5:18 pm
of that it will be dry a good part of this night into tomorrow. as you see the next system on doppler radar back to our west, with snow and a light wintery mix in minnesota, that will move on in here for thanksgiving day. it will weaken a little bit. but maybe just enough falling out of the cloud cover to result in some slick roads at times. more on the thanksgiving forecast in a moment. upper 20's north. winds are still active, 15 to 3r get a wind chill temperature in the upper teens to lower to my 20's. so it feels the part of winter and that will be the case all night long. overnight lows mid to upper 20's north and central, all the way into southern parts of the state, possibly some upper 20's downtown manchester and along the coast. the cool air is locked in from new england, back into the midwest, eastern canada, great lakes, and that means it will be chilly for the big travel day
5:19 pm
and what about local areas close to new hampshire? josh is here with a look at the all important travel day forecast. josh j.: thanks, mike. we're looking at that travel forecast with a nice one on the way in terms of a good amount of sunshine out there. the question is what will the temperatures be. let's take a look here. for tomorrow we're going to see the temperatures when you wake up in the upper 20's to around the low 30's, depending on when you're waking up. but it will be still breezy in the breeze dying down, be the afternoon sunshine still helping warm things up a little. but it will be a chilly one with temperatures in the upper 30's and lower 40's. but the good news, lots of sunshine, blue skies. tomorrow evening heading out late in the day or evening hours, temperatures will drop quickly. we take a look at your hour by hour forecast for tomorrow, starting off chilly, by late morning mid 30's to upper 30's in southern parts of the state up ander 20's to northern 30's in northern and western parts of
5:20 pm
the temperatures plummet back down all over again, as we head into the late afternoon hours as well. here's a look at those temperatures dropping quite quickly tomorrow evening. the national point of view, as you can see here, we will see those showers we showed you a minute ago including snow in the upper midwest that will be heading into the great lakes regi. be terms -- mike has more for the forecast on thursday. mike: temperatures certainly on the cool sigh and they're going to continue to run at or below average. that means by the time we get to the daylight hours of your thanksgiving, that light wintery mix moves in and it could be just enough to grease up area roads. you notice on future cast, not a lot there, but we do have that narrow band of snow showers in
5:21 pm
reason on, into the lower merrimack valley, just a coating, maybe a half inch, a touch of freezing drizzle out there, but you get the idea, it could be just enough to make it a little bit slick as we go through thursday, any time after 8:00 in the morning right through the evening. so we'll be on guard for that as we go through thanksgiving. once we get into friday, a few mixed showers out there and they'll continue into saturday, likely changing over to a little bit of snow with temperatures back below freezing by well. where do we go beyond saturday into sunday, and the rest of the holiday stretch, as josh mentioned, travel day no issue at all. thanksgiving a different story, that light mix of snow and maybe a up the of freezing rain. if you put it altogether and it were all snow it might add up to an inch. but if we're right near 32 degrees and the roads ash

ahead. josh j.: the winter of 2014 to 2015 will be remembered for back to back storms that left record snowfall in parts of the state, like southeastern new hampshire. then last year the snow was near record low levels and the temperatures were mild. so are there any caters that can help us predict which scenario we'll see this year? that's the question on everyone's mind. there's never a guarantee when it comes to war around look at to make a reasonable guess. you probably know that last winter was an el nino year. well, it just been declared that now we are officially in a weak la nina season, which is identified as the cooling of the ocean surface near the equator in the eastern pacific ocean. the exact opposite of el nino. but similarly, la nina acts to bend the jet stream over north america bringing warmer and dryer weather to the southern
5:47 pm
northern plains and wetter conditions around the great lakes. but in the northeast the jet stream is often nearby, but maybe just north or south of us. since minor fluctuations can have major differences from one winter to another, we usually can't predict which way a la nina winter will trend. since this year has been classified as weak, here's a look at the last 10 weak la nina seasons and their associated snowfall amounts in concord. can we draw any sold i four of these seasons saw close to average snowfall, three of them well above normal, and three of them well below normal. since the effects of a weak ra known yeah may be very slight, they can be overshadowed by other factors, including the arctic and north atlantic ohs -- the polar vortex. they change more frequently, leading to periods of mild and cold temperatures.
