good morning. thank you for watching wncn today. so glad that you're with us. i'm mike gonzalez. stefan chase has the morning off. let's check in with kristin ketchell. we had some frost on the windshield this morning. you may want to leave yourself an extra minute or two and we're dry so the messy weather that we had yesterday morning, the rain and snow, it was pretty, and it did not cause too much issues. but it is out of here. we're not seeing anything in the way of wet weather and wintry precipitation. it is 30 degrees in raleigh and 29 in fayetteville. and we'll see the coldest air of the season being pushed into the area today and tomorrow. highs not getting out of the 30s overnight lows dip into a

forecast looking good with the temperatures in the 20s and 30s. expect only a high temperature of 35 degrees. sunny and breezy today but colder tomorrow. and the forecast is coming up. and let's get a check on your morning dry. we have a nice looking condition here at south sanders street. and the traffic is moving smoothly. light traffic volumes on the roads this morning that is thanks to mlk day. so a good news for the roads. we have one incident to tell you about downtown at brown street. there's an accident at martin luther king, jr. boulevard and u.s. 64 and knightdale, westbound between i540 and smithfield, we have a ladder. and they are cleaning that up. breaking now out of ohio this morning. danville police officer was shot and killed overnight and

thomas catrel was shot around midnight and the suspect drove off in the officer's car. and they are veg what led up to the shooting. -- they are investigating what led up to that shooting. the highway patrol is trying to track down the driver that hit three teenagers and kept going. two of them passed away and another in critical condition at this hour. and justin quesinberry joins us live in the newsroom with what we just learned. >> reporter: the troopers said that the driver was in a white truck when the teens were hit in harnett county late saturday night. jessica took this photo with her 13-year-old sister, jennifer schark, not long before going to a store with friends saturday night. it was one of the last photos they ever took together. >> we were going to the kangaroo for candy and the truck ran down three of my friends and kept going and never stopped, just stomped on

>> reporter: jennifer and a 16- year-old, kyle straight were killed. a family friend tells us that kyle's mother had a heart attack on saturday and in the hospital when she learned of his death. >> it is a shame their family is having to go through this and the other families that lost their daughter is having to go through this. they were just babies. >> reporter: 14-year-old steven daniels was injured and it left families mourning and a message for the driver. >> turn yourself in because it will be worse in the end. there are a lot of people upset. >> anyone with information is asked to call the highway patrol. wake county fire crews responded to a house fire sunday night in garner. no word what caused the fire or if anyone was injured in the fire. four people are he can helped by the red cross after a house was damaged yesterday

the one story home on parkland drive was heavily damaged and luckily no injuries reported. and officials tell us that the fire was started by an overloaded electrical circuit. the search continues for 12 missing marines whose helicopters collided off the coast of hawaii. the coast guard remains optimistic stressing it is still a research and rescue mission. and high surf warning has expired and the coast guard said they have no intention ever sudden pending search and if they do they'll notify the families from advance. malitias have kid napped three americans in baghdad. baghdad. they are working with the local official toes to find the americans. they were on the way to baghdad were taken. we'll keep you update. five americans are now free released from prison in iran. three of them flew to switzerland and then on to germany yesterday. the five including a reporter,

and i have three card orders. >> that was operator francis franswa. she was on the call placing a lunch order for herself and other coworkers in fort lauderdale. people were calling the 911 center line after a man is a seizure. and the serve investigation said that the woman ignored audioi believe tones and visuals during the call that lasts about eight minutes. she was officially given a letter of reprimand. next month chipotle is closing all of its restaurants for several hours to talk food safety. they'll have a national team meeting. and the restaurant chain will discuss food safety changes that will be implemented in light of e. coli and salmonella crowd greats. sales have plummeted for chipotle and stock has dropped 30% in december.

i'll let you know how welcome back. searchchand rescue crews continue the efforts to find 12 u.s. marines that are missing after two helicopters crashed off the coast of hawaii. the coast guard does not plan to call off or suspend the search anytime soon.

