things are happening out will. >> reporter: trump, who helped lead the birther movement in 2011 never corrected the man by pointing out that president obama is a christian born in the u.s. and he never pushed back against the statement muslims are a problem. the republican presidential front-runner didn't answer our questions as he left, but later his campaign framed trump's response around religious freedom, telling nbc christians need support in this country. their religious liberty is at stake. when we pressed, a spokeswoman added mr. trump was referring to the need to protect christians' religious liberties, as his previous statement says and nothing more. the moment echoing one from the 2008 campaign that ended differently when john mccain drew praise for stopping a supporter who called president obama, quote, an arab. >> no, ma'am, no, ma'am. he's a -- he's a decent family man, citizen that i just happen to have disagreements with on
7:01 am
>> at trump's rally, some distanced themselves. is that who trump supporters are? >> no, no, not at all. >> reporter: and online a potential rival attacked. hk hk calling it disturbing and just plain wrong trump didn't denounce his questioner adding cut it out. trump's birther past has not been much of a factor in this campaign so far. trump himself staying silent on all this overnight, matt and savannah, but look for this muslim moment to come up potentially when trump speaks to conservatives later today in south carolina. >> all right. hallie, thank you very much. >> new jersey's governor, chris christie is here right now. he's running for republican presidential nomination. governor, good to see you. good morning. >> good to be back. >> does a candidate for president, in this case the republican front-runner, have a responsibility to shut down a supporter when the supporter erroneously says that the president's not an american, that he's muslim and then goes on to say we have a problem in this country. it's called muslims. does mr. trump need to apologize to the president and to muslims in.
7:02 am
>> he's got to decide what he wants to do for himself but would i tell you that if somebody at one of my town hall meetings said something like that i would say that and say the president was a christian and was born in this country. those two things are self-evident. >> do you think it would be right for mr. trump to apologize to muslims this morning? >> listen, i think it's -- donald trump's got to decide as we've seen, said this all along. he's got to decide how serious a candidate he wants to be and how he handles different problems like this are going to determine that in the eyes of the american people. i'm not going to lecture him about what to do and i'll tell you what i would do, if somebody permitted that and brought that up at a town hall, listen, before we answer, let's clear some things up for the rest of the audience and you have an obligation as a leader to do that. >> you want to be the general election nominee. is trump doing long-term damage to the republican brand if he's insulting muslims, latinos, women, veterans, prisoners of war? i mean, do you worry about the effect this is having for long-term prospects of the republican party? >> i don't, savannah, but a in
7:03 am
the end what's going to matter is who is the nominee of the party. the party's standard bearer, the person who winds up holding in his or her hands the burden and the opportunity of defining the republican party, and so we're a long way from that. being ahead in the polls, as i've said many times in september, doesn't mean you'll be standing on the stage in cleveland in july so let's see what happens between now and july and then we can probably answer that question a lot better. >> seems so hard for anyone to get attention these days. i looked at that stage the other night, governor. all those podiums. how do you get from the podium on the end to a podium closer to the center? how do you break out? >> listen, i just think you keep being yourself, matt. if you try to be somebody else, the voters get that, and they detect a lack of authenticity. they detect if you're trying too haar. be yourself, and that's what i tried to do at debate on wednesday. i don't know, had nine or ten minutes of time in the three hours, but the fact is that i think people got to see a bit of who i am on a broader national stage and you'll see things
7:04 am
start to happen from there but it's a long slog. i love folks who say to you all the time, you know this, running for the presidency is a marathon and then they say what are your poll numbers today? well, come on. it's a marathon. it means we won't have any kind of even inkling of what's going to happen for four or five months. >> all right. we'll do a little lightning round, if we could, all right. >> do you think the government is going to should down over de-funding planned parenthood? >> probably not. >> joe biden, is he going to run for president? >> i hope he does. >> what about pope francis, would you consider him a transformative pope? >> we'll see. certainly his attitude, the way he has dealt with the church in the beginning and with the faithful has the potential to be transformative. john paul ii was transformative. we learned that over a period of time. i think we'll learn move about the pope. look forward to seeing him last week. >> ahmed mohammed, the young man who brought the homemade clock to school. did the school overreact? >> tough a touch thing. obvious that they did when you look at facts, but we also know
7:05 am
we live in extraordinarily dangerous times and people are really concerned, and that's part of what i've been talking about on the campaign trail. the president hasn't met the burden of making people feel safe and so you're going to have instances like this that are a problem. >> governor chris christie. governor, good to have you. >> happy to be back and this is really quite something, to be sitting up here. amazing. i feel like big-time now. this is great. >> like matt lawer. >> no, no, no. please, please, stop, stop. i'm not nearly that famous? governor, food to see you. let's talk about the democrats. hillary clinton hitting back at another republican to candidate carly fiorina. she went after clinton several times during the debate. nbc's andrea mitchell has more on that. andrea, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. carly fiorina, the only woman in the republican race, lit up the debate stage by partly targeting hillary clinton, the most famous woman in american politics. >> oh, i'm just thrilled to be with you. >> reporter: hillary clinton in new hampshire firing back at the
