"today in new york" starts now. good morning, everyone. wednesday morning. it is september 30th. i'm darlene rodriguez. >> i'm michael gargiulo. chris has the morning off. dave price is here with the forecast. some people driving through some heavy rain. >> very much so. good morning, folks. let's get right to it. heaviest rain still to come later in the week. right now the good news is much of this is pulling to the north at this hour. our three radar sweeps showing we have seen the worst in the city. we a going to see a little later on better weather roll in our direction. that's the good news. we are going to continue to watch this storm. we're not seeing the clicker

and manually, if we can, from the weather center move to the north where at this point you're seeing is half an inch to three-quarters of an inch an hour beginning to fall in places like duchess and putnam county. out to the east in suffolk county right now, very, very heavy rains. the good news is out of the metropolitan area, it has pulled away as far as the rest of the day. let's look at what you can expect. areas of rain and 73 degrees. still showers popping up through the day. that's a possibility. 76 degrees should be our high temperature. mainly cloudy tonight and very, very big changes in the forecast. watch out if you're driving to the north of the city. visibility very limited. that's a quick look at what you can expect today. lauren talking about all the problems on the roadways. >> yes, we have quite a few problems out there on the roadways, including some flooding. i'll get to that in a moment. we have an accident that shuts down route 9 in briar cliff manor. that's shut down in both directions.

then heading over to new jersey on route 22, we have a transformer fire that shuts down the road westbound by old route 28. just talking quickly about some of that flooding, some southbound on the west side highway as well as the harlem river drive. where we have the bigger issue is the cross island parkway southbound between northern boulevard and the long island expressway. there's flooding it and a mudslide. we'll have more weather and traffic ahead. >> lauren, thank you very much. now to that breaking news on staten island. a three-alarm fire inside a church on delafield avenue. tracie strahan is there. is the heavy rain helping or hurting firefighters? >> reporter: i can tell you it appears they do somewhat have things under control here at the house of miracles on delafield and elizabeth streets. 140 firefighters have worked so hard on this. the flames so intense at some points, the steeple of this

let's show you some of the video that was taken via cell phone that we obtained just a few moments ago. it was taken by a man who lives right behind the church. firefighters told them to leave the area. the office of emergency management actually told people in this area via twitter to close their doors, to close their windows, the smoke that intense. this was a three-alarm fire. 140 firefighters at this church that was luckily believed to be vacant at the time. as we bring you back live now, you can see there is a heavy presence of firefighters. also, we've seen a lot of police here on scene. we're going to figure out what's behind all of that. again, three-alarm fire here on delafield avenue. it's not clear if it's under control at this point, but like i said, we're about to speak to the chiefs. they're right behind me. we'll bring you an update as soon as that becomes available. back to you. >> tracie, thank you. right now, the heavy rain
