fukushima. jean: the tremors were so strong they could be felt as far away as tokyo. just five years ago an earthquake and tsunami hit japan, devastating the area killing nearly 19,000 people. right now there is no tsunami threat in the western u.s. states, including hawaii. and here in new hampshire we are watching the sky after snow started off the holiday week. josh: the entire state was blanketed with snow and it is still falling in the northern parts of t to mike haddad for more on this blast of winter. mike: yes. snow for just about all of new hampshire last night and this morning adding up to several inches especially in northern and central parts of the granite state. three inches of snow in franconia. east wakefield four and a half. pittsburg at five. bow an inch and a half. but that is nothing compared to the snow guns that have been blasting off the great lakes. take a look at new york state,

by 50 miles, over two feet of snow. lake placid a foot and a half or close to it. and still a lot of heavy snow in upstate new york all the way towards burlington, vermont in through the green mountains. also northern new hampshire still getting in on the action, we are lynn, through the white mountains, an additional one to three will fall between now and daybreak. we've got winter cold statewide right now. todas way back in april 4th when highs only reachedded the upper 20's. what about more snow chances over the next several days? we'll look at that, ahead. josh: right now for the most part traffic is moving smoothly. but the weather did result in a deadly day on the roads in new hampshire with two fatal accidents on the seacoast. wmur's jennifer crompton has more on what happened and joins us now live from portsmouth. reporter: the first storms of

much the dusting of snow as the perilous black ice that followed, suspected in those two fatal accidents in dover and durham. crews were with busy this morni, police responding to numerous crashes. a driver in epsom losing control on ice causing a three-car fender bender. but it was more serious on route 4 in durham where a 32-year-old dover man was killedded when police say he lost control on ic the lee line. his car crossed boo the path of an oncoming tanker truck. that driver was unhurt. in dover a 43-year-old somersworth woman was killed along route 16, icy conditions also suspected in that one. >> it went off the left side of the roadway, struck the guard rail and subsequently overturned. as a result, the driver was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the

how to drive again. you know. all of a sudden it's icy and that's what happens. reporter: according to the state department of transportation, crewing were out last night clearing the snowfall, but temperatures seemed to plumb ement between three and four in the morning, that's when reports started coming in about black ice. jennifer croto for the evening commute. we'll start with live pictures looking at i-93 in windham from our common man camera. josh: peggy james joinings us now with a live look at the road home to start the work week. >> good evening, josh and jean. significantly better this evening than it was this morning, in fact it's pretty quiet out there on the roads. 93 northbound coming up over the state line, no issues issues frm into manchester, and things are moving well on 293 north and

conditions that these two children were living in. police say they were called to an apartment on kuirin street to check on the condition of james grenier. when they arrived they found aan apartment littered with trash, human and animal feces, flies and other insects. a 2-year-old girl was naked in her feces covered crib, shivering, covered in waste and urine. police say the 4-year-old boy was in similar conditions, strapped to the top of h bed. >> the other one was actually harnessed in a jury rigged sort of harness to a bed. the bed was described in the complaint, it was terrible. reporter: grenier face these charges that include endangering the welfare of a child. the two children were turned over to family members. andy hershberger, wmur news 9. jean: thanks, andy. tonight a wakefield man is facing several child pornography possession charges.

investigation. reporter: police say the 18-year-old man from wakefield recently was in court facing charges of possessing child pornography. following a lengthy investigation, wakefield police say they arrested charles turcotte last week, he was arraigned in the ossipee district court last friday and faces 10 class a felony charges of possession of child pornography. the state's criminal code says if convicted each count could carry turcotte was released on $25,000 personal recognizance bail. the 18-year-old is scheduled to be back in court for a hearing on december 15. suzanne roantree, wmur news 9. josh: commitment 2016 coverage now. by tomorrow the 2016 election in new hampshire is expected to officially come to a close. that's when the secretary of state's office hopes to finish its recounts in several state

reviewing the ballots in 14 house races and one senate race. so far the outcomes are unchanged. a familiar face in new hampshire may soon be an important part of the donald trump administration. today former massachusetts senator scott brown met with president elect donald trump about the possibility of becoming the secretary of veterans affairs. we spoke with brown by phone, he said it was he said he told the president-elect that he is the best man for the job but no matter the outcome is a great honored to be considered. aixa diaz is live in washington now with the other familiar faces trump is meeting with today. reporter: josh, there's only been one cabinet announcement so far. jeff sessions for attorney general. but trump's team says everyone is equally as important, that the cabinet is -- even though there's only been one announcement so far, they say they're ahead of schedule

news it of japan, thousands are being urged to evacuate due to a tsunami. officials say it could hit the coast of fukushima at any moment. jean: it's just after 6:00 a.m. in japan right now. a 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck within the past hour. right now there is no tsunami warning for western u.s. states, including hawaii. josh: pope francis says he was extended priests ability to abortions. that change was only allowed during the catholic church's year of mercy which ended yesterday. the pope says there's no sin that god can't reach. jean: officials say a plot has been in the works for months but didn't say what the target would have been. investigators are still trying to figure out if this plan was part of a larger one to attack several sites at one time.

