>> how can you push your kids to do their best on the playing field without putting too much pressure on them, and getting other parents angry at you? >> amy is the author of "the me, me, me epidemic" and a child and family psychologist. hi, guys. >> good morning. >> i'm perfectly okay with my kids to be average. average at sports. average -- i mean, they're exceptional, and maybe that's why i think that and i'm their mother. but tell us how we can teach competition to kids and what age we talk about. >> kids are going to be competitive naturally. it's part of the human condition. i think what's important is what you value. do you place value on winning? if that's the case, the child is always going to think that's the measure of success. if they don't win, are you going to be disappointed? or do we place value on working hard, putting it all out on the field, the teamwork, encouraging others? if we put the emphasis there, it's a nice way to balance our natural, competitive instinct.
10:40 am
not that this is my personal therapy hour, but i have a picture of my son -- >> lay it down. >> a couple years ago, the first big competition, i have a 6-year-old, and we put him in a pony riding competition. my husband volunteers to run horses. i was terrified because this was his first race. so this is my husband. pulling my son. >> huge. >> look at my little guy. i'm screaming. can i it will you, this is the happiest i've ever seen him. even to this day. i was so worried if he lost, how he was going to act. he won! he was so excited. here's why i brought this up. because the next time he lost, and he was devastated. >> right. >> plays soccer now. i love my child. he's a little genius, but he doesn't like to lose. >> most of us don't, right? amy referred to the fact, we have a survival of the fitness instinct. we want to get to the top of the food chain.
10:41 am
that losing with grace is really important. saying good game to the guy when you lose to them. or even when you win. you don't want to win and shove it in their face, you don't want to lose and be a bad loser. validating how hard it is to lose, and not everybody can be the winner. that's okay. the next time, you'll try again. what were you wroud proud of in that moment? focus on the effort and things they felt good about. it turns losing into an experience to learn from. >> i think we learn, obviously, from our parents. the reason i'm not pushing mila to be some star is because my parchts s parents didn't do that to me. she's in ballet and gymnastics. she's great and likes it. most importantly, she has fun. >> awe, so cute. >> looks good in a tutu. that's why we do it, because of the smile. i'm nervous about the competition stage. we're not there yet. where parents yell. what can i do as a mom to kind of bring down that sort of

10:43 am
>> sometimes not during the game, but maybe setting up a time after the game, when all the heat is off, sit down and have a conversation and say, when you do that, i know it doesn't motivate our kids. it is amotivating. doesn't get them exciting. praising them, validating them gets them excited. telling them what idiots are, oh, my gosh. you. >> we can talk about this forever. thank you so much. >> thank you. still ahead, we'll talk to serayah about starring in her own music after for naturally beautiful hair, discover the wholesome goodness of new whole blends shampoos and conditioners by garnier. the sweetness of honey and royal jelly... the freshness of coconut water and vanilla milk. whole blends. paraben-free haircare. carefully-selected ingredients in formulas made to nourish deeply, hydrate, and repair.
