raleigh. >> i'm stefan chase. >> i'm mike gonzalez. activists are at the governor's mansion complaining their drinking water is affected by river. story. >> reporter: the protesters just started their press conference a few minutes ago. about a dozen people are out here, a lot upset with mccrory who said hasn't responded to a single one of their complaints and phone calls. they say the governor had dinner with duke energy executives but can't find the talk to talk to them. they are inviting him to dinner, then say they are going to protest in a few hours. duke energy is set to give a tour of the coal ash spill site to the media. they've been working two years to clean the ash that spilled into the river in 2004. recently people received letters from the state health department warning them of high levels of the pollutants in

they just want to see that spill cleaned up. >> it makes me really angry. it's like he doesn't take peoples' livelihoods seriously, he's putting duke energy before our citizens, we're living in a crisis in these communities. and the water situation needs to be addressed. this has been going on for over 40 years and even though there's not a big, like a break with the dan river spill or one event there's just a poisoning happening everyday. and, it's really impacting peoples lives in devastating ways. >> reporter: again these folks say they just want some answers about when this spill is going to be cleaned up and if their drinking water is safe again. after this wrap-up of this press conference they say they are going to walk around the governor's mansion in a little bit of a protest. we reached out to the

we're waiting to hear back from them. and wncn investigates is going to take a tour of the coal ash dump site later this afternoon. more on that at 6:00 and 7:00. religious and community leaders will gather in downtown durham tonight for a candlelight vigil against violence. people paying tikrit to the 45 victims that died violently in 2015. this is the 24th year of the event. it begins 5:30, at city hall plaza. wncn learned durham police are making progress on a string of violent crimes that ravaged the city since the start of the new year. police say they've arrested six of the 16 suspects wanted in certain cases. much more on this developing story tonight at 6:00 and 7:00. and also more on-line at wncn.com. taking a look outside now, definitely a beautiful morning to get outside. and move around a bit if you're going to exercise but you'll need to bundle up. alyssa, we can also see rain this weekend? >> that's right. we have changes coming through.

with warmer temperatures now. 48, blue skies at the raleigh- durham international airport. already about 5 degrees warmer than where we ended up the day yesterday. that's just the beginning of it. we're halfway through the day. we'll continue to see the temperatures climb into the afternoon. so checking in with temperatures around the area this morning, it's hard to believe but many of you started in the 20s, now durham, you're at 48. roxboro 49, also 49 south hill. upper 40s as we travel south of raleigh. 49 fayetteville and raeford. 48 clinton. first 50s on the board, pinehurst and henderson both reporting 50 this morning. hour by hour, 2:00 temperature 53. 55 the high, that is warmer than where we should be this time of year. mid-40s by this evening. more on the rain coming up in the complete forecast. a chapel hill teen who died in a plane crash earlier this month will be laid to rest today.

east chapel hill high school. the 17-year-old is one of two people who were killed after a plane went down in wyoming. families are grieving after a bus carrying a group of new york city students crash in honduras killing three people on board. the students were on a volunteer mission organized by the group global brigades. two were killed, 14 others injured. high praise for a robinson county high school children, his actions saved a school bus of kids last month. cory lewis leapt into action when a car slammed into a out cold. the student hit the brakes moments before the bus went into a ditch. attorneys for a north carolina lawyer who defends the wrongly accused just wrapped up closing arguments in the case christine muma is director of the north carolina center on actual innocence, accused of violating the rules of

wednesday she testified before the north carolina state bar. about a year ago she helped free joseph sledge, who served 40 years from prison for a double murder he didn't commit. she's accused of taking a water bottle from the home of a family member of another subject in the case and tested it for dna without getting consent. >> the district attorney stressed the importance of finding the true perpetrator. >> if she's not allowed to continue her work the world is going to be a worse place. >> in terms of punishment she could be disbarred. attorneys who said say what she did was in fact reasonable. a convict accused of orchestrating a kidnapping plot from behind bars wants charges against him dropped. kevin melton is one of self people charged in the 20* 14 kidnapping of frank jansen, later rescued by the fbi in atlanta. his daughter, an assistant wake county da previously prosecuted melton. prosecutors claim he directed it from prison using a smuggled

wednesday a judge denied his request to have the charges dropped. isis is claiming responsibility for this morning's deadly attack in jakarta, indonesia. terrorists set off bombs around a shopping mall killing two civilians. five extremists were also killed in the attack. italian police made an arrest in the weekend murder of an american woman. ashley olsen found strangled in saturday. the 35-year-old was an artist who moved to the country two years ago. authorities haven't released the suspect's identity but say he's an immigrant from senegal. if you're visiting fort bragg's base any time soon double check your id especially if it's from out of state. fort bragg is no longer accepting some forms of id from

they are because they not currently complying with federal standards. brunswick county woman who won millions in the lottery heads to court next month. marie holmes was served a criminal summons yesterday, accused of making threatening and harassing phone calls earlier this month. she won a $188 million jackpot nearly a year ago. so far she spent millions bailing out her boyfriend on various drug charges, according to the summons she threatened to inflict bodily harm on another woman. at least three people scored a winning powerball ticket, worth millions after last night's record jackpot. at least $2 million -- 2 $2 million ticket were sold here in north carolina.