alert after four officers were ambushed in three states within 24 hours. one of them gunned down in broad daylight and right now a manhunt is under way for the killer, as elizabeth hur tells us, this surveillance from police headquarters is key to identifying the suspect. >> it's disgusting. >> it's not justified. reporter: dismayed and disheartened. >> just sort of punch me in my stomach. reporter: community members in san antonio are dropping flowers and thank you neat for detective benjamin marconi, shot and killed outside police headquarters for just doing his job. >> absolutely targeted. i feel we were targeted. i think the uniform was the target. reporter: according to the san antonio police chief, this is their suspect, caught on surveillance video at the police station sunday morning. >> you ask the question, --

hitting marconi, sitting in his patrol car, twice in the head before driving away. >> the vehicle drove through headquarters. reporter: marconi is one of four officers ambushed this weekend. in st. louis another officer while sitting in his squad car was shot twice in the face. in florida and in missouri, two more officers were shot and wounded during a traffic stop. all three are now home recovering. back in san antonio, a community continues to mou know they are not alone. >> everybody's life matters. so that's why i thought i'd come and show appreciation. reporter: in a statement the marconi family says they are mourning the loss of a wonderful father and a peace officer, and thanked the community and the country for the outpouring of support. elizabeth hur, abc news, new york. josh: one boston police officer who was wounded in a shooting is

leg in october. the boston police commissioner says immediate first aid from fellow officers saved morris' life. jean: six keene state college students will spend their thanksgiving break protesting the access pipeline project in north dakota. they raised money on a gofundme page and are planning to leave tomorrow. today demonstrators have been clashing with police by attempting to pass a blocked off bridge near their camp. hours ago, pol s forced to use tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannons to keep the protesters back. josh: new at 5:00, workers at chicago's o'hare airport will not be going on strike until after thanksgiving. union reps announced today that a walkout will be delayed until november 29, that is a week from tomorrow. baggage handlers, cabin cleaners and certain other workers want $15 an hour as well as union rights. they are getting advice from the

mike: big pattern change over the last 24 hours. we started yesterday relatively mild with temperatures well above the average during the morning hours. then all of a sudden that chill started to enter the region and it's still out there right now. as you might expect, another wintery place is atop mount washington. look at the time lapse photos, in and out of the clouds and snow today, and yes there is more to come. how about those temperatures, only 36 the 10 below the average for a change. your low this morning, really not all that cold, a little bit above average. but it's that daytime temperature that really didn't go anywhere and was rocking about 10 degrees below the average and colder than we've been since last april 4th. take a look at the snow still flying in parts of new hampshire. especially upstate new york. classic lake effect guns blasting out here with a warm

and lake erie. and that means snow continues as long as the winds crank up and they'll continue right through tomorrow. so additional foot, foot and a half of snow in spots that received close to two feet in central and western new york. what about new hampshire, could be a couple more flurries in southern new hampshire. but most of it will fall between now and wednesday morning. another 24 to 36 hours of it, will be in the great north woods through the heart of the white mountains. where we could see an additional one to two inches in the valleys and two to five inches in the higher terrain. but again the heaviest continues to our west, and eventually that are shut down later tomorrow night and early wednesday. the chill is out there statewide, three atop mount washington. 20's and 30's elsewhere. with busy winds making it feel colder. right now with the wind and temperature it feels below freezing statewide, 20's to

washington a.27 below zero. what about air temperatures, we're not going to drop off that much. that same wind is driving in this cold air out. eastern canada and it latest be with us at least for the next several days. so temperatures may climb two or three degrees tomorrow and maybe another two or three with full sun on wednesday. but the next system rolls in just in time for thanksgiving. that will be a weak one and mixed showers. for tonight into tomorrow, notice how most of the snow is in northern parts of the state, fair amount of partial sun in southern new hampshire and will be windy statewide. any snow showers en by early wednesday morning. back to full sun. winds begin to shut down and as far as snow, yeah, a lot more to fall, especially in the hyper terrain up north. three to six in the mountains, and one to three in the valleys on average. take a look at thanksgiving day, not a whole lot there.

couple of flurries in southern zones. right now, big swirl in the atmosphere and basically what that means is cold air and yes cold air working over relatively warm warts of the great lakes, kicking off heavy lake effect snows to our west. but they tend to weaken as they approach new hampshire. instead we get the wind flowing up over the mountains, wringing out available moisture and that's kicking off the snow right now in northern and central locales. through manchester, over to the coast, clouds, even some breaks out there, chance of a few flurries, most of the steady snow tonight will be in the great north woods and heart of the white mountains, but the next hour or two stretch through parts of the lakes region and around laconia, and barnstead and loudon, wolfeboro and ossipee, could see an additional coating of snow. with temperatures out or below freezing, that means slick road

towards the thanksgiving holiday and beyond? into black friday and the weekend, we'll look at all of that straight ahead. josh: thanks. a lot people are thrilled to see the holiday week start off with snow. a viewer in colebrook sent us this picture. jean: tonight the gates have been lifted in the neighborhoods near a manchester wal-mart. this comes after months of heated debate and comnt wmur's siobhan lopez is live from one of those affected roads. reporter: traffic is flowing once again here on gold street, that's because this gate is being left up in the up position. city workers raised the gates around 3:30 this afternoon and removed all the signs that went with them. last week manchester aldermen were unanimous in their decision to lift all of the gates and restore two-way traffic to

