they'll dwindle down to one or two storms. things really start to weaken across the area. be on the lookout for lightning, damaging winds, heavy rain, and we still have the heat in spots. we'll talk more about that in just a few minutes. it was a horrifying hit-and-run that sent a 78-year-old man flying out of his wheelchair and it left him arrest all thanks to solid police work. >> reporter: natalie, police tell us that driver was going to work today just about a mile from the scene of the hit-and-run. they recognized his car and immediately took him into custody. a buick with fresh front end damage and a missing skid plate. the police spotted the banged up car in this parking lot on ft. lee road. they arrested the driver

78-year-old man in a wheelchair, then taking off. >> he admitted to striking the subject in a wheelchair and also not stopping or calling 911. >> reporter: the car slammed into the elderly man as he crossed ft. lee road monday morning. the man was thrown nearly 25 feet. this woman heard the crash. >> he tried to stop, i think. that's why the stopping >> reporter: she called 911, then ran out to help. the victim lying helpless on the ground. the car nowhere in sight. >> when i ran into him, luckily, he was conscious. >> reporter: the elderly man suffered six broken ribs, a broken clavicle, and a fractured hip. the driver was likely distracted. also a key piece of evidence left behind. a front skid plate which they traced to a 2016 buick encore.

move that cost her gold. back to you now in new york. >> thanks. chuck? now we have an i-team exclusive for you. a rikers island correctional officer under scrutiny for alleged sex assault on an inmate faces questions about social media posts. sarah wallace joins us with the developments. >> this is a two-fold investigation. the department of correction has a strict social media policy and is now examining the posts of a rike may have bigger problems. he's been accused by an inmate of sex abuse. that inmate a restaurant consultant from manhattan sat down with me behind bars. you feel violated. >> disgusted. it's disgusting what happened to me. >> reporter: he is now being held at the manhattan detention center. in may, he was a pretrial inmate

for more than a month and repeatedly intimidated. >> it is troubling that these allegations of sex abuse were known by the department and they kept our client with this alleged assailant in the same population. he was harassed by him. >> reporter: a spokesperson for the department of correction told us the matter remains under investigation and that all reports of sexual assault and abuse are investigated thoroughly and expeditiously. a department source an area where he has no inmate contact. the i-team reached the officer by phone and he initially agreed to an interview, but then stopped taking calls. he is under a separate investigation now for social media posts that surfaced after the alleged assault. in this photo, he and other officers are seen in riot gear. he calls them the wrecking crew. in this facebook post, he responds to a fellow guard commenting about an inmate

to 100 in some spots today and higher in others. we can see our view from the top of our rock camera. there are a couple of isolated storms south of the city. the bigger storms are to the west moving into new jersey right now. the heat is still an issue. the heat advisory is in effect until 10:00 from bergen county all the way down to ocean the mid to upper 90s out there. feels like 93 in floral park. 97 on staten island. down towards long branch and trenton, right around 100 degrees is what it feels like for you. we're not expecting the humidity to be a major player for the next several days, but it is definitely out there right now. we have one lone thunderstorm near lakewood that is moving towards neptune, middletown, and

just be on the lookout. if you hear thunder, make sure you move inside. this line that's moving into western new jersey towards white township, clinton, bridgewater, that should be moving through between now and about 7:00. that would produce some severe weather. if you hear thunder, that means there's lightning. it means it is close enough by you to strike. make sure you move indoors and to a secure spot inside your house, inside a building, inside remains in effect until 11:00 for northern and western new jersey and pike county pennsylvania because that's where the bigger storms are. that's probably where most of them will be for this evening. there could be a leftover shower or storm around midnight, but overall it starts to dry through the overnight. keep an eye to the sky. tomorrow's weather is sunnier
