there's a hostage situation unfolding right now mali's capital. this is after -nmen attacked a radisson hotel that is popular th foreigners. we know that president obama who is in malaysia right now on separate travel has been briefed by his national security adviser on this situation, and, of cource, tiis is all happening e week after those attacks in paris. we want to get right to nbc's ron mott following developments. ron, what can you tell us? >> reporter: hey, savannah, good morning to you. details are still thin at this hour but here's what we know. the hotel is o lockdown. some hostages have reportedly been freed.t the malian military is on scene and setting up a security perimeter around the hotel and may have already entered and the u.s. embassy is telling its staff and all americans in the area to shelter in place. c news has learned at least 150 people were taken hostage today at the radisson blu h el in mali's capital bamaco, according to a hotel spokesperson. cordwng to reports, there are at least ten gunmen and at least three people hav been kill. onbrts website the hotel said

140 guests and 30 employees were lodked in a room by hostage-takers. it is unknown whether any ericans are among those being held. it's also unclear which terrorist group is behind today's attack, the latest of them in a series of them this year in central and northern mali. in august at least 12 people were killed during another attack on a hotel used by united nations staff. this one about 400 miles northeast of the capital. french forces backed up the malian military in ending that assault which lasted 24 hours. now, according to the "new york times," the gunmen asked hostages if they could reside a is declaration of muslim faith. those who could reportedly were let grow. mali has grown increase ingly volatile in the past couple of years as civil unrest has spread with its mick militants gaining a foothold ie hat region. esident obama was briefed by national security adviser susan rice and told his team to keep him apprised of his developments and we can also tell you there were two airlines who are crew members in that hotel, one a

to become operation a. they have to go out and let them know that they are under investigation. >> how do the fbi decide who to track more closely or sursfal more closely, looking at social media, wire tapping? how do they find this group. >> a whole range of things that put somebody up as a priority. it's who is moving closer to becoming operationalle? are they talking about obtaining weapons? is their rhetoric becoming much more violent? are they associated with others who maybe have traveled overseas? the fbi wants to make sure they are focusing on highest priorities and the reality is there are too many of these people and they don't have all the resources. they have to use their best intelligence to focus you. >> talked a lot about the part that the public has in this in reporting anything that seems out of order or suspicious. i'm thinking about this female suicide bomber in france who not that long ago had a totally different life, was not devout, was out partying, according to reports and then one day she changed. should be reporting in. savannah.

the malian military is already on scene. they have secured the outside of the hotel. they have gone inside. still no word on whether they have made contact with the hostage-takers at this point. we can tell you also in the last few minutes francois hollande, the president of france, issued a statement. he had some remarks to sa and said in this hotel are important people from various nationalities. mali will have our support in solidarity and the french people mali need to turn to the french embassy for help and any other citizens need to be careful. president obama, as we reported earlier in this hour, has been briefed on this situation by the national security adviser susan rice and told the team to keep m apprised of developments. can tell you as of this moment that the death ll, confirmed death toll, is three. there have been a number of people who have escaped, including a couple of crews from airlines, turkish airlines and air france, air france s ying l 12 of its crew escaped, and they are all safe, and i do believe they are cancelling flights out of there for the time being.
