7:02 am
and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. and good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a monday morning, the start of a holiday week, and i have to say a lot of jitters in this country and around the world. >> unfortunately, that's a part of these holidays. sometimes the nerves get ratcheted up especially in light of what's happened overseas. >> new round of raids overnight in belg as police hunt for the alleged paris attacker salah abdeslam, but so far he has managed to evade them. we're going to talk to secretary kerry in just a moment, but first nbc's chief global correspondent bill neely is in brussels, bill, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, matt. brussels hasn't seen so many armored vehicles and troops on its streets since world war ii. the terror threat level here couldn't be higher, 22 raids overnight in this city and in a city of charloix but the isis militant, the man they are
7:03 am
looking for, is still free. the heart of brussels, normally packed with tourists and commuters, now filled with armed police and troops. warning that an attack might be imminent, they moved in overnight to half a dozen districts. police here have been told to prepare for an anti-terror operation. this city is still on high alert. there were 22 raids in all, 16 people arrested. their main target was the belgium isis militant, salah abdeslam one the of the paris attackers who fled to the brussels area. they didn't get him. they fear he might have an explosive suicide belt. the man who drove him here said he had been wearing a thick jacket. his brother went on belgium tv to say he believed salah had pulled out of the paris attacks at the last minute. it's not my hope, he says. it's my belief. salah is clever. brussels is in lockdown for a third down. children aware of the terror threat.
7:04 am
>> they are afraid. children, they are crying. >> more aware of the danger than normally you. >> reporter: in paris, the french president visited the concert hall, scene of the deadliest attack, with britain's prime minister. the american band that were playing that night, eagles of death metal, have spoken for the first time in an interview about the fans who were killed. >> the killers were able to get in and kill every one of them except for a kid hiding under my jacket. people were playing dead and were so scared. a great reason why so many were killed is because so many people wouldn't leave their friends. >> the band and two cities today still reeling from the attacks. and, remember, this city is the headquarters of nato. some staff there have been told stay home. it's also the virtual capital of the european union, but it's also a city from where hundreds of fighters have left a fight for isis in syria so they have good reason here to be worried
7:05 am
about another terror tack. savannah, matt? >> all right, bill neely in brussels this morning, bill, thanks so much. >> an worries here, too. there's heightened security concerns as we ent they are thanksgiving week. police departments across the country making sure they are prepared just in case. nbc's stephanie gosk is in times square in new york city this morning. stephanie, good morning. >> hey, good morning, savannah there. may be some americans feeling a bit rattled as they get ready to travel for the holiday, but here in new york city they want -- law enforcement want to settle those nerves and also show that they aren't taking any chances. they invited the media to a mock active shooter, a drill, not that unlike the attack in paris, a chance for the police to prove that they are ready. an active shooter in a closed new york city subway, a scary thought, but this is just a drill. the nypd does a similar exercise for the media every year, but after the attacks in paris, this time there was a new twist. the shooter
7:06 am
er er with a suicide vest the drill comes days before the macy's thanksgiving day parade with an expected crowd of over 3.5 million. >> in new york city we are at this time very well prepared and continually improving that preparedness. but the idea is to get in and minimize the greatest degree possible the casualties. >> reporter: across the country many are feeling on edge. a statement claiming to be from the hacker group anonymous warned there may be a rash of isis attacks on sunday. >> whoa man. >> reporter: including at a wrestling event at phillips arena in atlanta. the group later denied releasing any information about a plot. the said there was no credible threat. fear in the sky as well with two international flights grounded in canada over the weekend. explosives were not found on either plane. and a southwest plane from indianapolis to l.a. was diverted to kansas city after the airline says several passengers exhibited suspicious behavior. >> i was really scared. i didn't know what was
7:07 am
happening. it was just kind of a rough experience i guess >> reporter: unruly passengers were questioned and then later released. on sunday president obama addressed possible growing fear in the u.s. while insisting isis will be destroyed. >> we do not succumb to fear. that's -- that's the primary power that these terrorists have over us. >> reporter: later this week, president obama will be meeting with french president francois hollande to talk about the international fight against terrorists, but here at home authorities are facing this evolving challenge and all the anxieties that go along with t.savannah? >> stephanie gosk, thank you so much. secretary of state john kerry is with us exclusive from abu dhabi. mr. secretary, good morning. let me ask you about the security situation here in the united states. administration officials have said there's no specific credible threat. on the other hand, officials in paris likely would have said the same thing the day before those attacks. how confident are you in assuring the american public
7:08 am
