above the national average. that is also about a nickel lower than a month ago, and is making travel for the holidays a little easier. >> you feel like you're filling your car up every couple of days or something like that when you're really traveling. and it can be quite a burden on me. >> it's going to be the second cheapest gas for thanksgiving since 2008. ray: aaa says the number of people travelior they expect this to be the second busiest thanksgiving week on the roads in the past decade. and also a reminder, if your plans call for you to travel on sunday afternoon, that is also expected to be very busy. reporting live in manchester, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: new on "daybreak," police in pelham are warning of a possible bad batch of heroin in the area. investigators say they have seen a sudden increase in drug overdoses in pelham in recent days, including three in the

and at least two people have died in the last week and a half. police think the heroin that is circulating is likely mixed with synthetic drugs, including fentanyl. a portsmouth woman is accused of selling methadone to a rollinsford teacher who died from the drugs. bryant lausberg was found unresponsive in his dover home back in may, and later died at the hospital. police now say that 38-year-old amy matton sold methadone to lausberg several times. lausberg several times. she is being held without bail, the red cross is helping a dozen people, including 10 children, after a fire in concord just days before thanksgiving. firefighters were called to thompson street around 2:00 yesterday afternoon after a tenant came home and found fire inside. crews were able to contain the fire to the kitchen of one apartment. no one was hurt, but it will be a few days before they can return. right now, police in hudson are looking for the man they say robbed the rite aid in town at

mask entered the store on lowell road around 7:45, and got away with some cash from the register. police in derry need your help identifying this man. they say he broke into the gilbert hood middle school early yesterday morning. officers found a broken window after alarms started going off around 3:00. they did search the building for about an hour, but didn't find anyone. however, this man was seen on surveillance video walking around inside. anything, he may have taken. a school bus driver in tennessee is now charged with vehicular homicide after crashing his bus in chattanooga yesterday, leaving at least five elementary students dead. 35 students were on board when the bus overturned and slammed into a tree. federal investigators will arrive today. abc's stephanie ramos is following the tragedy. stephanie: it's every parent's worst nightmare. chief fletcher: hamilton county schools has confirmed there were

woodmore elementary and are in grades k through fifth grade. stephanie: just a mile away from the chattanooga elementary school, a school bus, packed with kids, ran off the road, crashed into trees, ending up on its side in a tangled mess. bloodied students lay on stretchers, while other kids didn't survive the accident. chief fletcher: multiple children lost their lives. stephanie: officials say at least five kids were killed. right now, investigators believe the bus was most likely traveling too fast. the 24-year-old bus driver was arrested and is now facing charges. chief fletcher: johnthony walker is being charged with five counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment, and reckless driving. stephanie: it took rescue crews hours to get all the kids off the bus. 23 of them were sent to local hospitals. kirk: we're just asking for prayers. and our hearts go out to the families.

chattanooga will be open today, with grief counselors available for students who need them. stephanie ramos, abc news, new york. sean: officials in japan are warning that another powerful earthquake is possible in the next few days. this comes after a strong quake hit off the coast of fukushima yesterday, measuring between 6.9 and 7.4. experts say it was actually an aftershock of the massive 9.0 quake that triggered a deadly tsunami back in 2011. there was a tsunami nearly five h was minimal, and just 12 injuries have been reported. a manchester man is facing charges after police say they found his children living in deplorable conditions. officers went to an apartment on quirin street yesterday to check on james grenier. but when they arrived, they say the apartment was littered with trash, animal and human feces, urine, flies, and other insects. they say a two-year-old girl was found in a crib that was covered in feces, and a four-year-old boy was found in similar

however, scientists say the rising number of older americans may halt that downward trend unless more is done to keep brains healthy. the effort by massachusetts general hospital to take over wentworth douglass hospital in dover is getting a boost. the attorney general's office says the deal includes protections for the hospital's assets. the deal also requires the addition of eight full-time workers to provide mental health and substance abuse services. wentworth-douglass would keep its name and remain an independently licensed not-for-profit hospital. manchester tech company dyn is getting new ownership. the company has been sold to oracle, which is based in california. dyn officials say they are committed to keeping the manchester office open and growing. terms of the deal have not been announced. the stock market continues to surge, reaching new record highs. all three major u.s. indexes

today is already up. the dow is now just 43 points shy of 19,000, and the value of the u.s. dollar is now the highest in 13 years. millions of americans will flood stores this friday for all the black friday deals, but one company won't make any money. outdoor clothing retailer patagonia says it will donate 100% of its sales on friday to environmental groups, saying the environment is something everyone can support. the company already gives 1% of its sales to groups that fight to protect natural resources. more than 800 organizations will benefit from this friday's sales. so that is one way to kind of help that the planet, by buying some products there. kevin: after the faith giving meal, i am one of those people that starts looking through the flyers. every year, i resigned myself to the fact that i am not going to go shopping. then, i see the five dollar television. i am not one of the people

