"today in new york" starts now. good morning. it is 5:00 a.m. on this wednesday, august 17. >> and chris has the forecast. good morning. >> good morning, guys. things have quieted down considerably. thunderstorms are gone and in its wake, some drier air trying to move in. breezes bringing in less humid air, but still starting out pretty muggy. greenwich at 76. poughkeepsie, 79, down the shore 77, and in in the city we're holding at 77 degrees. showers are dissipating. drier air will win out temporarily from the west before this next area of showers starts to slide back in here later tonight into tomorrow. so the temperature trend, we go from the upper 70s to near 80 by

sunshine. but at least less humid conditions. let's see if there are any problems for the commute. no major problems. only construction. but it is causing a delay in certain areas. for new jersey, route 17 northbound shut down between century road and midland avenue and southbound two lanes are blocked. northbound you'll be diverted at century road and get back on later after midland avenue. and cross-bronx expressway, two lanes remain shut down east on the 4s. new this morning, a fierce fire has injured two children in bergen county on washington avenue in little ferry. jen maxfield is there and this was quite the scene. >> reporter: definitely was. and what an incredible rescue operation when a little ferry police lieutenant who was driving in the area heard an explosion and raced to the reason.

the residents were literally throwing their children to safety. we will show you some video of that fire now. this is a very serious two alarm blaze that is believed to have started as a gas explosion on the first floor of this three story home at 109 washington avenue. the car fire quickly spread to the home and now six people including two young children, one just five years old, are in the hospital. we understand that they are suffering from serious injuries including in some cases second and third degree burns. here at 109 washington avenue. neighboring fire departments from south hackensack, rich field park were here to help. fire investigators here on the scene, we'll show you a live picture now, some firefighters and police officials are still here trying to figure out exactly what sparked the blaze this morning. but again, the leading theory is a gas explosion. and as for those six injured people, residents of the home we're told that they are hat

that's the latest live from the scene. >> jen, thank you. the parents of a jogger found strangled in a queens park are making an unusual offer to the killer. more than 1,000 people turned out for a memorial walk for katrina vatrano yesterday. it took place in the same park where the 30-year-old was found dead two weeks ago. the nypd still does not have any solid leads in her murder. her parents are now offering the reward money to her killer. >> turn yourself in. i will make sure that reward money goes to the person of your choice. your sister, your brother, your mother. it's a life changer. you will be caught, so take advantage of that. >> so far the family raised more than $245,000 in reward money for information leading to an arrest. police are looking for a pair of robbers who went shopping. the nypd released video of the suspects who robbed a woman in

elderly man in a wheelchair. the victim was thrown nearly 25 feet along the street and broke six ribs and his collarbone. police say the front of skid plate of the suv that hit him was at the scene and they used that plate to track the driver down. in brooklyn, a man is in the hospital after getting shot while alledgedly trying to rob an off duty officer. approached just a block from the precinct early monday morning. sources tell us after a struggle, the officer's cousin shot the man in the leg. he later checked into a hospital where he was questioned by police. it's not clear if any charges were filed. it's 5:12. and still ahead, tens of thousands of people forced from their homes as an out of control wildfire destroys dozens of buildings in california. then later, commuter frustrations, a new report

a little better feel out there this morning. humidity will start to drop as we go through the day. and it will get breezy at times. some winds could gust to 20, 25 miles per hour. haven't seen that in a while. humidity is back tomorrow. more unsettled with a few more showers and thunderstorms and then plenty of sunshine on friday as we approach 90 once again at that point. 76 right now in chelsea, 78 this diker heights and jackson heights. and upper 70s. pretty uniform temperatures this morning. we'll show you the dew points. notice by 1:00 this afternoon at 62, that is a little bit muggy, but really getting closer to that nicer range. so certainly going to feel better as we go through the afternoon. actually into the evening it drops to around 60, which is that nice feeling out there. but watch what happens overnight

back into the 70s across a good portion of the area and that is back to that tropical feel and that's why we expect showers and storms again by tomorrow. maybe late tonight. but for today, a fair amount of of sunshine out there. you can see the thin veil of clouds. no thunderstorms, it stays quiet. notice through 7:00 tonight, nice looking evening. and then we'll start to pop a few showers and storms overnight and toward morning. and then a few more during the day tomorrow peppering the area. nothing really widespread in terms of its coverage. just scattered aroun meantime at the shore today, not a bad place to be, upper 80s to near 90 today with that land breeze. south facing shore line, a little cooler. however especially out around suffolk county, a high risk for rip current, so probably stay out of the water there. your wave heights about 2 to 5 feet. low rip current risk, but it increases along the short facing shore lines. uv index very high, 9.

