writing his memoir, "the beautiful ones," scheduled to be released in 2017. i think this morning, a photo that is resonating, and certainly touching people everywhere, was taken a few hours after news of his death here in paisley park. is this beautiful rainbow. it lit up the skies over his recording studios over the skies, as if sending a signal to the heavens, that another legend tragically gone way too soon. >> beautiful shot. natalie, thanks so much. she talked about all the work he'd been doing up to his death. there is this thing they call the vault. in his studio, he reportedly has yean years worth of music he never released. hopefully we'll get to hear that. >> constantly being creative and producing more. >> i wonder who will control that music. >> right. >> he was very, very controlling about that. >> yup. >> what happens now? it'll be interesting. of course, movies, he won an oscar for "purple rain."
9:05 am
>> i just thought for me, 1984, i was 9 years old and becoming conscious of music. michael jackson's "thriller" was the same year. then "purple rain." you had michael and prince doing their thing in different ways. "when doves cry." you can pick a ton of songs off the movie. that was his project, from the movie itself to the music behind it. again, he was 24, 25 years old when he did all that. >> amazing. >> it wasn't that long ago, 2014, on "saturday night live," they let him play for eight minutes, which is, in the world of "saturday night live," unheard of, to let a musical guest keep going. how do you stop genius like that? there was a compilation of so many songs. it was incredible. >> how about you, al? >> you know, it's kind of obscure, but he did the soundtrack to "batman."
9:06 am
he did the whole joker look. this song, "party man," you know, the whole band was dressed as prince and he's dressed as the joker. >> amazing. you could do a million of these. the super bowl performance in 2007, where it's pouring rain and there is an oral history on youtube if you want to check it out. the producers of the halftime show say, prince, it's a lot of rain. he says, make it rain more. he wanted to use it as part of his performance. they're talking about how he had seven electric gi uitar guitars. they're holding their breath, holding nothing happens. >> not a good mix. >> he made it work. >> speaking of watt ing ing of water and a prince song, julia roberts in "pretty woman" singing "kiss." >> with the headphones on. kiss >> i have one.

9:08 am
>> yeah, prince, we talked about this, we were all kind of laughing about it, he used a selfie of tamron as the cover of his love song, if i could get your attention. that's the cover of the song. that's a selfie of tamron. very, very close friends. we get to know some of the celebrities who come through the studio. tamron and prince were on a different level. very tight. >> he called in here. >> look at our reactions when we learned prince was on the phone. >> i said, hello, prince. he said -- >> hello, ms. tamron. >> ladies and gentlemen, prince. >> what? >> prince is on the phone right now? >> prince and i, if you don't know already, are very close. we talk pretty much every day. >> come on with us and perform for us. >> only if i can say, only if willie can be in my band. i want to sing one time, hit me

9:23 am
yesterday, completely shocked. >> we've heard people say again and own gefr again over and last 24 hours that prince was a revolutionary. why was his music revolutionary? >> to understand his impact and legacy, you have to think about all the different things he did well. let me put it this way, imagine michael jackson as a jimmy page guitar hero. put those two things together and you have a sense of what was so remarkable about prince on stage. he laid claim to music history. he was in the middle of the 1980s, broke through as a major star. had a little richard mustache, james brown's dance moves and put it in the middle of the pop charts in the 1980s. >> in looking at him and you look at social media, and the outpouring from all strata of folks, all around the world. >> right. >> why did he touch so many people? >> that's exactly what he did though.
9:24 am
that's what he was about. it was about uniting people, crossing boundaries. crossing musical boundaries, gender boundaries, racial boundaries. if you were a megastar in the middle of the 1980s, it's what you did. michael jackson did. madonna did. it's possible nobody did it better than him, with more intention than he did. he unify ied audiences. >> for younger viewers who may be watching, too young to be around during "purple rain" and all that, are there artists today in whom you see the influence of prince? >> sure. usually, you see people touching a piece of that legacy, not the whole thing. justin timberlake had a statement saying, somewhere in the background of every song i've ever written is prince. certainly, that's true. you look at a figure like bruno mars, so multi-talented. his performances are great. he reaches back to the music of the past, the way prince did. janelle monae, she is consciously embracing prince's legacy. he embraced her, as well, as an artist.
