see you next time, folks. hello everybody. this is "early today." we want to begin with breaking news at this hour. several people dead and more wounded following an explosion at brussels airport at belgium and reports of multiple casualties p. casualties. the number of dead and wounded is unknown at this hour. it's too early to tell if it was terrorism or an accident. but we understand that the

that the building is being evacuated and flights have been canceled. confirming that two explosions did occur and they're asking people to not to come to the airport. we're hearing word of explosions at the curb departure at the belgium airport there in brussels and we are following this story and will continue to bring more information as it becomes available to us. and want to tell you about a big announcement on the hotly contested iphone case. apple 's help may not be needed afterall. they said an outside party demonstrated a possible method for opening the phone that belonged to syed farook. the fbi can determine if the work around might damage the phone's data. this comes as a surprise. investigator's originally insisted only apple could help unlock the phone.

dara brown. beg sunny federal police tell nbc news that there were two explosions one at the curb departure area of the american airlines terminal which is the international section departure hall one at the brussels airport. there are obviously emergency crews on the scene. there have been multiple casualties although there is only one confirmation that one person has been killed in this explosion. the airport has been closed. planes have been diverted. there have been cancellations set out. people have been told do not go to the airport. do not come to the airport at all people -- you can see the pictures have been sent out into the tarmac as security forces

figure out what is going on here. right now, we have kelly cobiella on the phone to brussels right now. >> reporter: we're hearing new reports out of belgium media that have not been confirmed there were reports fired inside that airport shortly before the explosion. this coming from belgian media. nbc news has not independently confirmed that. these two blasts that we're hearaling happened an hour and a half ago now, they happened very close to the departure area. there are pictures -- multiple pictures and video on social media showing people wounded in the departure area. glass blown -- windows blown into the airport. smoke rising. passengers running. some people said that they heard

people were dazed, shocked it's not yet clear, dara, how many people are injured. we do are confirmation that at least one person has been killed and there is thinking there is some kind of terrorist attack. however police in belgium have not confirmed that. they say it's too early. there are emergency crews on the scene. they're trying to get to the area, take care of the wounded. the area has been evacuated. we should mention this comes four days after the arrested abdeslam, from the pairs ris attacks. there can be reports that perhaps this was in brussels following his arrest. again, this is not being confirmed that it is terrorist attack, but that is the thinking, that is the assumption
