flames over take a home in new jersey and take two lives in the process. >> the man charged in the death of two religious leaders is about to face a judge. new this morning, a major settlement with a family of a new yorker shot and killed by police. "today in new york" starts now. good morning. it's 5:00 a.m. on this tuesday. it's august 16th. i'm michael gargiulo. >> i'm darlene rodriguez. chris cimino has the forecast. good morning, chris. >> good morning, gieps. not a big change other fact we bring back more humidity. it's a warm to hot day. because of that, a heat advisory in effect in the northeast counties much new jersey and central and southern new jersey on south. feels-like temperatures could reach 95 to 100 during the course of the afternoon. it's in effect from noon until 10:00. a warm front is approaching us this morning. that's causing a couple of light showers in the area. most of us are rain-free. upper 60s in stamford. 72 in west port. 74 in greenwich this morning. into the city, that's the warm

new jersey. elsewhere, the mid-70s. planning ahead, plan on another hot day. 87 at noontime. a slight chance of an isolated shower -- really have to watch the sky for thunderstorms and high near 90. lauren, what do you have for us? >> we have a vehicle fire in the process of extinguished on the new jersey turnpike. southbound all lanes are closed. traffic diverted interchange 13. you will be able to get around it. something to keep in mind. we have slowdowns on the cross bronx expressway because of roadwork eastbound by webster avenue. two lanes are closed. that's scheduled to be out there by 6:00 a.m. more weather and traffic on the 4s. lauren, thank you very much. the fatal fire that took two lives in new jersey late last night. this happened on 14th avenue in belmar. police department still there on the scene right now as is "today in new york's" tracie strahan.

>> reporter: michael, you can still smell the smoke from this fire hours after it happened. as you mentioned, police still guarding this ohm on the 200 block of 14th avenue. take a look at this destruction. from front to back. this home completely burned. burned from top to bottom. all of this happening around 9:30 last night. let's show you the massive emergency response that came here to try and battle flames that broke out, last night. mayor dougherty from belmar actually says that two men were killed here. he says units from belmar were assist fd from avon, spring lake, wall and neptune. he called all of the firefighters heroes. it took about two hours to get the flames under control. in addition to the two fatalities, there are reports that a dog was killed here as well. as we bring you back live, the cause of the fire, of course, under investigation.

county sheriffs department, the fire marshal is in charge of this investigation. we expect him to be out here later today. back to you. >> tracie, thank you very much. 5:03, the man who police say killed two reling us leaders in queens is set to be arraigned today. oscar morel was charged with murder last night. katherine creag is in kew gardens queens with the story. kat, good morning. >> reporter: darlene, good morning. an nypd investigators are telling us they do have the double murder. we expect to see him at this courthouse a little later on where he will be arraigned. a big question is, though, what was the motive. we want to show you that video again of the suspect. oscar morel as he was led out of a police station last night. police cameras captured video of the suv in a separate crime striking a bicyclist moments

akonjee and. they traced back the suv and license plate to him in east new york brooklyn. they cornered him and police say he tried to get away. at a funeral service for the victim, emotions ran my high. >> >> we want justice. thank you very much. >> reporter: a funeral service, we mentioned, hundreds of people gathered there to mourn the victims. we're also learning from sources that during the search of the detectives recovered a weapon. they believe it's the same gun used in the murder. again, the suspect, oscar morel will be here later on at this courthouse for arraignment. back to you, darlene. >> katherine creag, thank you. 5:04. time for a check of weather and traffic on the 4s. a little after 5:00 a.m. it's 80 degrees. >> i'd say no. probably not. the humidity is up too. that's the main feature. with the heat and humidity

beach volleyball showdown. >> you can read up on the athlete, get highlights and get details on the must-see matchups ahead. there was another mishap at the olympics. a large elevated tv camera came crashing down to the ground and injured some people. two of the guide tables that hold the camera snapped. it fell more than 60 feet. landed at the concourse outside the basketball arena. it was like a flying saucer coming down. the olympic says everyone injured was treated and released. the former newtown teacher accused of bringing a loaded gun to school will be in court to get charges dropped. he was charged with bringing it inside newtown school. state law prohibit firearms on school grounds. it's less than two miles away from the sandy hook elementary school shootings. adams was placed on

