attention given to kevin powell in his court appearance was different from the attention he received on the basketball court. back in the 2008, 2009 season, he was a big star at 71st high school in fayetteville where he was named the mid-south eastern conference player of the year. today in court, a judge said if he were to make bond, his freedom will be restricted. >> you will have a curfew. you have to be in by 7:00 p.m. in the house and you could not leave again until 7:00 a.m. and you will be subject to electronic monitoring, an ankle monitor. >> reporter: police say powell walked into his father's spa and shot her. >> this defies logic. it defies explanation. a son shooting his mother, i don't even -- i can't understand that. >> reporter: to try to find out more about him, we went to the place where the warrants say he

nobody answered the door when we were there. although his mother was rushed to cape fear medical, she was transferred to unc in chapel hill. she is now in stable condition. reporting live, steve sbraccia, wncn news now. in a fayetteville courtroom, two people charged with starving a dog to death and leaving another for dead. they are each charged with felony cruelty to animals. animal control tells wncn officers found one dead dog and another in a metal crate with no food or water inside the apartment. they are due back in court next month. in raleigh, a man and woman are in jail after police say they found a meth lab inside a home. prosecutors say they were young children and animals inside the home. they were all in a dangerous situation. wncn's mag knee new land is

>> reporter: you can see a sign on the door saying the home was used as a lab to make drugs. most of them had no idea what was going on until the police showed up. >> i never would have expected this. >> reporter: investigators in haz-mat suites found a meth lab. >> i start hearing, you know, police giving orders to people in the house and basically they had, i don't know, ten police lined up with guns drawn and they all just, they were asking people to come out. >> reporter: police arrested melissa god shall and robert kennedy. both face charges and child abuse and animal cruelty charges because there were kids and dogs in the house. prosecutors say they could have been exposed to dangerous chemicals especially after one batch of meth blew up earlier in the week. >> the two children were in the home, a 2-year-old and a 7-year- old and two dogs were in the

>> reporter: police say the children and their mom were living in a separate part of the house and had no connection to the meth lab, but prosecutors say they could have been put in danger. >> they found 26 to 27 one pot method cooks going at the time when they went in the home. that is 26 to 27 opportunities for something to blow up in that home. >> reporter: in court, kennedy seemed to admit some role mentioning personal consumption and that high tide charges weren't justified. >> this is personal consumption. >> reporter: a lawyer quickly quieted him. police tell us the mom and two kids in the other part of the house were taken to the hospital to be checked out. prosecutors said in court that one of the children did have some respiratory issues. as for the dogs, they were decontaminated and handed over to animal control. maggie newland, wncn news now. family and friends are

old firefighter killed on his way to a call. 24-year-old joshua woods died after overcorrecting,ing off the road and hitting a tree. the funeral is tomorrow at 1:00 at the first missionary baptist church. this marks the 25th anniversary of the start of the persian gulf war. today 17 north carolinians were honored that lost their lives during the war. 24 years ago the kuwaiti government gifted $100,000 for a memorial. until now, north carolina hadn't done anything with the money. governor mccrory announced the money will go to the state's history museum for a traveling exhibit to honor the soldiers of the war. >> i'm proud that the new department of veterans affairs made it a priority so there is no delay in honoring our veterans and fallen servicemen and women. >> it will be expected --

end of the summer. the governor honored dr. martin luther king junior, honoring the economic contributions african americans have made to north carolina's economy and way of life. dozens gathered in hillsborough to honor the legacy of dr. king. rosetta austin mohr gave the keynote address followed by a q and a on the impact of slavery on african americans in orange county. >> i believe he is still the key to us progressing. i believe that his -- he had the right formula, nonviolent protests but protests must. >> dr. king would have turned 87 today. walmart announcing the closing of hundreds of stores today. still ahead, which ones are closing in our area and why nearby businesses are worried. >> and as we take a look outside today, we had clouds and boy that rain came.

cam. we know the names of two million dollar powerball winners in raleigh. a group of six coworkers for a pharmaceutical company in mooresville will split the prize. they have been playing as a group for four years and pool the money when the jackpot tops 100 million. the ticket was purchased on fayetteville road. a $2 million ticket at a food mart express in spring lake is still unclaimed. this morning on "the today show," john and lisa robinson from munn ford, tennessee, announced they hold one of the three winning $1.5 billion powerball tickets. >> she said check the numbers. i said, okay. i looked at them and i said, yeah, they look like they are the numbers. so, i checked them four times and i said, well, i believe it

morning and they say there is a winner in munford. >> lisa works at a dermatologist office. she called her supervisor before going on the air to say she would not be in. she asked them to tune in to "the today show." she has no plans to quit, though. walmart is closing 269 stores, more than half of them in the u.s. including this walmart express in 4 oaks in johnson county. 16 of the stores closing in north carolina are walmart expresses. one super center is closing on mlk parkway in durham. mario boone explains it's not just the workers at that store that expect to feel an impact. >> it's shocking. >> reporter: shocking to hear multibillion dollar walmart will shut down 17 stores in north carolina including this super center on mlk parkway in southwest durham. the last day is january 28th.

