holiday weekend, with futurecast coming up in just a few minutes. erin: kevin, thank you. with some light snow possible today, the d.o.t. is taking extra steps to prepare. they were out putting a brine solution on part of the spaulding turnpike yesterday to help keep it from freezing over, and crews are ready to go if the roads get slick. officials are urging drivers to allow extra time, and whenever possible, avoid driving at the busiest times, like sunday afternoon, when people head home after the long holiday weekend. in other news the death of a man , in wentworth has nown ruled a homicide, but there are still many questions this morning. 60-year-old todd downing died early yesterday. wmur's ray brewer joins us now live from the attorney general's office in concord with the latest on the investigation. good morning, right. ray: good morning. we were in wentworth early yesterday morning, just hours after todd downing died, and the investigation was very active. late last night, police were

the home on atwell hill road just before 2:00 yesterday morning. when they arrived, they found downing had been severely injured. he would later die at the hospital. an autopsy determining that he died from blunt force trauma, the medical examiner ruling his death a homicide. investigators also spent time yesterday at a scene on buffalo road in wentworth, just a couple of miles away, but officials will not say how or even if the two locations are connected. so far, no arrests have been there is no reason for the public to be concerned. they did question two people yesterday in connection with the case for a couple of hours, but those two were released without arrests being made. reporting live at the attorney general's office in concord, ray brewer, wmur news 9. erin: thank you. new on "daybreak," firefighters were able to rescue two people from a burning apartment building in manchester last night. investigators say a cigarette tossed into a trash can sparked

pizza. dispatchers stayed on the phone with both people who were trapped, until firefighters pulled them to safety and sprinklers helped contain the flames. thankfully. however, there is a lot of water damage to both cesarios pizza and the element lounge. police in manchester are looking for the man they say robbed the t.d. bank on bay street. officers say the man in this picture handed the teller a note just after 2:00 yesterday afternoon, demanding cash and claiming he weapon was shown. police in laconia need your help identifying this man. he was caught on surveillance video going through vehicles in a parking lot along province road, and taking tools and other items. officers say several thefts have been reported over the last week, all from business parking lots, and investigators think that more than one person is involved. an autopsy is planned to determine how a man died, after his body was found along the

bridge street. the circumstances surrounding his death are not clear right now, and police are simply calling it an unattended death at this point. a frightening, chaotic scene in massachusetts ended with two people in the hospital last night. police say a woman backing out of a parking spot at the hannaford in waltham hit an employee pushing shopping carts. the driver then crashed into five more parked cars, forcing other people in the parking lot to jump out of the way. dragged a short distance, but -- did not suffer any serious injuries. police are now trying to figure out if driver error or a mechanical problem is to blame. millions of americans will sit down to a turkey dinner today, but at least two birds are breathing a sigh of relief. president obama kicked the holiday off yesterday at the white house with the traditional turkey pardon, sparing the lives of tater and tot. and as abc's janai norman

erin: hurricane otto is gaining strength as it bears down on costa rica and nicaragua, and is now packing 100 mph winds, making it a category two storm. landfall is expected near the border later today. the storm has already triggered dangerous floods closing schools , for the rest of the week. more than 15,000 people have alrebe and a hurricane has never made landfall in costa rica. the navy says it has been hacked -- exposing the names and social security numbers of more than 130,000 sailors. officials say the breach involved a hewlett-packard employee's laptop computer and affects current and former sailors. all those affected will be notified over the next few weeks. the navy says right now it does not appear that any of the exposed information has been

a rare, handwritten poem by anne frank sold for $148,000 at auction yesterday. the poem is also signed and was written for her best friend's sister. the sale price stunned everyone at the auction, as it was nearly five times what had been expected. the manchester boston regional airport is earning high praise as the best small to midsized airport in the country. that's according to a new survey and it was ranked 27th out of every airport in the u.s. manchester was cited for great customer service and easy access while also being comfortable and simple to use. a federal judge has ordered striking cargo airline pilots back to work, calling it in the public interest. about 250 pilots for abx air went on strike early tuesday. the company delivers for amazon and dhl and more than a million pounds of cargo has already been

rep. kevin: please, no. actually, that might wind up being better for me in the end. class of been drifting in. the potential for flurries or light snow showers, especially in western areas of the state. fairly light returns navigating northeastward. reaching the ground toward northern parts of new york, but that is headed into southern parts of canada. what that leaves us with is plenty of clouds across the area. anything we have had over the last four days. it started to kick up on sunday behind that front, and has been going all the way through last evening before settling down overnight. even as these few flurries go through, there is a lot of space going all the way back to the west before the disturbance starts to get in there later this evening. ahead of that today, there is the chance of a couple of flurries or light snow showers this morning, or a mixed showers into the afternoon.

