this accident and avoid it. don't go to side streets, take the l.i.e. happening now, firefighters still on the scene of a staten island fire that injured more than 20 people, damaged several homes, tracie strahan is at the scene with the latest. when you see this video, you can't believe how quickly this fire spread and how serious it was. >> reporter: it did take time to get things under we want to show you the aftermath of all of this on benzinger avenue. these homes charred by flames. a couple collapsed. as officials try to pinpoint all this, they may be looking at the home with the heaviest damage. this fire burned from one home to the next burning seven of them. two of those homes collapsed.

flames so intense it burnt the siding on several homes. >> i keep thanking god that everyone is okay. >> reporter: fire marshals will return to the scene, but records on the city's building department website shows an active complaint against one of the homes saying it didn't have a permit for being performed on the second floor. it even said in the complaint if they continue, the crew could electrocute themselves and they deemed this site to be unsafe. 21 people were injured as a result. everyone expected to be okay. that also included 19 firefighters, because of the intense heat outside and what they were up against, they were heat related injuries. back to you. >> you can see how that would happen. thank you very much. police have just released video of a plan wanted for

his passport back and his part in this case will be considered closed. not the case for ryan lochte, negative sentiment here in the united states is growing. look at what we just saw on the cover of the "new york post." liar liar speedo on fire. rather than being the victims, it was ryan lochte and three other teammates that were actually the ones causing trouble on the night they claimed they were robbed at gun point. the pol c accounts and surveillance video confirmed the four vandalized a bathroom at the gas station. the athletes told officials and media outlets including the "today" show that they were robbed at gun point and had their wallets stolen. as they returned to the olympic village, close to three hours later than they claimed, surveillance video shows them pulling out their wallets to

there in jacob reese park. it's a doppler radar on wheels. it gives us unprecedented access to any storm. >> no one in the broadcast business has anything like this. chris shows us what it can do. >> storm ranger 4 is not just a truck, it's next generation weather technology. we built it and no one else has it we can drive it anywhere to get closer to the storm and give you a closer look at what's coming. if there's weather, you may see storm neighborhood. here in the studio we'll show you what it's seeing. it's marked by that red radar sweep. the reach is 75 miles all around wherever we take it. now traditional radars, again, beam way into the upper levels of the atmosphere. storm ranger 4's radar beams into the lower levels of the atmosphere, about 4,000 feet. this is the part of the atmosphere where most of the unstable and severe weather can take place.

"today in new york's" tracie strahan is in st. george where firefighters are still on the scene. >> not only are those

to restore power. at one point they had to cut power to 400 customers in the area. we'll show you the reason why. look at the damage as a result of last night's six alarm fire that left about 42 people homeless. we will show you video now that was into our newsroom showing those searing flames that engulfed seven homes on benzinger avenue. you can see the firefighters trying to make their way into erupted on the second floor. at one point this area covered in smoke because this fire started in a multi family home and quickly spread down the block. a total of seven homes either damaged or destroyed. this morning two of them are in jeopardy of collapsing leaving neighbors to scramble to safety. >> when it was smoke at the house down the street, i saw it. it -- i said smoke. then my cousin, like, ran up to

later, we're still not allowed anywhere near the destruction that remains here. two of the homes collapsed, you can see two of them in imminent danger. as they try to figure out what sparked this, they may be focusing on one home in particular that suffered heavy damage. we'll show you video into our newsroom of the raging flames that engulfed one home on benzinger avenue around 6:00 last night. then jumped from home to home burning 7 in total. two it took 250 firefighters to try to get the upper hand on things. a fire so intense that it burned the siding off of homes across the street. it sent residents in the area scrambling. >> i was standing on my porch. i ran downstairs. i was standing on my porch and i felt the heat from the fire. i'm so thankful, i'm thanking god that everyone is okay. >> fire marshals will return to

building department website shows an active complaint open against one of the homes in the neighborhood saying it did not have a permit for electrical wiring being performed on the second floor. we can see the fire officials that remain here. just had a shift change. they're still protecting this area. right now 42 people are being aided by the red cross. they're homeless this morning. back to you. >> tracie strahan on staten i'd with that story, thank you. police are on th deadly accident in newark. we want to show you the aftermath of a violent car crash that killed at least one person. one car on its side crushed. police are trying to find two armed robbers who got trapped inside a cell phone store in paterson but escaped after a slow emergency response. surveillance video shows the men with guns approaching tommy