afterwards. 5:10 now. new york city has reached a 4 hl middle school settlement with the family of akai gurley. he was shot and killed by a police officer in 2014. under the settlement, the money goes to his daughter and it can't be touched until she reaches the aim of 18. peter liang, the former officer was ordered to pay $25,000 to the girl's mother. we're now finding out that a retired nypd detective pulled the trigger at a long island that turned deadly. 61-year-old irvin nowak wounded his two sons sunday before turning the gun on himself. the former officer died. his sons remain in critical condition. it happened at the family's home in belfort. details are not clear. coming up on 5:11. rudy giuliani facing harsh

east setauket at 75. city at 80. look at the water temperatures. 85 off the jersey shore. 72 newburgh. 72 in poughkeepsie. generally low 70s for the suburbs north and west. a random shower working up through portions of orange county. that's into ulster and duchess. sporadic in nature. could be a couple of light showers. warm front tries to move on through from the south and west. it's the cold front out to the west that really runs the b threat for us later on this afternoon. you can see on future tracker. this is 1:00. there's hazy sunshine between the clouds. that's for sure. these heating us up close to 90 degrees. from trenton to central new jersey, this is 4:00 in the afternoon. then a more significant line develops to the west of us. that moves from northwest to southeast between the hours of about 5:00 and 8:00. looks like heaviest over the city, close to 7:00. that moves eastward. then dissipates overnight.

plan unveiled yesterday. >> he laid out this framework for dealing with terrorist threats in ohio during a speech. he said destroying isis would be the core of his foreign policy if he becomes president. this plan includes a new immigration proposal that he calls extreme vetting. it includes what he calls a cold war era ideological test. it would ban anybody who doesn't embrace american values. he also proposed commissions to define warning signs for radicalization. >> we should only admit into this country those who share our values and respect our people. in the cold war, we had an ideological screening test. the time is overdue to develop a new screening test for the threats we face today. >> meanwhile, while introducing running mate mike pence at the same rally in ohio, former new

beat the heat -- >> too late. it's already 80 degrees in town. comfortable and muggy start to the day indeed. warm and sticky. it will feel like 95 to 100 this afternoon with the temperature combined with the humidity as it continues to climb. stronger storms this afternoon and in the evening hours. 81 elmhurst. 77 oceanside. towards the north and west. it's a little bit better. low 70s and upper 60s. clear to partly cloudy. plan on a day featuri 76 at noontime with a mix of clouds and sun. a better chance of seeing showers and storms, especially past 4:00. a little after 5:30, what are we finding on the commute? >> not too much so far. one accident on the belt parkway. still well avenue, exit. two lanes remain closed here. truck route 1 and 9, there's an accident by central avenue that's affecting traffic in both directions. you can see the delays here. if you're headed southbound,

"today in new york's" katherine creag is in kew gardens queens with the story. >> reporter: he's charged with that double murder. but police lipgd him to a hit and run as well. we do expect to see the suspect, oscar morel at this courthouse. he is to be arraigned a little later today. when he was led out of a police station late last night, he didn't say anything to reporters. police say security cameras captured video of that suspect. oscar morel striking a bicyclist in his suv. that took place moments after an imam, akonjee and uddin who killed blocks away. detectives traced back the suv

east new york brooklyn. police say he tried to get away. but he was arrested and an nypd chief talked about what led to that arrest. >> we were immediately responded to that location and pulled video from that corner and looked at the two cars and they were identicalidentical. we looked at stickers and decals on the windshields. they seemed identical. we had la funeral service where hundreds of people gathered to mourn the victims. two religious leaders beloved in the community. we're also learning from sources that during the search of the suspect's apartment, detectives recovered a weapon. they believe it's the same gun used in the murders and darlene, we're told that necessity put in evidence bags clothing that they believe were used the day of the killings. back to you, darlene. >> all right. in kew gardens, katherine creag, thank you. port authority police are

back to the heat advisories again today. covering the city, the five boroughs, really central and southern new jersey. the entire state for that matter. lone exception northwest new jersey and eastern long island. feels-like temperatures 95 to near 100 with the heat and humidity combined by noon to 10:00 in the city. it's noon to 8:00 in the city. the areas shaded in yellow, we have a slight risk for severe thunderstorms later this afternoon. areas in green south and east, afr marginal risk e. nonetheless, thunderstorms could fire up. we've seen showers here and isolated shower or thunderstorm in parts of the area south and east and couple to the north and west. things are try for the -- it's time to push into that tropical-like air. that will be the fuel for producing showers and storms. 80 in the city and southwest wind. it transports more humidity in here. 87 at noon.

