>> i'm craig melvin with dylan dreyer. sheinelle is spending another morning at home. she's under the weather. it's iowa caucus eve. >> i like to make it fancier. that is our top story. we're 35 hours from the first caucuses caucuses. there's new polling from the des moines register. that is often a good indicator how the caucuses will go in that state. donald trump has five points ahead of ted cruz in that polling. hillary clinton three points ahead of bernie sanders. yod liu measure the margin of error. they're basically neck and neck. we have null full analysis this morning. halle is covering in des moines. >> good morning, erica. for donald trump, this poll represents a 15-point turn around since december. but nearly half of the likely republican caucus-goers say even now they could still be convinced to change their minds. if they do, it's ted cruz who
9:03 am
>> flying high for now. it's donald trump on top the day before the caucuses in iowa. >> donald j. trump. >> where the latest poll shows he leads ted cruz by five points. >> the numbers were so good for me, which i'm happy about. >> but trump's turnout will matter more monday night. >> it all doesn't matter if you don't caucus on monday. >> his closest rival here, ted cruz, says he has volunteers making 20,000 phone calls to potential caucus-goers. >> we're wanting to know if we can count you to caucus for cruz on monday. >> each though cruz has slid recently. a sign trump's attacks may be working. the most effective one according to new polling, not on his canadian birthplace. >> he borrowed a lot of money, as you know, from goldman sachs and from citi bank. >> but that cruz failed to fully disclose his loans from big banks.
9:04 am
like his support for eminent domain domain. >> cruz had been hitting him on that. >> this race is a dead heat. it is neck and neck. now, it is effectively a two-man race. >> marco rubio would beg to differ. >> we look forward after we're done here to get to new hampshire and working there as well. >> his campaign appearing pleased with rubio's place with pole position. ahead of the established candidates. even as rubio down plays talk, he could surprise with a second place finish. >> on his bus describing a sense of urgency as the countdown to the caucuses gets closer. >> i'm confident when this process is finished an the delegates are counted, we're going to have more than half the delegates and be the republican nominee. >> this morning, donald trump is taking to twitter to hit ted cruz for mailers the campaign sent out with the words, voting violation on them. something cruz was scolded for by the iowa secretary of state. the cruz campaign points out
9:05 am
practice to get people out to the caucus. so were the ones used in the past. the bottom line about all of this, guys, both campaigns know turnout will be the key to winning tomorrow night. >> they do. halle jackson for us had morning. thanks. the race is a parentally so close for the democrats, no one is sure what will happen tomorrow. nbc's krit ken continue welker has more on that. >> good morning to you. the democratic race is anyone's to win here in iowa. secretary clinton has a slight lead but note taking anything for granted and bernie sanders isn't letting up. >> the democratic candidates crisscrossing iowa late into the night on saturday with just hours to go. for hillary clinton, it was all hands-on deck. >> i am so proud to support my mom. >> she is the single best change maker i have ever known. >> husband bill and daughter chelsea helping to deliver the final pitch.
