directly. as you might expect, trump still has plenty more to say. the party went on without donald trump. >> i'm not sorry that he's not here. conservative convention would have been trump's place to rail against political correctness. instead they fired away at him. >> mr. trump ought to apologize. >> trump's attack on moderator megyn kelly after she challenged his comments about women. >> give me a break. doig we want to win? do we want to insult 53% of all voters? >> trump's invitation had been revoked but questions about him persisted. other candidates, like mike huckabee were tired of talking trump. >> i'm running for president. i'm not running for the social media critic for somebody else who is running for president.
9:01 am
>> trump's turmoil turned inward saturday. a new fight spilled into public view. long time business ally and adviser, roger stone is out. stone provided his resignation letter which cited the current controversies involving personalities and provocative media fights. stone wrote, "i no longer can remain involved in your campaign." more controversy. the campaign claimed mr. trump fired roger stone. and the reason they gave. that roger wanted to use the campaign for his own publicity. trump's top iowa campaign aide and former contest tant on his show the apprentice, tana girts likes his combative style. >> of course his tone will change when he's president. if you go after him, he's sending in the missiles right now. >> reporter: that has bnt donald trump method. when he's attacked, he attacks back. some of the candidates will be reluctant to go after him.
9:02 am
criticizing his words but not discouraging him from participating in the race. many of the conservatives we've talked to say the people should decide his fate over time and not organizations like the party or some of the official groups. craig? >> kelly o'donnell for us this morning in atlanta. kelly, thank you. donald trump will be on "maneet the press" with chuck todd. >> good morning, erica. >> these are far from the most inflammatory things that donald trump has ever said. yet, the reaction really does seem to be different. why is the tide turning at this point? is it the tone or the target? >> i think it's a little bit of everything. i think it's the accumulation, number one. if you look at it, he's been growing the amount of people he's insulted over the years, starting during the berger movement and moving to hispanics with his comments about mexicans and veterans with john mccain. now women with megyn kelly.
9:03 am
it adds to the angst that kelly is a star that -- this has last straw feel to it, number one. second, the republican party, i think many leaders now know, now. at a time when they have got to figure out how to unite and -- they're demographically challenged going up against democrats in '16. this isn't helping. >> kelly talked about the fact that in the past, any targets have been reluctant to respond in any way to donald trump because he attacks back. that seems to be waning a little bit too. jeb bush was very clear when he said, the real issue here is that he could push aside voters, specifically, women voters. how much is that a part of the equation at this point? >> i think that's the issue now. it's sort of all of the candidates, many of them, i don't want to say all of them. not all of them are taking direct shots. behind the scenes they all say this. at first it was trump is trump and they think the swing voters would separate trump from the republican party. now there's a concern that
9:04 am
trump's problems will now bleed into the republican party here and start to stain them even for the long-term. i think that that's what jeb bush is talking about. i think many of the candidates are saying to themselves, if donald trump's words are used against them if they're the nominee. jeb bush, think scott walker. what they said in the moment will matter in pushing back against that criticism. >> there's been a lot made again recently about this phone call that happened between former trump. in recent days, both camps have denied that in the phone call the presidential race was discussed at all. it hasn't silenced speculation. it's interesting. what do you make about the renewed buzz about that call. >> there's plenty that believe donned trum isn't a real conservative. positions on health care and even on taxes. they think that he's nothing more than some sort of democratic plant.
9:05 am
the clintone phone call feeds into that narrative. whatever that phone call was about. and i think that it sort of is just nervousness. he did a belly flop in the republican pool. he's suddenly dominating the race. conservatives who would wish somebody else would do it are wondering how did this happen, why is he doing this? they're going to conspiracy. >> chuck, thanks. always nice to see you. we'll see you in a little bit when donald trump joins you on "meet the press." police in texas asked the fbi to join the investigation into a deadly shooting of a 19-year-old college football player. there's a firestorm of outrage online as a critical new piece of evidence emerges. mark potter has that story. >> reporter: in a security camera video outside a car dealership. christian taylor can be seen jumping on a vehicle and breaking out the windshield which police say he did after
