"today in new york" starts now. good morning everyone. it's wednesday morning, september 9th. i'm darlene rodriguez. i'm michael gargiulo. storm team 4's chris cimino is here with the forecast. chris, the back to school forecast a significant one because of the heat.

the summer may be over but the heat is hanging on. classrooms will be stuffy across the area. lori bordonaro is on staten is nd wnkh more on the first day back. >> reporter: and darlene, when you think about that back to school, you think about jackets. you think about leaves falling off the trees. but right now, it doesn't feel like it's almost fall at all. roughly, one-third of new york city schools do not have air conditioning. it may be very warm welcome for students headed back to school today. yesterday's record heat left many sweltering in new jersey. we i saw one student guzzling water outside the classroom in newark where there were many complaints about no early dismissal. in connecticut, many schools let out early. in new york city, school is scheduled to begin and end on time. mayor de blasio will be at ps 59 to greet students before the bell rings. one student said she's lucky her classroom is cool.