inside the home. the mayor tweeted out a thank you to the area fire departments calling them heroes. but still, the cause of this fire still under investigation. we'll show you now the emergency response to this. there were hotspots that remained when cameras arrived here. units from belmar were assisted from avon, spring lake, wall and neptune. it took about two the flames under control. the damage can be seen from top to bottom. all throughout. in addition to the two fatalities, there are reports that a dog was killed here as well. again, michael, as we bring you back live, police on the scene. this area has reopened to traffic. a lot of people saying they could see the fire from a few miles away here right near the beach. this is a large rental community. it remains unknown if the people that were inside of this home were actually renting it at the

almost 5:45. talking about heat advisory for the city. a good portion of new jersey too. the humidity is back today. the feels-like temperatures could get to 95 to 100 degrees at time, especially mid to late afternoon. temperatures this morning, pretty warm at the start already. it's 76 in north merrick. 74 in butt -- massapequa. the city holding at 80 degrees. low 70 once you get to the catskills and pock knows. doourp an indication of -- the dew point is 75. again, that puts us in the tropical category. almost an awful feeling out there. through the afternoon, you can see it holds in that range until 3:00 in the afternoon. into the evening, it gets as high as 78. that's really way into the awful range and also way into the range where you start to add fuel to the possibility of some severe thunderstorms. each into the evening hours, it stays in the 70s.

connecticut and mid and upper 70s across long island city. the warm spot at 79 right now. we are at a slight risk for severe thunderstorms. severe storm prediction center puts us here. that's the areas in yellow. any of the thunderstorms that pop up this afternoon could have the potential of a slight chance of reaching severe levels. that means wind gusts could exceed 50, 60 miles an hour in cases. you have to watch it closely. keep a careful eye to the sky. any warnings or issues. 90 the expected high. if we make it to 90 -- first half of the night will be stormy. i think the window really greatest chance from northwest to southeast for storms today, about 2:00, 3:00 in the afternoon for the distant suburbs north and west and 7:00, 8:00 on east. the wind goes more northwest. going to really notice the dew points come down, the humidity drops in the afternoon. may not feel that way early on, but it will get better throughout the day.

the scene of a fire last night. the mayor of belmar matt dougherty says belmar fire officials were assisted by crews from avon, spring lake and wall, as well as neptune and called them all heroes. it did take about two hours to get the flames under control. a short time ago, we spoke to residents who saw it go down. >> it was a lot of smoke and i could see the fire engines put it out. >> the s years ago, a lot of people put a lot of money into rebuilding their homes. it's a shame that this happened. again, this is one of the homes that they gutted and they rebuilt pretty much rebuilt from the ground up. >> reporter: in addition to the fatalities, a dog died inside of the fire as well. police are now at the scene, replaced the fire officials that were here. the monmouth fire marshal will

welcome back. 6:45. weather and traffic time. our headlines. we're back to the heat and humidity today. another steamy one. however, there could be thunderstorms later this afternoon, up like yesterday into the evening hours. some could reach severe levels fl we'll have to keep a careful eye to the sky. improving tomorrow. the hit humid will be the trepd towards the end of the week. heat advisory in effect for nearby counties in northeast new jersey and all of central and southern new jersey for this afternoon. from noon until 10:00, the feels-like temperatures could get into the 90s. close to 100 in some parts of the area. the dew point, that's a good indication of the comfort or discomfort in this case. by 6:00 this evening, the dew point in the city expected to be 78 degrees. that puts it in that awful

by tomorrow morning, upper 60s to low 70s. which isn't fantastic either. sticky to tropical-like. watch what happens tomorrow. the dew point drops to 58 by the 5:00 hours. 58 is the nice category. we haven't been there in quite some time. things will get better in terms of feel by later tomorrow. it's still steamy out there today. quiet through noon. then notice we have a couple of showers and storms. this is 4:00 in the afternoon. a more significant line city. a little sooner north and west. later across long island and that finally dissipates overnight tonight. 90 again the expected high today. 90 with six in a row, a couple of nasty thunderstorms. first half of tonight could be stormy in parts of the area. it dries out overnight with a low temperature of 76. back to 88. but breezy and refreshing that breeze as the humidity continues to drop in the afternoon and fairly comfortable. into thursday, it might get stickier briefly.
