inch and a half in bow. but big totals off to our west, this is classic lake snow to our west, between a foot and a half and two feet syracuse north and east. can you see the deep blues indicating the heavier snow. while in new hampshire it's lighter snow but still steady enough and with temperatures at or below freezing to result in a few slick spots around the great north woods through thent of the lakes region and nosing down towards rochester. so give yourself a few extra minutes if you're traveling up route 16 all the way into the lakes region and points north. do we see much change as we go through the week? all of that straight ahead. >> the snow-ice mix is being blamed for a number of crashes across the state. wmurs jennifer crompton is live in portsmouth tonight and sadly at least two of those accidents were deadly?

that was this morning, as emergency crews responded to all kinds of accident as cross the region. according to the state's department of transportation, as their road crews finished cleaning up the snow from overnight, those first calls between three and four started coming in. the temperature suddenly droppedded and the phones went crazy. just after 5:00 a.m. in durham, police are called to route 4 near the lee line where they believe a 32-year-old dover man the path of a tanker truck. >> it appears that the passenger car lost control on the bridge, which at the time was ice covered. they collided in the eastbound travel lane, and the operator of the passenger car was deceased when the officers arrived. reporter: just before that, a 43-year-old somersworth woman was killed in a single car accident on route 16 in dover, icy conditions also suspected.

rail and subsequently overturned. as a result the driver was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene. reporter: the spaulding turnpike was shut down for hours, traffic snarled in the heavy commute. part my so the surface could be treated. a spokesperson for the state's department of transportation says roads had been cleared overnight from the dusting of snow, but temperatures suddenly plummeted after 3:00 a.m., creating spots of black ice. this three-car spot. >> she said when she aflighted her brakes she was unable to stop, her car slid into the car in front which pushed the other vehicle in front of that vehicle. reporter: the d.o.t. says many of its road side signs now warn of black ice, a condition we'll likely see a lot more of as we head into the winter season. jennifer crompton, wmur news 9. tom: right now in manchester

found living in deplorable conditions. wmur's andy hershberger live in the newsroom with the horrific discovery inside that man's home. reporter: tom, police say the apartment was filled with human and animal waste. and two young children were forced to live among the garbage. >> just inhumane what these children were exposed to. reporter: police say the conditions inside this apartment were so horrific it shocked even the most seasoned law enforcement officers. human feces, dog feces, as well as the smell of urine, covered in old food, flies, and then the two bedrooms where the children were staying were in the exact condition as the rest of the house. reporter: james grenier, the father of these two children, ages 2 and 4, facings three charges that include endangering the welfare of a child. police say they were called to the apartment early monday morning to check on greniers condition. when they found the youngsters

appalling conditions. police describe the 2-year-old girl as naked, shivering in her crib, covered in feces and urine. they say conditions were similar for her 4-year-old brother who was strapped down in his filthy bed. >> the other one was harnessed in a jury rigged sort of harness to a bed. the bed was described in the complaint, it was terrible. reporter: the children were turned over to their grandparents and the protective services were notified. a neighbor says he lived next to grenier for a year and didn't really know him. >> never even seen the child. reporter: there were two. >> i didn't know he had kids, never seen them outside, nothing. reporter: grenier's bail was set at $10,000. i'm andy hershberger, wmur news 9. jennifer an arrest warrant issued today for a salem, new hampshire mother who suffered an apparent drug overdose, in a lawrence, massachusetts dollar

want's young gawrt frantically trying to wake her. mcgowan did not show up for a hearing last week. also a portsmouth woman being held without bail accused of selling methadone to a dover man who died. he was found unresponsive in his home back in may. at the time police said his death did not appear to be a crime, but today police selling methadone to lossberg which they say caused his death. tom: in february, governor elect sununu will present his proposed two-year state spending plan. the process of developing that plan already under way tonight. josh mcelveen reports budget writers say funding for state agencies will be based on what's best for the state. after 16 weeks of instruction, these recruits will soon hit the streets. and whether it's the use of

learn here has never been more -- >> it's vital that these officers receive as much training as possible. reporter: it all has to be done within the framework of a state budget. while training requests for the next two years remain level, many other agencies say they need more. >> a lot of people with a lot of ideas, that's what the hearings are about. but there's also not the money to pay for most of them. so a lot of it is like every year, it's going to be about josh: health and human services an southerns about 40% of state spending in new hampshire, and the agency is dealing with with a $50 million hole in this budget, let alone the next one. >> we have to live within our means, and we will as a state. but we also have to make sure that we control this growth in our medicaid program. josh: senate president morris is the architect of the budget. he has a bit of a warning for the states largest agency. >> barring us doing the federal

jennifer: new tonight, a federal court will not step in to stop a potential school bus driver strike in southern new hampshire. at least not yet. the timberlane and hampstead school districts had asked a judge to grant an injunction to stop a possible student bus drivers. following a telephone hearing with the judge friday night, the school districts have agreed to wait until another round of negotiations scheduled for tomorrow. drivers in belmont have approved a strike, while other dryers in the state say they may walk off the job, too. tom: former massachusetts senator scott brown at trump tower today. he's reportedly a top contender for secretary of veterans affairs. the former new hampshire senate candidate met with president-elect trump this

