what mr. trump said. [ applause ] >> i think she's got a beautiful face, and i think she's a beautiful woman. >> reporter: jeb bush led the charge, taking on trump. >> jeb, i was a businessman. i got along with clinovn. i got along with everybody. that was my job, to get along with people. >> no. more energy. i like it. >> reporter: later, bush defended his name. >> your brother's administration gave us barack obama. >> one thing i know for sure, he kept us safe. i don't know if you remember. [ applause ] >> reporter: many reviews declared fiorina the biggest winner, seizing her debut with an attack on planned parenthood. >> if we will not stand up and force president obama to veto this bill, shame on us. >> reporter: clear specifics about foreign affairs. >> having met vladimir putin, i wouldn't talk to him at all. >> reporter: critiques of hillary clinton.

democrat, ask them to name an accomplishment of mrs. clinton. >> reporter: rubio passionately defended speaking spanish in some interviews. >> if play get their news in spanish, i want them to hear it directly from me, not from a anslator. >> reporter: there were lighter moments. bush acknowledged smoking pot in high school. >> 40 years ago, i smoked marijuana. i'm sure others did it and wouldn't want to say it. i'm sure others wouldn't want to say it on tv. i'm sure my mom isn't happy i did. >> reporter: punctuating the night the candidates picking their secret service code names. >>siigh energy, donald. [ applause ] >> mr. trump? >> humble. [ laughter ]. >> reporter: late last night
7:02 am
exclusively to governor jeb bush, who said the difference between donald trump and ronald reagan is night and day. he said he was energized by his performance and called the event more of a performince art than a debate. he said he'd gladly debate donald trump one-on-one. we'll have part of our interview with him coming up at 8:00. he addressed his sagging poll numbers, insisting it's still way early. back to you. >> peter alexander, thank you so much. carly fiorina is with us now. good morning to you and thank you for waking up early. >> good morning. how are you? >> i'm well. let me get you to channel your inner donald trump. tnight? debate. when i went in, half the audience hadn't heard my name and didn't know i was running for president. i think i successfully introduced myself to those who did not know me and demonstrated, once again, that i am the most qualified candidate
7:03 am
>> a lot of viewers felt you put trump in his place for his comments about your looks. trump says he wasn't talking about your face when he said, "look at that face." he said last night, you have a beautiful face, and you are a beautiful woman. what did y whink of that response? >> well, donald trump says many thinexgs. we all have to live with what we said. >> when you say that women in this country heard what e said and knew what he meant, let me push you on that further. what do you think women heard itwhen donald trump said that about you? >> you know, i think that women are still caricatured and criticized differently. i think it's only a woman who would be criticized for her appearance while running for the highest office in the land. i think women know that. women deal with that every day. i think women understood.
7:04 am
>> you may well be the gop nominee. we don't know. hillary clinton may be the democratic nominee. do you think if there are two women running, that neutralizes that issue for clinton. any gender advantage? is that one of your merits, in your mind? >> i'm not running for president because i'm a woman. i've never been a token in my life. i am a woman, half the nation is women, we are half the potential of this nation. hillary clinton is going to have to stand to account for her track record and her accomplishments, or lack thereof. that's what this election should be about. >> you talk about the importance of a track record. i know you have gotten into the reasons for your dismissal from hewlett-packard, and i don't mean to delve into that with this question, but let me ask you, republicans, if anything, want to win come next november. how can you assure them that you are a winner when your last
7:05 am
ended with this firing, and your only run for office ended with a loss? how can you tell them, i'm ready to go the distance? >> you know, when you lead, you challenge the status quo, which is what the american people want now. you make enemies when you challenge the status quo, and i made some on the hp board and have been opening about my firing from the day it happened. it's true the man who led my firing since has taken out an open letter in the "new york times" in which he says he was wrong, i was right. i was a terrific ceo. he backs me. he says i would make a magnificent president. i think what's important -- >> let me force you on that. in politics, and you know this well, if you're explaining, you're losing. is it a weakness that, if you go forward in the process, you are going to have to delve into the record over and over again and defend your tenure, since that was the experience on which you're running? >> no, i don't think it's a
7:06 am
all of us are going to have to defend our track record. mrs. clinton in particular will dove to defend hers if she's her party's nominee. it's one of lies about benghazi, about her e-mails, about her server, a lack of leadership, lack of accomplishment. >> carly fiorina, one of the most talked about candidates on the stage last night. thank you for your time. we appreciate it. >> thanks for having me. let's turn to nicolle wallace. msnbc political analyst. savannah asked carly ferae iorina who won the debate. did she? >> that stage was hers. nobody was tougher on donald trump. it was do or die for the establishment candidates. carly won the night. >> you say nobody was tougher on donald trump. there was a moment in the debate, and we talked about this earlier, where jake tapper, the moderator, tried to get a couple
7:07 am
of the candidates to say whether they would trust the temperament of donald trump with the nuclear codes, or a finger on the nuclear button, if you will, and no. why? >> they wouldn't say yes either, which was interesting to me. everyone on the stage signed the loyalty oath, meaning they'll support the nominee of the party. if it's donald trump, you know code. i thought they let them off on that. it's a yes and no question. nobody answered it. >> what kind of night did trump have? there was a lot of substance and we didn't hear a ton from him there. >> he was a train wreck, and his supporters won't care. i would guess his numbers in the near term will go up a little bit, despite the fact that he was complete ly ly having no substance. i think he's grown as a
7:08 am
candidate in interviews. i think he's grown as a candidate on the stuff. his debate performance, i thought, was less than the first one. >> some of the candidates on the stage right now were bordering on the brink of extinction before the debate. >> right. >> who had a good enough performance to stave off disaster for a while? >> chris christie introduced himself the most effective way of the night. they went through and gave an opening statement. chris christie said, take the camera off me. show the audience. he said, are you confident that kids' lives will be better than yours? nobody raised their hand. he made it about the people, not about himself. he had a great night. >> jeb bush? >> he was presidential and did what his base of supporters needed him to do. stood up to trump, and did it in a personal way, which is hard for him. stood up for his brother's record and his wife's dignity. >> nicolle wallace, thanks very much. nice to see you. >> thank you. as the republican rivals
7:09 am
clinton, she was on "the tonight show." jimmy fallon asked clinton to weigh in on donald trump's run for the white house. >> i think that he's going to go as long as he wants to go. >> yeah. >> more power to him. i mean, it's one of the great things about this country. >> sure. >> if you're over 35 and you're eligible as an american citizen, you can actually run for president. he's making the most out of it. i'm having a good time watching it. [ laughter ]. >> i do. i find it amazing. >> a little earlier, clinton shared a phone conversation with donald trump himself, kind of. jimmy actually played the part. take a look. >> you want to win? here's what you have to do. first, yell. i yell all the time. in fact, this phone isn't even
7:10 am
i'm just yelling. next, pick three things everyone loves and seau ay you hate them. puppies, stupid. rainbows, total losers. fall foiliage. >> she came back with a glass of wine. >> it was good. >> natalie is here. good stories overnight. an earthquake that caused concern even at home. >> that's the other story overnight. millions evacuated in chili after a massive earthquake wednesday. one person is still missing. cell phone video shows bottles and boxes flying off store shelves. several costal towns saw flooding from tsunamis. the president says the country's military is assessing the damage.

