so far she's spent millions bailing out her boyfriend on various drug charges. today we are set up to learn new information about clean-up efforts underway at the dan river coal ash site. >> we'll tour with the duke energy coal excavation operations. emma wright joins us live with a preview of what we can expect. >> reporter: this tour comes just a day after the environmental commission reviewed -- got reviews of clean-up efforts across the state. people who live in the area say they are still concerned about their drinking water and just want it cleaned up. nearly two years after tens of thousands of tons of coal ash spilled into the dan river clean-up continues. recently some people living near the ash ponds received letters from the state health department warning them of elevated levels of pollutants in their well water the state says the water is safe but environment groups say they just want to see it dleepped up.

do its job, follow science, recognize common sense, stop playing politics and get the coal ash cleaned up. >> reporter: "wncn investigates" will be getting more answers during a tour of the site. we visited a coal ash containment site last year in chatham county where residents say they are worried about the health effects. >> both of them have asthma, i'm afraid some of this coal ash will drift over here. >> reporter: wncn was also there when the state and dan river riverkeeper took samples near the spill site. >> this stuff is dangerous. >> reporter: the state says they have not determined if any contamination is actually coming from the coal ash ponds. the tour is happening this afternoon, "wncn investigates" will have an update on the news at 6:00 and 7:00. environmental groups say they are planning a protest outside of the governor's mansion this morning.

hill bar will lose its alcohol license for three weeks. come february. the bar will also have to pay a $5,000 for their role in a deadly dui crash last summer. the bar was one of two places former unc student chandler kenna went to before police say he got into a crash on i-85 in orange county. three people were killed including a little girl. that girl's family says the punishment doesn't go far enough. i don't think anyone who lost a loved one would be satisfied with that as adequate punishment. >> the bar's attorney declined to comment on the suspension. attorneys for the accused mastermind of a kidnapping plot targeting a wake county assistant da asked for the charges to be dropped wednesday. the judge denied the request though, kevin melton is one of the several men charged in the 2014 kidnapping of frank jansen, later rescued by the fbi in atlanta.

welcome back. 29 degrees, live picture from our wncn studios, just a few morning. very clear skies have paved the way for very cold temperatures once again. 25 in sanford and raeford, pinehurst, still just above freezing. lillington and clayton also in the upper 20s this morning. factor in a little bit of a breeze that is out there and this is what it actually feels like. more like 22 in raleigh, feels like 19 roxboro. feels more like 30, a little below freezing, in pinehurst. these are the temperatures to be prepared for. layer up. we'll be in the upper 20s through 7:00 and 8:00 this morning. i don't think we get to above freezing until about 9:00 at 34. as we head into the afternoon

crews got a call that the board burst into flames and sparked the fire. they quickly put them out but say there was a lot of smoke damage. the government is investigating this after dozens of fires. duke university is one of a long list of colleges banning the hoverboards. students have been asked to remove them for safety reasons. so far unc east carolina and north carolina central already banned them in dorms. organizers plan to hold more interfaith forums after hundreds showed up to one in raleigh last night. members of various faiths met at the tullman memorial baptist church in raleigh. they want to shine a light on islamo phobia. >> we went to reach out to all

to create a more peaceful world, more just where everybody has a place at the table. >> organizers say the dialogue started just a few months ago. martin luther king day isn't until monday but city and county leaders and workers in durham teamed up yesterday to kick off the holiday. dozens of employees and community members all participated in the 11th annual observance of downtown durham to honor the legacy of dr. king. dr. reginald van stevens of the white rock baptist church gave the key note address. dr. king was assassinated in memphis, tennessee, in 1968. pier 1 imports is recalling hundreds of thousands of swinging chairs in the united states and canada because of a fall hazard. the recall includes 276,000 of the swing osan chairs. through january 2010 through august of 2015 the suspension hardware can break or the stand

by noon we'll already be warmer than where we were yesterday with a temperature of 48. we keep climbing though, 55 our afternoon high and for that evening drive home really looking at clear skies hanging around as temperatures fall back to near 50. so here's our satellite and radar and you can see over the past two hours really no clouds in sight. if you're waking up now and you're a stargazer peek outside. i noticed the sky full of stars as i drove to work this morning. here we are, 7:00 a.m. and through the afternoon hours, i'm not expecting a lot to change. so plenty of sunshine, remember those sunglasses along with the winter jacket. as we head into the overnight hours we'll start to see a few clouds here and there, that is going to keep us a bit milder. i think temperatures could stay above freezing for sunrise tomorrow morning. now as we head towards tomorrow, at lunchtime we're starting to see more and more clouds but we'll still be on the dry side. notice this is friday at 1:00. as we head into the afternoon that is when the widespread rain showers move up the east coast.
