101 and 111 are also decent at this check. from the wzid traffic network, i am deb davidson. sean: thanksgiving is one of the busiest times of the year on the roads. in fact aaa is predicting that more than 43 million americans will travel for the holiday and they will enjoy falling gas prices. wmur's ray brewer is live in manchester this morning to explain what drivers can expec a little bit of good news. ray: a little bit of good news. roads will really start to get busy tomorrow afternoon the day before thanksgiving so make sure to plan ahead and allow extra time. but as you head out on the roads, there is good news. gas prices are falling. gas prices have been slowly trending down over the last few weeks. according to aaa we are now paying an average of $2.14 in

that is about a nickel lower than a month ago and is making travel for the holidays a little easier. >> you feel like you're filling your car up every couple of days or something like that when you're really traveling and it can be quite a burden on me so. >> it's going to be the second cheapest gas for thanksgiving since 2008. ray: aaa says the number of people traveling for the holidays has been steadily rising in recent years, they expect this to be the second busiest thanksgiving week on the roads in the past decade. and remember sunday afternoon will likely be very busy as everyone heads home. reporting live in manchester ray brewer wmur news 9. sean: new on daybreak police in pelham are warning of a possible bad batch of heroin in the area. investigators say they have seen a sudden increase in drug

including three in the span of 24 hours and at least two people have died in the last week and a half. police think the heroin that is circulating is likely mixed with synthetic drugs including fentanyl. a portsmouth woman is accused of selling methadone to a rollinsford teacher who died from the drugs. bryant lausberg was found unresponsive in his dover home back in may and later died at the hospital. police now say that 38-year-old amy matton sold methadone to lausberg several times. she is being held without bail and could face up to life in prison. the red cross is helping a dozen people including ten children after a fire in concord, just days before thanksgiving. firefighters were called to thompson street around 2:00 yesterday afternoon after a tenant came home and found fire inside. crews were able to contain the fire to the kitchen of one apartment. no one was hurt but it will be a few days before then can return. right now police in hudson are looking for the man they say

knifepoint last night. officers say a man wearing a mask entered the store on lowell road around 7:45 and got away with some cash from the register. police in derry need your help identifying this man they say he broke into the gilbert hood middle school early yesterday morning. officers found a broken window after alarms started going off around 3:00. they searched the building for about an hour but didn't find anyone. however a man was seen on rv around inside. it is not clear what if anything he may have taken. a school bus driver in tennessee is now charged with vehicular homicide after crashing his bus in chattanooga yesterday. leaving at least five elementary students dead. 35-students were on board when the bus overturned and slammed into a tree. federal investigators will arrive today. abc's stephanie ramos is

>> it is every parent's worst nightmare. >> hamilton county schools has confirmed there were 35 students on board that bus. all those students attend woodmore elementary and are in kindergarten-fifth grade. >> just a mile away from the chattanooga elementary school. a school bus. packed with kids ran off the road, crashed into the trees, ending up on its side. bloodied students lay on stretchers. >> multiple children lost their lives. >> oic right now investigators believe the bus was most likely traveling too fast. the 24-year-old bus driver was arrested and is now facing charges. >> johnthony walker is being charged with 5 counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving. >> it took rescue crews hours to get all the kids off the bus. 23 of them were sent to local hospitals. >> we're just asking for prayers.

families. >> schools will be open with grief counselors for those who need them. stephanie ramos, abc news, new york. sean: officials in japan are warning that another powerful earthquake is possible in the next few days. this comes after a strong quake hit off the coast of fukushima yesterday measuring between 6.9 and 7.4. experts say it was actually an aftershock of the massive 9 .0 quake that triggered a deadly tsunami in 2011. there was a tsunami nearly 5 feet high yesterday but damage was minimal and just 12 injuries have been reported. a manchester man is facing charges after police say they found his children living in deplorable conditions. officers went to an apartment on quirin street yesterday to check on james grenier. but when they arrived they say the apartment was littered with trash, animal and human feces, urine, flies and other insects. they say a two-year-old girl was found in a crib that was covered feces. and a 4-year-old boy was found in similar conditions, strapped

kevin: it is tuesday morning, november 22 where we start out with light snow in the north country. we are writing down colder air and keeping us chilly three -- chilly through the holiday weekend. sean: efforts are underway several local organizations donated food to the fairgrounds middle school in nashua, where students and staff are packing it up and handing it out. and in manchester, seniors living at hallsville court have also been collecting thanksgiving meals to give to the less fortunate. >> each bag contains a little note that says we are happy to help your family and we hope that you keep yourself safe and