tonight across the state to ensure families in need have a thanksgiving meal. jennifer: holiday baskets are being prepared in nashua and manchester. wmur's kristen carosa shows us how students and seniors are making a difference this holiday season. >> can i help you? reporter: these bags are full of food ready for families who need a hand this holiday season. eve bag contains enough for a traditional turkey meal with fresh vegetables, turkey, things

organizations donate the food to the fair ground middle school in nashua, which is being packed up and handed out. >> each bag contains a little note that says we're happy to help your family, and we only hope that you keep yourselves safe and healthy and pay it forward to someone else in need. reporter: a group of five students helped pass out more than 100 holiday baskets, the same group of girls that help run the schools food pantry. >> makes me feel really good like i'm making a difference, because you never know who's need and how you can help them. reporter: in manchester, seniors living at hallsville court have been collecting thanksgiving meals to give to the less fortunate as well. >> the turkey, stuffing, all the way down to the dessert. everything in between that they need. reporter: darlene helped organize the food drive for the first time this year, the food boxes are being given to the salvation army on cedar street. >> we just wanted to give something back to the community

reporter: she says the meals will be given to three families chosen by the organization. >> this gives us the opportunity to provide some food and a special meal for, you know we can't service everybody, but we try to service as much as we can. reporter: in manchester and nashua, kristen carosa, wmur news 9. tom: you can check out these photos posted today on the ossipee police facebook page. on the right you can see snow, but on the left, which is on the ot flake. only in ossipee. one side of the mun taken versus the other, i guess that's the kind of morning it was. mike: will need about 10 to 15 aminutes to describe the scenario that set that up, so i think we'll pass on that one. but we will talk about more snow chances between now and thanksgiving. a couple of weak systems to talk about between now and then. but today, concord, 36 degrees, that's it, the coldest since way

months we have not been this cold. 10 off the high. and look at the low. it can get even colder, 4, the record low set back in 1873. the snow is still flying in northern and central parts of new hampshire. but the snow showers that are scooting down towards dover and durham and right towards portsmouth will tend to kick out to see quickly, and then more snow showers will fill in on and off through tonight and tomorrow, mainly in norn we'll see an additional accumulation of a dusting to an inch or two, and higher amountings in the higher terrain. back to our west, around syracuse, points south and west, one to as much as two feet plus due to heavy lake effect snows, that's the relatively warm waters with the cold air working over it, resulting in towering clouds and heavy bouts of snow. and they'll see more tonight into early tomorrow.

that are driving in much colder air, only 20's north, 30 the tupper valley. just at freezing in concord points south and southeast. any spot that is seeing snow now may see some slick roads through daybreak tomorrow. the winds have been active as well, out of the west. but eventually they'll turn to the northwest, driving in even cooler air by early tomorrow morning, so the wind chills are running in the teens and 20's. and by early tomorrow morning a lot of cold air has taken over. remember last week, and for that matter a good part of the early to mid fall, we were in the mild zone with temperatures in the 40's and 50's. instead the cold air is draining in out of eastern canada and will continue for the next several days. but once we get to wednesday, especially by afternoon, early part of the evening, the win will go lighter and fair skies continue to move in.

tomorrow snow showers up north, breaks of sunshine central, and a little more sun in southern new hampshire. as for thanksgiving day, after that dry travel day, everywhere in new england will see this system marching in with a couple of milked or snow showers. it shouldn't be a big storm, but just a couple of showers with temperatures at or below freezing early and maybe late could result in a few slick spots across parts of new hampshire. tonight and tomorrow, snow up north, dry elsewhere, windy for with a few more includes early wednesday before it dries out statewide. now we talk about snow, still flying up north, how much, an additional one to three in the valleys, three to six in the higher terrain and then we get to thursday where a few more showers of snow may move in, but really not looking like a big deal. but it could be just enough to glaze up a few roads early and again towards evening, before it dries out again early on friday. beyond that yet another system we'll track for friday evening

jamie: an 8:00 start for the celtics at the timberwolves. with the return of al horford to the lineup on saturday they'll be looking to keep the good times rolling. patriots handed chip kelly and the 49ers their ninth straight loss yesterday. zero turnovers, four touchdown passes for tom brady. the defense only gave total yards. but the patriots didn't seem to be the dominant force that they were earlier in the year. remember they were playing one of the worst teams in the nfl. but after the game the coach was pleased. >> i thought it was a solid effort by our team. it's always good to not turn the ball over. had some good field position opportunities. offensively. through the kicking game and some defensive stops and took advantage of those, made some big plays in the fourth quarter, we needed those.

coming up saturday, number 3 michigan at number 2 ohio state. they kick off at noon. you can watch that one live right here on channel 9. reaction from the u.n.h. football team, here it is yesterday. when they saw they made the fcs playoffs for the 13th year in a row, they seemed to be happy about it. and more good news, they'll host the first round game of the playoffs at the new wildcat stadium saturday at 2:00. but they'll be taking on a really good team. the patriot league champions from >> it a tough draw, lehigh, they struggled in their first two games and have won nine straight. they can play, and they're really good. i know the coach really well and he's a hell a coach. we're going to have our hands full. >> when they do take on lee he, u.n.h. will be going against troy pelletier, a wide receiver from deerfield. he played at manchester central high school and is pictured