of the crazy people. sean: you are just not standing outside the door. kevin: when without saying. plenty of clouds the northwestern half of the state. clear skies and southeastern areas. a quieter morning commute away from the north country, where we still have light snow early this morning. we are continuing to watch snowflakes fly up north. the brisk wind through the afternoon, 30's to lower 40's. similar readings, but that wind gusting at times over 25 mph. start to lighten tomorrow, with sunshine. and then a couple of systems on track. a fairly weak one centered around thanks giving. another one late friday night and into saturday. for the time being, the clouds continuing to dive southeast. highs today in the 30's to lower 40's. the best chance of sunshine in eastern and southern new hampshire, while farther west

clouds. even up north, occasional light snow will mean an inch of accumulation in the hilltops. snow showers tonight and flurries tomorrow morning in the north country. for the rest of us, a blend of sunshine and clouds. out west, a thicker cloud cover at times, temperatures in the 30's, and a brisk wind. it is going to be chilly through the afternoon. light snow up north early this morning. not just higher terrain, but parts of the north country which have been totalmo lower 30's. with the wind, sustained 10-15 mph and gusts over 20 mph, it feels much colder. even with highs in the lower 40's, a chill to the air. they're not expecting the temperature regime to move much from these readings for highs each afternoon, going all the way through the holiday weekend. we went through a 19 day stretch of temperatures at or above normal.

for the month. but we are below normal for the time being, to round of the month. light snow down to flurries and later snow showers overnight. a good deal of sunshine. if you are traveling anywhere across the northeast, you should be fine for the day tomorrow. as we get later into thursday, there will be the chance of a little bit of light snow or flurry activity. we cannot rule out freezing drizzle if it occurs early enough in the day, with an onshore wind. tremendously organized. it is the second system that comes behind that that we will watch more closely, later friday night and into saturday. as i mentioned, temperatures do not move much. we modify a bit toward the end of the week and into the weekend. next system after thanksgiving will have a light chance of precipitation late friday night and saturday. i think over the entire holiday weekend, that is our best chance

sean: a something extra to be thankful for this thanksgiving. ray and mavis just celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. they are both in their mid 90's now. they celebrated by having a party at the restaurant where they first met way back in 1943, when ray was stationed there during world war ii. kevin: as far as the key to a long marriage, he says finding the right girl would be the key, while she says it is all about patience. sean: [laughter] sean: i thought the other key was, she is always right.

severely burned. the fire broke out last night at a multi-family building on pine street. when firefighters arrived, they say they found an injured woman inside the building. >> made it to the third floor, and they found one victim with -- on the third floor landing that we had to evacuate from the building. the victim has been transported to elliot hospital with severe burns. sean: at this time, there is no word on the woman's condition. the chief says crews were able the chief says crews were able to put the fire out quickly. were displaced. a one-year-old child is recovering this morning after being burned by scalding coffee. the incident happened last night at a home on cedar street. firefighters say hot coffee was spilled on the child. the toddler was taken to the hospital with burns on 18% of the child's body. an arrest warrant has been issued for a salem mom whose apparent drug overdose was caught on camera at a dollar store in lawrence, massachusetts.

watch. it shows mandy mcgowen's young daughter frantically trying to wake her in a store aisle. mcgowen did not show up for a court hearing on child endangerment charges last week. her daughter is now in state custody. a portsmouth pet store is asking for your help in tracking down a stolen puppy. the little shop of pets says this two-pound, three-month-old chihuahua was stolen this week. the owner believes the 900-dollar puppy was taken out of an open pen sometime sunday night or monday morning. right now, the biggest concern is that the little chihuahua is not getting the specialized food it needs. >> we don't know what it's on. and what is happening. and into sick puppy. -- it could easily crash and turn into sick puppy. we just want to get the puppy back. we're not going to prosecute. just please return the puppy before something happens. sean: the pet shop owner says she is concerned that the thief will try to sell the puppy online to an unsuspecting buyer. the dog is micro-chipped, so any

as the threat of a school bus driver strike continues to loom, a federal court now says it will not step in to help -- at least not yet. the timberlane and hampstead school districts asked a judge to grant an injunction to stop a possible strike by first student drivers. following a hearing with a judge on friday night, the school districts agreed to wait until another round of negotiations, scheduled for today. drivers in belmont authorized a strike. if it happens, other drivers in the state say they a off the job. the gates have been lifted in neighborhoods near the manchester walmart. this comes after months of heated debate, and complaints from residents. last week, manchester aldermen were unanimous in their decision to lift all of the gates and restore two-way traffic to president road and mack avenue. a new traffic pattern study is expected to be completed by the spring. new hampshire's 2016 election is

