bay area with super bowl 50 about ten hours away. it's the broncos versus the panthers. could peyton manning end his tohall of fame career with a win? will nfl mvp cam newton steal the spotlight. kicking it off overnight, beyonce dropping a surprise new single and video just hours be bifore her super bowl halftime performance. there's so much on the line and it all happens today. sunday, february 7 ft, 2016. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. welcome to "today," i'm craig melvin. i'm sheinelle roberts. dylan is in santa clara outside levi's stadium where we're finally here. super bowl 50 will be played in
9:03 am
hey, dylan. as if that's not exciting enough, beyonce has a new video. impeccable timing. >> she planned that perfectly. she can do no wrong. check out this video. blue ivy makes an appearance. i think she steals the show >> the video is incredible. >> all hail queen bee. >> there's a rumor she'll be performing that song tonight at the super bowl. we'll see. >> builds up to the moment. she knows what she's doing. >> dylan, we'll come back to you in a bit. let's get to the top story. that, of course the fireworks in last night's republican debate. many on the stage setting their sights on marco rubio. but no one seemed to be spared by the end of the night. we've got full coverage on both sides. but let's start with katy tur covering the republicans. katy, good morning. >> good morning, craig. last night it came down to experience as the republican governors took the frontrunners to task. none more so than marco rubio
9:04 am
and is now on his heels. >> the grand old party which at first looked more like the grand old pile-up with miscues and forgotten candidates. >> yes, we'll introduce john kasich. >> marco rubio repeated the same debate. that barack icama esn't know what he's doing. >> anybody that doesn't believe he knows what he's -- >> a target on his back, rubio gave christie the opening he needed arguing the freshman senator has no depth. >> marco, the thing is this. when you're president of the united states, when you're governor of a state, the memorized 30-second speech where you talk about how great america is at the end of it doesn't solve one problem for one person. snow. >> christie, your state was hit
9:05 am
they had to shame you to go back and you stayed there for 36 hours and then he left and came back to campaign. >> back on the debate stage and donald trump. the front-runner needing a win with you getting repeated boos bush. >> let me talk. quiet. out of -- a lot of time -- [ boo'ing ] >> that's all of his donors and special interests out there. >> lsz also missing a major opportunity on immigration as senator ted cruz owned the idea of a wall. >> we're going to build a wall, triple the border patrol and increase and actually since donald enjoyed that, i will simply say i've got somebody in mind to build it. >> though trump tried to turn the advantage in ay. >> i o hied it. because as soon as i looked at him, the whole room cracked up. they understand it. that's my issue.
9:06 am
out in front of voters today making their final pitch for the final push. >> as for the crowd makeup. you heard donald trump allude to that a moment ago. the rnc tells us that just 75 of the 1,000 seats were for its donors. it is a big day today. a big day tomorrow. no time but bad headlines. chuck todd is moderator of meet the press and also in manchester this morning. chuck, good morning to you. >> good morning, sheinelle. >> let's talk about the big headline last night. rubio hit by rivals, in particular chris christie. did the debate put a serious dent into rubio's electability argument? will this have an effect? >> i do think it has an impact here. this is a very fluid situation here in new hampshire. 's not clear -- it's a jumble between second and sixth place. about the only thing agrees on is that donald trump is ahead.
9:07 am
i think rubio had momentum. what was amazing last night about his performance is that everybody was telegraphing that rubio was going to be the target and he seemed wholly unprepared. chris christie had been telegraphing his hits on rubio for two days. it was as if he hit a brick wall that he never saw coming. that's what makes, i think, rubio's performance even ore troubling to perhaps some potential supporters. >> let's talk about this. looking forward to new hampshire, analysts say there's not one but threein tickets to be punched at new hampshire. you have trump and cruz on one side on the far right and the establishment candidate. as you mentioned for a long time people thought, perhaps it's going to be rubio. is he damaged? who would the establishment candidate be now? >> well, look, i think it's possible you have such a jumble between second and fifth, you could have a scenario where trump is sitting at 30% and then second through fifth is something like 17, 16, 15, 14,
9:08 am
so the point is, if it's that jumbled, which i think last opportunity for a result like at, well then who gets out? there may not be an incentive to get out. we may think we know the role it was going to play and win the establishment candidate, that instead we move to south carolina and south carolina becomes the primary that essentially separates the rubio, kasich bush part of the primary. that's where we find out who becomes the chief challenger to cruz and trump. >> you cannot write this. itn is compelling all the way ong. chuck, stay right there. >> it really is. quite a drama. >> we'll talk about the democrats and come back to you. let's turn to kristen welker following the race between hillary clinton and bernie sanders. kristen, good morning. sheinelle, good morning to yohiu. senator sanders has a big lead orin new hampshire fueled by the younger voters. he took a break from the campaign trail to have a little

k appearance on sanl alongside host larry david who does that spot-on impression of him. it will undoubtedly only energize the younger supporters as well. snl a popular stop for candidates. take a look at this memorable scene when they acted out what it would be like to be on the titanic. >> i am so sick of the 1% getting this pre rential treatment. enough is enough. we need to unite and work together if we're all going to get through this. >> sounds like socialism to me. >> democratic socialism. >> what's the difference? >> some big laughs there. senator sanders will be back on the campaign trail here in new hampshire today. meanwhile, secretary clinton will be off of the trail.