kick off formal negotiations of a joint venture. the nfl approved a move of the rams to la and a move to allow the chargers to join them at that stadium. there will be a martin luther king, jr. laying ceremony in washington d.c. and attorney general lynch will host a martin luther king, jr. breakfast. and happening right now the search is on in utah for a woman connectedded to a shooting that killed a police officer -- connected to a shooting that killed a police hospital. they responded to a crash and that he approached the man and woman walking away from the scene, the man turned around shot and killed officer barn next. and minutes later the men got into a fight with other police officers and he died in the shootout and officer rich ritchie was hit three times but he is expected to survive. and the police in upstate new york are trying to figure out how three people died in a

and they found two men and one woman dead inside the home. two of the victims were student athletes at the school. and the police said that no firearm was used but a knife was recovered at the scene. and the police are not ruleing this a double murder-suicide or saying which of the deceased could be the suspect. two people are dead after tornadoes touched down in florida on the west coast there in sarasota and manatee counties. manatee county residents had 18 minutes warning before the ef-2 tornado tore across 7 miles at 7:00 yesterday morning. >> i saw their son coming done the driveway. he was covered in blood. and i let down my window all he kept saying was i can't find my dad. sew jumped on the back of the truck and we had the flashlights and headlights and we pull up here. >> and the two people that died are from the same family. four kids and one adult ashurt in that family.

be to plame for a deadly crash in southwest michigan. 44 vehicles were involved. and another 12 vehicle pileup happened around the same time that involved six semi trucks. it is a frosty start to the week. in indianapolis, a windchill of 30 degrees below zero. and grate bear ski resorted south dakota had to shut down because the temperatures dipped as low as negative 20. carolina panthers pounded the seahawks in the first half of the nfc contest, bolding to a 31-0 halftime lead. and the second half was not as fruitful for the cats, it was enough to help carolina move one step closer to super bowl 50.

game and it kicks off at 6:40. that should be and exciting game. we need cam's hat with at fuzzy thing on top. we're off to a cold start. >> yes. we had to scrape the frost off the windshield this morning. but it looks gorgeous from the tower camera this is a live look. the skies are getting a little brighter at sunrise that is about 7:24 this morning. the skies are clear. and that is a big change from yesterday. 30 degrees in raleigh, durham and littleton right now. and 29 in fayetteville, and 28 in goldsboro. and we may drop a few more degrees in the next couple hours before the temperatures warm up into the mid-30s this afternoon. and a lot of sunshine in the forecast today. so there's some good news and it looks gorgeous. but the temperatures are not going to get out of the 30s.

we had a cold front move through yesterday and that is ushering in the coldest air of the season that we've experienced so far today and tomorrow. and the high temperatures will not get out of the 30s. and the overnight lows in the teens. and this will keep us sunny tuesday and wednesday and thursday is moderates. so the highs jump back into the 40s on wednesday and thursday. but it is still unseasonably cool for this time of year. and the next system will move through on friday. and depending on what the precipitation starts, we may have snowflakes at the beginning of the precipitation and at the end too. so we'll keep you updated on that as we inch our closer to friday. and the forecast today, 35 degrees in raleigh, 34 in durham and 39 in fayetteville and sunny skies and it is looking nice outside today. but the cold temperatures and very cold tonight and we could say frigid.

sid san diego tomorrow morning and calm winds but a cold night. so the temperatures tomorrow morning at the bus stop, really chilly for the kids. you'll need the heavy jackets and hats and gloves. tomorrow afternoon, after the start into the teens, we're only warming up to near freezing, 32 but we have the sunshine. and then down to 18 degrees and up to 42 on wednesday afternoon with just a few high, then clouds and more clouds rolling in on thursday and a little warmer on thursday with a high of 47. next chance for rain holds off till friday again depending on what time precipitation starts. and we may have a few wet snowflakes mixing in on friday and then saturday morning as the precipitation wraps up. but the weekend looking mostly dry. 42 saturday and 47 on sunday.

we're getting slammed by cold temperatures. >> the coldest air that we've experienced all season. and then we flipped the switch in february. so it was only a matter of time. a little reality check for us here. and it is winter and definitely going to be feeling like it today and tomorrow, specially 35 degrees the high temperature today and we're down to 16 degrees tonight and some spots tomorrow morning, we'll wake up with the temperatures feeling like they are in the single digits. so some single digits witches tomorrow morning and up to freezing tomorrow afternoon and 32. and we're dunn to the teens again -- down to the teens against wednesday morning and we warm up into the 40s and that will feel a lot warmer and that is below afternoon for this time of year. and the next chance of rain holding off till friday and we'll have a few snowflakes mixing in. and the morning drive, we're seeing some traffic volumes increasing. but because of the holiday and not too much issues on the roads, good news. but be safe out there.