7:12 am
at the same time, it's not as big of a concern for a lot of investors and traders out there, because even if they were to raise interest rates, it would be by a quarter of one percent. for perspective, on a $150,000 mortgage, that raises your monthly payment by about $20. on the typical auto loan in america, you're talking about a $3 increase to your monthly payment. it is a big deal, and it symbolizes the u.s. economy is getting back on track and no longer in crisis. remember, these interest rates, for as low as they've been, helped stock investors and bond investors and homeowners, but disadvantaged retirees because you can't get interest on your savings accounts or cds. this is a huge decision for a lot of folks. we'll be all over it. it happens 2:00 p.m. eastern today. >> we'll be watching cnbc to watch what happens.

peter alexander is with us again from simi valley. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning to you. heading into last night, it was clear that a lot of the focus was going to be on the front runner, donald trump. he was the man many wanted to knock down. it turned out there was one thing, despite the tough exchanges we witnessed last night, that all of the candidates had in common. of course, that was hillary clinton, the opposition to the person they believe will be the democratic nominee. >> peter, thank you very much. now to a story that has a lot of people talking. a texas teenager landing an invitation to the white house after he was handcuffed and detained for bringing a homemade clock to school. a teacher mistook that for a bomb, leading to ahmed's arrest and a frenzy on social media. janet, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. the 9th grader has gone from handcuffs at his high school to hero, with a presidential

visit. >> if anything good is to come, at least he gets to have a trip of a lifetime. janet >> check of the weather now from dylan. >> we talked about the tsunami and the threat for the california coastline. when you have an earthquake that happens under the water, which happened off the coast of chile, underneath, and the water above it rises and flows out in different directions. that's why, even though it's thousands of miles away, we will see higher wave heights than normal along the coast of california, and also across hawaii. that means waves inundate this area, and we could end up with danger rip currents and a higher storm surge. something to keep in mind. some beaches are closed in california because of the threat of that tsunami. it's just an advisory, something to be mindful of. especially along the coast of california and in hawaii, especially today around noontime, when the high tides kick in. across the eastern half of the