7:06 am
>> lots of bickering, lots of attacks. >> reporter: it was carly fiorina who had the sharpest edge, challenging clinton over the controversial videos released by an activist group, purporting to exposed planned parenthood. >> i dare hillary clinton, barack obama to watch these tapes. watch a fully formed fetus on the table, its heart beating, its legs kicking while someone says we have to keep it alive to harvest its brain. >> reporter: clinton responded on cnn. >> i think we ought to be very clear that planned parenthood has served to provide health care, necessary health care for millions of women. >> reporter: and in a letter to fiorina the women's health group told her your claims are completely false, claiming the videos were heavily edited and that they charge only to cover costs of providing fetal tissues to medical researchers, but
7:07 am
fiorina is standing by her comments. >> she says all of us are equal in the eyes of god. >> reporter: fiorina has cast herself as clinton's chief republican critic. on the debate stage hammering clinton's record as secretary of state. >> mrs. clinton, if you wanted to stump a democrat, ask them to name an accomplishment of mrs. clinton. >> if anybody is interested, you know, there's a long list about what i have done and i'm very proud of it. >> reporter: about clinton now trailing vermont senator bernie sanders in new hampshire she's spending three days trying to shore up her base, women voters across the state. >> oh, it's great to talk to you. thank you all very much. >> thank you. >> reporter: and even though fiorina is sticking by her story, the "washington post" and much more fact checkers, independent fact checkers say there's no such video of a live video inside a planned parenthood facility. still conservative republicans in congress say that they are going to try to shut down the government by the end of this month over this issue. matt and savannah.
7:08 am
>> let's turn now to some terrifying moments on a flight out of hawaii overnight. at least 17 passengers were injured when their plane encountered severe turbulence. nbc's key simmons is following this for us this morning. key, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. just hearing about this but it does look as if people have had a pretty scary experience on board this flight. 1322 passengers are on this flight from hawaii to the philippines. what we're hearing from manila airport is that 17 passengers were injured. a medical team were rushed to the plane as soon as it touched down around 4:00 a.m. eastern which is the afternoon in manila. now, we're seeing pictures of passengers emerging. it looks like this woman has perhaps an ice pack on her head so that gives you an idea of the kinds of injuries. as i mentioned, the details are just emerging, but apparently it was an airbus 340 flight pr101. guys, thank goodness this plane touched down safely. all the passengers are off and
7:09 am
injuries are only minor, so thank goodness for that. as i mentioned, the details are just emerging, guys. >> sounds scary, key simmons, thanks very much. we're heading into the final weekend of the summer and it will be a hot one for millions across the country. dylan is in for al. what can we expect? >> last little hurrah. fall officially starts next week and temperatures in lubbock, texas yesterday hit 100 degrees this. area of high pressure is continuing to pump in these records and across parts of new england yesterday we saw some isolated records. today i think we'll tie some records. burlington, vermont, the record is 87 degrees. we should get up to about 86, could jump up to 87. new york, record is 87, could hit 87 and same in boston. these are temperatures running 10 to 20 degrees above average so it's exceptional heat that is going to stick around through the day today before this cold front moves in, and look at the difference as we go through the weekend. in buffalo, we'll drop down to 69 on sunday and by monday it's 73 degrees. new york mid-80s on saturday
7:10 am
so even though we'll start to see things cool off, we're still going to be above average, and even taking us into october temperatures should be staying on warmer side. >> okay. dylan, thank you very much. >> tamron is in for natalie and you've got more on aftermath of this terrible earthquake. >> absolute, good morning, everyone. the death toll is rising this morning as rescuers search coastal villages in chile damaged by this week's powerful 8.3 magnitude earthquake. officials now say that at least 11 people died when the quake shook central chile for a nerf-shattering three minutes. property damage is likely to run into the billions of dollars. more than 1 million people were evacuated as waves generated by the quake pounded the coast. experts say the country's tsunami alert system and earthquake building codes probably prevented a catastrophe catastrophe. oscar pistorius finds out today whether he'll be granted sentence. pistorius was supposed to leave prison in august to serve under

8:31 am
i'm -- i'm amazed by the career and by the sheer luck that i've had and mainly finding the people that i work with has been a miracle. how hard is it to be keith richards, i mean? it's a blessing, man. >> cool. >> lucky you, by the way. >> how cool is that. >> the idea of him -- never would do a vegas residency but the idea of him being at a piano bar singing old muddy waters tunes or ruby tuesday. >> i'm not that good at the tuesday." >> uses it not as an instrument but a paintbox, it's a creative tool for him, just cool. >> like my hair brush. up next, remember the term conscious uncoupling, famous term that gwyneth paltrow and her new ex chris martin used.