levels over at the lincoln tunnel and holland tunnel, you're in for a nice ride, as well. we'll have more weather and traffic coming up on the 4s. now that that raging wildfire in california, more than 80,000 people are under mandatory evacuation orders. kerry barrett is following all of this. >> and just one day the so-called blue cot fire has burned 18,000 acres and tipped to spread other emergency workers are battling it. it started as a small brush fire and then exploded into this huge fast moving wildfire about 60 miles east of raenks. this was yesterday. this morning the fire is still 0% contained, it's covered 28 square miles and that's only 12 hours after it began. the governor there is declaring a state of emergency. ten air tankers have been

overnight. and as you mentioned, more than 82,000 residents were noticed to evacuated. a hospice patient had to be evacuated by air. there are aerial pictures that captured a roadside firenado. apparently we don't have that. swirling gusts of wind sent these flames twisting up into the air. there is a picture. the for people and large and small animals. this fire is so big, it shut down a portion of i-15 in both directions. and a lot of homes just bur bur to the ground. six firefighters got trapped. they were able to escape, two with minor injuries. a red flag warning lasts through thursday night, they say the strong winds, low humidity and warm temperatures would continue

and they would contribute to extreme fire behavior. once again, this is just 12 hours after this thing started. >> pretty incredible. kerry barrett following this in the news room. thank you. another natural crisis going on, rescuers planning it go door to door to search for potential victims of severe weather in southern louisiana. at least 11 deaths are being blamed on the torrential rains and historic flooding in the state. eight parishes now on the federal disaster list. th parishes on that list. 36,000 people have registered with fema, the flooding is unfortunately not over yet. forecasters say it will be in fact moving further south. john mclaughlin has died. for 34 years, he hosted the mclaughlin group. it offered quick and often combative political analysis.

neighboring departments came here to help, as we. we understand the injured people are at hackensack university medical center. that's the latest live from the scene. new this morning, police are searching for thieves who attacked a bronx man in his building. investigators say the two men put the teen in a chokehold and then robbed him. video shows them following him into his apartment on fox street. one suspect put the teen in a chokehold while the other went through his pockets and took a debit card, phone and cash, just $10. and we're hearing from a long islands family who woke up to intruders in their home. home security video shows the suspects casing the house in north woodmere last monday. you can see them testing the lock on the front door before throwing a brick through a basement window. then you see them inside the

welcome back. time for weather and traffic. temperatures this morning still quite warm. generally good 75 and 80 everywhere you go throughout the tri-state. west islip, 79. the city, we're at 77. most of the hudson valley, mid and u morristown at 73. still a lot of cloud cover out there. thunderstorms are long gone. the last leftover shower moving in to fairfield county, maybe brushing the north shore. but that is it. and then the clouds will start to thin out, you can see that happening north and west and i think we will get into sunshine for a time today. brief push of dryer air, but more storms that will get in here tonight and tomorrow.

was questioned in the case of a new york city woman killed in massachusetts. standing outside in his socks, the man who didn't want to be identified spoke exclusively to our station in boston. he denies being involved in the death, says police tested his dna and that he's under investigation. >> i consented because i got the nothing to hide, even a thought. and they did swab me, ask a school. >> marcot was killed while jogging. the man lives in the same area. he says investigators were suspicious because he skipped work the day after marcot was killed. police would not say whether he's a suspect or person of interest in this case. a judge in westchester county has sentenced a former track coach to 100 years behind bars. 28-year-old samuel davis was convicted of sexually abusing a girl for years while he coached

track team.victim was just 12 when the abuse began. she came forward last year to a relative. and connecticut investigators are trying to figure out what caused an electric shock that injured six at an amusement the park at ocean beach in new london. all six people were rushed to the hospital with injuries. they're he expected to be okay. one of them a young boy touched a metal fence as he was getting off the ride and suffered burns to his hands. ic series of thefts that target religious statues and other items outside home. police are trying to determine if the crime spree is the work of this man. he was spotted outside a home where a wicker pat the i don't set was stolen monday night. police tell us there have been 24 items stolen from front porches and yards in the past year alone. they include nine religious stat statue, four u.p.s. packages and gas grill.

commuters. and commuter checklist, all the major lines look good. we did get a report of delays on downtown b and d trains, though. an inferno in california, here it is, just one day after the start of a small brush fire exploded into a fast moving wildfire just north of los angeles. kerry barrett is in the newsroom with a look at how devastating things are in this area. it's been such a tough summer for wildfires in california. >> such a as you mentioned, the blue cot fire has burned now 18,000 acres, it continued to spread overnight. more than 700 firefighters are battling it. it started as a small brush fire and exploded into this huge very quickly moving wildfire about 60 miles east of l.a. yesterday. this morning that fire is 0% contained and it is covered now more than 28 square miles. this is only 12 hours after it began. the governor there has declared a state of emergency and dozens

ground. there were 10 air tankers that have been dumping fire retardant on that area pretty much all day yesterday and they continued that battle overnight with night flying helicopters. seven communities, more than 82,000 residents, are on notice to evacuate. in fact some aerial pictures from knbc captured a roadside firenado swirling gusts of wind sent these flames twisting up into the air. the red cross has set up shelters for residents forced from their shut down a portion of i 15 and that is in both directions. so travel is difficult, as well. two firefighters have minor injuries helping with the evacuations. and the national weather service has issued a red flag warning that lasts through thursday night. there will be strong wind, low humidity, warm temperatures, all of them combined to create these extreme fire conditions. >> you called it a firenado? that's the term?

two-alarm fire. believed to have started as a gas explosion on the first troor of this three story home. the car fire quickly spread to the home and now six people including two young children, a girl just five years old, are in the hospital. we understand that they are suffering from serious injuries including second and third degree burns. the fire started just after midnight as i said here on 109 washington avenue. people who live in the art unfold. >> just laying on the grass, and when they moved them, her screaming. i just hope that everybody is okay. everything can be replaced, but not people. >> reporter: and again looking live here at this home completely destroyed in the blaze, this was a very intense fire. help was required from other departments.