someone else in need. cracks it makes it feel good. i'm making a difference. you never know who needs help. >> we wanted to give something back. and i feel like we are. sean: the thanksgiving boxes collected in manchester were given to the salvation army in the queen city. three people were honored last night after saving a man who collapsed at the epping walmart and stopped breathing. brian nelson collapsed last month. a bystander jumped in to help, just two weeks after completing a cpr course. the crowd and ran to help and took over cpr, until an epping police officer arrived with an aed and shocked nelson twice, bringing him back to life. >> it seems like my mother was up there already. putting everyone in their place for that perfect moment. otherwise, god knows. i probably wouldn't be here. sean: all three people who helped save nelson's life were recognized last night during a special ceremony at the epping

sean: new research shows that sean: new research shows that dementia rates in the u.s. michigan say about 9% of adults 65 years and older are dealing with alzheimer's or other dementias, down from 12% in 2000. however, scientists say the rising number of older americans may halt that downward trend unless more is done to keep brains healthy. the effort by massachusetts general hospital to take over wentworth douglass hospital in dover is getting a boost. the attorney general's office

the deal also requires the addition of eight full-time workers to provide mental health and substance abuse services. under the proposal, wentworth-douglass would keep its name and remain an independently licensed, not-for-profit hospital. manchester tech company dyn is getting new ownership. the company has been sold to oracle, which is based in california. dyn officials say they are committed to keeping the manchester office open and growing. terms of the deal have not been announced. the stock market continues to surge, reaching new record highs. all three major u.s. indexes closed at record highs yesterday, and the outlook for today is already up. the dow is now just 43 points shy of 19,000 and the value of the u.s. dollar is now the highest in 13 years. millions of americans will flood stores this friday for all the

sean: a couple in seattle has something extra special to be thankful for this thanksgiving. ray and mavis just celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary, they are both in their mid 90's now. they celebrated by having a party at the restaurant where they first met in 1943, when ray was stationed there during world war ii. kevin: he says the key to a long marriage is finding the right girl, while she says it is all about patience. sean: what did his days look like when she said it was about patience. patience and compromise. there are many ways to study history, but a man in north dakota has found a rather unique way. gregg halverson collects potato

>> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now, wmur news 9 daybreak. sean: good morning, it's tuesday, november 22. tomorrow is the big holiday. today, waking up to cold temperatures out there. kevin wil but first, our top stories. aaa says travelers will be seeing lower gas price as they hit the roads this thanksgiving. right now the average in new hampshire is $2.14 a gallon. a manchester woman is in the hospital this morning after suffering severe burns in a fire that broke out last night at a multi-family home on pine street. and a pet shop owner in portsmouth is asking for help after she says someone stole a chihuahua puppy from her store. more on that in a moment. very cold out there.

out what sparked a fire that left a woman severely burned. the fire broke out last night at a multi-family building on pine street. when firefighters arrived. they say they found an injured woman inside the building. >> made it the third floor and they found one victim. with severe burns. the victim right now has been transported to the hospital with severe burns. sean: at this time, there is no word on the woman's condition. th the red cross says it is now assisting four families that were displaced. a one-year-old child is recovering this morning after being burned by scalding coffee. the incident happened last night at a home on cedar street. firefighters say hot coffee was spilled on the child. the toddler was taken to the hospital with burns on 18% of the child's body. an arrest warrant has been issued for a salem mom, whose apparent drug overdose was caught on camera at a dollar

we want to warn you the video we are about to show is hard to watch. it shows mandy mcgowen's young daughter frantically trying to wake her in a store aisle. mcgowen did not show up for a court hearing on child endangerment charges last week. her daughter is now in state custody. a portsmouth pet store is asking for your help in tracking down a stolen puppy. the little shop of pets says this two-pound, three-month-old chihuahua was stolen this week. the owner believes the $900 puppy was taken out of an open pen sometime sunday night or monday morning. right now the biggest concern is that the little chihuahua is not getting the specialized food it needs. >> we don't know what it's on, and what is happening. it could easily crash and turn into sick puppy. we just want to get the puppy back. we not going to prosecute. please return the puppy before something drastic happens. sean: the pet shop owner says

will try to sell the puppy online to an unsuspecting buyer. the dog is micro-chipped, so any trip to the vet would raise red flags. as the threat of a school bus driver strike continues to loom a federal court now says it will not step in to help at least not yet. the timberlane and hampstead school districts asked a judge to grant an injunction to stop a possible strike by first student drivers. following a hearing with a judge on friday night the school districts agreed to wait until another round of negotiations scheduled for today. strike. if it happens others drivers in the state say they may also walk off the job. the gates have been lifted in neighborhoods near the manchester walmart. this comes after months of heated debate and complaints from residents. last week, manchester aldermen were unanimous in their decision to lift all of the gates and restore two way traffic to president road and mack avenue. a new traffic pattern study is expected to be completed by the

new hampshire's 2016 election is expected to officially come to a close today. the secretary of state's office hopes to finish its recounts in several state races. for days, officials have been reviewing the ballots in 14 house races and one senate race. so far the outcomes have remained unchanged, but the secretary of state will validate the results at the completion of the recounts. vermont senator bernie sanders returned to new hampshire to returned to new hampshire to promote his new book last night. in concord. the former presidential candidate spent about three months working on his book, called "our revolution, a future to believe in." it talks about his run for the white house and the future of our country. sanders says america needs to have discussions on serious issues. bernie sanders: you saw 1,000 times more coverage about emails or trump's attitude toward women, and i'm not saying that those are not important issues, but you know, climate change is