this would have to battle through the day. while we cannot rule out one or two slick spots, the better chance is later this evening, as temperatures start to fall back into the 20's. we will have the precipitation making its way in from the west. there could be some patchy, freezing drizzle later tonight. there could be light snow up north, with temperatures below the freezing mark. we start in the upper 20's and low 30's. headed to near 40 in a couple of spots. not much of a winds to go along with this. as probably our better chance of precipitation. for southern areas, that is likely in rain form or freezing rain. in the northern half of the state, likely in the form of light snow. it could produce a quick half inch to an inch of accumulation. that is the kind of moisture we are talking about. not a tremendous amount. tomorrow, scattered rain showers. should not be an all-day situation. this is probably a little more organized than what will unfold

there could be a few inches of accumulation up north. southern areas could be in and out of rain showers. the next try for hours, maybe a quarter to a half inch of snow. maybe a full inch as you get into northern areas of the state. a lot of that falling later this afternoon and evening before dying off overnight tonight. clouds thicken this morning. temperatures either side of 40 in southern areas. a couple of snow showers or mixed showers into the afternoon. temperatures continuing to slide back near or below the freezing mark. temperatures overnight could set up re-freezing in a few areas after midnight. from there, scattered rain showers tomorrow. if you rain showers are a possibility into saturday. pretty good breeze sunday into monday, and that will be with sunshine. notice the warming trend beginning and middle of next week.

the attorney general's office in concord. and ray, what else are investigators saying at this point? ray: unfortunately, not much, erin. few details on this case are being released. as they say, it still remains a very active investigation. police were called to a home on atwell hill road just before 2:00 wednesday morning. upon arriving, they found 60-year-old todd downing suffering from blunt force injuries. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. investigators conducted interviews for hours from the plymouth police department, but so far say no one has been taken into custody. police were also seen standing watch over another home on buffalo road, just a couple miles away from the crime scene. >> the dog was barking continuously. i don't know what -- but he kept nosing over to the neighbor's house. and i don't know what was going

not commenting on whether the two locations are related. while no arrests have been made the attorney general's office has said they do not believe that the public is at risk. live at the attorney general's office in concord, ray brewer, wmur news 9. erin: ray, thank you. a strafford man accused of stabbing his daughter's ex-boyfriend and biting his face has been found not guilty of attempted murder. prosecutors say kevin hinrichsen attacked his daughter's ex-boyfriend when he spotted the northwood. because of a restraining order, the ex-boyfriend was supposed to stay away from the girl. hinrichsen's lawyer said the attack was in self-defense. he was convicted of misdemeanor assault and criminal mischief. the president at the university of new hampshire is condemning an increase in hate incidents on campus. he sent out a letter yesterday, saying those acts will not be tolerated. he says several students, faculty, and staff members have experienced racial slurs,

people on campus say they're glad this issue is being addressed. >> people feel like there is an issue going on. to have a place to go and seek out information and groep shelter if they feel like they are in danger. erin: the school is now asking for all hate incidents to be reported to unh police. new on "daybreak" -- somersworth police have arrested a suspected robber. 29-year-old marc beaulieu of up the service credit union on penny lane last week. the robber got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. beaulieu was arrested this week while he was being held at the strafford county jail on a probation violation. nashua police say 22 people are facing charges following the latest round of operation granite hammer arrests. officers say they seized cocaine, crack cocaine, and a handgun during two of the arrests. three people are accused of selling heroin, and nine people are accused of selling crack

make more arrests in connection with these investigations. rivier university in nashua wants to thank the mystery shopper who stepped in to help students provide thanksgiving meals to the needy. every year, the university holds its thanksgiving basket project. through a campus collection, hundreds of baskets are given to charities to be distributed to families in need. but on monday, there was a glitch. their card was declined at the register at market basket in daily limit. >> and a woman came over and asked what they were up to, and they explained the thanksgiving project -- and she actually offered to pay for the entire order, which was near $500. erin: how about that? along with that big donation, rivier university was able to give out nearly 500 thanksgiving baskets. they are now searching for the

kevin: your thursday morning and the start of your thanksgiving day. funny of breaks to the overcast. it makes the sunrise interesting. there are flurries trying to reach the ground. we will see at least a chance of snow showers today, or a couple of fake showers this afternoon. temperatures will be in the 30's. a much lighter wind, which is think everyone is going to appreciate, especially those running the turkey trots. we will get you through the holiday weekend, coming up. erin: overnight in a scaffolding collapse at a construction site. right now, rescuers are digging through the debris, trying to find a missing person who may still be trapped. it's not yet clear what caused the collapse. a sixth child has passed away, following a horrific bus crash in tennessee. family members say the eight-year-old boy died last night. police say the bus was going too fast when it went off the road and crashed into a tree on monday afternoon. the driver, 24-year-old johnthony walker, is now charged

police say there was no trace of alcohol or drugs in his system. a police officer in detroit has passed away after he was shot in the head while on patrol near the campus of wayne state university. 29-year-old officer collin rose died last night at the hospital. he is the only wayne state officer to be killed in the line of duty. police say a suspect was arrested after the shooting late tuesday night, but so far no charges have been filed. a police officer in idaho fought off a wanted fugitive who was hiding in a trunk. the officer stopped a car for not having its license plates. as he was talking to the driver, he heard noises coming from the trunk. when he went to check it out, the fugitive sprung the lid open, while holding a gun. the officer was able to get the weapon away from the man, and detain him until backup arrived. turns out the gun was actually a toy. a wine store employee in new york is recovering this morning

