thanks for waking up with us. i'm erin fehlau. sean: good morning. i'm sean mcdonald. yesterday, it was a slick morning commute. a lot of rain overnight. kevin: a dense fog advisory. not everyone seeing that. this ability is going to be down a quarter-mile. temperatures above freezing in most locations. that leaves minimal issues as far as the roadways themselves are concerned this morning. by later this could be an additional inch plus of rainfall. temperatures above freezing and most locations. -- in most locations. beyond that, visibility's will improve as rainfall moves in for the afternoon. into the evening, some of that will be heavy at times. let's take a look at your wednesday morning ride here in the granite state. we're joined live by 95.7 wzid's deb davidson. good morning, deb. deb: good morning.

especially through the concord area, on 393, 93, 106, and route three. also slow moving on 94 northbound from exit 15 through exit 20. 89 southbound is slow from hopkinton into concord. the northbound side, we are seeing heavy delays through warner. reports of icy conditions around the lakes region, so take it easy. along the seacoast, it is very foggy, so because cautious on 95 and the spaulding the wzid traffic network, i am deb davidson. sean: thanks. the attorney general's office is now investigating a total of four homicides in new hampshire in just the last week. erin: last wednesday, a man was killed in wentworth. on sunday, a little girl from berlin died. monday, a man was shot in effingham, and then another man was shot and killed yesterday in manchester. wmur's ray brewer joins us now, live at the attorney general's office in concord, with details on the case in effingham.

officials with the attorney general's office say that 63-year-old robert dishman died monday at the hospital from a single gunshot wound to the chest. officials with the attorney general's office say there was some sort of incident on ams way -- am's way in effingham around 11:00 monday morning, and a shot was fired. dishman was rushed to dartmouth-hitchcock medical center, but he passed away, and his death was ruled a homicide. it is not clear right now if that incidenpp but we did speak with a neighbor who says a man named bob does live at that address. he was surprised to learn what happened. >> that's just crazy. i don't know. it's -- i've heard him yell a few times, but -- i heard some -- i do not know what it was about. i heard some commotion, but i didn't think much of it. ray: so far, no arrests have been made in this case, but investigators say they do not believe there is any threat to

information, you are urged to get in touch with state police. reporting live at the attorney general's office in concord, ray brewer, wmur news 9. sean: meantime in manchester, , investigators say 51-year-old robert shatney died inside his thornton street apartment yesterday morning from a gunshot wound to his chest, and his death has been ruled a homicide. police were called to the area just after midnight tuesday morning, for a report of shots fired. so far, no arrests have been made, and shatney's daughter says she still can't believe r my dad was a loving, caring guy -- did favors for anybody. never knew how to say no. he wore his heart on his sleeve. sean: police spent all day yesterday gathering evidence, and they are urging residents in -- urging residents to be on alert, and to lock their doors and report anything that seems unusual or out of place. erin: the owners of a vape shop in laconia say they feel violated after someone broke in and stole dozens of items.

gloves, was seen on surveillance video inside the great northern woods vape shop early yesterday morning. police say more than $5,000 worth of merchandise was taken, including 40 vaporizers. the burglar cut the wires to the alarm, and then got in through a bulkhead and the basement. and even shut off the cameras after 13 minutes inside. >> gut-wrenching heartache. i mean this is something that , we've worked so hard for, for erin: the owners do plan to replace the stolen items, and they are hoping someone will recognize the person in the video. sean: tens of thousands of people are paying their respects to longtime cuban dictator fidel castro, and tributes stretched long into the night last night. and today, a caravan carrying his remains begins its journey across the country, before he is buried this weekend. abc's marci gonzalez is in havana this morning, following the long goodbye.