speaking of alternates, alternate side of the street parking rules are in effect today. firefighters on the scene of a huge fire in staten island. that fire ripped through seven buildings along benzinger avenue. 250 firefighters at its height battling that fire into the night. itgutted two buildings that collapsed. so hot it melted the siding off of those homes. the red cross offering relief to dozens of people who are homeless. residents struggled to get to safety. >> i saw smoke, i said smoke. my cousin ran up to get them. they came down. >> that fire injured at least 20 people including firefighters. official says they worry other homes are in danger of collapsing. police are looking for the person who slashed a man trying to break up a fight in riverside park. police say it started when the 46-year-old victim came across

broadway. one of them had a child with him. when one man stepped in to help, the other man suffered a slash on the arm. communities could find it difficult to get to the queen center mall this weekend that's because queens boulevard main roadway will be closed outside of the mall between 57th avenue and 62nd drive. two lanes will be open to traffic on queens boulevard service roads. but the parking will be restricted. the closures start tonight at 11:00 p.m. and will go all the way through 5:00 a.m. monday crews will use that time to make repairs to the woodhaven boulevard bridge. one of the u.s. swimmers accused of lying about a robbery in rio will be on his way home today. new video shows jimmy feigen entering a brazil court. he settled his case by agreeing to pay more than $10,000 to a brazilian charity. his three other teammates including ryan lochte are back in the u.s. rio police say they flat outlayed about being robbed at

breaking news jersey. a serious crash involving two buses. >> kai simonsen is over the scene in chopper 4. what can you tell us? >> michael and darlene, just a second ago you saw one of the numerous victims being put into an ambulance and off to a local hospital. we count at least seven people injured or at least seven people being tended to by ems at this point. we don't know if that number will rise or not. you can see some of those victims, three of them still out here on this scene.

as i was saying earlier, i've been doing this for about 20 years, we rarely see accidents this severe, especially involving nj transit buses. two nj transit buses here. it happened at raymond boulevard and broad street. it appears like the bulk of the rescue operation at this point has concluded. now the priority is just to treat the victims. once again, at least seven injuries reported at this poent. there will be an accident down. the level of damage to that bus on the left hand portion of your screen. an accident investigation will be conducted. one of the things that i'm sure accident investigators will be asking about is whether or not that bus on the right was speeding at this point. again, it would defy logic if that bus wasn't or the other bus was. we're not sure how this accident happened. as we come out, a huge rescue

downtown newark. we'll keep you up to date. back over to you. >> just to give people perspective, this is at the tip of military park in newark. it looks like where this accident has happened, broad street running down south through military park and raymond boulevard cutting across it. this is a controlled intersection. there are light there's not there was a traffic violation, speed, somebody going through a red light. it's possible one of those buses was making a right, the other bus was going from the bottom end of your screen to the top. unless you're not allowed to make a right here, possibly they didn't violate that law going through a red light. again, speed, i have to keep thinking about speed here. that's a question i'm sure on everyone's mind. >> as we see, we're looking at

we want to be careful at this point, some companies do lease these buses. we're not sure who was operating the bus and what was happening. you mentioned before it does appear that the passengers, the bulk of the passengers, perhaps the only passengers were on that bus that seems to have the most damage. >> you know, we haven't been able to confirm that. we're looking at some of the victims about to be removed from the scene. over towards the left, going it does appear as though, though we cannot confirm, can't stress that enough, can't confirm that all of the passengers or the bulk of the passengers were on that bus from what we've been seeing here, that would suggest that. most of the victims have been removed from that bus on the left hand portion of your screen. we heard some scanner chatter a bit earlier as we were approaching the scene, the

driver was on board one of these buses, we're assuming the one on the right. we can't confirm that. that's just what we're hearing from the scanner. >> kai, thank you very much. we want to check in with lauren. we want to point out, new jersey transit saying on their twitter page, bus service in downtown newark experiencing delays and detours. >> absolutely. that's a big closure there. a lot of them heading towards newark and penn station will be affected by on the new york state thruway, two lanes still blocked between exits 12 and 11. delays are extensive. this is out by exit 14. they continue back past the garden state parkway. if you were planning on heading down to the george washington bridge, there's a disabled truck on the cross bronx expressway making that not the best ride either this morning. delays over the bridge are over 20 minutes. picking up a lot of alternate volume. to the western spur of the turnpike, an accident southbound