kevin: it is tuesday morning, temperatures are just below the freezing at milford this morning. clouds have been diving southeast. those clouds of north this morning are producing snow showers. we have an extra bite in the air. your holiday weekend is coming up. sean: we continue to follow a developing story out of japan. at least twelve people were

the tremor which measured between 6.9 and 7.4 struck in the same area that was devastated by a tsunami that followed a 9.0 earthquake back in 2011. the japan meteorological agency described this quake as an aftershock of the massive 2011 quake. it warned that another large earthquake could hit in the next few days. a massive pileup on a highway in china left 17 people dead and 37 56 vehicles were involved in the crash which happened during snow and rain. hospital officials say none of the survivors injuries are considered life-threatening. a texas woman is accused of murdering a woman in kansas and kidnapping her newborn baby. the suspect, yesenia sesmas, said in a jailhouse interview that the victim agreed to give her the child, but backed out of the deal at the last moment. she claims the murder was an accident. she says she threatened the

before the murder. the baby, whose name is sophia, was found safe. pope francis is extending his special permission for catholic priests to forgive abortions. he originally granted permission last year during the year of mercy which ended on sunday. in a letter pope francis wrote "i wish to restate as firmly as i can that abortion is a grave sin, since it puts an end to an innocent life. however, i can and must state that there is no sin that god's mercy cannot reach and wipe away." a college in amherst, massachusetts has stopped flying all american flags on campus, after one flag was burned following the presidential election at hampshire college. one college official says a flag was initially lowered to half staff after the election but it was then found burned on veterans day.

they're going to a nice school and i'm sure things are good for them. so they need to show that a different way. , basically. sean: the president of hampshire college says no flags will be flown until campus officials consult with students and staff about appropriately utilizing flags in the future. now to a close call for some kids in pennsylvania. check this out. you can see the kids nearly get hit by an out of control police cruiser. authorities say police were chasing a stolen car when one of the cruisers got hit by a van. the cruiser spun right toward a group of kids that was standing it narrowly missed them. >> i'm still shaken up, because you see that in the movies, not in real life, you know? so, it was kind of scary, but everyone seemed fine besides the officer. he was shaken up. i'm sure he went to the hospital, but very scary.

as for the driver of the stolen car he was chasing, police say he got away. turning now to sports. the celtics played at the minnesota twins last night. minnesota had just four wins through their first 12 games of the season. karl-anthony towns is their star. here, he gets blocked by al horford, misses another layup, then tips it in. later in the first, isaiah thomas found horford in the corner for the three pointer to put the celtics up, 18-13. boston trailed in the fourth 19-0 run and ended up winning the game, 99-93. the celtics play at the nets tomorrow. patriots defensive tackle alan branch has been suspended for violating the league's drug policy. according to espn alan branch is being suspended for four games after he tested positive for marijuana. branch is appealing the suspension. he has played in all ten games for the patriots this season.

mikaela shiffrin, up close and personal. the audi fis ski world cup is coming to killington in vermont this weekend. shiffrin, who grew up in the lebanon area, will race in giant slalom on saturday and in the slalom on sunday. on both days, the first run is at 9:30 a.m., with the second and final run set for 12:30. check that out. attention hockey fans. you have a couple of chances to catch some good games leading up to the holiday, and just after it as well. the monarchs play tomorrow night at home against florida. the teams will play again friday night in manchester. unh hockey will host rpi tomorrow night. they play saturday night against cornell at madison square garden. numerous turkey trots across the state are planned for this thanksgiving and starting today, we'll tell you about some of the races taking place. the eighth annual bow police association turkey trot 5-k is expecting about 400 runners and walkers.

high school and it benefits the bow police association. you can stop by the police department if you want to register. one of the seacoast races on thursday morning will be the dover turkey trot. its an 8:30 start on shaws lane by garrison elementary school. this is the final race in the dover race series, and benefits the garrison school pta. the second annual dash to the sea get underway at hampton academy at 8:30 a.m. it is organized by "think" -- teachers helping individuals, neighbors, and kids. they expect 300 runners, hopefully more. and the greater derry track club 5-k turkey trot is the oldest turkey trot in new hampshire. this is its 40th year and organizers are expecting more than 1200 runners. the race starts at 9:00 a.m. there are at least 15 turkey trots in new hampshire on thanksgiving, according to running in the usa. check those out. the massachusetts department of transportation is issuing an apology after a big mistake was

[laughter] officials say the sign was put up on november 15 and was taken down yesterday. dartmouth police noticed the sign and posted this picture on facebook. they joked that the best way to reach cape is to drive backward.