elizabeth: my family and i fear for my father. marci: now, the memorials continuing, as a caravan carrying castro's ashes begins its trek across the country ahead of a private funeral on sunday. marci gonzalez, abc news, havana. sean: back here at home investigators now say a loon , that died over the summer was shot. the adult loon was found on bradley lake in andover back in august. the loon preservation committee says recent investigation show that the bird died after being shot in the wing. in new hampshire, but 2/3 of adult loon deaths are caused by humans. erin: there is a new proposal to use drones to monitor high crime neighborhoods in one massachusetts city, but that idea isn't flying with some people. police in new bedford already have two drones. for the most part, they are used for search and rescue or swat missions, but one city councilor says drones could help deter crime if deployed more

kevin: the last day of november. 37 degrees at the coast. inland sections in the low and mid 30's. some of the lower valleys dipping near the freezing mark. we are looking at dense fog with an advisory through 9:00 a.m., and more rainfall this afternoon. more details in your forecast, coming up. erin: all right, kevin. health officials in san francisco are now telling anyone who has leftovers from a community thanksgiving meal to throw them out. sean: officials believe three people died and more than a dozen others got sick after eating food from the church-sponsored dinner, but it is not clear which menu item is responsible. diners included residents of assisted living facilities and homeless people. and investigators say some of those who got sick ate leftovers without attending the actual event. erin: investigators think an electrical problem may be to blame for a fire that killed a

but this morning, six people, including teachers and the director of the dorm, have been detained for questioning as investigators look into possible negligence. the victims include 11 children. another 22 people were hurt in last night's blaze. some of them were forced to jump from windows to escape the intense flames. a theme park in australia plans to reopen soon, six weeks after four people died when a ride malfunctioned. the owner of dreamworld says that the rides will slowly reopen, starting on december 10, as they are each inspected. however, t w in the accident will never run again. sean: if you are going to carry around a lot of gold, don't leave it sitting in the back of your truck in the middle of a busy city. that is our advice for today. police in new york city are looking for the man seen on surveillance, stealing a bucket full of gold flakes from the back of an open armored truck. the bucket weighs about 86 pounds, and the gold is worth $1.6 million. the man is seen staggering under the weight of the gold, but no

sean: governor maggie hassan is urging state lawmakers to fund an emergency relief fund for local dairy farmers. the fund was actually created back in 2007 to address shortfalls in milk prices, but it has never been funded. conditions have worsened for farmers this year because of the drought.

sean: 20 coworkers in tennessee are making big plans this morning after hitting the powerball jackpot. erin: right. the group claimed their prize yesterday after buying a ticket worth $421 million. they took the lump sum of about $255 million, and will split it evenly. every single person in the group says they plan to use the money to help others, starting by picking up tabs at local grocery and department stores. that is very sweet. a lot of them say, we are not going to stay on the job, but we will stay at least until you find replacements.

>> no one covers new hampshire like we do. now, wmur news 9 "daybreak." erin: good morning to you on this wednesday, november 30. it looks like we are ending out november with a whole lot of thick fog out there, and some very slick roads in spots. sean: we are hearing about accid stories. the attorney general's office is investigating a homicide in effingham. authorities say 63-year-old robert dishman died on monday after suffering a single gunshot wound to the chest. a homicide in manchester is also under investigation. officials say 51-year-old robert shatney was shot and killed at his thornton street home early yesterday morning. and a man from vermont will spend at least five years behind bars after pleading guilty to charges in connection with a deadly overdose.

conditions. there is a crash at the bow junction with 89. another crash at exit 13, where the left lane is closed. another crash at exit 12, where the right lane is closed. it is foggy through that area with low visibility on 393, 106, and now three. 89 south, slow from hopkinton into bow. 89 is crawling in the warner area. fr i'm deb davidson for 95.7 wzid. ,sean: death, thanks. -- deb, thanks. the attorney general's office is investigating two separate homicides that happened within 24 hours of each other in effingham and manchester. erin: there have now been four homicides in new hampshire in less than a week. the first one happened in wentworth last wednesday morning. police say a 60-year-old man died from blunt force injuries. in berlin, the death of a two-year-old girl was also ruled a homicide. authorities say madison dana died sunday from blunt impact

