>> contrary to the matt lauer school of thought it is possible living germ-free could be detrimental to your health. >> reporter: cleanliness may be next to godliness -- but it doesn't guarantee a clean bill of health. it's an idea researchers call the hygiene hypothesis. it argues that modern society is too clean and is preventing the immune system from learning to deal with germs naturally leaving us more susceptible to illness. allowing the odd germs to flowish is important when it comes to kids. and it could spare them from the on set of allergies. children who grow up on farms surrounded by soil, dust and domestic animals have immune systems that are better protected against asthma, hay fever and allergies. why? according to a new study from a group of belgian researchers, exposure to the great outdoors allows their immune systems to
8:03 am
react more efficiently to a wide range of germs. but for the 50 million americans suffering from seasonal wheezing and sneezing, how do you clear the air? let's bring in dr. natalie azar. good morning to you. i guess i get this. you want to build up a certain immunity to germs. the question is how much is too much in terms of sanitizing? the reason it's called the hygiene hypothesis is it is evolving. the idea has been around for a couple of decades. just to summarize what we are saying, it's postulating that because of the industrial society and our decrease in infections because we are cleaning, cleaning, preventing, vaccinating and all of that there is an unfortunate rise in allergy and asthma. to understand abnormal it's important to understand normal. what should be happening when a child is born, critical post natal period where they are exposed to things.
8:04 am
i think of it as a dance between exposure and how your body reacts. the immune system is fine-tuning itself so it's not reacting against itself and causing allergies. if a body is busy fighting infection it won't fight itself. that's a way to think about the idea if you are not exposing yourself to things your immune system has nothing better to do than become allergic or attack itself. >> let's look at things we clean every day and decide whether to clean them less. hands. how often? >> that's the thing. honestly there is no easy answer. one thing that's important is the microorganisms we are talking about aren't necessarily like flu viruses and measles. we are talking about complex parasites and what we call the microbiota or gut flora. >> that sounds terrible. >> people need take homes. it's flu season. you should wash your hands. if somebody sneezes wash your