essentially bringing traffic patters back to what they originally were. some residents had voiced frustration over the increased traffic on their streets and have been unhappy with the city solutions so far. >> we're finally trying to get our neighbor back to normal and and -- reporter: the city says they spent around $25,000 on these traffic patterns, some of these residents were unhappy with that. they say they maybe should have done some a new traffic pattern study is expected to be finished by the spring. josh: tonight the man arrested in the massachusetts hit-and-run of a 72-year-old woman says it was not intentional. 25-year-old arnold her nan dgz was arrested over the weekend and went before a judge today, he says he didn't even know he hit the victim. the woman was hospitalized and is expected to be okay. tonight the investigation is ongoing into a double fatal

and a 57-year-old lost their lives friday afternoon after a box truck rear ended their car and landed on top of it. they say the driver of the the box truck was delivering mail from new hampshire to portland. state police say the northbound lanes of the turnpike were closed for hours, but say it was incredibly important for them to take their time investigating. >> we can't give you an estimate on how long it's going to take to do a crash scene like that. that was a significant scene, and it takes tim those that had got tied up into it, but for us we were more concerned about doing the job and doing it correctly. josh: police say the crash report will be sent to the york county d.a.'s office for review. jean: a salem family won't be able to spend thanksgiving at home after a chimney fire this morning. firefighter say the flames were starting to spread into the attic of the house on zion hill road when they arrived. they opened the walls on the first and second floors of the home to put out the fire.

live there again. josh: never before has the president served in the oval office with a history of business deals that donald trump has. but it's now also raising questions about possible conflicts of interest. sally kidd is in our washington bureau with more. reporter: josh, federal conflict of interest law does not require that a president put his business holdings in a blind trust. but ethics experts say that's exactly what mr. trump should do. the trump organization's business luxury hotels, golf courses and hundreds of other entities, all owned by the next president of the united states. what about potential conflicts of interest. questions were raised thursday when the president-elect met with japan's prime minister. his daughter ivanka and her husband sat in on the meeting. mr. trump says management of his company and its portfolio of businesses will be transferred to his children. >> he's freeing up his time to

some time, not just for tonight, but for a good part of this week. although temperatures will slowly creep up just a little bit between now and the big travel day on wednesday. as for temperatures, yes, the cold does linger through this week. most of the snow from now through early wednesday morning will be in northern new hampshire, although early this evening a few snow showers making their way down as far south as the lakes region and down towards rochester, back through barnstead and a bright and cool travel day for wednesday, which is good news not only in new hampshire but all over the northeast. before the next system creeps in with with a few mixed or snow showers for thanksgiving. notice right now, most of the snow is flying back in upstate new york, they've already received one to two feet of snow out there. across northern new hampshire the jackpot has been in the

with three to as much as six inches, and still more snow flying berlin points south into the mount washington valley, down into the eastern part of the lakes region right now, where we could see another coating of snow. temperatures at or below freezing, that means slick conditions for the next few hours, so give yourselves some extra time if you're traveling through the evening. back to the west, heavier snow. notice this big swirl in the atmosphere, it extends back to our west and has to work through new hampshiret early wednesday. that means the clouds linger up north and snow showers persist while it latest be mainly dry in southern zones. speaking of south, look at temperatures even in southern new hampshire right near freezing, wind making it feel colder. only 20's to near 30 monadnock region, through the lake sunapee zone. lakes region mid to upper 20's to around 30. and very cold to the north, only near 20 in pittsburg and stewartstown at this hour, the

average. future temperatures will show a slow coast back below the 25-degree mark in some areas, and by early tomorrow morning that breeze still kicking up, so the wind chill as you head out tomorrow morning in the teens to around 20. fair skies are billion slowly from chicago through detroit, that is our weather for wednesday before that next system back to the west with a few mixed showers approaches for thanksgiving day. trickiest travel could be very sun is low in the sky. once it gets heighter around midday should be no major headaches, then a couple of mixed or snow showers thursday night. another round of showers in the form of rain or snow could work in late friday into saturday. could be a little tricky coastal storm that tries to set up shop very close to the new hampshire coast. so we'll have to watch out, sometimes it can back in and real deck some parts of new england with even rain or heavier snow, so we'll wait and

after what police call one of the most horrific discoveries they've ever made. tom: scott brown headed back to washington, what he's revealing tonight about a potential top spot in the trump administration. >> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now wmur news 9 at 6:00. tom: first at 6:00 tonight snow and black ice blamed for two deadly crashes with spinouts reported all across the state. good evening i vaughn. temperatures plunged overnight, causing crashes on nearly every major highway in new hampshire. we have team coverage that begins with chief meteorologist mike haddad who is still tracking some snow falling, in spots even right now. mike: that's right, snow in northern and central new hampshire, a couple of snow showers drifting into parts of southeastern new hampshire. but take a look at what fell earlier, and last night right through this morning, five