it's convenient to our home. >> reporter: between dodging raindrops and making a quick grocery run, pats see could not believe this particular walmart and such -- in such a booming area is closing. >> that's what is surprising. it's growing. >> new development is sprouting up in front of the soon to be shuddered store not to mention several areas. over there is the walmart. about three-foot ball fields away. on this side is the empty storefront where one man planned to open a business until i told him the walmart is closing down. >> i will most likely not open. >> reporter: that's because he is concerned there won't be enough customers left when walmart leaves. >> i'm afraid that some of the traffic will be lost. >> reporter: walmart issued a statement saying that the decision to close stores is difficult. the company said affected workers have the option to transfer to other stores. some will get 60 days pay,

>> i wish that it would stay. >> reporter: in southwest durham, mario boone, wncn. we are following breaking news in durham where a man was shot and killed after neighbors heard a dozen gunshots. it happened after 3:30 this afternoon on north miami boulevard. wncn's michael highland joins us from the scene with more. michael? >> reporter: sean, police had the street blocked for 2 1/2 hours. the shooting happened at this home behind me near the intersection of fisk street. when police got here, they found a man in his 20s shot. they tried to do cpr on the way to the hospital but the young man died on the way there. police have not released the man's name or potential suspects. they are unsure what lead up to the shoot out. neighbors were surprised to see this happen in the middle of the afternoon.

boulevard up to the intersection with juniper street. it's unclear how much longer they will be out here. this is durham's third homicide already this month. there is a fourth spokespersons death under investigation. in all of last year, 42 homicides in durham. michael highland, wncn news now. garner police are celebrating the new station by unveiling a restored mural. it was vandalized in october when a person spray painted kill a cop, save a child on it. the lengthy mural features a police car, a north carolina flag and pictures of garner officers with children. the artist called the defacing of the mural hurtful but vowed to redo it. >> it's not just an accomplishment for me but the town because the town was the one that rallied around this mural that said we want this mural, we will pay for the fixing of the mural and the town, the people are the reason

>> garner police will hold a community open house from 11:00 to 2:00 and include building tours, canine team demonstrations and other activities. thanks to the incredible generosity of folks in our area, a dozen families can call themselves homeowners. habitat wake volunteers in partnership with nc state are building walls they will bring to plots in raleigh. it's north latest build a block project. i spoke to habitat for human might any ceo jonathan wreckford who is here to celebrate the largest collaboration. the previous record unc where students helped build ten homes in our area. >> i got to give nc state full credit. they will build 11 houses in one year. that is a great competition. we have the campus chapter partnering with the university partnering with wake habitat. >> construction starts in

we will dry out as we mentioned earlier in the newscast. you see here it will be likely when you head out this evening for rain but midnight turning it off. maybe a little bit in virginia but that's it. dry overnight, down to about 40 for a low. 42 at 6:00 a.m. then skies will become partly sunny and we will get up to the mid-50s. a high of 56 degrees. tomorrow is dry. what about sunday? you might have heard rumors or things. here is what will happen sunday, before 4:00 a.m. and noon there could be precipitation. offshore low pressure system which i will show you in a moment. upper level system across the state. when the atmosphere gets cold it will try to squeeze out any moisture and any moisture aloft could be in the form of snowflakes. i want you to know now if you wake up on sunday and you look out between 4:00 and noon and you see a snowflake, told you so. but i want to tell you surface temperatures above 32, little or no impact.

i am more concerned about monday. you got to head back to work or school and the high will be 36. a frozen start at 8:00 a.m. the chill will make it feel like the 20s all day. 35 and sunny and cold at 5:00. then as we head to tuesday, just as cold in the afternoon. but the coldest morning, 19 tuesday morning then we kind of moderate through the 40s. maybe a brief rain or snow shower, flurry or something. that is so far off. i put it up there because i thought it would balance the map a little bit. as we take a look at the 3- degree guarantee, yesterday's forecast 52. today we did get up to 51. 100 more dollars making it 200 to the duke home care and hospice association. >> a drier weekend. today we had a few showers. >> i just emphasize sunday morning. i doubt we will see any precipitation but there could be a flake. >> you need to prepare, go to the grocery store. >> that's what i was trying to get you not to do. save the milk for me.