that there isn't a threat that is imminent? >> well, i can assure you that we don't have a specific threat stream or specific evidence in front of us, but there is always, as we've said to people for years, the threat of some actor, some lone wolf person, someone who slipped through. that's the world we're living in today, and we understand that. ever since 9/11 many experts across the united states, without regard to political party or to elections, have consistently said to us it's probably not a question of if. it's a question of when. >> well, let's talk -- >> now, we have every single effort being made by homeland security, by the fbi, by interpol, by intelligence communities to exchanging information, and people are working hard at this, and we have averted many different plots against the united states. >> let's talk about this
7:09 am
in recent days isis has managed to pull off attacks in paris, in beirut and brought down a russian jetliner. by definition, doesn't that just show that u.s. policy is not working, that there needs to be a better strategy? >> what it shows is that isil has not yet been defeated, and we understand that. regrettably for four years this war in syria has been going on and people have been traveling from all over the world to the amazement of many people, but they have been traveling even from the united states to go fight in syria. so some people have returned to their homelands, and they have been taught the trade craft of terror regrettably, so, no. we've only had the coalition against daesh for one year now. we put that coalition together a year ago when daesh started to move through the region. >> but mr. secretary --
7:10 am
that period of time about -- let me just finish -- about 25% of their territory that they controlled has been taken away from them. leadership has been eliminate the from the battlefield. whole towns and communities have been eliminated. the answer is no, it has to be picked up. the pace has to be picked up and more needs to be done, and everybody understands that. >> you know, picked up territory in other countries, they have expanded into other countries during this time that we've been fighting them. the president talks about his critics popping off and saying they have a better idea, but he's getting criticism from former members of his administration, leon panetta, the former cia director and defense secretary, hillary clinton, his former secretary of state, a top counterterrorism official in his administration michael vickers as well as dianne feinstein who is now the intel chair of the senate saying it's not sufficient.
7:11 am
it's not enough, and it's not happening fast enough. >> well, let me just say, look, i just said to you i don't think anybody believes it's happening fast enough. we're escalating our steps. the president even in the last weeks before paris took place made major decisions to put additional people on the grounds, special forces and took additional steps, some of which i can't talk about on the line here, but he has already been taking additional steps. now, yes, isil has brought in people in other countries. it hasn't expanded by moving to those other countries. it has taken terrorists who already exist in those other countries and they have pledged loyalty to daesh. that's different, and we know there are people who are terrorists in libya, in yemen, in afghanistan and other places. what daesh has succeeded in doing is attracting them because
7:12 am
of what they have been doing on the ground in syria and in iraq, and we have been focused on attacking them in syria and iraq, and i am convinced that will increase even more so in the days ahead. as i said to you, a year ago there was no coalition against daesh. >> in a word, sir, is isis gaining strength? >> i believe isis is going to be defeat the. isis is ten feet tall. i have absolute confidence that as we increase what we are doing today, as there is more focusing, i'm just in abu dhabi now. we've just had serious meetings here. i'm about to meet with the saudi arabians. there is a very clear focus by everybody. there is a united front, and i am absolutely convinced that daesh will be defeated and there will be increased steps taken in
7:13 am
order to do so, and what we need to do is not succumb to fear. people need to not panic. there is a strategy in place growing by the day, and i have no doubt whatsoever that with the help of all the nations that are united against daesh they are going to be defeated, and we're going to do everything in our power to hasten that journey. >> secretary of state john kerry, thank you for your time this morning. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> we should mention when secretary kerry says daesh, same as isil, same as isis, different names for the same thing. >> another term, exactly. >> interesting to hear what he had to say. the paris attacks are changing the conversation on the campaign trail where donald trump is stirring up another controversy, and this morning new poll numbers show he has a sizable lead in the republican race. nbc national correspondent peter alexander has more on this. peter, good morning. >> reporter: hi, matt, more evidence this morning that republican voters want change
7:14 am
over experience. for the fourth straight month they believe donald trump is the man for the job. the billionaire businessman viewed as the candidate best able to handle the economy, immigration and now the threat of terrorism, too. in the wake of the paris attacks, donald trump is only getting stronger, defiantly vowing to crack down on syrian refugees and american muslims. >> i don't want to close mosqueses. i want to surfail mosques. i want mosques surveilled >> reporter: heated rhetoric underscoring anti-islamic sentiments nationwide. a dozen protesters, some armed and masked lining up outside a texas mosque this weekend. trump, the gop front-runner, maintaining his ten-point lead over ben carson, according to a new national poll. marco rubio, the only other candidate in double digits, but as trump remains strong, once again controversy has followed. trump calling for a database of syrian refugees. >> we have no idea who these people are. when the syrian refugees are going to start pouring into this country.