63-year-old man in effingham died from a gunshot wound to the chest. and just yesterday, another man was shot and killed in manchester. ray brewer joins us live now at -- ray brewer has the latest on the most recent cases. ray: around 11:00 monday morning, the attorney general's office says a 63-year-old man was shot at a home on am's way in effingham. the victim, identified as robert dishman, died at the hospital. the medical examiner's office saying he died from a single gunshot wound to the chest. while this case has been ruled a homicide, officials say the circumstances surrounding dishman's death are still under investigation. no arrests have been made, but authorities say there does not appear to be any threat to the public. meantime, the attorney general's office is also investigating a homicide in manchester. officials say 51-year-old robert shatney died in his thorton street apartment early yesterday morning, after suffering a

erin: an unexpected problem is threatening the town of exeter's holiday lights display. for more than three decades, the town has hung lighted garlands from poles, trees, and even the town hall. but this year, electrical code issues could pull the plug on this tradition. unitil installed new poles over the summer, changing the overall electric layout of downtown -- meaning that the garlands can't be within 40 inches of electrical lines. >> see the lights off, but we do have a responsibility. safety is our priority. we want to make sure both the public and their customers are safe. erin: tomorrow night is exeter's 100th celebration of the town's bandstand. unitil has offered to do line work, and local fire and public works crews are pitching in, in hopes of getting the holiday lights on before that event. sean: two men from vermont have pleaded guilty to charges in connection with a deadly overdose. authorities say daniel fogg sold heroin last year to francis

drug to the 23-year-old victim, cody kilburn. kilburn overdosed, and was found dead the next day. prosecutors say fogg was selling the heroin from a home in chesterfield. he was sentenced to at least five years in prison. a manchester man has been sentenced to more than 17 years in federal prison after being convicted of distributing heroin and fentanyl. 34-year-old zakee stuart-holt was also found guilty of money laundering. prosecutors say he'd been selling the drugs in the manchester area since at least during a search of his apartment, police seized nearly four pounds of fentanyl, and nearly $200,000 in cash. they also seized another half million dollars from a safe deposit box in his name. erin: there are new developments in the case surrounding a lawsuit against phillips exeter academy. a federal jury found that the academy wrongfully expelled a student after he had a sexual encounter with another student. yesterday, a judge ordered that the student referred to as john

that hearing will decide whether monetary damages would be adequate compensation. sean: well a stand down for , veterans is being held in tilton today. stand downs are events in which necessities, such as clothing and food, are supplied to homeless or at-risk veterans. experts will be available to address social service needs and offer assistance, with services such as housing and employment. today's stand down is being held from 10:00 to 1:00 at the tilton community-based outpatient clinic on west main street. another stand down is being held this friday in conway. erin: fish and game officers came across an unusual sight in canterbury over the weekend. check out this rare albino porcupine. it is very rare -- biologists estimate that one in every 10,000 porcupines is albino. it definitely sticks out. sean: easy to spot that in the woods. coming up on "daybreak," nasa is asking for your help in solving

kevin: last day of november. we start with temperatures above the freezing mark in most locations. slick spots and patchy, dense fog which could make it slow this morning. we are looking at clouds giving way to more rain late this evening. the details on that coming up. sean: we are following breaking news out of alabama. authorities say at least three were killed overnight, as a line of storms and possible tornadoes moved across the state. they say the victims were all inside a mobile home when the storms hit. officials say several other people were hurt, and more than a dozen structures were destroyed. erin: deadly wildfires continue to burn in parts of tennessee this morning.

more than a dozen others injured. the flames spread quickly on monday night, as the windspeed topped 87 mph, catching residents by surprise. police went around banging on doors and telling people to get out immediately. hundreds of homes have been destroyed. >> this is a fire for the history books, because it is unlike anything most have ever seen. >> it's difficult to go out into a community and try to protect and serve others when your own you've worked for is burning down. erin: rain is expected to move into tennessee today, which could help put out these devastating fires. but strong winds and lightning could also make the situation worse. sean: now to the latest on donald trump's transition into the white house. today, the president-elect is expected to announce more additions to his cabinet according to people familiar

