couldn't escape his latest controversy. >> would i consider putting a muslim american in my cabinet? absolutely no problem with that. okay? the question coming after trump didn't denounce a supporter last week who called muslims a problem. and who incorrectly claimed president obama is not christian or a u.s. citizen. now trump's finally breaking his silence by noting he rarely is. >> for the first time in my life i got in trouble by not saying anything. i didn't say anything. >> reporter: trump defending himself by reading a serieses of tweets outlout loud. >> am i morally obligated to defend the president. christians, that's all of us, need support. >> reporter: the candidate trying to shift the conversation to religious liberties, a key issue in iowa. >> i brought my bible. >> reporter: in hopes of widening his lead over ben carson and ted cruz. >> the president's faith is between him and god.

he's not apologizing for refusing to correct the man at town hall. he did not apologize after talking about carly fiorina's looks. those did not appear to have a measurable impact on his front-runner status. any reason to think it's different this time? >> no, it isn't. what you just laid out is why it isn't. the people who support him are with him because he's unapologetic. he does sort of verbalize thought bubbles, or as somebody said what people yell at their tvs, he says in public, that's why they're attracted to him. what -- to me, if you take this week as a whole, we learned, number one, you have a whole republican field comfortable going after him. i think that had an impact on trump. and none of these controversies help him expand his support base. at some point there are not

and 30% is not a winning number when it's down to two or three. >> let's talk about joe biden for a second. the first democratic debate about three weeks now. is that the drop dead date for the vice president to get in this thing? >> if he wants to be the nominee it is. technically the drop dead date is november 5th, actually, because november 6th is the first filing deadline for any presidential primary in the democratic side it happens to be alabama. if he wants to win, he needs to do it by the end of the month. my own reporting and sources i talked to, he's been traveling the country this week, meeting with key democratic leaders. the message is this, he wants to run. he thinks there's room for him to run. by the way, his wife is on board. this idea that joe biden is hesitant about running is not true. if he wants to run, she's behind him.
9:06 am