7:15 am
we don't know if it's isis or a trojan horse. >> and trump wouldn't rule out a registry for all muslims in the u.s. and candidate john kasich said that's unacceptable successfully flat out reject the idea we have them register. >> reporter: and he suggested we bring back water bush boarding. >> water boarding is peanut compared to what they do to us. >> reporter: and defending his you be substantiate the claim, he saw thousands and thousands of people celebrating the destruction of the win twirs. >> they were cheering as the world trade center came down. >> reporter: police and city officials say there's no evidence that ever occurred. donald trump has stirred up another controversy by re-tweeting a racially charged image that compares black on black murders to police killings. a couple problems here. the figures are not acura. they overstate the number of
7:16 am
homicides committed by blacks, and the government agency that's listed there at the bottom, well, it's not actually an agency that anyone can say exists. matt and savannah. >> peter alexander on this story. peter, thank you very much. >> as we mentioned, this is a holiday week. nearly 42 million people expected to travel in the coming days so al, you're on. what's the weather going to be? >> one half of the country looking pretty good, the other half not so much. let show you what we got this past weekend. we told you about a big snow storm coming out of the west, and it blanketed the midwest and the upper midwest at well. chicago picking upwards of 20 inches of snow in the suburbs and more is on the way. before we get to that, look at all this cold air. there's some 29 million people under some sort of a frost or freeze watch or advisory. 0s as you get into the great lakes. even as far south as atlanta. 31 right now. 33 in mobile. tallahassee at 40 degrees. look at watches and warnings now stretching across from texas all the way to the southeast. that's going to continue through

7:44 am
and that's because they are going to have to get up and serve themselves buffet style right through here and notice something else. we've put out all the healthy foods as the first course. all the greens. experts say this group, group number two, will eat a lot less with these little tricks. let's see. >> i'm so hungry. let's eat. >> reporter: we send them in and right await if you have fet group is piling on the roasted vegetables and salad. >> everything looks delicious. >> reporter: they are getting full on the healthy stuff. >> i love broccoli rabe. >> reporter: by the time the main course comes out, the meats and starches, all the calorie busting dishes they don't take much, but just look what's happening in the other room where all the food is right there on the table. they are piling on the fatty stuff, digging deep into the mashed potatoes. >> anybody need gravy? >> reporter: heaping spoonfuls of mac and cheese. not many takers on the greens. how is it going, guys? >> good.

8:45 now. back with our annual tradition thanks and giving where we highlight the remarkable work and this morning marlo thomas opens up about how her father danny thomas started it all. >> here we go. >> my father founding st. jude's children's research hospital is a very personal story. he was a child of immigrant lebanese people. they had no money, and they grew up in a neighborhood where nobody went to the doctor. children in the neighborhood died of -- of appendicitis and influenza, and i think he care
8:40 am
>> he was a struggling young comedian without any money and had $10 in his pocket and his first baby was about to be born, me. and he -- he needed $50 to get me and my mother out of the hospital, and he went to mass that sunday, and the sermon was about st. jude. patron of the hopeless cases and he thought who could be more hopeful than me, so he took sench his $10 out of his wallet and put it in the basket and a little prayer we made was dear st. jude, i need ten times this to get my family out of the hospital. if you will help me and give me a sign i'm going in the right direction, some day i'll be able to do a shrine and next day he got a phone call to play a singing toothbrush on the radio, and the pay was $75. that was his sign. and then something else happened that really changed things for him. he read in the paper about an african-american 8-year-old boy who was hit by a car in mississippi and he died because
8:41 am
no emergency room in mississippi would take him. my father started to form the thought that he could build a hospital so that every child of every race and religion would have an equal chance at first class care. he put it in memphis which is the hub of the south, st. jude became the first fully integrated hospital in the south. you he wanted to create a place where no family would have to pay for travel, or food or housing or treatment. my mother's idea was to build a hospital to help children with hopeless diseases, but this wonderful progressive doctor said to him if you really want to help children, don't just build a hospital, danny, build a research center and a treatment center under one roof. >> i never thought i would live to see st. jude hospital built. >> when it started, it was only 100,000 square feet, and today it's 3 million square feet. my father told my sister and power and me that after he was gone st. jude would not be our

