>> i've always said it. i believe it. the greatest at everything. playing, right ing writing, composing, everything. the masculinity, he can take your girl wearing high heels. >> we take for granted in a way his music now and this sound. take us back there. this was so pioneering. >> in the beginning, when i first learned about prince, you know, he was like the blueprint for how do you make it in music for young musicians like us. i mean, the idea that somebody could play rock, somebody could play funk, someone could play jazz, folk, you know, all at the same time, blues, and yet make commercial hit records, it was remarkable. >> his former style -- i'm stealing this -- but his former stylist said this yesterday.

well, about music but music issues. he broke from a record company over ownership and rights. he changed his name to a symbol and wrote the word "slave" on his face during a concert. where did that come from? >> he was a business genius as much as a musical genius. like a steve jobs in a way. i don't know, man. it was just -- you know, he talked about everything from compulsory license, you know, to like you said, breaking contracts to ownership of publishing. created ways of selling music. i think he was the first artist -- i'm sure he was -- that would sell cds with his tickets. his tickets would go crazy. it would cause his records to go up on the charts. every time he played a show, his album went to number one. just a genius. >> you touched on it a second ago. i, by the way, always considered you to be an incredibly fashionable guy.

>> it was incredible. there was a feminine fashion thing going on, right? with a guy who was like, you know, you don't want to bring your girl around prince. >> we talk about him and what a musical prodigy he was. it's one thing to be a virtue great in anything, but he played every instrument, wrote every lyric, produced the songs. >> that's right. >> give us a sense of what that means, how hard that is. >> that's the most difficult thing. first of all when you're playing every instrument, that means you're playing them one at a time. you're performing -- like you're putting the drum track down first and playing the entire song while hearing it in his head. then lay the bass, then lay the piano and then lay the guitar and the background vocals and lead vocals and strings. it's impossible. no one can do this.

unusual, most of the times, you become a musical sensation, you go to l.a. or come to new york or a motown guy. he stayed in minneapolis. >> he did a record at a l.a. plant. he said one time the phone rang and he answered and it was chaka khan. that's how he met her. he was doing a phone prank. he didn't move. never left minneapolis. he was in new york a lot, always here. >> still doing tons of live shows. always a performer. >> listen, he would do a live show for three hours and then leave and go to a club that night, same night. you never seen anyone quite like this. >> not to end on a downer, did you have any clue things were wrong with him health wise? >> the thing that really bothers me about it is the prince i know

i remember asking you, i said, could you say something to yourself in the mirror? it was the last week of shooting. we were overscheduled five days. it was very difficult. we said, we're just going to shoot the scene. locked the door so our assistant director wouldn't get in. he started improvising it. he kept saying, are you talking to me? sort of at his feet in the mirror, in front of him. he just kept repeating it. shot a ton of footage on it. he said, we have to get out of here. i said, this is good. another minute. he went on a roll. >> you talking to me? i'm the only one here. >> it was like a jazz record, like a solo. >> what'd you say? >> what do you think? >> did you know it would follow you around for 40 years after the movie came out? >> no. you never know with any of that stuff. we just did it.

difficult episode for you. it was because of this role that john hinckley became obsessed with you, i think. he went on to try to assassinate ronald reagan. it thrust you into a spotlight at a very young age for all the wrong reasons. >> right. >> how did it impact you? >> it's a part of history that there is no reason to comment on. the movie -- it's been 40 years for the movie, so probably 35 years and a lot of work. it's a chapter in history. we've all done bigger and greater things with our lives. >> so last question i'll give to you. 40 years later, is it gratifying to know that you can put this movie on next door and fill a theater with it, and people still come out and care about it that much? >> it's beyond that. i honestly thought it was a film made because we simply -- we couldn't go on living without making it.