we are back at 8:39. with a break-up actually be kinder and gentler instead of gut-wrenching? in a moment we'll meet expert who says yes, but first the phrase she coined and the celebrity couple whose famous uncoupling thrust her into the headlines. >> actress gwyneth paltrow and coldplay front man chris martin announced on the website goop they were consciously uncouple after ten years of marriage. it left a lot of people wondering just exactly what that phrase meant. despite their conscious uncoupling the couple says in many ways we're closer than we've ever been. >> ukraine just said it's finished withdrawing the last of its troops from crimea, the police is now final. they are not calling it a split but a conscious uncoupling. >> there were jokes about the phrase. paltrow herself even said later said it was a bit goofy but conscious uncoupling became part of a new vocabulary about break-ups. paltrow and martin made their uncoupling official when they divorced earlier this year.

from each other while raising their two young children. well, katherine woodward thomas is a licensed therapist, relationship expert and author of a new book called "conscious uncoupling," the term she coined. katherine, good morning. good to see you again. >> thank you. it's great to be here. >> i remember talking about this after the gwyneth paltrow and chris martin break-up and everybody suddenly had that phrase on their lips. you coined it, but you've never actually knew them or treated them. somehow they learned about your >> yes. >> and i'm so grateful to them for popularizing the concept and for starting a global conversation about how we might better break up and really for initiated something that people were unaware of and a whole new possibility for how this might be done. >> and you've now written a whole book about it. i had to laugh. the first book was about finding the love of your life and now your second book is about how to break up. >> well, you know, people change and sometimes they grow apart and sometimes they grow together, but, you know, if --

i'm not pro misery, so if there comes a time when it's the right thing to do for a couple to part ways there's a way to do it where everyone is left happy, whole, healthy and free to move forward with an open and fully healed heart. >> you've got a few tips for us this morning that are drawn from the book so people can get a flavor of it. the first thing you should do if you're breaking up take your heart emotions out of of it. >> it's very hard to do. a lot of us want to aspire to a good ending but it's very hard to do because our bodies are flooded with flight or fight hormones and break-ups can turn ugly very quickly and one the things to remember is you and your children, if you have them, will be living with the consequences of every action you take and for every choice you make for many years to come so when you want to lash out press the pause button, and instead just ask yourself what am i feeling right now? you're probably feeling a lot of things, sadness, anger, hurt, but you want to name them
8:36 am
because that will fin to de-escalate your emotions and put you back into the driver's seat. >> you say people should take personal responsibility. a lot of people might say, well, wait, he did this or that, why do i have to somehow let them off the hook. >> we get very stuck in those stories and partially because they are true. people do behave badly, you know, so even if it was 92% the other person's fault you want to know what your 3% was so that you can trust yourself moving forward to never make these same mistakes again. >> and finally you say don't let time heal a broken heart. >> i liken a broken heart to a broken leg. we would never just let a broken leg heal on its own accord unless you want your heart to heal too did i fencive and too easley bruised moving forward so you want to be proactive in your own healing process. make an intention to create something positive out of this experience. learn those lessons so that you can have a healthier, happier experience of love moving forward. >> again, the book is called "conscious uncoupling.