9:10 am
the site of that water crisis impacting so many african-americans. that's a visit which could resonate in early voting states with large african-american communities like south carolina. clinton is trailing sanders by double digits and most polls behave been trying to close that gap. courting younger voters and rallying women who prefer sanders by a slim margin here in new hampshire. she's touting women's right and calling in her husband's secretary of state, madeleine albright to campaign with her and trying to paint senator sanders as being weak on foreign policy. while secretary clinton is in flint, her husband, former pridt bill clinton, will be here campaigning for her. sheinelle, back to you. >> kristen welker, thanks. let's bring in chuck again. let's talk about this. by all appearances, bernie will win new hampshire. the clinton campaign making the argument, he's from a neighboring state and lowering expectations. can you put this in perspective.
9:11 am
was the presumptive nominee. now, this is the first in the nation primary that she can lose. how big of a deal is this? ro>> i still think it's a big deal given the clinton's heatory in new hampshire. they saved bill clinton's campaign previously. it pro lodged the fight in 2008. to g bmown out here, yes, neighboring senators and governors have had an advantage in new hampshire through the years. there's no doubt that she's not the favorite here. but to get blown out, t lose by double digits, i think would be not just disappointing but could give momentum to sanders, arguably where you have some other democrats who just assumed clinton was going to be their candidate who take a second look at sanders. that said, i think if clinton can get this within single digits, make the r e more competitive, then that could take a little bit of air out of
9:12 am
>> chuck, thanks a lot. much more on "meet the press" this morning when you sit down ch with hillary clinton, bernie sanders and donald trump. stick with today for full primary coverage. we'll be live from new hampshire on pamary tuesday. now to the other big story of the day, of course. that's the big name at 6:30 eastern tonight. it is super bowl 50. the panthers against the broncos at levi's stadium. in just a moment we'll talk to bob costas from nbc sports about thofe game, about the hgh allegations against peyton manning as well. let's star with dylan dreyer who has had a really tough assignment this week. dylan, good morning to you again. >> you know, i'm not getting a whole lot o sleep. at times, it is tough. >> that's because you're at all the parties. >> i know. that's the problem. it really has been an amazing week here in the bay area. we have had thousands of people flying in to this area and the rich and famous, of course, flying in on private jets. about 1500 private jets.
9:13 am
i've been to and concerts and nho honors awards last night. only one thing left to do. play the game. >> play physical. >> finally, super bowl sunday, the big questions will be answered. is it the crowning achievement of peyton manning's legacy or the start of cam newton's? this could be manning's last game. >> looking forward to playing in this game and then deal with the other stuff after this. >> or a chance to silence newton's critics who say he's too brash. >> people want to judge and ave their own own opinion on things that i don't have control over. >> will it be a hollywood ending fo the panthers michael oher of blind side fame now charged with protecting cam's blind side. >> they've made my job easier because they're playing great. >> five-point favorites for the panthers. one sure thing. that game ticket is going to cost you. >> about 4500 each.
9:14 am
stopped fans from coming. last night thousands turned away from a super bowl city jammed to capacity. >> even of the halftime entertainment has people buzzing. beyonce dropped a new video yesterday ahead of the game. but the internet has been snarkier with coldplay. better halftime shows. >> it's a blast but it' crazy all at the same time. >> last night, the stars traded turf for red carpet at the nfl nors awards. football's biggest night before its biggest san francisco 49er anquan boldin was named man of the year. >> i can help as many people as possible. >> now there's just one more prize left to award. the lombardi trophy. >> i'm excited for him. i'm rooting for him. i'll be a little nervous tomorrow once game time starts up. >> and by nhl honors awards, i meant nfl. this is football. when i was tg king to eli

9:16 am
investigation into the hgh allegations. peyton manning vehemently denying using performance en harrsing drugs. could this tarnish is legacy? >> i know some people say the media will decline anything -- not only because he's b n a great player but carried himself wi ath suh class and goodnat.re in every way thath irtually everyone likes and respects him. we're not naive, we know that performance enhancing drugs have been a part of sports for a couple of generations or more. the nfl is right to investigate this. just as major league baseball is investigating the baseball players romed in the al jazeera report. as it stands now, the sole source has ee recanted the allegations, they have no or corroboration.
9:17 am
anything beyond what we now know, i think, is unfair. ifed it is left where it presently stands, which is to say that they find nothing beyond this, i don't think it damages peyton's legacy. >> let's talk about cam newton, that panthers quarterback. 6'5", built like a linebacker. arm like a cannon. he's caught flack for those sometimes lengthy touchdown celebrations. what do you think that cam newton has so many haters, bob? >>de it may not be everybody's cup of tea. a lot of that is generational. the dab dance and everything else. look, he is, a, a terrific player. this is unlikely to be the only super bowl in which he plays. he is so a charismatic. it's not just that he's having fun and bringing his teammates along for the ride. even in the press conferences, that smile, that presence that he has, he's good for league. he's part of the next generation of nfl stars.
9:18 am
big fan of prognostications or speculating. >> because youe always wrong. what's the point? >> if you had to put money on this, who wins tonight? >> well i think if these two teams were to play ten times on a neutral field, carolina wins six or seven. and if the game is a blowout, it's almost certainly carolina that blows denver out rather than the other way around. but there are lots of scenarios by which you could see denver winning this game. if they do, i think it would be a close one. i'll leave you also with this observation as we all await be hayonce. i think the first couple of super bowls that i covered, craig, the halftime was up with people and the new christy things have changed. >> yes. >> thanks for waking up so early my friend. >> who says i ever went to sleep. >> fair enough. >> see you bob. now to an international situation sheeting up this morning. the united nations security council is meeting today to discuss a controversial rocket