9:06 am
thank you, chelsea. >> clinton is entering the homestretch with a boost. saturday's des moines register, bloomberg poll shows her with a slim lead over rival, bernie sanders, 45 to 42%. the new york times endorsed her calling her one of the broadly and deeply qualified in history. >> i hope we'll be able to persuade you to join us to make progress for our country. >> earlier in the day, clinton tried to turn the page after the state department determined 22 e-mails from the former secretary of state's private server were top secret. clinton telling nbc news she didn't generate them. >> this is an inner agency dispute. it's playing out in public. i want it resolved. >> senator sanders with excitement, buoyed by young voters who support him. >> people said it was a fringe campaign. doesn't look like a fringe
9:07 am
>> and now, the battle being waged in campaign war rooms. clinton and sanders have both built up armies of volunteers ready to fight, determined to win. >> i haven't seen this excitement in so long. there's got to be something about this crazy old guy, right? >> we're here to help democrats and to hopefully get hillary clinton elected president. >> reporter: now, senator sanders could win iowa if young voters turn out in force as they did in 2008 for then senator barack obama. he won that group here by a margin of about 4 to 1. sanders and clinton have another relentless day of campaigning that will last late into the night. craig, erica, back to you. >> force in des moines today. kristen, thank you. chuck today is moderator of meet the press and is also in iowa this morning. chuck, good morning. >> well, good morning, erica. >> there's so much talk about donald trump. we see this new polling that came out last night. the big unknown is how many people will show up. now, we've been hearing from our
9:08 am
trump campaign making this push to remind people how to register and vote. is that having an impact? >> we don't know. we haven't seen the evidence of somehow an up-turn in voter registration on either side. high voter turnouts are -- with the republicans. i've talked to these first-time caucus-goers. i understand why the other campaigns are skeptical. the cruz campaign believes they're going to win and believes they're still ahead. because they're very skeptical of these first-time caucus-goers. i've talked to them in the trump lines. some of them have not voted in any election in 20 years. so that's why the skepticism is there. you think, boy, are they going to get up, go through the process, make sure they get to the caucus location on time. you can get there at a specific time or they lock the door and you can't get in. so trump's whole reliance is on a bunch of people who have never done this before. >> chuck, turn to the democrats now. what does the second place
9:09 am
iowa mean for his campaign moving forward? >> i think it means that he will be a tough challenger for hillary clinton. but it's hard to imagine how he could ever overtake her. look, i think you can't sort of make the democratic nomination fight a true one-on-one battle that's neck and neck the whole time if he can't knock her off here. because if he can't beat her here, then outside of new hampshire hampshire, where else will he beat her? if he's going to inroads in south carolina, nevada and other states, he's got to get democrats convinced that wow, he pulled an upset there in iowa. he came from out of nowhere there. new hampshire is one thing. that's his next door state. but pulling it off here, i think, could catapult him. he almost -- it's a must win for sanders to be honest. >> what's the headline tuesday morning? what are we talking about tuesday morning after the caucuses are over? >> well, if it's -- we're going to be talking about donald trump.
9:10 am
everything is always -- it's donald trump's world. we're lucky to live in it sometimes. no. it will be about whether trump's for real or not, craig. if he wins, it's panic time for real for the republican establishment because i think he's going to be very hard to stop. but if he loses, then all of a sudden that seed of doubt is planted into whether the trum phenomenon was all a mirage. >> so much to look forward to, right? it's going to be a busy, what did we say, 35 hours or so. chuck, thanks. >> 35 hours. >> counting. >> i'll be sedated. >> that comes on tuesday morning. we'll have more -- we'll look for more from you on "meet the press." chuck's guests include ted cruz, marco rubio and bernie sanders. just a reminder, "today" has you covered on caucus day. we will be live from iowa tomorrow morning. dylan, the other headline on tuesday morning could be whether or not they get the snow in iowa. >> it could be a blizzard on
9:11 am
that could make for interesting run-ins at the airport. a lot of people could get stuck starting monday night. through the day on monday, we're going to see just the increasing clouds. temperatures across the state will be running in the upper 30s. lower 40s. everything is fine. then we get into monday night and tuesday. that's when the blizzard warning kicks in. notice the southeast part of the state. not under the blizzard warnings. that's where we'll most likely see rain. if you head south, you should be able to make flights. in you're in the des moines area anywhelady across central and northern iowa, we're looking at very gusty winds. perhaps as much as 9 to 12 inches of snow. waterloo looks like one of the areas where we'll see the jackpot. we're going to see interesting conditions, especially as we go into monday night and tuesday. that's kind of the time frame where we are going to see our worst conditions as far as snow is concerned. >> dylan x thanks. to california now. three dangerous criminals are back in jail after escaping last week. the final two were captured

9:14 am
>> it was quite shocking to see that she would have any part of it. >> the three inmates and the teacher may find themselves on the same side of the law and behind bars. >> reporter: officials with the sheriff's department hearsay there hasn't been a jail break in more than 30 years. that they've already made significant improvements to the jail's security system. meanwhile, the inmates captured this weekend expected to be back here in orange county later on this morning. craig? >> steve patterson for us this morning in santa ana, california thank you. in denver, a fight between rival biker gangs turned into a deadly brawl outside the colorado motorcycle expo. one person was shot and killed. one person was stabbed as the violence escalated. eyewitnesses describe dozens of people fighting, just before the gunfire began. police are keeping a heavy presence at the hospital where the injured are being treated to prevent further confrontations.