pocket. take a look at the surveillance video. you can see the man's pocket start sparking, and then all of a sudden, the e-cig explodes several times. he was taken to the hospital with burns to his hands and legs. at last check, he was in stable condition. the government wants smartphone makers to lock out most apps when phones are being used by drivers. the voluntary guidelines are designed to reduce crashes by distracted drivers. people behind the wheel could still make calls, bu enter text, browse the internet, watch videos, and look at photos. the national highway transportation administration says it will take public comment for 60 days before deciding whether to put the guidelines in place. on our facebook page, we asked if you think apps should be locked for drivers. at last check, 40% of you said yes, 39% said no, 5% said maybe, and 16% said they need more

turning now to sports -- people will be pounding the pavement all across the state today. a number of turkey trots are taking place. we've been previewing the races all this week, and here's a look at a few more. it will be a huge crowd for the sixth annual fisher cats thanksgiving 5k today. more than 2500 runners have registered. the race starts and ends on the warning track inside the ballpark, and goes right by wmur, twice. so please give us a wave. i might be out there taking some pictures this morning. the eighth annual seacoast rotary turkey trot begins at 8:30 a.m. at pierce island in portsmouth. costumes are encouraged. the purity spring thanksgiving day 5k in madison gets underway at 9:00 a.m. the logo you see here was designed by a kennett high school student. the rotary club of merrimack's 5k turkey trot starts at 8:00 a.m. at merrimack middle school. proceeds from the race go towards purchasing coats for kids, holiday gifts for the less

so we shall see. centuries after the pilgrims arrived in new england, we're now learning more about exactly where they lived in plymouth, massachusetts. archaeologists have discovered what is believed to be part of the original settlement. rhondella richardson, from our sister station, wcvb, shows us the new evidence. rhondella: the actual burial ground where the new artifacts were found is off limits right now, but this is the actual workspace, the inside lab for the umass boston field school. getting more authentic, thanks to grad and undergraduate students who unearthed several artifacts at downtown plymouth's burial hill. dr. ness: they found part of a calf skeleton, which the team has named constants. they found 17th century ceramics. a musket ball. and probably the most exciting for archaeologists but hardest to describe is stains in the dirt. rhondella: the clues in the soil -- a sign of how the 17th century village was actually built. and most importantly, its

dr. ness: this is the first time ever finding a 17th century post hole. >> the miracle of this discovery is that there is something left after nearly 400 years of construction in downtown plymouth. rhondella period muskets here standard, but researchers unearthed an actual musket ball, telling us more about the actual guns used. the remains of the calf will help identify the type of cattle used to graze the area. all of the newly found ceramics and other items are in a umass lab, but ceramic artifacts are always used as the mold for the pottery made in the plymouth plantation craft center. >> those dishes and those fragments of ceramics can tell us what they chose to have, what needs they had, how they ate, how they prepared their food. rhondella: for every one day of digging there are several days of research. there's much more to learn about these artifacts. in plymouth, rhondella richardson. erin: fascinating. as people hit this roads this thanksgiving. cumberland farms is releasing a the results of a survey about travel preferences.

as we go through the morning. there will be a couple of showers. i suspect early this morning it would be cold enough that most would fall in the way of a light snow shower or flurries in western and northern areas. we are going to gradually start to see things turn milder. highs today mainly in the 30's. it is going to be mid 30's to mid 40's starting tomorrow. anything that develops during the day could be mixed or rain showers, while at night it would be mixed or snow showers, especially in the north country. the strongest returns most likely region the ground are through new york and vermont. around here, clouds continuing to increase and thicken. the cloud will continue to lower through the afternoon. there is a certain break before the more appreciable moisture. the one we are expecting to move in late in the evening eventually arrives. if you are headed out in the next couple of hours, there could be some flurries and snow showers.

because of that. temperatures in southern areas going anywhere in your the freezing mark. we should go into the upper 30's to near 40 into the afternoon. the key as you look at these numbers is, the wind is going to be lighter through the afternoon. four consecutive days of winds gusting over 20 mph. no such winds today. if you have a thanks giving football game in the afternoon, the family should be fine. the turkey trot, no winds to contend with. afternoon. plenty of clouds. a couple of flurries or snow showers out west. maybe a mixed shower or rain shower in southeastern areas through the afternoon. later into this evening, the activity starting to pop up as the disturbance to our west starts to move in. a couple of rain showers or freezing drizzle. temperatures overnight hover in the mid 30's. up north, we will be in the lower 30's with light snow. tomorrow, scattered showers.

erin: it is investigation continues this morning into a homicide in wentworth. here's ray brewer. ray: police were called to 234 atwell hill road yesterday morning. when they arrived, they found that homeowner, 60 rolled todd downing, was found severely injured. he later died at the hospital. the autopsy determined he died from blunt force trauma. no arrests have been made, but
