towns. and he wasn't really surprised by that. >> normally it takes a couple of snowstorms for people to learn how to drive again. ray: as you take a live look at 4, the road has reopened. the deputy chief says it is unlikely that any charges will be filed in connection with the accident. news 9. sean: traffic has eased in dover. this is video of the gridlock there this morning. it was the ripple effect of a section of the spaulding turnpike being shut down for hours due to another deadly crash. that road has since reopened. for a look at conditions now and what to expect for holiday travel, let's check in with

come any moisture on area roadways, we are looking at potential for things being better for the afternoon. the wind it will be an issue. areas of light snow in the north country. for essential and seven areas, -- essential and southern areas, there may be a few flurries. the winds making things much colder at the present time. a couple gusts at 20, 25 miles per hour. couple degrees above freezing in the mountains, it is the wind adding the extra chill to the air. from there we are going to continue to see gradual improvement on the wind and sky conditions over the next few days. what about the busy travel wednesday and thanksgiving? much more on that in a bit. sean: the first snow of the season has many people wondering what's in store for the upcoming winter. tonight in a special report, meteorologist josh judge looks

"the winter ahead" airs tonight, at 11:00. sean: right now crews are investigating a two-alarm fire that broke out in salem this morning. it happened at a house on zion hill road. firefighters from several communities were called to the scene. no word on injuries at this time. several londonderry em school students are recovering after their bus was hit by a truck this morning. police say some of the kids received a few bumps and bruises but they are expected to be ok. they were heading to matthew thornton elementary when authorities say a truck swerved into the bus to avoid hitting a car. the kids were then taken to londonderry high school, examined, and served milk and cookies. also new at noon, a manchester father is in custody, charged with endangering the welfare of his children. officers were called to 26-year-old james grenier's home

that he was harming himself. this is video of him being arraigned at this morning. police say when they entered his home, they found his two- and 4-year-old children in extremely unsanitary and unsafe conditions, with human and animal feces scattered throughout the home. officers say they found the 4-year-old in a harness covered in feces. the kids have been placed with their grandparents as dcyf investigates. happening now, a manhunt is underway in san to within the last hour authorities said "the uniform was the target." this is video just released of what is believed to be the suspect outside of police headquarters minutes before the shooting. abc's elizabeth hur has the latest developments. elizabeth: 4 officers in 4 cities ambushed from one of them murdered just outside police headquarters. >> of got an officer down in front of headquarters.

marconi was in his patrol car writing a traffic ticket when police say this car pulled up behind him, and then a man got out and shot the detective twice in the head through the passenger side window. >> we have been able to develop a suspect from the video surveillance. the suspect is described as a black male in his 20's, thin build, 5'8" to 5'10", with a goatee. elizabeth: meanwhile, in st. louis, another officer, a father of three, is in critical but stable condition after he was shot twice in the face, also while sitting in his patrol car. >> the officers that he saw the muzzle flashes and felt the glass breaking in the window as the shots struck him in the head. elizabeth: the alleged shooter in this case was later killed in a shootout with police. this morning, 2 more shootings

colder air continues to navigate northward, changing rainfall to snow last night. that is where we stand as we go through the noon hour in the north country, where the snow falls 22 degrees in pittsburg right now. in a complete winter scene it would look something like january. wolfeboro, four inches of snow. i will compact down some cash i will compact down some cash that will compact down som a few other areas, 3-4 inches of accumulation could southern areas of the state, a few breaks in the overcast. we continue to dry out but it doesn't mean we won't see a few more flurries and a snow shower in the afternoon. all in all, accumulation south of the white mountains is done. it will continue to go in the northern parts of the state from the white mountains to the great north woods.

expected to approach could this general swirl will slowly move its way up to the north and east. the effects will gradually diminished. we have the wind out there right now and that looks to stay in place for the time being. central and southern areas, there could be flurries through the afternoon. the north country, on the other hand, a different story come with a few additional inches of accumulation possibility in the next dayso up north, 22 in pittsburgh. we are in the mid-30's in southeastern areas come which helps area roadways. the winds will dry out the roadways. a much better evening commute for most, although you want to hang onto the steering wheel. gusting at times over 25 miles an hour. this wind will remain very noticeable tonight and brisk, as the temperatures will slide back

tomorrow, back into the 30's. notice temperatures continuing to cool off. yesterday we were in the 30's to upper 40's and then the temperature started to cool off from the southwest of the northeast. you can see that playing out here. gradual fade taveras guys -- to fairer skies. plenty of cold air to go. the air mass we had in place is not going anywhere anytime soon. seven-a forecast as you are going to see with the highs and the lows over the next five to seven days. scatter light snow up north. an additional few inches of accumulation tomorrow. a little more sunshine for southern areas but the wind adding extra bite to the air. it eventually sets of a great day of travel on wednesday. here comes the next area of clouds, and i think for thanksgiving we will have areas