we saved today? >>a lot. come in today for great deals like 10% off vinyl siding and asphalt shingles when installed through lowe's. i sure had a lot on my mind when i got out of the hospital
7:35 am
what about my family? my li'l buddy? and what if this happened again? i was given warfarin in the hospital but i wondered if this was the right treatment for me. then my doctor told me about eliquis. eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. pnot only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots, t but eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding v than the standard treatment. knowing eliquis had both... turned around my thinking. pdon't stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. peliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. pdon't take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. pif you had a spinal injection while on eliquis pcall your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. pwhile taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily... pand it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. pseek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. peliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. ptell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. v eliquis treats dvt & pe blood clots.
7:36 am
v plus had less major bleeding. both made switching to eliquis right for me. ask your doctor if it's right for you. we're back at 7:41 with the lone survivor of last month's horrific shooting that unfolded in virginia on live television. vicki gardner suffered serious injuries when she was shot by the man who killed reporter alison parker and photographer adam ward. gardner is with us along with her husband. good morning to you both. >> good morning. >> vicki, we spoke last night. i knew you sounded good and your spirits were high. now, i can see you look good. the whole country wants to know how you're feeling, how you're recovering, how you're doing this morning. >> well, it's a day by day recovery, and hard to know what to expect as each day goes by,
7:37 am
but i am feeling better. when you combine up the physical and the mental, i feel like i'm the poster child for recovery. i'm feeling good. >> well, you look like the poster child for recovery and resilience, for sure. vicki, normally, if i talk to somebody who has been through something like this, i think i can't imagine what it must have been like, but unfortunately, in this case, so many people, including your husband, saw this unfold on television. i know that you decided to watch that video. why was that important to you? >> yes. well, we certainly want to get -- your mind can conjure up all sorts of things. i wanted to make sure that what my mind is think and reality match up. i think it's very important. this is not something you can suppress. you just really need to face it and piece together those pieces of the puzzle. it's helpful for everybody. >> vicki, i know you remember every single thing about those moments.
7:38 am
take me back to that time. what was going through your mind? how did you survive? >> well, i will say, let me start quickly of saying, in preparing for this, the whole idea was a great, big celebration of the 50th anniversary of smith mountain lake. what can we do to showcase this? we had ideas four years in the working. ideas galore. lots and lots of fun. when alison and adam and i got together, we began sharing all of these things and saying, how can we put it all into three segments of a live show, we had a great time in doing that. so it unfolded as meeting with them and showing them all of our materials and, you know, how can we best portray? adam was a pro at finding the best angles and working off of alison, of how can we say this
7:39 am
in the best way? so we did the first segment there at the visitor center. alison. then in the second segment, it was -- you know, which was probably 30 minutes later, we had another person, marketing person, jerry hale, who came to help us out and describe another aspect of what will be happening for the next year. he did just a remarkable job. thankfully, jerry stepped away and said, "i have a lot of other meetings." i thank -- thank goodness that he left. the third segment was to be done outside, as the sun was coming lake. the office and visitor center is there on the water, so what a perfect setting for us to go ahead and do this third section.
7:40 am
create everything, trying to be focused on the camera, focused on alison standing next to me, and then probably the part that everybody has heard over and surreal. we saw movement behind us. i saw movement behind us, of somebody coming up. not knowing what their purpose was, not knowing if it was a maintenance person looking for answers, you know, just not understanding. i saw somebody that looked a little boxy and which, of course, the full armor gear explained that. rapid. it d unfolded from there. his arm went up and so unexpected. a mind can't conjure up reality, even though you're living it. he was shooting. we did, youiknow -- again,
7:41 am
you've seen many things that transpired. adam went down. all of the fire happened to be at face level. alison had moved off in a different direction, and my -- i just felt the best thing was just to drop, to pretend as though i had been hit and drop and go into fetal position of which, of course, it was somewhat quiet. he did whatever it was that he did that i couldn't see because of my position, and then he came back, just i guess to be sure, and shot me in the back. then from that point, there was a lot of things. a lot more than i can explain at this point. rescue came in. everything that anybody could possibly do to take this tragedy
7:42 am
and turn it into the very best scenario they could, they did. with our rescue team, ur police, with everyone. >> vicki, as you said at the beginning, you are the absolute picture of resill yans and ience and recovery. you survived in an unthinkable situation. tim, i know was happy to talk to you. you spoke to him in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. we're so happy to see you, see what good condition you're in. i know how much you feel passion for that community, and we thank you. you're the best advertisemena for the town of smith mountain lake. thank you for your time. we appreciate it. >> well, if i can just say one last thing, i do want to say that this community, what i want to showcase, is what a community does right when a tragedy happens. we hear a lot of communities that just don't know how to deal with it. this community did it right. they pulled together. they continued to be respectful. and