trump is running out his economics team, set to name a goldman sachs executive as treasury secretary and billionaire investor wilbur ross as commerce secretary. eyes remain on the opening for secretary of state as trump and his incoming chief of staff time with mitt romney. governor romney: i had a wonderful evening with president-elect trump. we had another discussion about affairs throughout the world. nikole: trump touted an agreement with carrier, and indiana companies that says it will keep close to a thousand jobs in the state after threatening to move to mexico. president -- president-elect trump plans a major announcement thursday, the day he launches a thank you tour for voters with a rally in ohio. in washington, nikole killion, news 9. sean: yahoo! news says it has obtained a copy of the package deals the trump inaugural committee is offering. for $25,000, you can get two

games. the flyers got two goals late in the first period, including one from their captain on a power play. the bruins finally scored in the third period. david krejci got his third goal of the season, but the flyers were still leading 2-1. the bruins tied it up, and forced overtime. but the flyers went on to win it 3-2 in a shootout. the b's host carolina tomorrow night. erin: the season continues for the unh football team. we caught up with the guys on the practice field yesterday. they are gearing up for saturday's second round playoff madison university. kickoff is at 2:00 in harrisonburg, virginia. jmu beat the wildcats 42-39 in the regular season. the unh team looked spectacular in the first round of the playoffs. they beat lehigh 64-21, setting a record for playoff points by a unh team. they would love to run up another big number against the dukes, come saturday so we shall see.

help in solving a dilemma. erin: it is looking for solutions for waste management systems to be used in suits worn by astronauts. they are calling it the space poop challenge. astronauts can be in their suits for up to 10 hours during launches and landings, or up to six days if something catastrophic happens in space. the old solution was for astronauts to use diapers if they needed to relieve themselves, but nasa says they do not provide a healthy option for longer than one day. the public is being asked to submit solutions through december 20. the person with the winning idea will receive a $30,000 prize. sean: three genes. erin: payout big for the solution to this problem. sean: i am thinking a mini shuttle bay door with a force field. you would have a little lever. kevin: they are in zero gravity, right? sean: so you would have to -- i will not get into it on the air. much rain we need. this could be another quick and plus of rainfall making its way in, which does not end the drought by any stretch of the imagination, but an inch here and there does help. there might be a couple of showers before 2:00 or 3:00. the heaviest are focused late this afternoon and this evening. you will notice the temperature readings in a lot of locations are at or above 32 degrees early this morning, which is a completely different story than yesterday. lower lying spots where temperatures are near the freezing mark. that means the bridges, overpasses, off ramps could be slick in a few places this morning. not everywhere. it is not a widespread situation like we saw across 80% of the state yesterday. nonetheless, there are a few spots out there and you want to factor in extra time. dense fog advisory for the southern half of the state through 9:00. not everyone seeing this.

dense where it is going on this morning. as i mentioned, the chance of a shower as we work through 3:00 this afternoon. the bulk of the rainfall starts to move in late in the day and will continue to move through later tonight, with heavier downpours. it pulls away to partial clearing. temperatures will jump briefly from the mid 40's to mid 50's from north to south. the cooler air wins out through areas of light snow for the north country a possibility as we work through thursday night and early friday morning. from there, we will see scattered snow showers take over for the white mountains through the great north woods. 40's for most today. rainfall heavy tonight. we will wrap up tomorrow morning. the rainfall should be eased. breeze picks up out of the northwest with highs from the mid-40's to mid 50's tomorrow. still in the 40's on friday, with areas of light snow in the

north. otherwise, a bit of a breeze and partly sunny skies. the coldest day looks to be monday, with highs in the 30's. we get back to cooler air, starting the month of december. sean: maybe some snow soon enough. a new study shows that new hampshire is among the top 10 most charitable states in the nation. the wallet have studied -- the wallet hub study took into consideration factors such as the volunteer rate and number of charities per capita. utah was listed as the most charitable state, followed by new hampshire -- look at that -- came in seventh. arizona and california were listed as the least charitable states. erin: new hampshire in the top 10. that is great. speaking of giving, you can help make sure every child in new hampshire gets a gift this holiday season by donating to our spirit of giving toy drive. it kicks off this friday and runs through sunday at toys "r" us locations in manchester, nashua, and newington. the drive benefits the toys for tots program.
