we begin with the weather. live pictures in meredith. partly sunny and windy today. temperatures will struggle to break the 40-degree mark in some spots. kevin, you are tracking the potential for snowflakes on thanksgiving. kevin: gusty winds bringing it much colder air from canada. in the southeastern parts of the state, sunshine pushing temperatures up into the lower ng even some light snow following. there is the next system making tracks towards us. the good news is for the busy travel day tomorrow, we will have is nice today as we will have all week. sunshine and much later wins. after the increasing clouds wednesday night, the next system starts to move in. the other feature we have been seeing lately have been the winds. winds. the colder air is not going

it is not just for system for thanksgiving. there are 2 systems we're tracking going forward all the way through the holiday weekend. much more in futurecast in a few minutes. kristen: kevin, thank you. we are having some technical difficulty that hang on for a brief moment. new this noon, and assault on a lowell mother beaten to death in front of her son. 23-year-old amiriles huertas-perez of worcester is due in court today in the death of 44-year-old gloribel orengo. police say orengo was assaulted outside an apartment complex over the weekend after leaving a party as her son watched. huertas-perez is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. also new, this nashua man has been charged with drug possession after a scuffle with manchester police. officers pulled over dwight bennett last night. they say they smelled marijuana and spotted what appeared to be a small bag of heroin, which, at one point, bennett tried to

when he resisted arrest. in manchester now, a woman smoking while she was on oxygen accidentally triggered a fire inside this apartment building. flames broke out in the multi-family unit on pine street last night. firefighters found the 59-year-old in the stairwell with severe burns. she's listed in critical condition at mass general hospital in boston. a warning possible bad batch of heroin after a spike in overdoses there. all of those overdoses happened over the last week and a half. police are trying to spread the word to save lives. wmur's ray brewer is live in pelham with that warning. ray: kristen, pelham police say they have definitely seen an increase in overdoses since this heroin hit the streets, and it

even more deadly. this is heroin and drug paraphernalia confiscated by pelham police in the past. but now they are dealing with something different. >> within 24 hours from sunday morning to mid-morning on monday we had three overdoses. one was a fatal. ray: police say there is definitely a new deadly batch of heroin in pelham. >> whatever people are putting in their system is stronger than a normal overdose that we've been dealing with in the past. ray: police say that the heroin is probably being combined with fentanyl ander and this new concoction has another side effect that is hampering the ability of first responders. >> they are using narcan on subjects and it's not working right away. ray: police say right now they have two major goals concerning this deadly batch of heroin. >> we are eager to figure out a, the source and b, how can we help these people.

and as jim ryan reports, authorities say excessive speed appears to be a factor. jim: the bus, filled with more than 30 elementary school children, ran off the road and slammed into trees. jim: picturee show the bus on its side, wrapped around a tree. >> we heard the crash. we went outside, and we saw that the bus had turned over. roof hatch. jim: as emergency crews struggled to free the children from the mangled bus, worried parents waited to hear what happened to their kids. craig harris's daughter, a stepson, and a niece were on the bus. >> i almost lost it and had to sit down and gain my composure. i had to calm my wife down and other family members that were also affected by this. and it just -- it was just --

and you see these waves in the satellite picture. it is creating bumps in the atmosphere. plenty windy out there right now. along with it we have colder temperatures. those in cahoots at this point to make it fairly uncomfortable afternoon outdoors. you need the jacket. something we need to get used to after the first 90 days this month all above normal. we are not expected to go anywhere else anytime soon. you notice we still have light portions of the great north woods and the light mountains. nothing terribly heavy. stray additional inch in a few spots. comes with strong winds. either set of 40 in southern areas. no one will tell you it feels like 40 outdoors. gusts still over 20 miles an hour. a few near 30 miles an hour. those atop mount washington at hurricane strength.