were relieved because it looked like a lot of look. three months after my daughter died i went to st. jude and i was emotional going out and i went inside, a party going on and all these little kids were running around and having a wonderful time and i said whose bird day is it? it's not a birthday party. it's an off chemo party. you don't need chemo anymore >> and i just started to cry. i've never seen anything like this. all these children deriving strength from one child's turn for the better and their parent standing by with tears in their eye because they felt that this child did and maybe their child would, too. it was a turn point for me and i knew right then that i would be involved. >> marlo thomas is with us now. good morning. >> good morning. >> if your father could see it now. >> well, it's amazing, that's a wonderful story about how we started, but just this past wednesday we treated the first

child ever with our proton beam with the smallest proton ever created on the planet at st. jude. means we can target cancer and not kill any of the good healthy tissue around it, and the other great thing is our genome project. every child that comes to st. jude has its genome mapped so we can treat that cancer and defeat that cancer and, therefore, any child who gets that cansler also have that same treatment. this is what's happening now. very exciting. you've been there. >> known each other for a long time. there's always something you say to people. come see it. >> yes. >> and it's amazing when you go through there how your view changes. >> you know, i was thinking as i watched this, in 1962 when my father opened the hospital, he would walk through those walls and almost every child would die, and now his daughter, 52 years later, almost every child that i meet in those halls will have the chance to live. what can be better than that? >> and there's no better advocate than you, marlo. thank you so much.

things to make us aware of. >> good to see you buddy. >> not a bad job. get to scour the internet and do fine the scams and many of us traveling this week with thanksgiving and wanted to get with you and tell you about a couple of hotel booking scams. one of them is, by the way, a shocking number. 15 million hotel bookings a year, according to the industry association are scams. 15 million are skamts. >> just to make it clear. third-party booking sites. >> third-party booking sites. think you're going on the hotel website. >> right. >> it's not really the hotel website because coming up on google sometimes these fakes can get themselves up higher. and so they will make themselves look that way and there are third-party organizations that come in and you'll book right through them. the things you want to do, number one, book with reputable companies whose names you've heard of and that means you should pick up the phone, legit -- a legit website wit0 have the phone number in the corner and call that phone number and advice i always give, always give, is pay with a credit card. >> yeah.
9:25 am
even because your debit card, that money comes out of your account, it's gone. credit card you request dispute and read the fine print for legitimate hotels to make sure if you cancel or change it and the third one is if you use a third-party booking site, a great piece of advice, pick up the phone just after you book it andcality hotel itself. call the front desk and say i want to make sure that you have that reservation >> the whole reason we go online is so we don't have to make all of these phone calls, but when you say 15 million people have been scammed. >> yeah. >> that's incredible. >> every single year. >> next one here, and this is amazing to me. i didn't even think that this happens but it does happen all the time is if you're in your hotel room and you get a call say from the front desk saying, hey, i need your credit card number again. it didn't go through. big red flashing right in. >> when you check into hotels and you guys travel all the time just like mow and just like you this week you walk up to the front desk, what's your name an checking in and as you're fiddling for the wallet, natalie morales, checking into the hotel.
9:26 am
listen to who is checking in and will call the front desk from their room and say connect me to natalie morales' room and when they pick up the phone, there's been a billing address and they give it over to the phone. >> oh, for some reason my card didn't go through. >> most people would never suspect something like that. >> and the other thing i want to get to, probably wondering why we have a safe hoefrmt put all your valuables in the safe, of course. tamron do me a favor. put your fine jewels in there. type in a personal code, won't even look at it. not looking, and tell me when it's closed. >> closed. >> so it's all locked. let me push this and have an override key and many hotels, a popular hotel safe come with a generic code and a lot of the hotels don't change it so watch this, it's open. i have no idea what your code is. >> that's crazy.
9:27 am
>> for this particular safe it's a lot of zeros, also something else that they can do. they can screw this off right here and there's a master key for safes. >> close it again. >> do whatever you want. >> pick a random number. >> okay. >> it's closed. okay. watch this. i put this right in here, turn that to the right. >> and it opens. >> this is helpful obviously p. obviously. >> if hotels are watching, go reprogram your codes. >> what do we do in. >> front desk has security boxes and put your stuff in there. don't leave it in the safe. >> that's safer then. >> jeff rossen, thanks so much. >> great information. >> i've learned a lot. >> okay. >> coming up next, we're going to go a little bit country in the kitchen with a thanksgiving side dish from little big when the flu hits, it's a really big deal. the aches. the chills.