happened, in such a great ay. >> yeah. they certainly have. we're so happy to see you both. thank you so much for your time this morning. just ahead on where are they now, we'll talk to a former prisoner of war, more than a decade after her capture and rescue in iraq. she'll open abou (queen's "you're my best friend" plays) ooh... you make me live, whatever this world... at petsmart, we know that pet adoption changes lives. that's why petsmart charities helps save more than a thousand homeless pets every day! join us! no matter where you adopt, come to petsmart for a free adoption kit with over $400 in coupons. i really love you it's our gift to you for providing the greatest gift of all. you're my best friend! for over 30 years, in study after study, advil is unsurpassed in pain relief. nothing is proven stronger on aches and pains than advil. not tylenol. not aleve. nothing.

8:12 am
thank you for being here. it's great to be home. >> but the story became controversy because the account of lynch aggressively firing back against enemy captors had been exaggerated by the government. in fact, lynch had been knocked out during the ambush. in 2007, she testified before congress. >> the bottom line is the american people were capable of determining their own hero -- ideals and they don't need to be told lies. >> while lynch continued the road to recovery, she earned two degrees. in 2007, she also became a mother to dakota ann, named after her best friend who didn't survive the ambush in iraq. >> jessica lynch joins us now. good morning. good to see you. >> thank you so much. >> we love seeing dakota ann, 8 years old. how is she? >> wonderful. she's upset she had to go to school this morning and not be able to watch it. >> you know, we've kind of watched you grow up before our eyes. one of the things i like about you, jessica, is you always tell
8:13 am
it like it is. i know the recovery has been hard. the physical recovery. let's start there, you've had 22 operations. you're still in pain. >> i'm still in physical therapy therapy, too. i'm still, every day, i go at least two to three times a week, depending on my schedule. i work really hard at just trying to keep up the strength and the mobility. i'm so fortunate to have such a good pt team that keeps working with me and allows me to continue to get better. >> somehow, you've managed to have a baby and a family, get two degrees. you teach, you speak. >> yes. >> how is life treating you? >> it's been crazy. it's been a hectic life but, you know, for me, it's always been about the military and how i can still give back. make sure that we continue to support our troops that are overseas. i'm very fortunate and very lucky and blessed that i have

i've been able to do. such as the schooling and education because that was one of my main reasons of going into the military, was to be a kindergarten teacher. yeah, it's been a crazy, hectic past 12 years. >> i know there have been good >> yes. >> even just recently, you talked about seeing a therapist and working through some of these emotional issues. >> right. >> how is that going, and are you surprised that those terrors are still with you to this day? >> yeah. i mean, it's getting a little better. having somebody besides family and friends to talk to, an actual therapist, that kind of knows what some of the other troops are still going through. being able to just lay it all out there for her, it's kind of a -- it's been an amazing healing process for me. i still have the nightmares. i still am dealing with a lot of the pain that goes with the traumatic injuries. the leftover.
8:15 am
i think it's just one day at a time, and still working with it. >> one thing that kind of surprised me to read, that you told our producer, is there are still people out there that are skeptical about what happened and the story. you said it as clearly as you can. what do you do with that at this point? >> really, because that's been one of my biggest struggles, is handling the whole criticism that has come with the bash lash of the stories that were created. the fabricated stories. even though i've come out and told the truth and tried to do my best to set the record straight, and make sure the ones that were in my unit, such as sergeant patrick miller, that actually did the -- a lot of the killing, i want to make sure the people that deserve the credit get the credit. not me, who was knocked unconscious and didn't even get to fire off a shot. it's kind of amazing that, you
8:16 am
know, even 12 years later, the stories that were created, the fabricated stories, are still being targeted at me. you know, somehow that i had something to do with those stories, that i created them, that i, you know -- i'm like, no, no, no. i was just a soldier in the same unit with all these other -- just hoping to survive. >> when people see you and see how well you're doing and hear your story again, i think they'll be touched. jessica, great to catch up with you. thank you so much. by the way, jessica has written an essay for us. read it at today.com. tomorrow on our series, where are they now, we'll talk to amber fry, the woman dragged into the scott peterson murder investigation when she found out he lied about not being married. we'll check in with amber tomorrow morning. savannah, thanks very much. you may have heard a rumor, we're getting ready for a concert from duran duran. to get you ready, here is a look