the secretary of state's office hopes to finish its recounts in several state races. for days, officials have been reviewing the ballots in 14 house races and one senate race. so far, the outcomes have remained unchanged, but the secretary of state will validate the results at the completion of the recounts. vermont senator bernie sanders returned to new hampshire to promote his new book last night. he spoke to a sold-out crowd at the capitol center for the arts in concord. the former pde called "our revolution: a future to believe in." it talks about his run for the white house and the future of our country. sanders says america needs to have discussions on serious issues. sen. sanders: you saw 1,000 times more coverage about emails or trump's attitude toward women. and i'm not saying that those are not important issues, but, you know, climate change is kind of important. sean: when asked if the book lays the groundwork for a 2020

the japan meteorological agency described this quake as an aftershock of the massive 2011 quake. it warned that another large earthquake could hit in the next few days. a massive pileup on a highway in china left 17 people dead and 37 others injured. 56 vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened during snow and rain. hospital officials say all of the people who were injured are expected to survive. kidnapping her newborn baby. the suspect, yesenia sesmas, said in a jailhouse interview that the victim agreed to give her the child, but backed out of the deal at the last moment. she claims the murder was an accident. she says she threatened the mother with a gun when it accidentally discharged. police say sesmas faked being pregnant for several months before the murder. the baby, whose name is sophia, was found safe.

about appropriately utilizing flags in the future. now to a close call for some kids in pennsylvania. check out this video. you can see the kids nearly get hit by an out-of-control police cruiser. authorities say police were chasing a stolen car when one of the cruisers got hit by a van. the cruiser spun right toward a group of kids that was standing on the sidewalk. but fortunately, it narrowly missed them. >> i'm still shaken up, because it was just -- you see that in the movies, not in real life, you know? everyone seemed fine besides the officer. he was shaken up. but i'm sure he went to the hospital. but yeah very scary. , sean: the officer suffered minor injuries. as for the driver of the stolen car he was chasing, police say he got away. turning now to sports. the celtics played at the minnesota twins last night. minnesota had just four wins through their first 12 games of the season. karl-anthony towns is their

are looking at an inch of accumulation up in terrain, while in central and southern new hampshire, a back and forth between clouds and sun. occasionally, figure cloud cover bumping against northern terrain will slide southeast. i do not expect much even in the way of flurry activity. everyone is going to be in on the northwest wind, which is going to gusts over 20-25 mph. low-pressure wobbling away into thna still breezy tonight and a little bit of a breeze tomorrow, but not nearly as gusty. a pretty good day if you are going to be traveling in new hampshire or across the northeast, with light snow continuing in the north country this morning. an additional and shove accumulation a possibility. highs yesterday were only in the mid-20's in pittsburgh and corporate yesterday. you will be in the upper 20's to near 30 today, which is where we start in southern areas.

between the clouds and sun in the southern half of the state area a thicker cloud cover today in the upper valley and northward, as the clouds bank up against the terrain and reinvigorate themselves with the northwest wind. scattered snow showers continuing from the notches northward. that will lighten down to flurries later tonight and early tomorrow. winds noticeable at 10-15 mph, and gusts over 20 mph through the afternoon, even into this taper overnight. high temperatures anywhere from the mid and upper 20's in for northern areas of the state to know the freezing mark and whitefield and berlin, to the lower 40's in some spots. without wind, it is not going to feel like that through the afternoon. if you are outdoors, the breeze will pick up and out extra bite to the air. we are talking temperatures again tomorrow continuing to work their way up into the 30's to lower 40's. it is with a good deal of sunshine. the next system approaches after

and the afternoon on thursday, there will be a system approaching. it may be just enough to kickoff lighter snow showers. maybe a couple of light rain showers. maybe patchy drizzle in a few spots, with temperatures just above the freezing mark. that is something we will keep track of. a larger system located back through the rocky mountains eventually approaches later friday night. as that system gets here, it looks like a better chance of picking up light rain or light snow, depending on the track and the night and into saturday. from there, it doesn't look like we will watch that system pull away saturday evening, setting up the drive home sunday looking good. a busy travel they wednesday. they look like the best days of the extended forecast. that's giving, there could be like precipitation, but it does not look like anything terrible. sean: we talked about those turkey trots happening, so you want to bundle up. the ice is almost ready for the third season of skating at
