it's friday, april 29th. coming up on "early today," a wild night on the west coast as hundreds of donald trump protesters flooded the streets over 20 arrests, a destroyed police car and a candidate turning up the heat. the latest on the bizarre and frightening bomb scare at a baltimore television station. newly minted millionaires at the nfl draft and one player claims his social media was hacked to reveal disturbing visions.

"early today" starts right now. good morning. everybody, i'm betty nguyen. thanks for joining us. a wild night at west. hundreds of donald trump protesters took to the streets of costa mesa, california. among them, a police car was destroyed. at least 20 protesters were arrested. and after a prolonged period of intensity and violence things have begun to calm down. those protests came after a letter laced with white powder was addressed to donald trump's campaign offices in new york. that is being investigated. six people exposed to the substance and isolated as a precaution. jeb bush is speaking out for the first time since dropping out of the race. he talked with cnn's jamie gangel about trump's nomination and what it would mean to the republican party. >> my personal belief is donald

ignoring the recent cruz/kasich back by backing kasich. it says kasich is the best man for the job. also, yesterday, kasich made emotional comments on why he is staying in the race. >> i made the determination that the people of this country deserve something. and i said, what do you think, sweetie? i'm inclined to keep going. she looked at me and said, simple words, because she is not a politician, she said, "the people need a choice and if you don't give them a choice, who will?" >> republican front-runner trump continued to focus his energy on his likely democratic opponent hillary clinton. she also made a conscious pivot to the general election yesterday. her campaign released a stop trump ad detailing the things trump would do as president. while also spending a second day off the trail, continuing to fund-raise off trump's woman card comments. she even supplied her supporters with verified women cards with

we learned clinton is no longer spending ad money in the upcoming primaries. she put out a campaign schedule all but sees indiana to bernie sanders. sanders is echoing trump's card of a rigged political system. >> the problem we are having now not in my view the republicans are winning the elections, the problem is the democrats are losing elections. and i think the reason for that is the democratic party, up to now, has not been clear about which side they are on! >> in other news. a tense standoff at a television station in baltimore on thursday. employees fled after a man dressed in a costume displayed what appeared to be a bomb. pete williams has details. >> reporter: police say a man wearing a animal costume and surgical mask and sunglasses

station in baltimore demanding it air information what he says is a government conspiracy. station employees say he was wearing what appeared to be a bomb vest and said he had a bomb. the building was evacuated. >> he kept on saying, you know, i don't want to hurt anyone, i don't want to hurt you, you know, but i just really want my message to be heard. >> reporter: just before walking in, police say he set his car on fire. some pictures live streamed by a station employee on social media. he then walked out of the station where police were waiting when they told him to show his hands, he refused and police say they fired at him when he wouldn't stop. >> when he walked out on the street, he posed a threat to this community, a threat to the officers and they were forced to use their real guns to shoot the suspect. >> reporter: with the man lying on the ground, robot devices were called in to remove the vest. he was then carried into an armored vehicle and taken to a hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds. >> that was nbc's pete williams reporting. the suspect is in serious condition at a hospital. the authorities say no explosives were found.

into his vest turned out to be candy bars wrapped in aluminum foil. charges have not been filed yet. the state department is blaming the syrian government for an air strike that destroyed a hospital run by doctors without borders. the syrian observatory for human rights reports that 27 people were killed in the strike on the hospital which specialized treating children. secretary of state john kerry blasted syria leader bashar al assad for what he called a deliberate strike on a known medical facility. kerry urged russia to press the assad regime to stop attacking civilians. officials say the attack may constitute more crimes under international law as a two-month-old cease-fire appears to be breaking down. last year a u.s. air strike hit a different doctors without borders hospital in afghanistan which killed 42. the u.s. says that attack was accidental. 16 service personnel have been disciplined but won't face criminal charges. now to the investigation into prince's death.

says investigators are looking into whether prince died from a drug overdose. investigators are also looking into whether a doctor was prescribing the pop icon with drugs in the weeks before he was found dead in his paisley park home. while the officials said there is an investigation into whether prince overdosed on his plane that made an emergency landing earlier this month, still no official cause of death at this time. the carver county sheriff's office continues to lead the investigation. several cities along the mississippi gulf coast have declared states of emergency as tore rent downpours. 24 million people are at risk for severe weather today. it seems like every day, millions and millions face severe weather. >> springtime in the plains, right? it's about once every three days we get these storms rolling through and we have one today. this is a classic one because we got the snow falling in colorado.

during the overnight hours. a little break today and break out more storms this afternoon. numerous thunderstorms blossoming north of the red river in southern oklahoma and white on the on map, snow beginning to become more widespread throughout the state of colorado. let's talk about the severe risk, first. betty said, 24 million people at risk dlg this risk including this area here and texarkana and north of shreveport. earlier today the threat morning is lightning and large hail. then the storms become more surface-based and lower to the ground and bring in the threat of isolated tornadoes and continuing the threat of large hail from waco all the way back up through areas here of northeast texas. especially this afternoon. now the snow side of this, the denver area, snow will be breaking out throughout the day today. 4 to 8 inches is possible with a lot more in other areas, especially at higher elevations. that is just a nasty storm there for april in denver. much of the eastern seaboard
