we have the latest with the breaking news from ron mott in london. >> reporter: good morning, carson. metro jet flight disappeared from russia radar over egypt 23 minutes into the flight from the city of sharm el sheikh in egypt en route to russia. the officials confirm to nbc news it crashed in the sinai peninsula and jets located the wreckage of the plane. it is too early to pinpoint a cause of the crash. the area where the plane went down is near the scene were terrorists clashed this summer. according to the associated press, quoting the egypt committee, the pilot reported technical difficulties and inn text tension to be land at the nearest airport. the 18-year-old airbus a-321. the jet was descending at the rate of 6,000 feet per minute

before the signal was lost. the air russian transportation official said 217 passengers and crew members were on board and it was handed off to cyprus officials, but they never made contact with radar. it is suspected that many of the passengers are russian tourists returning from vacation. russian jet 9268 is confirmed lost from radar carrying 217 passenger and 7 crew members and crashed in the sinai peninsula of egypt. carson and erica, back to you. >> ron mott in london. thanks. >> let's turn to tom costello who handles aviation news. tom, what are investigators looking at? >> reporter: i think they have to look at a number of things. they will look at the weather conditions at the time. right now, there is no suggestion that weather played a role. the mechanical history of the airbus a-321.

the biggest airbus in the family. it has a good record. they will look into the mechanical history of the plane and we don't know which engine configuration on the plane. one made by ge and one made by rolls royce pratt and whitney. they will look at the rate of descent. at last report, the plane was coming down 6,000 to 7,000 feet per minute. that is not a terribly unusual descent rate. it would suggest that somebody must have been trying to control the plane. keep in mind that for example, to compare that rate of descent to the plane we know crashed. air france 447 over the atlantic, descented 15,000 feet per minute.

we don't know the circumstances. we need to get a little more information before we determine if the pilot was in control of the plane trying to guide the plane down or not. one other point. there was an original report from the scene, as you know, very often the original reporting turns out to be wrong. some original reporting that voices may have been heard in the wreckage. if that's true, that would suggest to me anyway that the pilot did manage to somehow put the plane down on the desert floor before it came apart as opposed to breaking up in flight. it is all conjecture. we don't know. the authorities will have their hands full. we believe it will be the egyptian authorities and russian authorities and because it is a plane made in europe, made in french, the french investigation team as well. >> you will continue to stay on top of it for us.

now to the deadly floods in texas. two people dead and others feared missing after the severe weather hit overnight. there are authorities on the way to inspect the areas. we have nbc's charles hadlock in texas for us. >> reporter: good morning, carson. central texas hit with record-breaking flooding. two people dead and one still missing. central texas is reeling from a wicked amount of rainfall this halloween weekend. more than 14 inches of rain in less than 24 hours. >> there's one of our vehicles that got washed away. >> reporter: near wimberley, a woman and her friends were rescued from the national guard. in san marcos, teachers and students were brought to safer ground when flood waters hit. sirens warned of the danger, but

>> i sat there for a bit and i tried to do something to find help. i'm glad this guy found me. >> reporter: in south austin, another driver rescued from the massive flood waters. the flash floods are only part of the problem. tornadoes touched down south of austin and san antonio. peeling a roof off a high school. and high winds hurled a truck trailer on top of a hotel. no one was injured. in south texas, lightning knocked out the radar at the national weather service in brownsville. within minutes, people watched the swollen blanco river crest above flood stage. >> flooded within 15 minutes. >> reporter: here in wimberley, the rain has ended, but the clean up is just beginning. just two weeks ago, central texas was in the middle of a drought with threatening wildfires. now with the halloween rains, october is one of the wettest on

it's cool and bright, similar to yesterday. then the clouds start to roll in later this afternoon. today's high temperature, a comfy 56 degrees. we are following breaks news out of egypts. officials there saying they are searching for a russian passenger jet. >> the plane disappeared over the sinai peninsula about 20 minutes into the flight from the egyptian resort town. egyptian officials have told nbc news that the jet crashed in the northern sinai peninsula. they also say that egyptian air force jets have located the wreckage of that air bus. the reports that the pilot reported technical difficults y ies and wanted to land at the nearest airport. happening now closer to home, police in new jersey