died yesterday at just 57 years old. we'll be paying tribute to his life, legacy, music all morning long. it was one of those things, you hit your phone and go no. >> you couldn't believe it. for somebody who is so ageless, i couldn't believe he was 57 years old. >> i had the same reaction. >> he would have been 58 in a couple months. i thought, i'm three years older than prince? how is that possible? >> i did the math backwards. 57, that means he was only 22, 23 years old when he was putting out these revolutionary, iconic records in the early '80s, "1999" and "purple rain." natalie is outside his paisley park home and studio in suburban minnesota minneapolis. >> you can see people continue to come here. they are paying tribute, leaving along memorabilia to honor prince. there are still more questions than answers this morning as to the cause of his death. he was found dead inside of his

the recording studio. it was about 9:43 a.m. when he was found unresponsive. a short time later, he was pronounced dead at the age of 58 57. there is an autopsy schedule frd d for later today. could take weeks before the results are back. his rep is claiming prince was battling the flu for weeks. he had cancelled concerts a few weeks ago. last week, he performed what would be his last concert in atlanta. then on his return flight home from that concert, his plane was forced to make an emergency landing in illinois. he was hospitalized briefly, then he was released. a couple of hours later. the circumstances of his death, still very unclear. what is certain, as you all have been talking about all morning long, is a profound impact he has had on his fans. i was able to speak to some outside of the first avenue

he filmed "purple rain," and where they're celebrating his life and legacy all weekend long. >> i've been here my whole life. i was raised on prince, my parents. we lived down the street where where he got married. it was exciting to be here and be part of the history. >> i used to play in a funk band. we did prince covers. i have a special place in my heart for prince. had to make it out. >> maybe not ours as much as he is the generation that came before us, but any of us who can appreciate good music can understand how good prince is. >> how good he was, indeed. we talk about his musical genius. if you think about it, at the age of 12, prince had taught himself how to play 20 instruments. he, of course, would then go on to win seven grammys, sell over 100 million records worldwide. he never really stopped working. you know, or performing in the last 18 months, he released four

writing his memoir, "the beautiful ones," scheduled to be released in 2017. i think this morning, a photo that is resonating, and certainly touching people everywhere, was taken a few hours after news of his death here in paisley park. is this beautiful rainbow. it lit up the skies over his recording studios over the skies, as if sending a signal to the heavens, that another legend tragically gone way too soon. >> beautiful shot. natalie, thanks so much. she talked about all the work he'd been doing up to his death. there is this thing they call the vault. in his studio, he reportedly has yean years worth of music he never released. hopefully we'll get to hear that. >> constantly being creative and producing more. >> i wonder who will control that music. >> right. >> he was very, very controlling about that. >> yup. >> what happens now? it'll be interesting. of course, movies, he won an oscar for "purple rain."

i'll show you. i like 2-inch thick pork chops but that's another story. take a couple of -- like three cups of water and a cup of quinoa. pour it on in there. you're going to bring it in a simmer. just under a little bit of a boil. then take it to a simmer. put the pot on and it'll take 15 minutes to cook. it absorbs all the water. once it happens, you can throw in butter, clives and a little salt and a pepper and let it sit. fluff it with a fork and it's great. you go to the pork chops. again, a little olive oil, little salt, little pepper on each side. you're going to put these in a hot skillet. if you have a cast iron skillet, it's the greatest invention. >> i don't have one. it's the one thing i don't have. >> these are going to cook quickly. you only want them to cook two minutes per side. these have been in. you flip them over.

over, throw in a little rose rosemarry. rosemar rosemary. flash the garlic. >> the amount of flavor coming out of the pork chops right now -- >> i'll tell you about the cauliflower. it's one of the great vegetables. this will take about an hour. you start it early and go do something else. basically, core it from the bottom, brush it with olive oil, salt and pepper. put it in the oven. >> what pan do you put it in? >> a cast iron skillet, a baking pan, whatever. put it in the oven at 375 for an hour. it comes browned out like that. >> it's all you have to do? >> that's it. >> real flavor to it. >> roasting a cauliflower is one of the great things that most people don't realize how good it tastes. especially when you roast it. take these out. then you've got this leftover -- some olive oil and the garlic and the rosemary. >> bring it over.