8:23 am
that i knew that there was this association with myself and shoes, primarily because of that great character i was privileged to play for so long. i knew -- well, i felt honor bound by the relationship that i had with all these women, and i had to do it right and well and produce a quality shoe. >> you've done it really well because this business has taken off in a short period of time. you're in major stores. i mentioned fashion we can ek. looked? >> no. i have an extraordinarily wise business partner, and we're long-time friends. i've been shepherded by his knowledge and the years that he spent in the shoe category. no, i think i'm a diligent and ridiculously hard worker. we, of course, wanted it to have some success. we wanted retail partners that
8:24 am
we wanted colors and neutral, single sole, out of fashion, and a shoe made in italy, which is an unusual sedition to decision to make. >> i'm surprised me mentioned this because isn't light supposed to come from the hechb s -- heavens? >> internally. >> you mentioned the character you're associated with. >> yes. >> all the rumors. every time you do or say anything, probably just now because you mentioned the character again, people say, number three, "sex in the city 3," is it coming? what is the final decision? >> there is no decision. it remains a not often had conversation. i know, and michael patrick knows well, the story we might tell if we ever tell it. the real truth, and i'm not being cagey, is we've not discussed a when. >> it's not front or back burner, it's no burner.
8:25 am
sits on, no burners. but i don't -- it's such a hard question to answer because everybody reads and projects so much into what i say. there is a story. when and if we tell it remains unknown. is that clear? >> i got it. >> any way that can be changed, misconstrue misconstrued? >> of course. social media is already on it. >> we'll talk about your upcoming divorce? >> what? oh, brother. >> you're on a show called "divorce." sorry about that. excited to go back to hbo? >> pot stirrer. >> i thought you called me worse. >> never mind. discuss it later. yes, i'm excised, surprised, sort of can't believe i'm back there. it's home. i think i might never have expected it, but it's really exciting. it's terrifying. i'm nervous. i have an amazing group of people.

8:29 am

less entitled child is our parenting expert, the author of the me, me, me epidemic. good morning. >> good morning. >>@ we see kids seem to be more entitled these days? >> well, there are some societal differences. the fact we don't need our kids to contribute for our family to survive like we did generations ago on the farm. we have social media, technology and reality tv, which plays a role. the biggest cause is the over parenting. over indulge, over invested in success, jump through hoops, it makes them believe it's all about them. >> let's get to your tips to combat this. let's start with what's to expect more. >> our kids are more capable than we give them credit for. we need to expect them to -- toddlers to teens to contribute every day. family contributions that they are responsible for, and expect them to take on more responsibility down the road. they'll learn life skills and be happier for it. when kids tribute, they're happy about that. >> you say that means doing
9:27 am
chores and adding to whatever it is that needs to be done around the house. >> absolutely. those are all really important. then one of the other strategies we have to think about is giving up on giving in. so often, parents say yes when they really should say no. we do that because we don't want the battle. we need to stop that and have the courage to say no. we'll have to put up with pouting and disappointment in the short term, but in the long term, it'll teach the kids they don't get what they want because they whine enough. >> handing over the reigns. >> every time we rescue our kids or we intervene on their behalf, we rob them of the opportunity to take responsibility for themselves. figure things out, maybe face a scary situation. little by little, they stop trying. we need to hand over the reigns and let our kids be responsible. it's their job to remember their homework. we want to role play, how they can have a conversation with a teacher about a grade or withfi the coach about more playing time. we'll be there to support, but it's their responsibility. >> i love this next one.

you say it's time for parents to shut down the atm. what is the best way? i've wondered about this. setting up an allowance for your kid. i pay my son $1 a day if he makes his bed and does everything i want him to do. the thing we want to stay away from is handing over $5 and $10 every time they ask. a week allowance is important. we wantto make sure they have a list of expenses they're responsible for. little kids cover toys and thtreats when they go to the store. older kids budget their allowance for school lunches, clothing, entertainment, but that allowance and expenses formula is key so that they learn how to manage money. so when they have a real paycheck and bigger expenses, they'll be prepared. >> you do the point system in your house. >> earn or lose points, and it's building up to a goal. >> sure. >> the last one, uncenter their universe. this was about gratitude. >> kids think it's all about them, so we have to focus that to the world around them.