investigating a stabbing on the rutgers university campus. >> reporter: one of the items investigators are going to have to look into this morning is what may have provoked this violent attack here on campus. police tell us that stabbing happened around 7:15 last night at mettler hall. that's one of the dorms here off of college avenue on the new brunswick campus. two people were taken to the hospital, but the extent of their injuries is still unknown. and it's still unclear if they were students here at the university or if they were visiting. police tell us however that they do have a suspect in custody this morning. we're still waiting for more information on the possible charges that could be pending. that's the latest live here at the new brunswick campus. new this morning, teenager now facing charges in the

shooting death of a 16-year-old boy on a busy downtown brooklyn street. 17-year-old malik peters opened fire outside an appleby's restaurant. surveillance video showed a large group of teenagers running after shots rang out. peters faces charges this morning including murder. a woman was shot while she was riding a bus. she felt that bullet fly past her head. news 4 obtained surveillance video from a nearby store showing what happened after shots rang out. she's bandaged and bruised but says she's okay. her brother translated for her. she says she doesn't remember much, just being scared. >> she feel something warm come into her hair.

>> not on the bus for a while? >> no. >> police believe that at least three round were fired and that the bus was not the target. authorities are looking for several suspects. a family of a seven-year-old girl on life support is mourning her death today. she has been on life support since wednesday when she choked on food at school in brooklyn. they were praying for a miracle and now they've hired an attorney to find out how all of this happened. in connecticut the son of a misses cup ing couple has now been charged with their murder. police say their son kevin is responsible for their deaths. the man's girlfriend is also charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

president obama criticismed this morning for deciding to send troops to syria. he claims the small number of troops does not require congressional approval. republicans are criticizing the deployment as insufficient and as they put it, too little, too late. happening today, helicopters are going to lift the hull of that downed military blimp that blooped in pennsylvania earlier this week. you remember these pictures. crazy, right? it's a billion dollar blimp that broke free of its moorings on wednesday. drifted about 150 miles and finally crashed near harrisburg, pennsylvania. the nose was lifted out of the woods yesterday. the reason that thing broke loose still under investigation.

sky cam live with a look at lower manhattan on this halloween morning. a beautiful day take shape. a little cool out there, 43 degrees. 8:10 now. it is one of the nation's largest halloween celebrations. hundreds of thousands will crowd greenwich village this evening for the parade. joining us is the master puppeteer puppeteer. good morning. happy halloween. i remember when sandy came through three years ago we didn't have the parade. the next year it was big they were back. i remember when those puppets came through they were cheering. it's been a remarkable journey. in your mind how do you think this parade has become sort of this iconic moment? >> i don't know. i mean, people love halloween.

and they love this -- it's kind of the last big hurrah before kind of the holidays and the winter sets in. so it's the last big hurrah, like maybe this is the last minute -- >> we can still hold onto warm weather. >> no. >> do you use the same puppets every year? >> we use a lot of the same ones. there's puppets that have been in the parade for decades. and then we always build some new ones every year. >> are there themes? will there be certain political candidates that would inspire you? >> this year the theme is shine a light. so there's these beautiful puppets that shine all these lights. they look like chandeliers. >> do you work on this all year? do you get any time off?

people who work on the parade. and so the organizer of the parade works all yearlong. at the end of the summer it takes a couple of months to really like ramp everything up and to build all the puppets. mostly what i do, i work this giant spider puppet which i've been doing for years. >> what does that mean? >> i have a giant spider that's hanging from the historic jefferson market library that's sort of looking over the parade. >> is that i'm looking at right there? >> yeah. >> so when the parade is going on, you're up in the tower? >> yeah. >> how many folks are required to manipulate that? >> it actually only takes one person. for me, the spider is for the participants in the parade. there is a couple hundred thousand people in the parade. and there's sometimes up to 2 million people who are watching the parade.

broccoli, theless you do be less you do, the better off you are. it doesn't take a lot of cooking. if you want to steam this, what you want to do is after you stream steam it, you actually want to put it in cold water and stop the cooking process. you never want to over cook. you never want to over cook broccoli. and this is even worse, the less you do, the better off you are. steam it for a minute to two minutes. when buying it, make sure the stems are nice and green. look at the top just like you do with broccoli. make sure it has no flower in it, that it doesn't start to flower. when it starts to flower, it