5:48 pm
cold in siberia, russia which has helped our fall stay quite mild, but they will likely drift down our way at times. predicting these occurrences can usually only be done four to six weeks in advance. here's noaa's three-month climate predictions for december, january and february. for precipitation they're calling for dryer in the south and wetter in the north. but here in new england, nay just list us as e.c., equal chance. for temperatures, theyor which could suggest lower snowfall here. but we've discovered another major influencer here in new hampshire. there appears to be a strong connection between an above average temperature in november and lower than average snowfall. in the last eleven years, notice the four times that average temperatures higher than 40 degrees, the corresponding snow amounts are much lower.
5:49 pm
every single time there was a mild november, the snow that season was below average, every single time. does this guarantee a lower snowfall amount than normal? of course not. but it is very strong evidence that there may be. and so far this month our temperatures are above average. now, every year such parts of the state get a lot more snow than others. these numbers and naughts are simply to convey the averages, to give you a rough idea of what could be. with that in mind we here in the believe that this year's snowfall amounts will likely be average to below average. perhaps somewhere in the 40 to 60-inch range for concord, but long-term predictions in new england aren't always accurate, so we'll just have to wait and see. i'm josh judge, storm watch 9. mike: all right, josh just took care of the long-range forecast.
5:50 pm
days, a fairly nice start tomorrow. warner, you see fair skies and a gusty wind blowing the clouds from northwest to southeast. it was chilly today. temperatures running a little below the average. but slightly above where they were during the day yesterday. not much on doppler radar right now, so good news if you're traveling out and about across new hampshire tonight. if you're darting through the white mountains however there may be snow covered roads, a little light snow through parts of the white and that dry real estate on the satellite picture extends all the way back into the great lakes, so on doppler right car you're not going to find too much happening in michigan. points east through toronto. the heavy lake effect snows have shut down, which is good news for those folks in western new york, over two to two and a half feet in spots, digging out in a big way today. you'll notice the next system though in the midwest, that's marching in our direction, so that by thanksgiving day it's right on top of new hampshire,
5:51 pm
precipitation, but temperatures will be very close to where they are right now and when ever they're near freezing, a light mix of rain or snow could grease up untreated surfaces, so be aware of that for thanksgiving day of wind chills right now teens and 20's. so the winds still a factor and will be through the evening. we'll bottom out in the low to mid 20's north and upper 20's to around 30 in southern parts of the state. so again big travel day tomorrow, it will be dry, but also on the chilly side. and that advance the clock on future cast, notice after sunny skies for wednesday, clouds begin to roll in towards daybreak on thanksgiving. as for snow, notice how narrow a band it is. we're not talking about much 'in the way of an accumulation, a coating, maybe a half inch, that's it. but that's all it takes and maybe a touch of freezing drizzle in parts of southeastern new hampshire to make the roads a little bit slick. beyond that time frame a light mix on and off through
5:52 pm
then into friday, a lot of clouds, couple of mixed or rain showers south, couple of snow or mixed showers to the north. and maybe more unsettled weather by saturday into saturday night. high temperatures tomorrow, fairly close to where they were today, mid 30's north, upper 30's central, and 40 to 44 south, going to be great for the big travel day on wednesday. what about thanksgiving, well, again around 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. the clouds are thickening up and shortly after that time frame freezing drizzle around midday or early afternoon with the temperatures right near the freezing mark. so again that's what we've got for thanksgiving. for friday a couple of rain or mixed showers. saturday another system, tough to call how much precipitation, but could see some accumulating snow in many parts of new hampshire before it clears out as we go into sunday. right now monday and tuesday looking fairly nice, a few late day showers on tuesday. josh: thanks, mike. next, giving back during the holiday season.