investigators say gang conflicts in chicago are heavily driven by on-line activity. that is why the department has a special unit designated to monitoring the social media accounts of gang members. >> it's been this way the last two years, of taunting and challenging other gangs and it's the modern way of gang graffiti. >> in just the first two weeks of 2016, 127 people have been shot in chicago alone, 21 have died. police say most of the shootings are gang related. meanwhile, in indiana, police can't stop talking about an odd turn of events during an armed robbery. miffed a man walked into his convenience store to rob him at gunpoint. the clerk scolded him, jabbed his finger at the guy and went down for six minutes before he finally gives up and just leaves. police say they've never seen anything like this. >> the subject complies and

ok, see, i put the gun out. give me some money now. >> i guess when you're fed up you're just fed up. police say the clerk is lucky he didn't get shot but the clerk says he was not trying to be a hero, he was just mad. movie shot in the triangle will premiere tonight in durham. the producers behind "union bound" will hold a red carpet event at 6:30 tonight. the civil war drama was filmed at a plantation in durham. union bound will be released nationwide on february 12th. sad news from hollywood today. british actor alan rickman passed away. the 69-year-old was a shakespearean-trained actor known best for his roles as the villain in "diehard" and the professor in the harry potter movies. rickman's family says he died after a battle with cancer. four days after the golden globes the nominations for the academy waryth have been announced.

all good? sounds easy but -- looks like we could see rain or snow this weekend. fortunately nothing like what is happening out west though. >> that's right. heavy snow in california's sierra mountains is causing all sorts of problems for travelers this week. the snow has been piling up over the past self weeks and stranding motorists who are now having to scramble to find snow chains. this especially tough for truck drivers trying to reach the destinations on a deadline. staying on the topic of crazy weather this month. we do now have a hurricane -- yes, a hurricane in january. this is the first hurricane to form in the atlantic in january since 1938. winds now at about 85 miles per hour with gusts up to 105 miles per hour. so certainly a storm there that we'll watch but again no threat

bringing you closer to home, live picture outside from our wncn tower cam, currently 48 degrees, blue skies as we look towards downtown. a lot of us able to see the warmer temperatures this afternoon because of all that sunshine. more of you now in the 50s. south hill now joining the 50s club. clinton as well. 54 already in pinehurst. 48 durham and 48 in siler city and mid-40s in sanford this morning. as we head towards lunchtime i think we'll stay in the upper 40s, then climb into the mid- 50s this this afternoon. warmer than yesterday, about 13 degrees warmer than yesterday. we're back to near 50, mainly clear skies as we head towards 6:00 p.m. this evening. here's the setup for today. high pressure still controlling our weather, off the coast of country. that is going to drift to sea the weekend. we'll be watching this cold front and then there's another area of low pressure that will be developing tomorrow across the gulf states, that is going

this is round one of rain that will be here tomorrow afternoon. then this cold front comes in to play as we head into the upcoming weekend. so not a lot changes today with all the sunshine. so i'm going to pick the future forecast up at 5:00 p.m. clear skies for the drive home. a few clouds overnight tonight and you'll notice those as you wake up total morning. by noon tomorrow we'll be pretty cloudy, i think most of us are still dry at lunchtime and then the afternoon starts to see heavier downpours move through. know now your drive home tomorrow could be a sloppy one because i'm expecting heavy rain moving across the area at that point in time. so for today, no rain, just sunshine, 55, a really nice end to the workweek -- or nice day fors, tomorrow, the end to the workweek. 58 fayetteville. then tonight we drop into the mid-30s with a few more clouds, it's not going to be as cold and then for our friday, high of 50 with rain moving in. i think most of that rain moves out of here first thing on saturday.

of course we have a big game going down in charlotte on sunday, here we'll be 46. mostly cloudy, isolated shower early if you're tailgating in the morning in charlotte you could see a few flurries mixed in as well. then we're dry as we head into early next week. temperatures dropping, 38 for a high monday. and tuesday. by next wednesday, could be a few more showers back in the area. everyone watching that forecast for sunday. >> that's going to be interesting. >> friday night a little messy on the way home. >> rain.
